Quotes of the day

posted at 10:42 pm on February 16, 2011 by Allahpundit

“With just one impressive speech, Chris Christie put three full days of CPAC speakers to shame.

“That’s the bottom line from a bipartisan panel of experts, who watched the New Jersey governor’s address on Wednesday at the American Enterprise Institute for POLITICO – and drew a sharp contrast between Christie and the cattle call of potential GOP hopefuls at the just-concluded conservative gathering…

“‘He hit precisely the right notes people are looking for,’ Democratic strategist Jamal Simmons said of the Republican, citing the governor’s focus on getting the states and nation’s fiscal house in order…

“‘He looked presidential in the kind of Hollywood sense,’ Simmons said. ‘The Bulworth, straight-talking politician. John Goodman on The West Wing. Republican guy from the heartland. He looked that part but it’s a long way to go from there to the White House.’”

***
“The way to understand Christie, says Ben Dworkin, director of the Institute for New Jersey politics at Rider University, ‘is he has the leadership skills of a powerful prosecutor who happens to be governor. He argues his case in the press, and he stays on the attack constantly.’ As a federal prosecutor in New Jersey, Christie never lost a corruption case, and there were plenty in a state best known for The Sopranos. His favorite phrase: ‘Heads I win, tails you lose.’ Yet he’s declined to join other Republican governors and attorneys general in challenging Obama’s health care reform. He says he doesn’t have the money to fool around with that stuff right now, and if the law is found unconstitutional, New Jersey will benefit without having to kick in legal fees.

“His refusal to join in suggests a degree of pragmatism that is attractive to non-true believers. This is a guy who has focused his message of change, and is clear about what he stands for. This is distinct from Obama’s message of change, which meant different things to different people in 2008 and left almost everybody disappointed…

“Christie’s tough-guy approach is working, making him a national figure after just 13 months in office. ‘He commands the bully pulpit more effectively than any other governor we have seen in modern history,’ says Dworkin, who predicts Christie will deliver the keynote address at the GOP convention in 2012.”

***
DYLAN RATIGAN, HOST: Go ahead, Jonathan. Set all of that aside, just your evaluation of [New Jersey Governor Chris] Christie, period, as a politician and his rhetoric.

JONATHAN CAPEHART, WASHINGTON POST: I think Chris Christie is terrific. Here’s a guy whose tough talk is matched up by tough action. All those things he’s talking about, he talked about at AEI today, those are all things he’s done with the exception of dealing with entitlements and things like that which he doesn’t really have to deal with because he’s a governor. But because he’s a governor in a state with deep financial problems and is forced every day, day in and day out, to make decisions, you know, he’s, he’s making them and he’s not sugar-coating them. He’s not trying to be anybody’s friend. He, you know, President Obama talks about adult conversations. Speaker Boehner talks about adult conversations surrounding the big, tough issues that face the country. Chris Christie is the one who’s actually having the adult conversation and making the tough decisions. And when people get in his face and try to yell back at him, he yells back. He actually yells back, which is why I think is driving his popularity.

That makes him “cozy” with the subversive Islamic elements?

blatantblue on February 17, 2011 at 12:45 AM

No, that’s not it. That was just a red flag everyone paid no attention to.

When Christie was still at the DoJ, he fought the government, when they were trying to deport a Hamas terrorist. This terrorist is still in the US, thanks to Christie.

Christie just appointed the terrorist’s attorney, a Muslim who has defended Gitmo detainees, AND advocated for Sharia Law in the US, to New Jersey’s Superior Court.

Hell, even Obama wouldn’t do something that insane.

Also, NJ’s Homeland Security guy, a Christie man, has ties to Hamas, as well.

The gun grabbin’, private property stealin’, and amnesty lovin’ stuff should be enough to run him out of the party, by the ties to radical Islam border on treason.

