Video: Niall Ferguson destroys Obama over Egypt
posted at 5:31 pm on February 14, 2011 by Allahpundit
A video accompaniment to this morning’s NewsBeast piece, in which he lays into Obama for equivocating and into his advisors for failing to foresee that a sick, elderly, widely despised fascist might be ripe for the picking by a discontented public. The clip is long but you’ll enjoy every minute, from Mika’s rose-colored visions of revolution being shattered to our bumbling intelligence braintrust derided as “third-rate” to The One’s grand “strategy” on foreign policy summarized as “I’m not George W. Bush. Love me.” Good lord, man — no need to use the brass knuckles.
Just one nagging question: Which grand strategy should Obama have pursued in lieu of the one he chose, i.e. backing Mubarak and then hedging once demonstrators forced a direct confrontation? In the clip, Ferguson mentions American assistance to dissidents in eastern Europe during the Soviet era, which helped prepare the ground for transitioning to liberal democracy once Russian hegemony collapsed. Not only hasn’t The One reached out to Egyptian liberals, he actually cut the funding provided to them by Bush’s administration once he took office. (In fact, Bush’s efforts to promote democracy did have some effect on the Egyptian protests.) Should he have continued that funding or even increased it in anticipation of chaos breaking out once the old pharaoh died or tried to hand power to his son Gamal? If he had, given the now infamous poll numbers from Pew about how Egyptians view the role of Islam in politics and punishments like stoning for adultery, what confidence is there that that funding would have achieved anything? The problem with Egypt isn’t that there are no liberal democrats; the fear is that, unlike in eastern Europe, there aren’t enough to sustain a liberal democracy even if the U.S. somehow buys one into existence. Which, of course, is why so many people (Ferguson presumably among them) expect that American interests in the Middle East are bound to suffer no matter what sort of government comes out of this.
The other problem with Egypt, of course, is the fear of contagion. With Iraq, contagion was a virtue because the countries in its immediate sphere of influence — Iran, Syria, and Iran’s Hezbollah proxy in Lebanon — were U.S. enemies. Turning Iraq into a democracy was supposed to inspire the Shiites and Sunnis next door to demand the same thing, which necessarily meant more liberal, western-oriented regimes. The proverbial anti-American dominoes would fall. Mubarak, however, was probably more western-oriented than whatever will come after him, and the Saudi royals are definitely more western-oriented. If democracy fever crosses the Red Sea from Egypt into the Kingdom, contagious from one great Sunni power to another, all hell will break loose. (Which helps explain why Bush, the great neocon liberator, was happy to be photographed literally holding hands with Abdullah.) So I ask again: Knowing all that, knowing that democracy in Egypt could mean an elected government of Wahhabist lunatics in Saudi Arabia, what was The One supposed to have done differently to prepare for the end of Mubarak? The best answer I can come up with — which I’ve given you in a previous post — is to go all-in on regime change in Iran so that aspiring democrats around the region can see for themselves how ecstatic Iranians are to be free from an Islamist regime. Might make fencesitters in Egypt think twice before voting for the Muslim Brotherhood. Or at least, that’s what I tell myself.

He will NEVER be asked to be a guest on MSNBC again.

Statement of the Green Path of Hope Coordination Council Regarding the February 14th Demonstrations
*******************************************
The coordination council of the Green Path of Hope has issued a statement supporting the February 14th demonstrations, holding the interior ministry responsible for their safety and for taking measures to ensure the grandeur of the demonstrations.A segment of the council’s statement reads “The noble people of Iran and followers of the green movement should participate in this peaceful demonstration with calm and resolve, and must not allow the infiltrating agents of those seeking violence to derail the demonstrations with their aggressive behavior under any circumstances.”
The full text of this statement is as follows:
**********************************************
In the Name of God,
We congratulate the freedom seeking and justice pursuing people of Egypt and Iran for the fall of the pharaoh-esque dictatorship of Mubarak, and we strongly protest the recent widespread illegal incarcerations as well as the heavy increase of illegal restrictions on Messrs. Mousavi and Karroubi which verifies the ruling autocrats’ weakness and fear of any civil and political movement of the people, even of the most peaceful kind, and we also lament the pattern of law breaking by the officials in charge of executing the law. With this, we declare:
1. As part of the interior ministry’s responsibility to uphold its legal obligations and the people’s legal rights guaranteed in article 27 of the constitution, this ministry has a duty to issue a license for demonstrations in support of the people’s movements in Tunisia and Egypt in response to the request made by Messrs. Mousavi and Karroubi. Furthermore, this ministry must immediately inform the public of all measures taken to ensure the safety of citizens and the peaceful holding of the demonstrations. Failure to respond to this request and to take the necessary measures to hold the demonstrations peacefully will disgrace the government of Iran on national and international levels and will basically undermine its official stance in supporting the people’s movements of Tunisia and Egypt.
2. The noble people of Iran and followers of the green movement should participate in this peaceful demonstration with calm and resolve, and must not allow the infiltrating agents of those seeking violence to derail the demonstrations with their aggressive behavior under any circumstances.
Our promise, we meet on Monday February 14, 2011, 3:00pm in Tehran from Imam Hossein Square to Azadi Square.

