Obama: Oh, by the way, I haven’t raised taxes once

posted at 8:19 pm on February 8, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via Amy Proctor, it’s a few days old but too exquisitely shameless to let pass. How shameless? So shameless that even his pals at PolitiFact, who normally can be trusted to shill for him on ObamaCare, can’t absolve him:

The idea that Obama did not raise taxes is just plain wrong. He signed legislation raising taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco products soon after taking office; that money goes to pay for children’s health insurance programs. The law went into effect in 2009. He also signed the health care law, which includes taxes on indoor tanning that went into effect last year. (Regular PolitiFact readers will remember our fact-check of reality TV star Snooki and her complaint about the new tax last year.)

The new health care law also includes a tax on people who decide not to have health insurance, as an incentive for them to get coverage. The tax phases in gradually, starting in 2014. By 2016, the tax would be $695 per uninsured person up to a maximum of three times that amount, or $2,085. The law includes exemptions for people who can’t find affordable insurance, and a few other special circumstances.

More significantly, the health care law includes new taxes on the wealthy, starting in 2013. Individuals who make more than $200,000 and couples that make more than $250,000 will see additional Medicare taxes of 0.9 percent. They will also, for the first time, have to pay Medicare taxes on their investment income at a 3.8 percent rate. (Current law is that all workers and employers split a 2.9 percent Medicare tax; the self-employed pay all of it.)

Remember, this guy’s own Justice Department has taken to claiming that the mandate is a tax as a fallback argument in court for its constitutionality. According to Grover Norquist’s group, ObamaCare alone is responsible for raising more than two dozen distinct taxes, with another massive tax hike to come in two years if Democrats somehow manage to let the Bush tax cuts finally lapse. And yet here he is, not only cheerily lying to a Super Bowl audience but later advising O’Reilly that Fox News would be a lot better if it concentrated less on spin and more on … facts.

Exit question: Are the taxes going to be mentioned in the ObamaCare comic book? Probably not, right?

d1carter on February 8, 2011 at 8:31 PM

The Progressive ideology (Modern Liberalism, statism, etc.) does not work. It has been tried over and over and over again, here and across the globe for centuries.

It will always end up failing.

This is why they lie. They have no choice: their ideology makes them feel really great about themselves but unfortunately will never actually work in reality for an extended period of time. Misery, poverty and grievances will be the result. Sad.

Cindy Munford on February 8, 2011 at 8:41 PM

Sometimes I wonder if Obama and the misses just try to outdo each other with whoppers, just to see how far the American public will buy into their big charade. So far, fantastic. Like a dream come true. Unfortunately, not unlike the Hollywood, overpriced, over-paid types, they become more callous, jaded, wanting and expecting more and more, yet, curiously pressing for something to stop them, but then getting deranged and belligerent at the same moment. Bewildering, it is.

Did anybody except Grover Norquist or some bloggers say anything?

Who and where is the leader of this emasculated joke of a political party?

PPACA lowered the maximum FSA election, making a larger portion of millions of people’s health expenditures payable only with post-tax dollars. It also made large categories of health expenses (OTC medications, for example, without a doctor’s note) ineligible for FSA, thereby meaning they could only be bought with post-tax dollars.

That’s a tax increase too, Mr. President, although I’m sure you knew that.

DrSteve on February 9, 2011 at 10:11 AM

The main basis for the well overplayed rumor of Barry’s brillince is that in his knowledge and dedication to radical leftist idilogy makes him appear to ‘smart’ (to those who also lean that way). In reality he is not well versed in the ways of the world… only in his specialty… Socialism.
-
This is akin to a wanna be musician who practices a single song over and over until he can play it with such style and grace that it makes lovers of that song weep… The rest of us, not so much. Especially, if the song is of the love-it-or-hate-it type…
-
When he tries to play a different song he always fumbles back into his song (think Joe the Plumber). Claiming to be able to play Mozart (Reagan)… Does not make it so… At those times he ends up showing his inner Milli Vanilli…
