Breaking: Gaddafi flees Tripoli? Update: Two military pilots land in Malta for asylum
posted at 12:50 pm on February 21, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
We’ve been hearing rumors of this since last night, but nothing substantive has been reported on Moammar Gaddafi’s whereabouts. His son Saif al-Islam Gaddafi appeared on national television yesterday insisting that his father was fighting with the army and would not retreat until the “last bullet,” but the British Foreign Secretary says diplomatic sources suggest that the Libyan dictator may be looking for that bullet a long way from home:
British Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Monday he had seen some information to suggest Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi had fled the country and was on his way toVenezuela. …
Diplomats said Hague was not referring to rumors circulating in the media about Gaddafi’s whereabouts, but to separate sources for the information.
The destination makes some sense. Both countries belong to OPEC, for instance, but the relationship between Gaddafi and Hugo Chavez is closer than that. In September 2009, the AP reported that the two leaders had agreed to strengthen diplomatic ties to fight “imperialism” of the wealthy nations:
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi signed a declaration Monday night decrying what they call attempts by powerful Western countries to equate struggles against colonialism with terrorism.
In the declaration, Venezuela and Libya “reject intentions to link the legitimate struggle of the people for liberty and self-determination” with terrorism, but also adds that they “reiterate the importance of countering terrorism in all its forms.”
Neither of the two leaders commented publicly on the document. It does not specifically name any Western country, but Gadhafi mentioned both the United States and Britain during a speech after the signing.
The New York Times reports that Gaddafi’s forces have lost control of most of the capital now, and are on the retreat:
The 40-year-rule of the Libyan strongman Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi appeared to teeter Monday as his security forces retreated to a few buildings in the Libyan capital of Tripoli, fires burned unchecked and senior government officials and diplomats announced defections. The country’s second-largest city remained under the control of rebels.
Security forces loyal to Mr. Qaddafi defended a handful of strategic locations, including the state television headquarters and the presidential palace, witnesses reported from Tripoli. Fires from the previous night’s rioting burned at many intersections, most stores were shuttered, and long lines were forming for a chance to buy bread or gas.
In a sign of growing cracks within the government, several senior officials — including the justice minister and members of the Libyan mission to the United Nations — announced their resignations. And protesters in Benghazi, the second-largest city where the revolt began and more than 200 were killed, issued a list of demands calling for a secular interim government led by the army in cooperation with a council of Libyan tribes.
Venezuela denies that Gaddafi is coming their way:
A senior source in the Venezuelan government denied on Monday reports that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was traveling to the South American oil-producing nation led by his ally President Hugo Chavez.
The Caracas government “denies such information,” the source told Reuters.
We’ll soon see. If Gaddafi was looking for a way out of Libya, he would have few options in the region. With popular revolts flaring up in most of the Muslim nations of north Africa and southwest Asia, he’d need to find somewhere far away for a safe haven, and Venezuela would perhaps be the only country where Gaddafi would feel safe. And if he’s not outbound from Libya, then why hasn’t Gaddafi made his presence known on Libyan state television, leaving the impression of a power vacuum at the top at the worst possible time?
Update: The Daily Mail says Gaddafi has fled Tripoli, and his forces have lost the state television building, but he may be preparing a last stand at Sebha:
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is believed to have fled the capital Tripoli after anti-government demonstrators breached the state television building and set government property alight.
Protesters appear to have gained a foothold in Tripoli as banks and government buildings were looted while demonstrators have claimed they have taken control of the second city Benghazi. …
A source at Tripolis Mitiga Airport said he saw three planes leaving early this morning.
Gaddafi was on one, said the source. The planes were heading down south – to Sebha.
The claim was supported by at least two pro-democracy campaigners who said they had also seen the aircraft leaving.
If Gaddafi has lost Benghazi and fled Tripoli, then there isn’t much ground left for a last stand.
Update II: Has the Libyan air force begun to panic?:
Two Libyan air force jets landed in Malta on Monday and their pilots asked for political asylum amid a bloody crackdown on anti-government protesters in Libya, a military source said. …
The source, who insisted he not be identified further, said the jet pilots — both Libyan air force colonels — had communicated from the air that they wanted political asylum. They had left from a base near Tripoli and had flown low over Libyan airspace to avoid detection, the source said.

