Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on January 20, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

President Barack Obama threw a lavish state dinner for Chinese premiere Hu Jintao last night. For the right perspective on just how objectionable this particular decision was, I’ll turn to my Twitter reader Lash3, who retweeted a succinct diagnosis of the issue:

RT @JTS_1957 RT @pcam: 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner holds State Dinner for man who has 2010 winner under House Arrest.

ABC’s Jake Tapper also took to Twitter twice to note that the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner — Obama — hadn’t said a word about his successor to the successor’s jailer:

Liu Xiaobo Liu Xiaobo Liu Xiaobo Liu Xiaobo Liu Xiaobo Liu Xiaobo Liu Xiaobo Liu Xiaobo Liu Xiaobo Liu Xiaobo Liu Xiaobo Liu Xiaobo

i mention Liu Xiaobo because NO ONE has mentioned his name at any of these events

What message did the Nobel Prize winner deliver to his guest?  Andrew Malcolm highlights the key message:

We also think that China’s rise offers enormous economic opportunity. We want to sell you all kinds of stuff. (Laughter.)  We want to sell you planes. We want to sell you cars. We want to sell you software.

And as Allahpundit noted last night, Jay Nordlinger explains that none of it was necessary anyway:

The demands of “realpolitik” do not include a “lavish state banquet,” to borrow the AP’s words. George W. Bush did not bow to the Chinese Communists in this way. (Remember, Obama has literally bowed to the Chinese.) He gave them a lunch. Sino-American relations proceeded normally in his eight years.

Let me get a little corny on you: America is a nation that’s supposed to stand for something — for freedom, and human dignity, above all. We’re not supposed to be like every other nation. We’re supposed to be exceptional. Different. A beacon unto man.

I’m not a babe in the woods, and I understand the necessity of getting along in a wicked world. But we don’t have to abase ourselves as we are doing now. We should not be honoring the PRC boss. We should be honoring, and standing with, the men and women in the camps and the cells. Are we America? (Does this sort of talk make you gag?) What is America? What are we supposed to celebrate on the Fourth of July? Is it just an excuse for fireworks and a picnic?

For some, apparently yes, just as Nobel Peace Prizes are opportunities for self-aggrandizement.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

We’re not supposed to be like every other nation. We’re supposed to be exceptional. Different. A beacon unto man.

Nordlinger didn’t watch the presidential debates in 2008? Barry doesn’t believe in American exceptionalism. The entire concept is raaaaaacist and nativist.

Barry’s an urbane, sophisticated, Ivy-league-educated, uber-enlightened “citizen of the world” — not some silly, provincial hick with a state-college education who thinks the U.S. is something special.

It’s easy to understand Obama’s behavior when you remember to Blame America First. If only we weren’t imperialist, racist, or just plain wrong, then other nations wouldn’t behave badly. If we simply bow down to them, placate and appease them, then and only then can we acheive world peace and all that good stuff.

However, only one or two copies. You will then pirate it to fill your needs.

Islam?
Suicide bombers/Kamikazes?
Software piracy on a mass scale?

Nobel Prize; now this is an award that had some meaning to me while growing up some 40 years ago. Honestly, this award has lost any significance in today’s world. Sewer material.

Keemo on January 20, 2011 at 9:11 AM

I have a question. I saw on Fox the other night the White House was flying two American flags with the chinese flag in between them. Is this common? Do the president’s fly other country flags when dignitaries (or in this case dictators) visit?

sicoit on January 20, 2011 at 9:12 AM

2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner holds State Dinner for man who has 2010 winner under House Arrest.

maybe someone should start a movement regarding fairness for Nobel Prize winners. The left loves that “fairness” word. Either free Liu Xiaobo, or imprison Mr. Obama.

fairness.

AZCoyote on January 20, 2011 at 8:15 AM

He obviously doesn’t think his fellow Nobel Prize winners are anything special either if he doesn’t believe that Liu Xiaobo was worth the most fleeting mention to his honored guest, not even whilst passing the salt.

Props (once again) to Jake Tapper for being the only member of the establishment press who had the requisite number of functioning brain cells to recognize that disturbing omission by our Dear Leader while he was feting China’s Dear Leader.

Some of Obama’s gaffes and Obamateurisms are indeed cringe-worthy, but nonetheless fully expected from a hyperpartisan egomaniac hamstrung by his own hubris.

Not sure why exactly, but to me this spineless little mouse’s refusal to stand up for his Nobel successor – even in the most diplomatically parenthetical way – has a hit a major nerve.

This is not so much Obamateurish as “Baracowardly” – truly odious & deeply shameful. UGH!

leilani on January 20, 2011 at 11:00 AM

We want to sell you all kinds of stuff. (Laughter.) We want to sell you planes. We want to sell you cars. We want to sell you software.

If Obama is so brilliant, then why has his Ivy league education failed? His comments were not presidential and not even funny. Just one more example of how he never prepares for anything, just flys by the seat of his pants.
Once again he bowed to China. His state dinner was shameful and overly expensive when he should be conserving our tax dollars. But wowie, we’ve got pandas for 5 more years. What a proud accomplishment!

GrannySunni on January 20, 2011 at 11:16 AM

Since few liberals have any idea what personal honor is, what makes anyone think they have a clue about national honor?

Random Numbers (Brian Epps) on January 20, 2011 at 11:23 AM

and the thing is, Chinese premiere Hu Jintao doesn’t give a wit about a state dinner. What he does care about is that he has Obowma eating out of his Chinese hand while he does exactly what he wishes.

Beaglemom on January 20, 2011 at 8:25 AM

Red may be the color of the international communist movement, but I don’t think China thinks of themselves as a communist nation any longer. Do Chinese living in China really consider red to be ‘their’ color? Is M’chell’s wearing of red pandering, or is it an insult to the Chinese, or do they even care?

slickwillie2001 on January 20, 2011 at 11:46 AM

I suspect that this big fancy meal is more a ‘reelect Bammie’ campaign event, and less to honor the Chinese leader. Those attending are being buttered up for big campaign donations later this year.
