Super Bowl open thread

posted at 10:30 am on February 6, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

And so it comes down to two of the most storied franchises in the NFL, both named after working-class occupations in working-class towns.  The Green Bay Packers meet the Pittsburgh Steelers in perhaps the most impressive Super Bowl environment yet, the billion-dollar stadium that Jerry Jones built for the Dallas Cowboys.  The Packers bring three previous Super Bowl titles to the game, along with nine other league championships, but none more recent than 1996′s Super Bowl.  The Steelers bring six Super Bowl championships in seven appearances, including two in the last five years.

So far this season, I’ve gone 66-40 for regular-season picks and 7-3 in the playoffs.  This game will be tough to call for many reasons.  Obviously I’m backing the Steelers — if you’ve ever read an NFL open thread, you know that much — but I like the Packers as well.  They’ve played as tough as anyone in the last several weeks, and the Pack got to Dallas by winning three games on the road in the playoffs.  The last team to do that?  The Pittsburgh Steelers, in the 2005 season, and they won the Super Bowl.  They’re a fast team playing on turf, and their O-line is healthier than Pittsburgh’s.

But Pittsburgh has some advantages.  First, this is their third Super Bowl in six years, with 18 players having been together for all three.  They had to beat tough defenses to get here, especially the Ravens.  Green Bay beat the Bears defense to win their conference, but they haven’t seen a defense of the Steeler’s caliber in the playoffs.  Pittsburgh has a better run game and may be able to limit Aaron Rodgers’ number of opportunities through ball control, while the Steeler D should force Rodgers into passing through a superior run defense.

This should be a great game, a close game, and it may come down to the team that has the ball last.  I’m picking the Steelers to beat the Packers by a touchdown, 27-20.

“How lucky is Green Bay to lose a HOF quarterback and have it actually turn out to be an upgrade at the position?”

In fairness to that HOF QB, the Packers went from Super Bowl XXXI through the end of his stay in Green Bay with deteriorating and outright mediocre talent on both sides of the ball as well as the departure of the architects of the Super Bowl XXXI in GM Ron Wolf and Coach Mike Holmgren. The Packers suffered through a bad coach in Ray Rhodes and a mediocre one in Mike Sherman and Sherman as an incompetent GM.

Favre and Holmgren never accomplished separately what they did together.

In my experience, it’s neither of those, guys. People admire and respect the team and organization. It’s the obnoxious fans that people don’t like, especially the bandwagon fans who have ZERO association with Pittsburgh, even remotely. So they root for the team to lose so the fans will be disappointed.

JimP on February 7, 2011 at 12:46 PM

OK, here is my final report on the assorted aspects of the Patriots “spying” story; I got most of these details when I talked to a dear friend of mine who works at the Boston Herald. He worked on the stories.

I say stories because there were really 3 stories, and some of the facts from one of the stories have been crossed with facts from the other stories, and vice-versa.

1. The original story was the opening game against the Jets in the 2007 season. This is the one where the tapes were confiscated, and this is the violation that the team and coach were later fined for.

These were the “tapes that were destroyed”, not the later tapes from the character I will discuss in Story #3.

According to my reporter friend, the tapes were destroyed for a simple reason-the investigation had been concluded and the violators had been punished. And later, during Goodell’s press conference when he did show the other tapes, he was asked why he hadn’t done the same with the Jets tapes. His answer was that “releasing them during the season could have put some teams at a competitive advantage or disadvantage.”

2. The second story was the allegation that the Patriots had taped the Rams walk-thru before their Super Bowl meeting. This is the story the Boston Herald broke and later retracted. This story turned out to be false.

3. The third story involves Matt Walsh. This is the bitter former Patriots employee who was fired by the team for illegally recording the phone calls of his superiors. Goodell’s investigation also showed that Walsh had illegally scalped Super Bowl tickets. Nice guy.

According to the Associated Press:

Former Patriots video assistant Matt Walsh disclosed no new rules violations in the videotaping scandal during his meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday.

The NFL also released the tapes Walsh provided, shown after his nearly 3½-hour meeting with Goodell. The clips didn’t show any previously undisclosed rule violations, cutting between shots of opposing coaches sending in signals and the play that followed.

“The fundamental information that Matt provided was consistent with what we disciplined the Patriots for last fall,” said Goodell, who didn’t anticipate punishing the team any further.

From the same story (I edited out the sections about the Jets and Rams games for brevity)

Goodell said Walsh had no information about any other spying by the Patriots.

“There was no bugging of locker rooms,” Goodell said. “There was no manipulation of communication systems. There was no crowd noise violations anywhere that he was aware of. No miking of players to pick up opposing signals or audibles.”

The reason Goddell didn’t show all of the tapes Walsh gave him? There were too many of them for a relatively short press conference. He gave them 8 video tapes from 6 games played over a 3 season period, which isn’t a heck of a lot of games. All they showed was the coaches sending in signals, and the plays that followed.

It’s interesting to note that the most recent tape Walsh gave the NFL was from the 2002 season. The team has since then played in 3 Super Bowls, winning back-to-back SBs in 2003 and 2004.

So there we have the facts. The Patriots were disciplined for what they did in one game, and one game only. There was absolutely no conclusive evidence that they “cheated” in any other games.

Of course, there is a tiny minority out there who don’t believe any of these facts. Yet at the same time when one suggests to them that just possibly the referees gave the Steelers the Super Bowl game against the Seahawks with a timely bad call, they angrily pout and say no such thing is possible, because there is no “evidence”.

Sorry, but that is a hypocritical double standard. Because these same people are finding the Patriots guilty of multiple offenses, despite a total lack of evidence of such. In their world, evidence doesn’t matter, except when their own team is accused.

For those of you who are still convinced that the NFL is “covering up for the Patriots” in this case, as ethical fans you have no other choice but to boycott the NFL’s product. The fact that you haven’t by now is an admission that you accept the findings of the NFL’s investigation into this matter.

Case closed!

PS…just curious-if everyone is so convinced that the Patriots regularly “cheat”, why did Tom Brady get all 50 votes for MVP yesterday?

football is incredibly stupid and homoerotic.

no sarcasm.

Inanemergencydial on February 6, 2011 at 11:12 AM

I remember my officemate (from Germany) said American football was a stupid game. “Why not just give a ball to each team?”

Of course, I had to tell him European football (soccer) is incredibly more stupid-er, they don’t even have bone crunching tackles, and “Why not just give a ball to each team?”