Deaths in Morrocco
Taieb Cherkaoui told reporters Monday that officials recovered the burned bodies from a bank branch in the northern city of Al Hoceima following Sunday’s violence there. He said that authorities believe rioters set the bank ablaze.
The interior minister said at least 128 people – mostly security force members – were injured during protests in several towns across Morocco. He said about 37,000 Moroccans were involved in the demonstrations, and authorities arrested 120 people for vandalism and “troublemaking” during the unrest.

Thanks for the links guys… I live in Los Angeles and so I can tell you that when a country or city gets an unsustainable amount of uneducated unproductive immigrants fleeing their own countries for what ever reason everyone gets brought down in the country immigrated to. There are parts of Los Angeles that look worse thatn Tijuana, people in neighborhods that used to be middle class and relatively safe see their property values crash as homes get tuned into multi dwelling rentals. The crime goes up, etc…It becomes a real mess. You do not want to live in a city where straying into these areas could get you killed because the “utopia” the immigrants thought they were fleeing too is sometimes worse for them than they ever imagined. They don’t speak the language, they don’t have skills, they have prmitive customs that go against the laws of the host country, they expect the citizens of their refuge to support them. This was happening up to five years ago but now the citizens of their refuge are going broke and getting pretty angy themselves. I see a lot of strife in the world’s future.

Revolt in Libya
West Warns Gadhafi Against Escalation of Violence
It started in the northeast. But days after demonstrators began taking to the streets in Benghazi last Wednesday, the Libyan capital of Tripoli has now also become a focal point of efforts to topple Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi. Eyewitnesses on Sunday night and Monday have reported what appear to be the greatest challenge yet to Gadhafi’s leadership.
‘Out of Order’
“This is totally out of order,” said German European Affairs Minister Werner Hoyer, according to the German press agency DPA. “The European Union must not let allow itself to be blackmailed.”
EU states on the Mediterranean seemed particularly concerned on Monday. Tonio Borg, the foreign minister of Malta, said he was worried about the “implications the instability (in North Africa) could have on migratory flows, and ultimately not only in Malta and Italy, but all over Europe,” the BBC reported.
After recent unrest, the number of migrants from Tunisia to Lampedusa, an Italian island in the Mediterranean island located between Tunisia and Sicily, increased dramatically. In its efforts to battle illegal immigration from North Africa, the EU said last year that it would support Libya in efforts to stem the flow of migrants to the tune of €50 million in support paid out over several years.
EU Firms Evacuate Employees
With violence continuing to spiral out of control, a number of European firms said they had either already begun evacuating workers or are planning to do so.

