Bad news: Centrist group collapses after party is captured by ideological extremists

posted at 6:51 pm on February 7, 2011 by Allahpundit

No, not the Republican Party.

The Democratic Leadership Council, the iconic centrist organization of the Clinton years, is out of money and could close its doors as soon as next week, a person familiar with the plans said Monday.

The DLC, a network of Democratic elected officials and policy intellectuals had long been fading from its mid-’90s political relevance, tarred by the left as a symbol of “triangulation” at a moment when there’s little appetite for intra-party warfare on the center-right. The group tried — but has failed — to remake itself in the summer of 2009, when its founder, Al From, stepped down as president. Its new leader, former Clinton aide Bruce Reed, sought to remake the group as a think tank, and the DLC split from its associated think tank, the Progressive Policy Institute…

The DLC is already showing signs of disrepair. Its website currently leads a Harold Ford op-ed from last November, titled, “Yes we can collaborate.” It lists as its staff just four people, and has only one fellow. Recent tax returns weren’t immediately publicly available, but returns from 2004-2008 show a decline in its budget from $2.6 million to $1.5 million, and a source said funding further dried up during the financial crisis that began nine months before Reed took over.

Geraghty reminds us that nutroots icons like Kos have been gunning for the DLC for years, but I think the Council simply outlived its purpose. Virtually everyone in Congress who might have listened to them — i.e. the Blue Dogs — was wiped out in the big red tsunami in November, and the few survivors left in the south are now busily converting to the GOP to protect themselves. There are other groups available to lobby from the center (Third Way, No Labels), and Democrats are fully aware of how desperately they need to win back independents in 2012 to reelect Obama. They have every incentive, in other words, to tack right on some issues without Harold Ford urging them to do so. The only question: Can Nancy bring herself to do it?

In other “centrist Democrats imploding” news, Jane Harman announced today that she’s quitting Congress, which almost certainly means she’ll be replaced by someone more liberal, and Heath Shuler turned up on Scarborough’s show to confirm that, yes indeed, Pelosi is happy to entirely ignore the Blue Dogs in her caucus. Exit question: Where do moderate Democrats turn now? To the master of triangulation himself? Or to characters even more sinister?

Welcome back MoFo! I was wondering if anyone here was gonna post this story. This is YUUUGE! The Libtards have taken over the Democrats completely.

Exit question: Where do moderate Democrats turn now?

does it matter? If they go republican, they will be RINO’s. If they go hardcore left, they are going to be even more blue dog.

Independent? Libertarian?

upinak on February 7, 2011 at 6:55 PM

hey AP nice to ‘see’ you. As a recovering Dem, a Huge Clinton supporter and a self described fiscal conservative/social libertarian I am very sad to see the DLC close shop..

it was the best hope the Dems had to regain their sanity and retake the WH in ’16 IMO.

Of course, that is why the neoprogs want it dead.

anyway, most of we fiscal conservative pro growth Dems are Alllready Gone.

will the last sane Democrat please turn off the lights?

ginaswo on February 7, 2011 at 6:56 PM

My reaction to this news is the same reaction to the news that AOL bought HuffPo.

The DLC/AOL is still around? Man talk about a blast from the mid 90s past in today’s news. What’s next, Mili Vanilli reunion tour?

angryed on February 7, 2011 at 6:56 PM

Too bad, so sad.

tommer74 on February 7, 2011 at 6:57 PM

Of course, “No Labels” ismeant for Republican membership, only. When Moaning Joe whines and cries and whines, nary a Democrat is mentioned. Evah!

Marcus on February 7, 2011 at 6:57 PM

Lol portlandon, my thought exactly.

Immolate on February 7, 2011 at 6:57 PM

The DLC just needed a really good t-shirt design. You can’t have a political movement without one.

well you know, our votes do count as much as conservative GOP votes so we are handy to have around come Election Day :0>

but ya know upinak, the more time I spend around GOP bligs the more I think what you all call ‘moderate’ is what we used to call ‘conservative’.

