Democrats plan to battle GOP to keep Planned Parenthood funding

posted at 3:36 pm on February 15, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Republicans have Democrats worried that the GOP may take the notion of cutting off Planned Parenthood a little too seriously these days. According to Politico, they plan to fight to preserve Title X funding and prevent a statutory ban on grant funding for the nation’s largest abortion provider. Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) accuses the GOP of waging a “war on women,” while Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) dives into incoherence:

Republicans won’t ax funding for a program that supports health organizations like Planned Parenthood without a fight, a band of Democrats said Tuesday.

Under the GOP’s current spending proposal, a program, called Title X, will be slashed completely, drastically reducing the services family-planning clinics can provide, including cancer screenings, testing for sexually transmitted diseases, and contraception for low-income women, Democrats say. Last year, the program cost $317 million. Separately, Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) plans to file an amendment to the spending bill that would bar Planned Parenthood from receiving federal funds. He filed a similar stand-alone bill last week.

“The Republicans want to shrink government so small that it just fits right inside our bedrooms,” said Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) at a press conference on Capitol Hill Tuesday.

Actually, it sounds like Schakowsky and others want to keep government in the bedroom.  After all, isn’t that what funding does?  If Schakowsky truly wanted government out of the bedroom, she would work to stop funding those actions that occur in the bedroom.  The bills proposed by the Republicans wouldn’t make Planned Parenthood or efforts currently funded by Title X illegal — they just want taxpayers to stop footing the bill for it.

As for waging a “war on women,” which women would that be?  Those 14-year-olds that work in sex rings run by pimps that get advice on avoiding law enforcement by Planned Parenthood clinics?  Or those 14-year-olds that clinics refuse to release and claim that pregnancy has emancipated them from parental control?

Meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi has another way to claim that Republicans put “women and children last.” Greg Hengler captures the former Speaker’s response to her successor, telling the House that Democrats have a better approach to fixing the deficit than the cuts proposed by the GOP — “investments”:

Pelosi leaves out some significant context from her remarks.  First, John Boehner said this as part of the “so be it” remarks:

“In the last two years, under President Obama, the federal government has added 200,000 new federal jobs,” Mr. Boehner told reporters Tuesday morning during a press conference in the lobby of the Republican National Committee, according to various news outlets. “If some of those jobs are lost, so be it. We’re broke.”

In other words, if we lose some of the bureaucratic jobs added over the last two years as part of federal spending cuts, well, that’s part of the process.  Second, it was Pelosi and her Democrats that took annual spending from $2.77 trillion in FY2007, the last Republican budget, to $3.8 trillion in FY2010 and FY2011, an increase of 38% in just three years.  How much more “investment” do we need before the red ink turns to black?  Because under Pelosi’s leadership, it just kept getting more and more red.

Can “Palomino” Pelosi explain how a policy against abortion puts children LAST?

Last time I checked, there were quite a few people willing to adopt children but not necessarily a lot of kids available to be adopted.

Sounds good to me. In fact, let’s make it small enough to fit inside the bedroom of one of those “spacious” NYC apartments.

Yet more evidence that the modern democrat party is just entirely out of touch with Americans. People have been out of work now for more than 2 years, food prices are soaring, college tuition is unaffordable, gas prices are climbing and promise to be staggering by summer, and half of homeowners are under water. And the dems think Americans will go to the mat for the “right” to keep paying for other people’s abortions? Yeah. That’s why voters are so pissed off. They want to pay for more abortions, and they want to pay for it right now!

Rational Thought on February 15, 2011 at 3:46 PM

What is it with these Dems and “investments”? Is that the only word that they could get their focus groups to smile on?
BTW, Nancy, how is killing children “putting them first”? First in the dumpster?

One of my jobs when I was young was in a bank. I worked in New Accounts and Customer Service.

Obama and the Democrats remind me of the woman who came to my desk for help and said “I still have checks in my checkbook, how can my account be empty?”

Common Sense on February 15, 2011 at 3:50 PM

Dear Republican Leaders: here’s a messaging tip for you.

Garner massive support for gutting Planned Parenthood funding by loudly and proudly proclaiming that you are doing this to “put an immediate stop to the unconscionable genocide being ruthlessly waged against inner-city African-Americans day in and day out by mean-spirited, heartless corporate eugenicists who seek profits by perverting a woman’s right to choose “

FlameWarrior on February 15, 2011 at 3:52 PM

Seven Percent Solution on February 15, 2011 at 3:56 PM

OF COURSE they are going to battle on this. Abortion is their religion, their most-high sacrament. Abortion is the one issue that they will die on any hill for, the one issue they would even be willing to lose their political future on. And they’ve deluded themselves into thinking this is their highest honor…the have bloodlust for it because they have supported abortion so long and so vehemently, that if they actually looked at the reality of what they have done they couldn’t face themselves. Their very identity is wrapped up in convincing themselves abortion is a great good upon the land.

Talk about what is evil being called good…the modern democrat party becomes more disgusting and objectionable every single day.

JustTruth101 on February 15, 2011 at 3:57 PM

Didn’t the dems only fund the SCHIP expansion for a couple of years? Cut the funding for PP/NPR/NEA/etc to extend the funding of SCHIP under the paygo rules. Make them vote against healthcare for children.

I doubt the GOP will let the SCHIP expansion go unfunded, so they might as well get something out of it when they extend the funding.

Amen to that!!!

If I had my way, abortion would be illegal, but since it’s not, it’s still not right to force tax payers to foot the bill for abortions, when their conscience, beliefs, and moral compass tells them it’s wrong.

If liberals want to force us to pay, then they should also want to pay for counselors, and clinics that provide information, ultrasounds, and guidance to mothers seeking them. Obviously PP is only in the business to pedal abortions. It’s their main source of income, outside of the tax payers.

Abortion truly means the “culture of death,” as the Pope calls the environment around this secular society that does not value life, even the life of an unborn child. It is chilling and horrifying that a so-called Catholic (Pelosi) even argues about the good of abortion.

Um, No.

Point 1: there is an 83-85% correlation between parents and their childrens worldviews

Point 2: Socially conservative women rarely abort.

Point 3: Most fiscal conservatives are also social conservatives.

Conclusion: Abortions selectively cull liberals. Look up “Roe Effect”. Note that the fertility rates in the US are lowest in the liberal states and highest in the conservative states.

Murf76 on February 15, 2011 at 4:44 PM

It’s a great fight to have – the evil is being done against the black children sacrificed on the alter of liberalism’s chant – victims, victims, victims. Truth be known, far too many could give a darn about killing off black babies -and that’s in both parties and in both the white and black races.

You may throw God out of the public square – but you’ll have to deal with Obama’s mentor (Saul Alinski’s) friend Satan when you do. It won’t be pretty.
