Quotes of the day

posted at 10:48 pm on January 20, 2011 by Allahpundit

“Gabrielle Giffords on Thursday felt the sunshine on her face for the first time since she was shot, as doctors prepared her to leave behind the Arizona hospital where she dazzled them with her rapid recovery.

“Her next stop will be a Houston rehab center, where she will face an even more arduous task: Getting life back to normal

“Late Thursday, trauma surgeon, Dr. Peter Rhee, said staff at University Medical Center in Tucson helped Giffords stand and get into a wheelchair. They then took her to a deck at the hospital, where she breathed in the fresh air and felt the sun.

“‘I saw the biggest smile she could gather,’ Rhee said, noting that Giffords loves the outdoors.”

“Despite the use of terms like ‘miraculous’ to describe Giffords’s progress, numerous experts describe her survival and apparently good condition as an increasingly common outcome in brain-injured patients, thanks to aggressive surgery and meticulous care afterward.

“The ability of the brain to compensate for damage by at least partly rewiring itself and assigning new tasks to undamaged regions is known as ‘neuroplasticity.’ It’s one of the hottest topics in biology and an important one in medicine.

“Because of insights from functional magnetic resonance imaging and other technologies, scientists now realize that brain reorganization after injury is far more common and extensive than previously thought. They also know that neuroplasticity depends to a great degree on experience – which is to say, what the brain is forced to do in the critical weeks and months after it is injured.

“‘There is a relationship between the amount of therapy you receive and the degree of recovery,’ said Maurizio Corbetta, a neurologist who runs a brain injury unit at the Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis at Washington University. ‘This is particularly true in the first three to six months when the brain is reorganizing.’”

***
“Pelosi said she believed that Giffords, the victim of an assassination attempt on Jan. 8, would one day return to her seat in the House.

‘Yes, I think so,’ Pelosi said on CNN’s ‘The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer’ when asked if she thought Giffords would return to Congress.”

Hopefully, people will start to focus on the miraculous recovery, and the world-class medical treatment, and leave the vitriol behind.

carbon_footprint on January 20, 2011 at 10:52 PM

Pretty amazing. And, I know I shouldn’t ask, but….

what does she look like now? she had a bullet go through her skull. has she had any plastic surgery? can you do skin graft things?

just curious, i’m not really medical.

also, i think obama will use her to his greatest political advantage, having her stand up in the podium during his state of the union or something. funny how when she was a semi-blue dog he didn’t care for her…. now things have changed!

If she says that she has learned stuff that can not be taught and one needs to cast off all hatred as she has and be stronger. Or if she has a speech that would make satan blush in the hatred and with her orders every right thinking person is rounded up done away with and elevating her to divine like status.

I have to admit, this is interesting:

Pressure was mounting on Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie today amid increasing confusion over whether President Obama was born there.

Abercrombie said on Tuesday that an investigation had unearthed papers proving Obama was born in Hawaii in 1961.

He told Honolulu’s Star-Advertiser: ‘It actually exists in the archives, written down,’ he said.

But it became apparent that what had been discovered was an unspecified listing or notation of Obama’s birth that someone had made in the state archives and not a birth certificate.

And in the same interview Abercrombie suggested that a long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate for Barack Obama may not exist within the vital records maintained by the Hawaii Department of Health.

He said efforts were still being made to track down definitive vital records that would prove Obama was born in Hawaii.

Abercrombie was asked: ‘You stirred up quite a controversy with your comments regarding birthers and your plan to release more information regarding President Barack Obama’s birth certificate. How is that coming?’

He acknowledged the birth certificate issue would have ‘political implications’ for the next presidential election ‘that we simply cannot have’.

OK, I am delighted that she is well enough to enter the next phase of her care and that she appears able to make the trip to Houston. This is a serious question for the medical folks here.

What about her skull part that they took out? How do they keep it preserved while she has that part out of her head? I presume it is going in the plane with her? How long can they keep that out of her head before there are problems trying to get it back into her head? Does it heal back into one piece once they put it back in? Is her brain still swollen? How does this stuff work?

My sister is the doctor in the family, I have the engineering background, so I really don’t have any experience or exposure to these kinds of wounds but I am really curious about how they are going to put her back into one piece again.

Don’t get me wrong here, I am very pleased she is doing so well and am furious she was shot in the first place, along with the other folks. I feel extra horrible for those family members of the ones who were killed.

It would be interesting to know if Gabrielle goes back to Congress, if her views will change on Obamacare because she has to know that the kind of care she will be receiving will NOT be available to the average joe/jane if we don’t get this thing repealed.

karenhasfreedom on January 21, 2011 at 2:33 AM

MadisonConservative, I think the reason that Abercrombie, and after all his bravado, can’t find a Hawaiian Birth Certificate for Obama is probably for the very same reason that he would not be able to find a Hawaiian Birth Certificate there for you and me.

