New CPAC chief: We might have to dump GOProud for taunting the boycotters

posted at 7:59 pm on February 10, 2011 by Allahpundit

This smells like a pretext to drop them from next year’s conference, thereby clearing the way for socially conservative boycotters to return. Even so, although I support GOProud, I admit to cringing a bit at Chris Barron goofing on boycotters as having exiled themselves to the “Island of Political Misfit Toys” or whatever. It’s not that DeMint et al. can’t take it — Barron himself, I’m sure, could offer a few insights from his formative years about dealing with taunts and name-calling — but doing an end-zone dance over such a contentious disagreement is foolishly and needlessly alienating. And as Barron himself admits, some of his criticism is gratuitously nasty and unfair to its targets:

The new chair of the American Conservative Union, Al Cardenas, today distanced his organization from GOProud, telling FrumForum in an exclusive interview that “it’s going to be difficult to continue the relationship” with the gay conservative organization…

“I have been disappointed with their website and their quotes in the media, taunting organizations that are respected in our movement and part of our movement, and that’s not acceptable. And that puts them in a difficult light in terms of how I view things,” said Cardenas.

GOProud had asserted that Cleta Mitchell, the chairman of the ACU Foundation, was pushing conservative groups and individuals to boycott CPAC because of GOProud’s inclusion. Chris Barron, the chairman of GOProud, recently said in an interview that Mitchell was “a nasty bigot.”…

Asked for GOProud’s response, the group’s chairman apologized for his comments about Cleta Mitchell.

“For the past six months, we have watched as unfair and untrue attacks have been leveled against our organization, our allies, our friends and sometimes even their families. Everyone has their breaking point and clearly in my interview with Metro Weekly I had reached mine. I shouldn’t have used the language that I did to describe Cleta Mitchell and for that I apologize,” said Chris Barron.

Follow the link up top and you’ll see that Cardenas does want more diversity at CPAC, but by that he seems to mean racial/ethnic diversity. When asked specifically about gay marriage, he referred to “time-tested values” and said that you can’t be a “Ronald Reagan conservative” if you support it. I’ve seen that point made quite a bit in the last few days, actually — that CPAC is, after all, a conservative conference, not a Republican one. So maybe that’s the solution for big-tenters who want a place for the GOProuds of the world on the right. Start an alternative conference, organized chiefly around fiscal responsibility, and leave CPAC to the social cons (the Values Voter Summit isn’t enough, it seems). You might even get Palin to attend: To her credit, Sarahcuda told Hannity last night that she’s not sure why we’re wrangling over who can and can’t participate at CPAC when there are far more pressing tasks for the right to deal with. She keeps talking like that, soon she’ll be running op-eds at Reason.

Speaking of which, here’s Reason’s Michael Moynihan reporting from day one of the conference. Exit question: If Cardenas is all about time-tested values, what’s gay-marriage supporter Dick Cheney doing there?

Tired of CPAC already.

Blake on February 10, 2011 at 8:06 PM

I was supportive of GOProud at CPAC and said it was dumb to boycott because of their presence.

But that “nasty bigot” remark was unhelpful. Especially with conservatives already wary of being labeled racist, sexist, xenophobobic, etc. for opposing certain policies and politicians.

amerpundit on February 10, 2011 at 8:06 PM

Coulda told him that years ago. They’re just figuring this out? DUH! Conservatives shouldn’t have anything to do with a group who agrees with the SEIU and has NOW members. Again, DUH! At this point I don’t care if CPAC learns their lesson or not. The ship has sailed to ever listening to anything from these jerks again. AND, Grubby Norquist is involved so that right there says a whole lot. Idiots.

sonnyspats1 on February 10, 2011 at 8:15 PM

I’m saying that on a day when Cheney gets shouted at by a leftard at CPAC who gets in under the banner of the Ron Paul movement, folks are going nuts over gays?

They see traditional marriage as the problem. There is no way to talk about a solution with them.

PrezHussein on February 10, 2011 at 8:16 PM

Awesome! So who do they boycott over next? How many do they boycott until the Conservative Political Action Conference becomes the Christian Political Action Conference?

I mean, after all, we can’t have groups at CPAC that identify themselves as gays first, conservatives second. We can only have groups that identify themselves as Christians first, conservatives second.

Then goproud and some people here have a hissy fit over the fact that others are executing their right not to attend. And we are given a long lecture how goproud and Barron are conservatives.

So, again, I want those people to explain how Barron is some superdooper conservative when he was an effin lobbyist for PP.

I’m not a big fan of Barron. However, the overwhelming objection to GOProud was not over their leader, but about their identity as gay conservatives, not just “conservatives”. Which is understandable, coming from a bunch of groups that identify as Christian conservatives.

I shouldn’t have used the language that I did to describe Cleta Mitchell and for that I apologize,” said Chris Barron.

But the sentiment remains.

Outside of talk, I have yet to see any affirming action on the part of GOProud to any conservative values. While I will concede that I think marriage is something that should be decided at the state level, the Judiciary has taken it out of the hands of the states and thus only federal action can prevent a state’s population from being forced into accepting same sex marriage.

GOProud talks great when they have absolute control of the media they are using, but get them unscripted and you see through the big talk of “conservatism” and find out they are really just about the same every other gay pride group in the country.

“Exit question: If Cardenas is all about time-tested values, what’s gay-marriage supporter Dick Cheney doing there?”

