Valerie Jarrett to uniformed officer at Alfalfa Club dinner: Get me a glass of wine, would you?

posted at 5:41 pm on February 1, 2011 by Allahpundit

C’mon, this didn’t happen. No one’s this dumb and/or tactless. Are they?

According to our tipster, Jarrett was seated at the head table along with several other big-name politicians and a handful of high-ranking military officials. As an officer sporting several stars walked past Jarrett, she signaled for his attention and said, “I’d like another glass of wine.”…

White House economic adviser Austan Goolsbee, who was seated next to Jarret, began “cracking up nervously,” our tipster said, but no one pointed out to Jarrett that the man sporting a chestful of medals was not her waiter.

“The guy dutifully went up and got her a glass of wine, and then came back and gave it to her and took a seat at the table,” our tipster said. “Everyone is in tuxedos and gowns at this thing, but the military people are in full dress uniform.”

Help me figure this out. She’s sitting there at a table with military men, all of whom doubtless were fully adorned with decorations. Which means she (a) knows the military is there and in uniform and (b) surely realizes that the officers around her would be gravely and rightly offended at being treated like gophers for some overrated Obama Chicago crony. Which in turn means this never happened, or at least that it didn’t happen quite like this. Maybe she was kidding with the guy? Or maybe she’d grabbed him a drink earlier in the evening and assumed he’d repay the favor? Waiters don’t usually wear medals, do they? C’mon.

Comparable to the Clintons who had the military function as waiters at some of their functions. Typical Leftist. Dissing the military every chance they get.

Only, and i mean only, because we on the Right should at least wait for confirmation to target a Leftard elitist. (sorry about the “target”…put yer hateful right wing rhetorical guns down). If this were a Bush White House member a few years back, the Left wouldn’t take the high road…but we should.

Goodness, based on the wikipedia description (thanks jetboy), the alfalfa club sounds like just a bunch of elitist snobs who use this as an excuse to mingle together to reinforce with themselves how much better they think they are from the rest of us unwashed masses. No wonder the DC bubble keeps these people completely out of touch with real America.

(b) surely realizes that the officers around her would be gravely and rightly offended at being treated like gophers for some overrated Obama Chicago crony.

Why would she realize that? She’s got all kinds of people waiting on her. What do the servers on AF1 wear?

Nancy Pelosi used the Air Force as her personal catering service for 2 years. Why wouldn’t Jarrett use one guy to get her a drink ?

Rumor is that Jarrett is actually the POTUS right now, so she must just think she’s Queen and that the military is there to serve her. Makes sense in her universe.

Feeling snubbed by administration, military views Clinton with growing distrust

Finally, there is the issue of respect. It is one thing when the president salutes casually and incorrectly. Much more serious are the prevalent rumors in the military community of outright rudeness by the White House staff. One example, confirmed by a close friend of Lt. Gen. Barry McCaffrey, is particularly disturbing.

General McCaffrey is the special assistant to Gen. Colin L. Powell, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is also the only active-duty military man who has been awarded two Distinguished Service Cross medals. He served several tours in Vietnam and was the division commander on the land assaults in Iraq during the Persian Gulf war.

Recently, a well-placed source said, General McCaffrey was in the White House for meetings when he was told by a White House aide, “We really don’t want people in uniform over here, unless it’s absolutely necessary.”

Back in the Clinton administration, one of the security guys stationed at the white house wrote a book about how badly the clintons ran that white house. I forgot if this guy was an FBI guy or secret service. It was one of the best reads of that administration. One of the reasons most of that staff didn’t fill out their security clearance applications is because they would not pass the scrutiny (drug use in college, etc). Someone here probably remembers that book and who that guy is. In his book, he said that hillary routinely expected the marines to wait on party guests. It was pretty bad.

karenhasfreedom on February 1, 2011 at 5:56 PM

I’m thinking he was retired FBI. Yeah, can’t think of the name of the book but I read it.
I remember reading how Hillary hated the military. She never wanted them in the same room she was in.
Something else I remember from that book, the first Christmas of the Clintons, they put of this Christmas tree in the WH and the author and Hillary were there to check it out, she thought the tree was wonderful. He was shocked.
It was decorated with dildos and condoms as Christmas ornaments.

JellyToast on February 1, 2011 at 6:04 PM

Gary Aldrich. “Unlimited Access”.

He also had an anecdote in that book about how Chelsea Clinton referred to the Secret Service agents as trained pigs. When she was questioned about the propriety of her statement, she replied that her parents called them the same thing.

I’m reminded of a joke.

A U.S. Marine was on a plane, he got the aisle seat and next to arabs. The Marine kicked off his shoes after they were airborne, and one of the arabs was trying to hail a stewardress to get a drink. The Marine said “what do you want, I’ll get it for you”. So the arab asked for a coke, and the Marine got up and walked away. The arab then grabbed one of the Marine’s shoes and spat in it. The Marine returned with the coke and sat down. 20 minutes later the second arab also asked for a coke and the Marine got and went down the aisle for it. The second arab grabbed the Marine’s other shoe and spat in it. The Marine returned with the coke and sat down for the rest of the flight.

After landing the Marine slipped on his shoes and just shook his head. He turned to the arabs and said “when are we going to stop this foolishness, spitting in shoes and pi$$ing in cokes”.

Daemonocracy on February 1, 2011 at 8:23 PM

Help me figure this out. She’s sitting there at a table with military men, all of whom doubtless were fully adorned with decorations. Which means she (a) knows the military is there and in uniform …

Okay Allah – here’s where your lack of exposure to the military hurts you.

This was an evening gown affair – which means the officers would have been in DINNER DRESS. Dinner dress is the closest thing the services have to a tuxedo.

For each service – the Dinner Dress is different. Most radically – the Navy’s Dinner Dress. If the uniform “called” for the evening was Dinner Dress White Jacket – then the Naval Officers would have been wearing a short white butler’s jacket – with black pants.

Medals? All medals worn on dinner dress are MINIATURE medals – not as easy to see as the large medals. And besides – if the guy was facing in the other direction when she called him in the first place – she would not have seen the medals (large or small).

You should really not try to fill in the logical holes with your own imagination when you hear these stories. It could have happened – and then again – maybe not.

What’s the standard for journalism? Two? Three independent sources? No need to deviate from that here.

Doesn’t matter anyway, it was the Bush’s job to call them off, not the Secret Service’s. It shows a lack of respect and consideration as I see it–plain bad manners.

Kind of reminds me of a scene from Air America where a dim-witted American Congressman, coming off a plane, handed his bags to the Laotian General, thinking he was a porter.

At least Jarret did not (with a slurred speech) tell the guy
Island of Guam could tip over ……

It’s this kind of thing which makes me sure that there’s not enough pay check or pension on the planet that would get me to take a job fawning over, or protecting any big shot in DC. And, if you look at Jarrett’s job critically, she is being paid to do exactly this, worship at the Presidential throne. So is Axelrod and all the others. Those who don’t get canned.I’d rather be a self determining nobody, thanks.

Well, I worked at the White House when Clinton was inaugurated.

The Clinton administration attempted to BAN military uniforms on the “Eighteen Acres” (the White House Grounds). We only wore uniforms once a week – on Wednesdays … and this policy really ticked off all of in the Military Office. The White House rescinded that policy – and instead instituted a petty “ban” on all military headgear (hats) while wearing a uniform on the eighteen acres.

A story also came out that Clinton attempted to have military personnel “wait” on guests at a party. I heard this report through the press though – I don’t have first hand knowledge of that one.

Your right its the masters job to make them behave but lacking that the body guards could have made the dogs understand their place without kicking and perhaps without touching.
