Mitch Daniels to Indiana’s fleebagger Democrats: Come home, chumps

posted at 6:24 pm on February 24, 2011 by Allahpundit

A belated attempt to undo the damage from what he said on Tuesday about the right-to-work bill proposed by Indiana Republicans. If you missed last night’s Quotes of the Day — including/especially this incisive defense of Daniels by Avik Roy — read them now for necessary context. Daniels has no love for unions: As noted even in my Tuesday post, he acted on his first day as governor to strip state workers of their collective bargaining privileges and he’s fully behind Scott Walker in Wisconsin, as he’s eager to remind Cavuto here. The reason he thought pushing the right-to-work bill now was a bad idea in Indiana was because he knew the fleebaggers would flee, destroying the quorum and jeopardizing not only the labor bill but the GOP’s entire agenda, including education reform. And … that’s exactly what’s happened. The right-to-work bill has been withdrawn by Republicans yet Democrats remain holed up in Illinois doing what they do best, i.e. wasting taxpayer money.

So there’s his defense, although between the social issues “truce,” his ruminations about a VAT paired with income tax cuts, and now this, he’s probably already lost many grassroots righties irretrievably. Exit question: Does his vigorous damage control over the past few days signal that he’s running for president after all? He’s got the Chris Christie “fiscal con RINO” seal of approval if he does!

So they did what the Democrats wanted and they still stayed away? Eff ‘em, then.

Re-introduce it, buck up and take it to the bastards. Then he might get some of his support back.

If he can’t fight the dirty dems of Indiana on the taxpayers’ behalf, he sure as hell can’t fight the dirty dems of DC on our behalf. Sorry, Mitch. We need someone who understands the level of depravity and corruption in the modern democrat party and is committed to putting a stop to it. You aren’t that fella. You’re too skeered of ‘em. Boo! See? You flinched a little.

Maybe he should call a truce on being a squishy moderate.

It doesn’t really matter, anyway. He’s just too short.

SlaveDog on February 24, 2011 at 6:38 PM

He makes a fair point.

It’s the Dems who are being ridiculous here.

MayBee on February 24, 2011 at 6:39 PM

Roy’s article is a must-read for the Daniels-deranged.

So there’s his defense, although between the social issues “truce,” his ruminations about a VAT paired with income tax cuts, and now this, he’s probably already lost many grassroots righties irretrievably.

Jeebus, too much emphasis is being put on this. Even Allah is hinting that Daniels somehow pushed for VAT, as he only toyed with the IDEA of it (wrongly, but no one is perfect)…and there’s too varied a definition of “truce” here regarding social issues. Heck, many commenters here, who don’t care for Mitch, have constantly stated how social issues like gay marriage be put aside to tackle the economy.

JetBoy on February 24, 2011 at 6:40 PM

Is Mitt Daniels flip-flopping again?

steebo77 on February 24, 2011 at 6:40 PM

The fact that he did strip unions of collective bargaining rights on his very first day in office does provide a decent defense of his position.

However.

This foot-in-mouth business has got to stop. It makes those of us who do admire his record wary of him pandering to a mythical “center” that is actually far to the left of what most Americans want or need.

He gets back a little of the credibility he lost here, but not all of it. He’ll have to really go after the left, instead of trying to appease it further, if he wants my vote.

Caiwyn on February 24, 2011 at 6:40 PM

Yeah, so Mitch what are you going to do when they don’t come back?

You gave them an inch, and they’re going to take a mile of your agenda.

Way to enable them, dumbass.

KingGold on February 24, 2011 at 6:41 PM

So he caved in on the right to work so that he could ge teducation reform and he’s getting neither. In other words, he thoughts timidity would help and he failed in the calculation. In other words, he didn’t want the DNC/MSM do to him what they did to Scott Walker all to preserve his moderate credentials going. A coward, not a leader.

Knucklehead on February 24, 2011 at 6:43 PM

This is one weak ass mofo!

Let’s get this straight right now though. He’s been conspiring to defeat this Right2Work law for some time. This was just as good of an excuse as any to kill it.

He praised the democrats the other day, and said leaving the state was an “effective” strategy.

After he got his butt kicked, he came back and tried to weasel out of it.

It’s bad enough to say something stupid, but it’s worse to buckle under pressure. He should have owned it. It’s what he really meant.

There is nothing right about this guy.

He’s the only human being on earth that makes Mitt Romney look competent.

Daniels is done. His career has reached it’s peak.

gary4205 on February 24, 2011 at 6:44 PM

He may have been right about trying to save the rest of his agenda, but he sure read the winds wrong, on both sides of the aisle. Way to rip one right out the Chamberlain playbook, Mitch.

Mitch “tiny ba**s” Daniels is not a fiscal conservative. Anyone who proposes a high earner income tax is a de facto Democrat. Also, it’s pathetic he slimes back on what he said two days ago but the truce on social issues keeps on, which makes sense since he’s a social liberal who appointed a liberal state Supreme Court justice.

Daniels is being tested….From the Campaign Spot on NRO

This is a very strong statement…said on NPR….

But even its most passionate advocates over the decades — Franklin Delano Roosevelt being a great example — said it really had no place in the public sector. We’ve evolved to a situation where the privileged, the elite in American society, really, are government unions, which no longer represent people who are paid less than the public that they serve but are paid much more and with much richer benefits and perfect job security in many cases. So, I think, bringing some balance back to that is necessary if states like Wisconsin and our nation, for that matter, are going to, you know, regain our balance and not kill the American dream for everybody else.

http://www.nationalreview.com/campaign-spot/260537/mitch-daniels-monday-elite-american-society-really-are-government-unions

We need to understand that this statement would have been political suicide 4 years or 6 years ago. In WI according to that one poll, 50 percent think that Walker’s bill is GOOD….this is WI, home of Feingold and Kohl.

Part of the UW thing is Leftists head exploding…their cherished iconography, their most beautiful dreams are going up in smoke.

You could have a VAT tax OR a flat tax, but BOTH? Really? REALLY?

They can be paired…

Exit question: Does his vigorous damage control over the past few days signal that he’s running for president after all? He’s got the Chris Christie “fiscal con RINO” seal of approval if he does!

Not a chance. Mitch would have a better chance getting a dirty sanchez from our resident hat-eater than becoming president.