Gohawgs on February 17, 2011 at 2:21 AM

here is a special little treat for those with your head up your as* thinking the media will not attack any and all gop candidates

This was posted in a MSM publication

Now in New Jersey, we have a fat, mean, loudmouthed, Republican, bully using public employees, and especially teachers — as ragdoll punching bags, as he gleefully tries to beat public unions to death…

http://www.hawaiireporter.com/the-state-of-the-state-not-so-great

the comment was made by JOHN RADCLIFFE – at the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly, the teachers’ union at the state’s public university. He is the former head of the organization, and now serves as a lobbyist and consultant to Gov. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii.

this will be the meme the dems use against Chrisite if he ever won the nomination. Just like the dems trotted out the advark to defend NPR and play on the emotions of the masses. Chrisite will be made into a sinster mob figure that wants to kill over grandma and the teachers. A bully that will cause ww3 because he will try to bully his way out of problems with China and Russia. etc. Rinse repeat.

And of course the same RINOS that are pushing Chrisite on us now will be the first to duck and cover from the media and insit that Chrisite’s “style” does not speak for them and they just want to be nice and maybe he should “tone it down some”

And the MSM/lefts makes another GOP candidate aan evil republican…and the beat goes on.

the only way to deal with this is to defend the one they are targeting. The way it is now how the RINOS treated Gov Palin why should I even lift a finger to defend Chrisite when these attacks start. Why should I not pile on like the anyone but palin gopers have done?

What comes around goes around and treat others how you wish to be treated and Reagan’s 11th should be taught from childhood in the gop party. Sadly it is not

the worse part of it will be that the meme will be based on a good bit of truth. some of chrisites tactivs can by definition be called bullying. He won’t be able to defend or difuse the meme, Unlike tn\he sstupid meme with Palin can be easly refuted just by her showing up.

Chrisite would have to change his total personia and at the first slip up they will make him look like th egop nominee for the NY gov race,…..

Chris Christie: A Conservative Myth

“* His budget passed only after three conservative Republicans were bullied into voting for it and the savings achieved in the budget were done at the expense of new taxes, new fees, federal Stimulus funds and accounting gimmicks; the 2% property tax cap will actually cause taxes to skyrocket; he has yet to propose the “across the board” tax cuts he promised as a candidate; the budget actually INCREASES state expenditures by 6% and the number of staff in the Governor’s office making $100,000 per year increases by ten;
* His confrontation with the unions is pure Kabuki theater with nothing accomplished but acrimony; he has yet to lay off a single state employee and his proposed 2011 state worker reduction plan is little more than window dressing;
* He has populated his cabinet with notorious liberals while firing the only true conservative – after slandering him;
* He has endorsed notorious RINO candidates in the 2010 mid-term election while avoiding (with one notable exception) contact with conservative candidates;
* He supports a multi-state Cap & Trade scheme known as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and is so committed to Cap & Trade that he used funds raised from RGGI’s carbon auctions to help balance the budget; he has directed that state funds be appropriated to subsidize “green” technology ventures such as off-shore windmills;
* He has refused to join other state attorneys-general in a joint lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Obamacare while accepting federal funds for the implementation of a similar program on a statewide level;
* He is on record saying that he does not believe illegal aliens are here illegally; he has indicated that he supports amnesty for illegals; he generally favors strict gun control and he supports construction of the Ground Zero Mosque even as he condemns those who oppose it.”

Let’s get serious. So far, we’re looking throught the lens of style over substance. The entire lens has been on one argument. One. Very Specific. Confrontation.

I want to see him in the corner, getting hit hard from all angles. From what spring does his spirit draw for which he fights? Can he lead a Nation?

So far, he survived the first round in his first fight, and all the fans think he’s already 1-0. Even if he was 1-0, since when do we send that to a title fight?

Style of substance got The Won in the White House and at least the Gov. Christie’s ideology is correct. I don’t know if it’s enough to make him the Republican nominee but he would make a he!! of Press Secretary.