I had a marvelous childhood growing up in Tripoli in the 50′s. I thought all American kids lived in the North Africa desert and hung around with Foreign Legionnaires!!
I personally mourn for the people of Libya and the family friends I grew up with.
In those days there were large populations of Italians, Jews, and Germans in Libya. Most of the Germans had been in the “Afrika Korps” and had been prisoners of war. After the war they remained in Libya and settled down with Libyan wives.
The culture was westernized and western wear among women was everywhere. I suspect that is no longer they case as Libya became more Islamic.
I suppose all the people I knew in Libya as a kid, Selma, “Captain” Mohammed, “Private” Mohammed (police officer cousins), Fatima, and “cat lady’ are probably dead, especially “Captain” Mohammed, he was a mid level police officer in 1958 and I suspect he didn’t survive the bloody transition to power by Gaddafi, maybe his lower ranking cousin “Private” Mohammed did. Mom swore he looked like Cesar Romero.
It was a magic place to grown up in and exciting to a book worm kid who loved reading about desert adventures, plus, I was convinced that Tarzan’s jungle was only a few miles that way.
I played in the Roman ruins of Sabratha and Leptis Magna
We frequently took trips across the Libyan desert, taking small roads while avoid the posted mine fields that still existed in the mid-50s. On one of those trips we met Mohammed, a troglodyte in the west Sahara. My family and his became very close quite by accident. One day my father gave him a ride to his “home” and he insisted on giving us tea. We went to a large hole in the ground with a side tunnel leading to the bottom and then saw individual caves dug off from the bottom of the hole.
All the caves I remembered were whitewashed and Mohammed’s cave was decorated with an empty red box of “Tide” detergent.
On a second visit my mother brought a bigger, full box of “Tide” and it replaced the smaller box on subsequent visits.
When Mohammed came to harvest olives in Tripoli he just assumed we were his host and he’d sleep on the floor of our apartment for the week or so required for the harvest.
Our maid swore he was going to cut our throats as we slept and at night you could hear her moving furniture in her room to block the door.
I’d always wanted to take my wife to Libya for a visit and I’d hoped that eventually there would be a peaceful transition to a government more amenable to the U.S. and I could get tourist visas. Alas, that now seems to be a forlorn hope.
It was a wonderful country and I’m sadden by recent events.

Recall that climactic scene from “LOTR: Return of the King” when Sauron’s Ring melts in the crack of Mount Doom; the Dark Tower crashes; and Mordor itself swallows up the enemies of Middle Earth?
That’s what we’re witnessing in the Middle East today as Islamo-autocratic power melts in the fires of Iraqi democratization. Saruman Soros can only watch now in slow motion as Bush and Cheney are born triumpantly on eagles’ wings into history… The End
It’s astonishing to find history vindicating the Bush doctrine– even as The Obamateur submits to the logic of democratization in Iraq.
So why isn’t billionaire progressive Saruman Soros financing any unhinged Leftist rent-a-mob rallies against Obama’s summary execution of (un-Mirandized!) civilians by Reaper drone airstrikes in Pakistan?
Afterall, Obama’s targeting tactics are clearly more Miranda-despising than Bush’s post-9/11 moistening of KSM, et.al.
Obama’s policy to use Reaper drones to target (un-Mirandized!) civilians has increased markedly without a peep. Get busy, Leftists.
Saruman Soros should burn a Koran every day until Obama either releases his birth certificate or ends his Reaper drone madness.
Rage against the machine, progressives!

Obama is undoubtedly waiting for the EU to call and demand the US save their interests around the world again.
He will say no. And then the world will ignite. Anyone with a stick and a grievance will seek to “free” themselves from whatever authority there is.

Here’s something for those ordering the air strikes to consider:
Bombs don’t care where they go. We’ve seen two Libyan pilots defect already. Who’s to say the next pilot takes off, and instead of dropping bombs on the citizenry, drops those bombs on the office of the guy who ordered him to do it.
Karma’s a BOOOOOOOM!

These same protesters are the ones who attacked Lara Logan screaming Yahood, Yahood (Jew, Jew)?
The same ones who were in Tahrir Square calling for war with Israel.
Tahrir demonstrators say they aim to liberate Jerusalem

Not sure I much care for this sort of victory.

The Bush doctrine was badly flawed in that he assumed that inside every Muslim an American was struggling to get out.
Democracy in a savage culture will simply be a popular form of savagery. Western democracy isn’t coming to the Middle East, but radical Muslim democracy may well be and that is not in our best interest.

I reckon that the Lockerbie terrorist POS Ibin Wearin Aturbin is shaking in his boots, sandals, Tevas, whatever.
Now that the BP Oil Deal between the UK and Libya is so obviously not in the mix any longer, how long will it take the new British PM to send a squad of British SAS down to Camel-Land to “repatriate” that airplane-bombing sonofabitch back to a Scottish gaol?
CatchAll on February 21, 2011 at 11:43 PM
For that matter, how long are we supposed to think the end times are just around the corner, what with “wars and rumors of wars” being constantly (mis)quoted by thickwits with an Armageddon complex?