I mean I think I can count on one hand the differences we have and none of them are on the fiscal side.

Free the Economy!
end crony capitalism.

ginaswo on February 7, 2011 at 6:58 PM

The DLC should be making great strides within the Democratic Party, but they just didn’t get the message in November, so they will continue to suffer along.

J_Crater on February 7, 2011 at 6:58 PM

Shuler’s already got a space on his car for the Obama ’12 sticker. Huddling with Trump is just a way for two people looking for some media attention to get it. Nancy won’t give this gambit by the surviving Blue Dogs a moment’s notice, because she knows he’ll come crawling back to the fold by next year’s DNC convention.

jon1979 on February 7, 2011 at 6:58 PM

What’s next, Mili Vanilli reunion tour?

A Vanilla Ice tour .. I’m sure.

J_Crater on February 7, 2011 at 7:00 PM

Can this party be saved? Who cares? All Democrat senators voted against the ObamaCare repeal. This is a self-inflicted marginalization of their party. They can turn to Boehner or McConnell if they want to be re-electable.

Terrie on February 7, 2011 at 7:00 PM

You would think the GOP would use this golden moment to begin a sustained effort to cast the Democrats as extremists.

pearson on February 7, 2011 at 7:01 PM

Just scanning the title, I thought this was another story about the chaos in Egypt.

slickwillie2001 on February 7, 2011 at 7:01 PM

Shuler got a wake up call in NC…for the first time in many, many decades we are Republican controlled, he better get in line, because the dems have caused serious problems here in NC.

right2bright on February 7, 2011 at 7:02 PM

LOL Trump? No way. His comb over look is just too awful. Be proud of your baldness Donald, like moi. Other than having the ChiComs sized up correctly, what are his positions on policy? He might make a good secretary of foreign commerce. Do we have that? Make him a Czar. That’s more fitting anyway.

you are right. My Dad was a conservative from everything I can remember. But now he would be a soc-con. Now I on the other had, just don’t GAS about social issues like others.

I don’t like the repeal of DADT, but then again I am not serving anymore.
Abortion to me is an abomination, but I am not God and I shouldn’t judge… though I will push adoption.
I believe that we should be focusing on finacial issues more so than who can marry who. I just don’t GAS!

The only “social” item that I will push for are “Don’t touch my Guns”. Other than that…. not my job to rule others lives.

Don’t know where Trump stands on any issues, but did see where he gave Rahm $50,000 for his campaign. Don’t see that as anything but being a liberal, certainly not my kind of republican.

The end of that last clip with Heath Shuler was great. Morning Joe actually snuck in a good question. And the candid answer he blurted out really told the tale!

“He he! Ronald Reagan, I’d say.”

p.s. does Mika Brzezinski ever get that “I’m a little confused . . . “ look off her face?

Trochilus on February 7, 2011 at 9:01 PM

Can Nancy bring herself to do it?

In a word, “No!”

That would require the ability to think. Nancy’s group spouts from “The Book of Socialism”. The only “truth” is Socialist Truth. And they’re going to their collective asses handed to them again in 2012.

GarandFan on February 7, 2011 at 9:23 PM

Good riddance.

The accent was always on “left”.

There is now all that “No Labels” nonsense taking up that slack.

but ya know upinak, the more time I spend around GOP bligs the more I think what you all call ‘moderate’ is what we used to call ‘conservative’.
ginaswo on February 7, 2011 at 6:58 PM

I would argue the opposite. Ten to fifteen years ago the idea of pushing for “gay marriage” would have gotten you laughed out of any DEMOCRATIC Party gathering. On the East Coast. I know. I was there.

I still remember when there were economically liberal pro-life Senators and Congressmen/women in the Democratic Party. They are almost all gone now.

As far as the Republcian go, leave it to the “stupid party” to throw pro-life over the side just when pro-life support is increasing, in order to satisfy the Tea Party.
