Quotes of the day

posted at 10:52 pm on January 25, 2011 by Allahpundit

“House conservatives say they will pursue legislation that would ban gay marriage in the nation’s capital.

“Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee (RSC), told The Hill that he will push for a vote on the controversial issue in the 112th Congress. The RSC has 175 members.

“‘I think RSC will push for it, and I’m certainly strongly for it. I don’t know if we’ve made a decision if I’ll do it or let another member do it, but I’m 100 percent for it,’ Jordan said.”

***
“On Dec. 15, the Log Cabin Republicans (LCR) and other conservative groups met with Rep. Jim Jordan, chair of the conservative Republican Study Committee (RSC), and learned that the group’s focus in 2011 was going to be on fiscal issues. R. Clarke Cooper, LCR’s executive director, walked away from that meeting reassured that the GOP wouldn’t be going after LGBT rights when they took control of the House…

“Cooper said that he was ‘very disappointed’ by [today's] announcement. ‘From our perspective, not only is it an attack on states’ rights, but it goes in direct violation to the DC Human Rights Act,’ he added…

“Asked for clarification, Jordan’s Press Secretary Meghan Snyder said that the congressman’s top priorities are still creating jobs and reducing government spending. However, she added, he also ‘believes that, in addition to addressing our country’s fiscal issues, advocating for low taxes, less spending and a strong national defense, conservatives must advocate for traditional family values like life and marriage. Family is the cornerstone upon which our communities, our states and our nation is built, and conservatives must lead the way in promoting the strengths of the traditional family whenever we can.’”

***
“Log Cabin Republicans deputy executive director Christian Berle told The Advocate that his organization has not yet spoken with Jordan’s staff or any other member of Congress on the potential legislation. Log Cabin issued the following statement Tuesday:

“‘Last November the American people made their priorities perfectly clear,’ Log Cabin Republicans executive director R. Clarke Cooper said. ‘The primary mission of this Congress is to address trillions of dollars in deficits and out of control government spending, which will not happen if individual members take their eyes off the ball to manufacture controversy. Just two months ago, Congressman Jordan said to me ‘Democrats are the party of government; we are the party of principle.’ Today I am calling upon him to remember the core Republican principle that respects local government and states’ rights over interference from federal lawmakers.

“‘This Congress has important work to do without meddling in local affairs,’ Cooper continued. ‘Such an overreach sends a mixed message from a Republican party actively trying to shrink the role of government in Americans’ daily lives.’”

It’s called ‘back up your gutter-speak with something besides your toothless mouth’.

as I said before you’re all talk. people who make threats on the internet are gutless punks…as you have proven.

And if you weren’t banned the moment you revealed yourself to be a theological crapweasel, I KNOW I’m safe. If you managed to light yourself on fire, I doubt even the other hard-wingers on HA would do anything but get the marshmallows.

I have only read a few of the comments here because as usual they are totally off point. As to this proposal I think it’s great and should go forward. Jordan and the FSC will not be pushing for a law banning “gay marriage” in DC. They will push for a law which allows the people of DC to vote on the matter. Something they are entitled to and was denied to them by both their local government and the courts. Why? Because it will pass easily. I don’t think Obama will actually back the bill but he will surely sign it. He doesn’t want to turn off his AA base who overwhelmingly reject changing the definition of marriage.

Sodomists oppress themselves without help from others. What with all the VD they swap, the high suicide rate, the short life-expectancy and so on that they wantonly bring on themselves.

If they’d only stop all that self-oppression they’d by much happier, and not have to wonder if someone didn’t hire them because of their little rainbow lapel pins.

I don’t see how not wanting to associate with sex perverts oppresses them. If one of them really really want to associate with me to the point of feeling oppressed by my inattention, that should be more worrisome for me than for him. Don’t you think?

Akzed on January 26, 2011 at 10:51 AM

Let Jordan and the social conservative Republicans push for a vote by the people of DC to ban gay marriage. It will certainly please people like Akzed, who considers gays to be perverts, and right4life, who thinks that gays are fascists.

Regretfully, it will be a losing issue for the Republican Party as a whole.