Depends on what he is doing there. If he talking and acting out on conservative values and not denigrating other conservatives, he is a great asset. That is all I would ask of GOProud in order for them to be sponsors I support, but last year and this year it has been more about attacking the “gay haters” than about talking conservatism. GOProud is the distraction that destroys every bit of talk about actual conservative values. They could have avoided all this controversy by talking solely about conservative values, and they would have gained much acceptance from that. If it truly is about character, the character attacks leveled from GOProud indicate they are not in the same league as many other organizations in the conservative movement.

I agree with Cardenas. I’m strongly pro-abortion and like to bomb throw in the abortion threads here at HotAir, but if I were leader of a conservative organization I would be much nicer about the “pro-lifers”. It’s quite one thing to be some anonymous jerk on a blog. It’s another thing to lead. And I’m not just saying I would be nicer about pro-lifers publicly. It would go down deep into the secret recesses of my mind and soul, because my common causes with pro-lifers would be great enough for me to not to want to risk being caught in duplicity.
Someone really needs to explain this to Chris Barron of GoPROUD. He can do great things for conservatism, but he needs to tone down his attitudes about the anti-gay social cons. It is too divisive for someone in a leadership to be throwing rhetorical bombs.

Social conservatism, the fabric of our nation is what prevents fiscal irresponsibility. It is the lack of self control and personal responsibility that allows people to be selfish enough to constantly turn to government for help.

So long as the country is on the train to social progressivism, there is no real hope in bringing about fiscal responsibility. People need to be shamed in order for them to not go asking from the government.

Meanwhile the “true conservatives” are hand wringing over Teh Gheys and the Ronulans are showing their asses at CPAC.

Any group that would boo Dick Cheney needs to be run out of town on a rail.

Alex Jones needs to have his own conference. He can have all of the nut bags in one place at one time.

Sarah Palin is wise indeed.

gary4205 on February 10, 2011 at 8:42 PM

That whole post needed to be quoted for truth. And beer.

Sekhmet on February 10, 2011 at 8:44 PM

Someone really needs to explain this to Chris Barron of GoPROUD. He can do great things for conservatism, but he needs to tone down his attitudes about the anti-gay social cons. It is too divisive for someone in a leadership to be throwing rhetorical bombs.

thuja on February 10, 2011 at 8:35 PM

Absolutely. Especially when, as we’ve seen, there are some groups on the conservative side willing to throw a tantrum simply over the fact that they’re gay conservatives. A better director could have handled this with a lot more class.

Though, to be fair, were some of his comments any less in-your-face than Palin’s crack about Santorum?

MadisonConservative on February 10, 2011 at 8:44 PM

Even if they were going to do that, do you think they’d do it right in the middle of CPAC, particularly with all this furor?

MadisonConservative on February 10, 2011 at 8:41 PM

…only if he posted a bare-chested pic on Craigslist ; )

The Ugly American on February 10, 2011 at 8:44 PM

My last post was all about creating a night of peace and love here. But I wouldn’t bet that I succeed.

You want peace and love, get some beads, a guitar, and build a campfire out near an old growth forest.

I can’t wait until the generational shift in the GOP on gay rights issues is fully progressed.

It’s Vintage, Duh on February 10, 2011 at 8:23 PM

Can you flesh out what that generational shit on gay rights issues will look like?

Will it include shouting the gay lifestyle from the mountaintops and incorporating into the curriculum of public school students from the time they leave their sandboxes and enter kindergarten?

Awesome./

BuckeyeSam on February 10, 2011 at 8:46 PM

Nice. Jeebus. So when does CPAC allow the abortionists to have their own booth, you know, in the spirit of big tentedness.

Bishop on February 10, 2011 at 8:43 PM

When “Pro-abortion Conservatives United” shows up with a ten point platform detailing how conservative they are in their pro-abortion identity, you be sure and let us know. I’m pretty sure it’ll be more than Tony Randall making a stink.

MadisonConservative on February 10, 2011 at 8:46 PM

So you’re saying social conservatives would hook up with socialists just to satisfy their religious beliefs?

You know that? I think you’re right.

MadisonConservative on February 10, 2011 at 8:32 PM

Actually, the two groups have more in common than most people think. Legitimate arguments can be made that Christ espoused socialistic views, and that there is no place for the definite “I got mine, screw everyone else” attitude floating around.

The one fly in the ointment there is that He never advocated using secular government to enforce same…but it’s just a small leap of logic for the people who want to go that route. And since our government is driven by the people – if the people vote for such things they’ll become law.

Something to keep an eye on, for sure.

Hello.

And yet we don’t see Cardenas hanging her out to dry.

The Ugly American on February 10, 2011 at 8:47 PM

I can see if the leaders of CPAC do not change they and the “establishment” GOP will both go the way of the Whig party and go bye bye to history.

Oops. Sorry all.

Sh*t = shift. I forgot to preview, but I see red when I see phrases such as “fully progressed.”

So violence and hate is a core right-wing belief?

Well at least you’re not the first.

Dark-Star on February 10, 2011 at 8:48 PM

I don’t care who the head of GOPROUD used to work for. Do you seriously think the objection to GOPROUD is based on their leadership?

Jesus Christ. It’s been a long day.

There are rock stars with amusing performance contracts all over thesmokinggun who are less high-maintenance than social conservatives can be sometimes.

Sekhmet on February 10, 2011 at 8:41 PM

I’ll say; even the biggest rock concerts eventually pack up shop and go the **** away, and you can shut them out with a good pair of earplugs.

Dark-Star on February 10, 2011 at 8:50 PM

So much for that “Big Tent” mentality. The “we are diverse” CPAC organizers must be tearing their hair out.
