House Dem exemplifies New Tone by comparing GOP to Nazis on House floor

posted at 2:15 pm on January 19, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Steve Cohen (D-TN) has merely updated his repertoire on his attacks against the Tea Party and Republicans. Nine months ago, they were the Klan with better fashion sense; now they’re Nazis using the tactics of Josef Goebbels. One might think being the target of a nasty anti-semitic slur and compared to a Klansman himself (by a fellow Democrat in his home district) might have taught Cohen a lesson in civility before the New Tone became the new Ugg Boots on Capitol Hill, but alas, as readers can see for themselves, Cohen still suffers from his chronic case of cerebral-rectalitis.

Will Democrats rush to their podiums to condemn Cohen for demonizing the opposition?

In an extraordinary outburst on the House floor, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) invoked the Holocaust to attack Republicans on health care and compared rhetoric on the issue to the work of infamous Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

“They say it’s a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels,” Cohen said. “You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. That’s the same kind of thing. And Congressman Cohen didn’t stop there.

“The Germans said enough about the Jews and people believed it–believed it and you have the Holocaust. We heard on this floor, government takeover of health care. Politifact said the biggest lie of 2010 was a government takeover of health care because there is no government takeover,” Cohen said.

I won’t be holding my breath waiting for the recriminations from his fellow Democrats.

Update: By the way, kudos to ABC for catching and reporting this.

The MSM isn’t going to report a Lefty for using such rhetoric but will continue to demonize the Right for supposed ‘hateful’ rhetoric.

This is the new tactic.

catmman on January 19, 2011 at 2:23 PM

I was willing to give him a pass if it was as simple as mentioning “Goebbel’s tactics” since he’s the most famous propagandist we’ve got. Though, it’s still in poor taste to mention him when saying “It’s propaganda” would suffice.

However, from the quote above it seems he went out of his way to draw similarities between calling Obamacare a “government take over” and saying that Jews use the blood of Christians for their motzah…..

JadeNYU on January 19, 2011 at 2:23 PM

Just wait until the liberals start saying that conservatives are insane, delusional, crazy, crazy, crazy people who should be institutionalized and medicated for their own safety and for the safety of the general public.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for his constituents to unseat him in 2012 either. It’s just the sad state of the city where I reside.

They already have polling up about this already:

Gallup:
People listening to Steve Cohen (D-TN) compare the GOP to Nazis, nearly seven-in-ten (69%) say the address was either excellent (36%) or good (33%), while 21% rate the speech as only fair (15%) or poor (6%).

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on January 19, 2011 at 2:25 PM

Will Democrats rush to their podiums to condemn Cohen for demonizing the opposition?

Not likely!!!

We heard on this floor, government takeover of health care. Politifact said the biggest lie of 2010 was a government takeover of health care because there is no government takeover,” Cohen said.

Two things on this. Politifact is liberal, is it not? And why does he want them to tell us? Shouldn’t our own elected representatives be saying that?

The other thing. It was already admitted that this Obutthead care was specifically designed to lead to single payer. That was by a Democrat.

Maybe he should shut up, go back, read, and catch up with the rest of us?

capejasmine on January 19, 2011 at 2:25 PM

Can someone start a score card for Congressional incivility?

I’d like to see what the numbers really look like.

I’m serious. Are there loud mouthed Republicans saying stuff like this? I don’t hear it, but maybe it’s because I agree.

On this score card, the exact statement needs included, so that when a R forgets to say “excuse me”, it isn’t counted the same as when a D yells “Nazi”.

You know, I have to laugh every time I hear a leftist compare the political right to Nazis. Aside from invoking Godwin’s Law, it just doesn’t even make any sense.

As educated people know, Nazis were leftist socialists. It’s even in the name of their party, The National Socialist German Workers’ Party.

You can see some of their pro-socialist/anti-capitalist propaganda here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nkPYTiWx4c

But putting all of that aside.

Leftists constantly point t blame for nearly everything for the Right’s desire to deregulate. The right’s desire for deregulation is the big leftist boogeyman.

Well, since when have Nazis been known for deregulation?

So yeah, they don’t make any sense at all.

Sure. Why not?

Hey, I wonder if in North Korea, as millions starve and thousands are imprisoned, the underground dissidents are quietly comparing Kim Jong Il to people who don’t want government-mandated health care.

I can see it now. Whispered, passionate speeches, denouncing the North Korean regime: “… and Chairman Jong Il is much like the evil Americans opposed to liberal health care reforms …!”

Sure. It’s all the same. Kewl.

Irony upon irony here, as the Left and The Big Lie will finally be undone by The Big Truth, that is, the aggregated “power of the people” (what the Leftist always claims he supports and champions). The Leftist despises the people and despises their power.

Why is it (pardon the expression) verboten to simply state the obvious: that Cohen has unequivocally proven the people who believe him to be a Fascist are RIGHT about him?

Of course it’s entirely possible (even likely) that the Democrat who called Cohen those things was ALSO a lunatic. But that doesn’t change the truth of the assertion.