You mean the three strategies he chose, no?
How about one that overtly assures our allies in the region that they have our continued support and that we honor our commitments but quietly persuades Mubarack that he’s got to go and we’ll make it possible for him to go safely. How about something like that?
Too complicated, I guess.

Well given that the man was 82, and that the army didn’t support his son taking over, you’d think they might have gamed out a face-saving exit strategy for him that allowed us to claim to be on the side of freedom while keeping our interests front and center.
Instead, the minions in CNN try to incite a revolution and the idiot in the White House alternately tells him to jump/don’t jump as he hovers on the brink. Meanwhile, Panetta tells him what’s on TV tonight.

Power of Egypt’s Workers Moves To Center Stage
Egyptian Workers Hold Key to Uprising, New Union Association Issues Call for General Strike
——————————————-
End of Hated Anti-Union Law No. 100 Preceded Uprising
Barely reported in the West, among the crowds at Tahrir Square last Sunday, a new trade union confederation was announced, the Federation of Egyptian Trade Unions (FETU), which immediately issued a call for a general-strike. The call has been widely taken up, and many reports now link the uprising to unity with the workers, particularly in Suez, where the battle has been fought most intensely with state police. The new confederation has the support of the International Trades Union Confederation and the AFL-CIO.
The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that the general strike call initiated from workers in Suez. Whoever initiated it, the new trade union organizations are jumping on board.
Law No. 100 has regulated union internal activities since 1993, by setting quotas for attendance for elections to union offices, and putting judicial controls on unions that cannot meet the stringent requirements. The FETU leadership includes the head of the Real Estate Tax Authority Workers union, or RETA, the first independent union in Egypt in over 50 years. RETA itself is not recognized by the Egyptian state. The Center for Trade Union and Workers Services (CTUWS), also a part of the new FETU, had its headquarters closed by the government in 2007, and was only allowed to reopen in July 2008.

In the interview above, Ferguson is given numerous opportunities to explain what he would have done differently, and fails each time to provide anything of substance. This leads me to believe he was looking to get some exposure and make a quick buck by appealing to a ready-made constituency (HA readers and Fox news viewers) who will love his article and thoroughly enjoy watching this MSNBC video online. Having Mika as the clueless foil only makes his job in advertising his pointless article that much easier.
None of this changes the fact that notwithstanding what happens going forward, the current situation in Egypt is about the best any freedom-and-democracy-loving conservative could hope for at this point in time, and it came about during Obama’s presidency, not Bush’s.

Seeing the initial protests were in response to food shortages (if i’m not mistaken), then immediate shipments of grains and a quick announced of a future trade agreement to relieve pressure on long-term food prices could have stablized the situation… with a behind the scenes pressure to a more liberalized, multi-party democratic / republic process…

It’s tough to compare the Egyptian scenario with that of Eastern Europe, seeing as in the former soviet republics we weren’t the ones propping up their tyrannical regimes. In Egypt, US support is a touch of death when it comes to popular opinion; there were no good options in terms of US strategic interest, so best to just step up and cheer on the r3volution.

I’ll never forget the look on Netanyahu’s face the first time he came to the White House and met Obama. It was sheer shock. I truly believe he was astonished to realize what an absolute, mind-blowing moron the U.S. had elected as president. (This was the meeting before he was snubbed for dinner.)…and with the latest turn of events, I’m sure, although he intellectually resolved it in his mind two years ago, this has been the betrayal he always feared, but hoped against hope, that would never actually occur.

Very amusing. Very funny to watch Mika. I mean here is a woman that is supposed to be a “journalist.” These people claim to be seeking out a story where ever it may lead. And you can see her so visibly frustrated because her only recourse in light of a complete opposition to her personal narrative, was to begin to mock Ferguson.
And Ferguson had far, far better arguments. Beyond all of the lies and cheerleading of the MSM, they’ve allowed themselves to become so intellectually full and uniformed. When someone who can articulate a real argument comes along, they scatter like cockroaches to light.

The instant that happened and it became apparent that the S was about to HTF, he should have done a live speech on Al Jazeera explaining in the simplest of terms why we have supported Mubarak for the last 30 years (peace), but that the United States can no longer support him as it is apparent that his people no longer support him. Explain we want peace in the region, but we do not want it at the cost of freedom to the Egyptian people.
The credit he would have gotten would have been amazing and it certainly would have helped out image in Egypt as a country.

I love how they tried to bait Ferguson with the usual “Oh yeah? Well I bet you loved Bush!” routine so they can set up their usual moronic dichotomy and beat him over the head with it. Like they’re dragging a chew toy in front of a puppy. The arrogance of the people at MSNBC is revolting.
And who the hell was that clown who was saying to Ferguson “Well you seem to think history is static” as if he’s in a position to talk down to Ferguson about his scholarship? We all have the right to disagree but Ferguson knows more about history than that clown ever will and by a very wide margin.

O/T but just say’n: Mubarek is 82. Isn’t Soros about the same?
Well he did say, I can’t remember, but he bugled a word, like nuclear, well, that was that. You cannot respect any man to represent the United States of America, and say such a thing. Just do a survey in downtown Baltimore. They’ll tell ya.