Cindy Munford on February 17, 2011 at 8:08 AM

Trojan RINO. Sans rhetoric, how many teachers jobs have actually been cut in NJ? Have teachers salaries or pensions been trimmed?

Compare and contrast how the governor of Wisconsin has been treated by unions in his first 100 days.

There is a reason why unions have not disrupted Christie’s speeches. They are fake. Something always smelled funny there.

Angry Dumbo on February 17, 2011 at 8:17 AM

Anyway I am not worried at all. I just try to keep the flow of info as accurate as possible in light of incessant media distortions.

Geochelone on February 17, 2011 at 2:40 AM

He did I did not know that. Good observation.

As far as being concerned. I get that. It’s the same type of “unconcern” that say Palin supporters have. The piont I was trying to make is that the meme is being crafted for non-supporters/fence sitters not to his supporters. And to the people making the arguement that the press will be less hatfule toward someone like Chrisite.

The pinot is that non of these attacks will matter much to the supports of the candidates but only to the ones undecidied. This is why moderates tend to lose general elections. They don’t really have a high level of support and once the media starts attacking them they quickly shed support from those fence sitters. It is only by havogn a high level and range of support that a candidate stands a chanc ein hell of voercoming the marxist media.

Gov. Christie’s ideology is correct.

Cindy Munford on February 17, 2011 at 8:08 AM

What ideology is that? That’s the central question. What is his ideology? What underlies his entire political perspective? If it is “I like to fight, and I like to win”, good luck when its a fight that undercuts every thing you believe in. Don’t get me wrong. I LIKE his style…a lot.

But, so far, the substance is: “When times are tough, we can’t spend like this.”

I’m not sold on that. I need to see more…a lot more.

I don’t know if it’s enough to make him the Republican nominee but he would make a he!! of Press Secretary.

Cindy Munford on February 17, 2011 at 8:08 AM

Yeow!!! I’m with you on that.

John Goodman on The West Wing.

Ooof. Chris Christie hardest hit.

Coulter and Christie
by Mark Levin on Wednesday, February 16, 2011

When will my dear friend Ann start to address the substantive problems with Christie’s actual positions or are we going to get another year of “only Christie can win” fortune cookie logic?

Does she support his positions on: gun control, amnesty, the appointment of an Islamist to the bench, the green agenda, his campaigning for Mike Castle, his MIA on health care litigation, etc.; and how does she think this would energize the base outside of New Jersey? Has the Tea Party even in NJ been pushing for his candidacy? No.

Glad you like my idea. I agree with you on the range of knowledge I have of Gov. Christie’s views in total ideology. So far so good but there is a lot to learn about him. Which won’t be a problem should he decide to run, he will be Palinized.

Cindy Munford on February 17, 2011 at 8:27 AM

Christie’s half-life is short. The YouTube vids were great, but the more time passes without substance to lend veracity to his rhetoric, the more he becomes a caricature of himself. Besides, he just isn’t very conservative.

He’s Scott Brown with a weight problem.

pugwriter on February 17, 2011 at 8:29 AM

Cindy Munford on February 17, 2011 at 8:27 AM

He has a record that isn’t getting the play that his 2 minute youtube videos have. I don’t like it, but I’m willing to hear him respond to questions about his less-than-impressive conservatives credentials.

So far, he doesn’t go there. With me, that’s wrong foot, bad start.

Saltysam on February 17, 2011 at 8:34 AM

For we conservatives, Christie needn’t even be on our national radar; he isn’t running. The man may be a RINO but he isn’t a moron and he knows he has no chance of getting through the primaries with his well crafted “fiscal tough guy” reputation in tact.

pugwriter on February 17, 2011 at 8:41 AM

This is the reaction real union busting gets.

I have to admit that I like the show and so far I see no repercussions he can have outside of New Jersey. It will be interesting to see the final product of such bravado. It’s refreshing to see someone push back.