Welfare Tab for Children of Illegal Immigrants Estimated at $600M in L.A. County
*********************

Welfare benefits for the children of illegal immigrants cost America’s largest county more than $600 million last year, according to a local official keeping tabs on the cost.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich released new statistics this week showing social spending for those families in his county rose to $53 million in November, putting the county government on track to spend more than $600 million on related costs for the year — up from $570 million in 2009.

Antonovich arrived at the estimate by factoring in the cost of food stamps and welfare-style benefits through a state program known as CalWORKS. Combined with public safety costs and health care costs, the official claimed the “total cost for illegal immigrants to county taxpayers” was more than $1.6 billion in 2010.

“Not including the hundreds of millions of dollars for education,” he said in a statement.

And according to the key players, almost everything did.

If the surgeons completely removed part of Giffords’ skull, one option would be to implant the fragment just under the skin of a leg to keep blood flowing to it. I have not read any report of what was or what wasn’t done so another option would be to peel back part of the skull for surgery, re-attach the skull and put in a drain hose to drain the skull of fluids…

Dr. Jennifer Ashton: Bullet’s Angle Was Crucial

The bullet’s path once it entered Giffords’ brain was also key, Ashton pointed out, noting, “The bullet went through the rear left portion of the brain, and exited through the front left portion of the brain. … Critical structures, which tend to be located deeper and more centrally in the brain, were miraculously spared, as were some major blood vessels that also are in the midline, and the bullet did not cross from the left to the right side of the brain – also very important.”

Thanx…If that is the case, Giffords could recover almost totally…Her right side, governed by the left side of her brain, would be the point of emphasis during rehab — hand eye coordination, fine finger movements, writing, etc…

I shudder to think what Obamacare would have done. Kini on January 20, 2011 at 11:03 PM

She’s a member of congress…not applicable.

BigWyo on January 21, 2011 at 8:51 AM

I have such high hopes for her. She’s got the personal strength and support system to hopefully regain most of her function back. She could become a terrific advocate for the brain injured, the same kind of public service she’s always done.

Isn’t the Anti-Christ supposed to make a miraculous recovery from a head wound?

Ok, sorry. It’s late and I am a little impaired….

During the Vietnam War, a Marine helicopter crewman ( I believe it was a pilot) took a 51 caliber machine gun bullet between the eyes. The only lasting effect was that he is blind in one eye.

Nope, not a birther. Just find it interesting.

I read that she has to wear some sort of helmet to protect her head where the skull has been removed, during her rehab period. I also read where they can keep that part out of her head for 2 or 3 months. I just was wondering if the brain is swollen that long, and if the parts all fit back together when they put it back in, or do they have to put in some stuff to create a seal around the piece and the rest of her skull, similar to grout around tile. I just don’t know what happens to bones in the skull when a piece is missing that long. I think that would feel so weird. However, I am sure much of how she is feeling is weird for her anyway. This was quite a traumatic injury. I just feel so horrible anyone has to endure this, but I am curious how it all works. These doctors are miracle workers. In a way, the brain trauma developments have really progressed as they have helped our soldiers recover, so there has been an upside to the downside of the overall casualties of our wars. I think that newsperson who was injured so severely recovered pretty well because of the advancements, as well as so many of our soldiers. In a way, Giffords is a casualty of service to our country, even though it was a domestic nutball who caused her injury. I hope he fries, although he probably faces a future of death by injection. He will get the easy way out. What scum, what evil.

I hope she makes a full recovery and quickly too.

dogsoldier on January 21, 2011 at 10:36 AM

You mean, deny her world class care because resources were limited?

massrighty on January 20, 2011 at 11:06 PM

Not gonna happen. Remember, under ObamaCare the rich and powerful will receive the care they need, it is the rest of the people that will be restricted.
That said I am very glad that Giffords is doing so well. I just think that the type of care she has received should be available to everyone, and ObamaCare will eventually prevent that if it is remains the law.

I pray that by the grace of God and the help of modern medicine, she may recover completely!

If she can recover the ability to speak, she will probably have profound things to say.

God’s speed.

I agree with you 99.5%. She absolutely is a liberal in blue dog clothing. The only thing I disagree on is the she is not my representative. I live in AZ-8, but she doesn’t represent me. Never has.

You mean, make a cost-conscious quality of life decision without involving those who love her?

You mean, advise her that the blue pill might be her best option?

You mean, deny her world class care because resources were limited?
