Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on February 1, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

During his State of the Union speech, Barack Obama warned Republicans about the futility of living in the past. When addressing the subject of ObamaCare, the President scolded Republicans who won a House majority on the promise of undoing his signature work:

So instead of re-fighting the battles of the last two years, let’s fix what needs fixing and move forward.

Is this the same man who spent the last two years beating this analogy to death?

I want you to think about it this way. Imagine that these folks drove a car into the ditch. And it was a really deep ditch. And somehow they were able to walk away from the accident, but they did nothing to get the car out of the ditch. And so, me and Barbara and Jerry and Antonio, we all put on our boots and we climbed down into the ditch.

And it’s hot down there. Flies are down there — (laughter) — and we’re sweating. But we’re pushing, we’re pushing to get the car out of the ditch. And even though Barbara Boxer is small, she is pushing, too. And we’re all pushing. (Applause.) And as we’re pushing, we look up and the Republicans are all standing there at the top of the ditch. They’re all looking down. And we say, why don’t you come down and help? And they say, no, that’s all right. And then they kick some dirt down into the ditch. (Laughter.) They’re sipping on a Slurpee. They’re fanning themselves. You’re not pushing hard enough, they say. You’re not pushing the right way.

That quote comes from late October, almost two years to the day that Obama won his presidential election. He’s been refighting that same battle ever since — and despite his insistence that the car is out of the ditch, it still looks pretty stuck to those looking for jobs or trying to sell their homes.

Now that the election is over and Obama lost, he suddenly wants to live in the moment. Too bad courts in Virginia and Florida don’t agree.  Maybe he should think of it this way: Congress and Obama drove the Constitution into a ditch, and Republicans have been trying to pull it out ever since …

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Look for Obama’s numbers to go up again as Republicans render him more (seemingly) harmless.

Hate to break it to ya, Giggles, but it went kind of like this:

* Democrats (you know… the ones who took Congress over after the 2006 election) grabbed the steering wheel from the Republicans (who weren’t all that great at driving, admittedly), and swerved the car towards that ditch.

* After driving the car into the ditch, instead of getting out, you and the rest of your buddies floored the accelerator, effectively digging the car deeper into the ditch.

* When the Republicans said “Um… you may want to stop that and put it in reverse” you said, “I won. We’re driving. Get in the back seat.”

That’s what happened, d-bag.

“Obama and all the Democrats did a terrible job of explaining this bill”……Governor Rendell.

It all started with the title of the bill—The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act—which neither protects the patient nor is affordable.

Clearly the law is unconstitutional, but don’t tell that to folks who have begun to read the bill, right Nancy?

The federal judge’s ruling included the clarification that it serves as a de facto injunction and a separate injunction is redundant. Will boy-king honor that federal judge’s ruling? Hint: They already said they are moving ahead and this ruling won’t stop them. Rule of law, my a$$.

For me, the moment I will never forget is when Nancy Pelosi looked the camera right in the eye and told the American people the bill would have to pass before we could find out what was in it…

That statement alone tells me everything I ever needed to know about this version of the Democrat Party. We tell you what/how/when things are going to be right after we make it law.

That’s simply not how freedom works here in America; not now, and not ever…

mjbrooks3 on February 1, 2011 at 8:54 AM

“..living in the past” Is that what Obama thinks he’s been trying to do these last 2 years, launch us into the future? Nothing much wrong with that, but it has to go slowly, very, very slowly and most of the American people have to be comfortable with it. Neither of these crtieria apply in Obama’s mis-guided efforts. His father knows best routine is offensive and borders on dictatorial.

I hope you are correct but after the Kelso decision on imminent domain and the Chrysler decision on bond holder rights I not sure about the Supreme Court protecting our freedoms from the Government.

chemman on February 1, 2011 at 9:18 AM

We can’t put all our faith in the supremes killing this monster. We still need attacks on all fronts. Effectively this bill is dead, however, the states will still have to plan and budget for it since this ruling could be overturned. This is budget money that could be allocated for needed projects locally. What a waste.

Obama’s just one more dull tool in the shed.