Well, you know I am one of those ‘fiscal con jobs’ in the thuggish gay rights crowd. In fact, in terms of some areas of social policy, I be among the most extreme in opposition to what social cons want. Yet, I have been called “homophobic” by other people in the “thuggish gay rights crowd”, because I oppose hate crime legislation, think bisexual rights makes no more sense than unicorn rights, and think transgender individuals deserve no more rights than the rights of individuals with ugly tattoos.

So, I am simultaneously in the thuggish gay rights crown and homophobic. I think the problem is that we label each other as the enemy too quickly. Why can’t we get along?

thuja on January 26, 2011 at 11:13 AM

It isn’t possible for a Demcrat to lose his college base. He will hem amd haw. Twitch and twitter and then sign the bill. Local AA pols are never in a close election as long as vote to keep the gravy train running so being for it doesn’t really hurt them. Obama will have a close election. I don’t really think AAs would abandon Obama in real numbers but some might stay home. 1-2% drop in the AA vote for a local poll is nothing because they get 90% of the vote and it’s the majority anyway. That isn’t true statewide or national. A lower turnout of AAs in a close elction would hurt Obama.

Once there’s no normal, perversion just might lose its appeal.

It has nothing to do with it. “Gay marriage” has nothing to do with rights. If you are going to decide basic issues like when life begins or what marriage is, which have been clearly defined forever, only an idiot of a politician would want to take it on themselves. Let the people vote and then you can say clearly where things stand.

However, I think that the 1.5 billion deficit this year and fiscal irresponsibility by political entities is something that will bring down this nation.

SC.Charlie on January 26, 2011 at 7:03 PM

Footnote, off topic: Last year in the Spring I had to go to Federal Tax Court to testify on a case on a minor issue. I was testifying for the Federal Government. It was the first time that I have ever had to testify in Federal Court. Now at the end of the January the case has yet to be decided by the judge. Our system of income taxation is deeply flawed.

SC.Charlie on January 26, 2011 at 7:08 PM

It has nothing to do with religion, and everything to do with what marriage is and always has been.

Translation: It has EVERYTHING to do with religion.

Translation:You’re sticking to your claim even when corrected.

Your pseudo-point ignores the true political reality: it is the government that specifically would instruct all other institutions of society that “partnerships” between two men or two women are in fact marriages. The only way we will ever have same-sex “marriage” is if the government acts to change the definition of marriage.
There Goes The Neighborhood on January 26, 2011 at 1:59 AM

Having these romantic notions about “traditional” marriage is laughable at best, given how much of a dismal failure most “traditional” marriages are in the modern day.

Pointing out the actual history of marriage from the time the human race began is a “romantic notion” of marriage?

And traditional marriages needs to be put in scare quotes?

And most traditional marriages are dismal failures?

Did you just take a wrong turn and wander into a conservative blog by accident?

And your uproar about the government “forcing” other institutions to accept its definition of marriage……marriage is a legally binding contract. Contracts are part of the legal system. The legal system? Very much in the purview of the government; NOT in the purview of the church. So yes, the government DOES get to decide the definition of marriage, insofar as it retains it’s contractual status.

Vyce on January 26, 2011 at 7:44 AM

Marriage is not a contract. You can draw similarities, but contracts can include any arrangement the parties find satisfactory, and any number of parties. But because you can try to argue that marriage can be treated like a special case type of contract, you try to turn it around and proclaim that it’s nothing but a contract.

Now, you can have any opinion you want, however wrong. But don’t try to claim that you represent a conservative viewpoint when you’re perfectly willing to throw out the single most important social institution in our nation, and in our culture, absolutely bar none, because you want it to include two men or two women instead.

Many communists are more conservative than you are.

There Goes The Neighborhood on January 27, 2011 at 12:29 AM

Akzed, I guess you don’t believe that being conservative and gay rights is possible.

Way too vague. But pushing for the government to unilaterally change the definition of marriage is the epitome of radical and anti-conservative belief.

I would suggest that you argue that with Mr. Conservative himself…………..Barry Goldwater. However, I think that the 1.5 billion deficit this year and fiscal irresponsibility by political entities is something that will bring down this nation.

SC.Charlie on January 26, 2011 at 7:03 PM

Goldwater was more libertarian than conservative. Not a good example. It would certainly be absurd to call him “Mr. Conservative.”
