Coming soon to Fox News …?
posted at 3:35 pm on January 27, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
Ever since Keith Olbermann and MSNBC parted company last week, speculation has continued about whether Fox News might give a show to the former Countdown host as a sort of coup against its media critics who charge Fox with being too ideologically homogeneous. It seems as though people haven’t credited Fox News chief Roger Ailes for having a grander vision. According to an interview with Esquire, Ailes has offered at least a one-time special to a liberal icon — one with significantly higher stature than an MSNBC host (via the Daily Caller and Weekly Political Review):
On Liberal Voices at Fox
Tell me who you want to see on the left and I’ll hire them. If you give me a big name that’s out there, that’s floating around and wants work, I’d be happy to hire them. We have Ed Rendell, I mean he was the head of the Democratic party. He’s on twice a week. You can’t get any bigger than that. I go for people who will get ratings, but I’d be happy to put a bigger name Democrat on if you’ve got one. Now that probably surprises you and won’t get into the story, but it’s true. I want people who have marquee value.
On Bill Clinton, Talk-Show Host
Well, I talked to him. The problem with Bill is he won’t be as good on a talk show as you’d think. Because, first of all, he never shuts up. I mean he cannot hit time cues. But I went up to Harlem, I met with him for an hour, an hour and a half, I asked him to do a special, which he’s still thinking about. I’d like to have it; I’d like to have him do a special for us. The problem with him in a talk-show mode is not that he’s not charming, good, smart, and glib. He is. But he loves to talk about policy. He’s actually a policy wonk. So if you really want eighteen minutes on ethanol, he’ll give it to you. But it won’t get ratings. So you have to be able to produce him and say, “Most people are not that interested in ethanol, Mr. President. What we’d like you to talk about is this.” And if he would stick with current affairs and stick with the clock, he’d be one of the great talk-show people in the world.
What a shock! Roger Ailes turns out to be a businessman. Give him an idea that will drive ratings and ad sales, and he’ll put it into action. But to do that, the proposed show has to have “marquee value,” and that’s something that may be missing from Olbermann. He had the highest-rated show on MSNBC, but that’s a bit like having the highest batting average in AAA ball.
Speaking of MSNBC, Ailes gets in a dig at their new slogan:
I stuck it to them with “Move Forward.” That really irritates the shit out of them. They paid Spike Lee $3 million for “Lean”? What kind of word is that? Who wants to lean? Good Lord. Isn’t that their problem — that they’re leaning?
But Bill Clinton would mean big ratings, at least for specials, if for no other reason than the sheer novelty. What other American President has hosted a TV talk show? For that matter, what other American President would consider hosting a TV talk show? Unlike Olbermann, most Americans like Clinton and would at least be inclined to give him a chance, perhaps especially those viewers who aren’t already watching Fox. The problem, as Ailes notes, would be to get Clinton to shut up to hit his timing marks so that Fox can actually sell the ads. If you think that would be easy, just recall what happened when Clinton appeared as a guest at Barack Obama’s press conference in December.
The key here might be to pair Clinton with someone more experienced in television and/or radio. How about a Rush Limbaugh/Bill Clinton duo? Take that, Parker/Spitzer!
Would you watch a Bill Clinton show on Fox News? Take the poll:

Slick Willy and Dennis Miller..now THAT i’ PAY to watch once a week.
Give em both a 5 minute rant, another 5 to debate a topic, and wrap up the half hour with both taking pot shots at The One.
Could. Not. Miss.

I would watch but here is the problem – Bill Clinton defies the law of having two ears and one mouth.
Host a talk show? He wants to talk – not listen.
It’s his nature do all the talking and none of the listening.

I mean, how could they criticize their first black president for selling out.

Oh, and no way would I watch Clinton – for any reason.
The only thing which does bring chuckles is the fact he’d be doing this on FOX. Just the thought of all the libtard head ‘splodin – delicious.
catmman on January 27, 2011 at 4:53 PM
Not dismissing it, alot of people feel that way, but most of them are Libs. Fox News has just enough major libs on it to make me disagree that it is Conservative, ie: Shep, Geraldo, Kirsten Powers (gag!), Colmes etc.. I just believe that if anything, Fox fights the “Conservative” label, because it gives credence to the rants of the “Left” that they exist only as a Republican mouthpiece.
I’m glad you are a Conservative, too many trolls on HA these days!
BTW, who is JD?
Susanboo on January 27, 2011 at 4:54 PM
Democrats lost big in 2010 on the state level, so now they are resorting to theatrics, temper tantrums, shouting and throwing things to obstruct Republicans during a PA State House Rules Committee.

I dunno if he had Megyn Kelly on one side and Julie Banderas on the other side to make sure he hit his time marks, I’d watch.
It would be a ratings bonanza and all the libs who turned in to see their hero would get an education.
Lily on January 27, 2011 at 4:58 PM
He’d be terrible. To be a good talk show host, you have to be interested in other people, what they’ve done, what they think, what they know. Nothing this man ever did indicates that he has the least bit of concern or curiosity about any one else.

I know I’d like to see at least 2 shows where he sucks so bad, someone throws a bell jar over him.

GarandFan on January 27, 2011 at 5:45 PM
Interesting. I just don’t know where he’d fit in on FOX. He wouldn’t do well on a panel, he’d be boring on his own, he has too big an ego to co-host a show. What does that leave? I don’t think I’d watch unless he was on a panel where he could throw in his two cents along with some other experts. I certainly couldn’t watch an hour of Bill Clinton by himself. Besides, he’s a finger wagger.

slickwillie2001 on January 27, 2011 at 7:11 PM
It would be funny for Fox to be able to brag about having Clinton host a show.
It would also be funny if Clinton’s show was canceled because of low ratings.

Fox should be careful, at this rate they’ll be left leaning after a couple more hirings. Then we are screwed. Maybe they think our trust in Fox is permanent. We won’t see that we’re being indoctrinated to 1.) accept and agree with the left, 2) eventually we will think like the left. Well, I will turn off TV first. And it is not because I don’t understand the left’s positions, it’s because I love our constitution and our freedoms. I like to think for myself. Sorry for the rant.
conmo on January 27, 2011 at 9:22 PM
We need a conservative TV network, the equivalent on the right, of MSNBC. One that doesn’t attempt to be ‘fair and balanced’, but unashamedly right.
slickwillie2001 on January 27, 2011 at 9:38 PM
I’m a big fan of Slick. He is probably the most engaging fiend in DC. He can be two hours late to a scheduled event and people still stand and cheer when he walks in the room. I am a rock solid conservative, I can tell ya’. He doesn’t need a teleprompter, he doesn’t need hand written notes. He only needs a mic and a stage. He is like your favorite uncle who is so full of crap but you still love him.
tom0508 on January 27, 2011 at 9:38 PM
If you want to talk to Bill Clinton all you need is a microphone in your hand and he’ll find you.
mixplix on January 27, 2011 at 9:52 PM
Just what we need – another healthy dose of liberal excrement shoved down our throats. I would be willing to bet that a lot of people watch Fox because they can get liberal talking points on any other news program. (I know, I’m a genius at pointing out the obvious).
What’s the point of making Fox into MSNBC lite? Ratings? I don’t see any ratings boom unless Slick Willie does a realty show involving State Troopers, lonely out of the way hotels, and chubby 20 something women. The freak show genre seems to rake in the cash.
Or they could just follow him with a camera team as goes through his everyday life chasing women. They could call it “Cankle Watch” and hype it by having Billy Jeff pretend to be constantly worried about getting caught by the missus. They could cut in clips of HRC pretending to care.

I blame Jimmuh Cahtah for this monstrosity. Presidents need to fade into the background like Harry Truman did. They did it for almost two centuries. They served and left without anymore comment. Carter was to first President to criticize a sitting President(as far as I’m aware), and the office has been cheapened to nothing more than a Progressive joke. Now add Bubba as a game show host and you’ve got the complete picture….
adamsmith on January 28, 2011 at 12:43 AM
My bet is conservatives would just shrug off Fox giving Clinton a soapbox while leftists would make a highly entertaining spectacle of themselves by erupting in mouth-foaming rage at Clinton for ‘selling out’ to the Network of Evil.
Besides, Clinton doesn’t seem so bad after two years of genuine, Berkeley-style leftists running the country and mouthing off on MSNBC.
kd6rxl on January 28, 2011 at 2:21 AM
Clinton with Limbaugh would be explosive for ratings. Rush could easily get them to the marker and the in’s and out’s would be unreal. Do this 3 – 4 times a year and Fox can name its ad price.

The point of the generous pensions presidents get is so they won’t have to do things like this for money.
Even if he gave whatever money he might be paid to charity (Planned Parenthood?), it would demean the office of POTUS. Ok, Clinton has already done that on his own pretty much, but still.
Akzed on January 28, 2011 at 9:41 AM
I would watch a special with Bill Clinton, I’m not sure about a regular show. I also think that Rush as a co-host on said special would be fabulous. I would seriously like to hear his take on the hypocrisy (and yes I know our side is not snow white either) the lies and hatred that the left shows to anyone not behind them 100%, including independents and conservative (a slight oxymoron, but true never the less)democrats. Perhaps he can shed some light on why the current administration is flipping us all the bird and a big STFU while steam rolling over the Constitution and other little pesky documents and rules that give the fed govt limited powers. Or why spending more money will cure the deficit – wink wink. Or why it’s constitutional to mandate a product and then threaten fines and jail if you fail to comply. Or why it’s ok to let foreign countries drill for oil in our proximity but put a moratorium on US companies. There’s a wealth of issues that I’d like to hear him comment on.
I was never a fan of his when he was President (he is a democrat after all!) but I have found myself listening to him occasionally since then. In fact, I have found myself wishing that if a Democratic President has to be in office, I’d rather have him back than the current impostor.

They make much more money on the side than their pensions. I believe only two presidents continued public service. John Quincy Adams went back to serve in the House of Representatives and William Taft went on to serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court………….. Then you have Jimmy, I can’t shut my mouth, Carter. Surely, some news person is trying to get him on camera about this event.
SC.Charlie on January 28, 2011 at 4:17 PM
Bill looks like a right winger compared to who sits behind the desk in the Oval Office today. He would have a great show.
Wade on January 28, 2011 at 5:12 PM
A good talk show host is able to show respect to his guests, and to engage them in conversation which draws them out and makes them interesting.
Bill would totally flunk this assignment: he wouldn’t care about any guest, and it would show.
A talk show with Clinton as host would be “one and done” on any network.
