Quotes of the day

posted at 9:00 pm on January 15, 2011 by Allahpundit

“3. New York Times columnist Paul Krugman was one of the first prominent pundits to jump on the blame-Palin bandwagon. ‘We don’t have proof yet that this was political, but the odds are that it was,’ blogged Krugman the afternoon of the shooting. ‘[Giffords has] been the target of violence before. And for those wondering why a Blue Dog Democrat, the kind Republicans might be able to work with, might be a target, the answer is that she’s a Democrat who survived what was otherwise a GOP sweep in Arizona, precisely because the Republicans nominated a Tea Party activist. (Her father says that ‘the whole Tea Party’ was her enemy.) And yes, she was on Sarah Palin’s infamous ‘crosshairs’ list.’

“So, what about political rhetoric? If Loughner had developed a psychotic condition, such rhetoric might have sounded more extreme to him than it really was, according to Jeffrey Swanson, a psychiatry professor at Duke University School of Medicine. ‘Take something you or I might find mildly threatening. For the person with impaired perception of reality, that can get exaggerated to the point of being incredibly threatening.’

“We also know that delusional patients in different cultures have different kinds of misperceptions of the world. One study, by the Tokyo Metropolitan College of Allied Medical Sciences, compared schizophrenic delusions among patients in Tokyo and Vienna and found that European patients tended toward fantasies about poisoning and odd religious ideas, while the Japanese had delusions that they were being ‘slandered,’ which the authors surmise ‘may derive from the group-oriented self in Japanese ‘shame culture.” Such studies suggest that the broader culture — which would include the political climate — could affect the content of a psychotic person’s delusions, including what or whom the person perceives as threats.

“But those who say right-wing rhetoric was the one factor tipping Loughner misunderstand the complex nature of psychosis. ‘No single variable explains violence in schizophrenia,’ write Swanson and eight colleagues in a 2006 paper published in the Archives of General Psychiatry. ‘Rather, violent behavior occurs within a social-ecological system involving a ‘whole person’ with a particular life history and state of health.’ In short, saying Sarah Palin or Glenn Beck caused Loughner’s actions is, to put it charitably, completely idiotic.”

“A new national study among 1,437 self-reported Democrats, Republicans and Independents revealed that Americans indicated that Sarah Palin was more sincere and believable after viewing her speech in response to the shootings in Tucson…

“Respondents were asked to rate Sarah Palin on a scale from 1-7 regarding likeability, believability and sincerity, with 1 representing “not at all strong in this attribute” and 7 representing “extremely strong in this attribute.”

“With the exception of likeability among Democrats, Palin’s attribute ratings increased among all parties after viewing her speech. The most notable increase was her sincerity ratings, which increased from 2.62 to 2.69 among Democrats, from 5.25 to 5.45 among Republicans and from 3.68 to 3.85 among Independents.”

***
“Beck visited O’Reilly for his weekly segment to talk gender bias in the political sphere, and whether Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann were subject to more vicious attacks. O’Reilly didn’t buy this argument, asking Beck if it were possible for the vitriol against him to be worse than it is now. Beck seemed to agree, modestly, that he was one of the more hated figures in political media, and gave up data on why: ‘I have 15 operating threats on me at any given time.’ Despite the violent threats, however, Beck continued to argue that ‘Americans are fair and decent, and they’re not looking for revenge or anything else,’ and encouraged public and private figures alike to take his new pledge to ‘renounce violence regardless of ideology,’ something he perceived as essential for the strength of the nation, especially in light of the recent violence.”

***
“Toward the end of the town hall meeting Saturday morning, one of the shooting victims, J. Eric Fuller, took exception to comments by two of the speakers: Ariz. state Rep. Terri Proud, a Dist. 26 Republican, and Tucson Tea Party spokesman Trent Humphries.

“According to sheriff’s deputies at the scene, Fuller took a photo of Humphries and said, ‘You’re Dead.’

“Deputies immediately escorted Fuller from the room.

“Pima County Sheriff’s spokesman Jason Ogan said later Saturday that Fuller has been charged with threats and intimidation and he also will be charged with disorderly conduct.”

She is so good. That is an awesome line. Then she says, we are the light for the rest of the world. And she speaks so clearly, plainly, from the heart, solid conservative values every time.

Paul-Cincy on January 15, 2011 at 11:27 PM

I really thought her paraphrasing Thomas Paine was the best line in the speech. I don’t remember any national politican in my lifetime using thomas Paine in a speech. which goes along with her COMMON SENSE CONSERVATIVE theme. She used the book /pamlet common sense to reinforce her theme. amazing really. and they think she is stupid. ROFL….

Unfortunately, we can’t even control our “own”. Every nerve and muscle in obama’s pitiful frame is hair-trigger intent, 24/7/365 on one thing only: Destroy these United States, now, Now, NOW!.

And we get Ailes at Fox dog whistling the underlings like Krauthammer and Wallace to be their bestest, most subservient, servile, fawning selves as King Barack speaks to his people, while standing on the corpse of a nine year old girl. And take as many swipes at Palin as you want, “men”, them’s all free passes.

Didn’t Beck say “We surround them”? If we turn Fox off, where do all these RINOs go to make the kind of money WE enable them to make? Like a beaten wife, why do we allow CK to abuse us and abuse Sarah Palin? Because he’s just so “smart”? How about he’s just so envious. He couldn’t have cut through obamacare to come up with the words “Death Panels” to save his life, which obamacare will discount mightily, btw. Same with “blood libel”. So, like an envious schoolgirl, CK takes nasty shots whenever he can. Then has to walk it back, but not for long, and as for me, he’ll never walk it back. When I see him on, the mute gets hit or channel changes, just like it does when I see or hear his “brilliant” hero, obama.

We are in imminent danger of an extremely violent national collapse which is exactly what obama is pushing for, on all fronts. Then comes martial law and never again or trumped up elections. And internet oblivion.

And ANYONE who is not with us is against us. Can you hear us yet, Rove, CK, O’Reilly, Wallace?

cmsinaz on January 15, 2011 at 9:29 PM

Good catch on that. If it’s suddenly time for us all to “not jump to conclusions” again, you can be sure the perp is NOT a Republican or Tea Partier.

And since the perp is a card-carrying Democrat activist, I’m quite sure the same journalists who tsk-tsked Palin for tweeting “Don’t Retreat, Reload” are now going to go after his leader Barack “Bring A Gun and Get in Their Faces To Punish Our Enemies” Obama for all his incendiary rhetoric against “hostage-taker” Republicans.

Certainly I’m quite sure all the cross-hair obsessives at CNN will condemn Fuller’s party mates at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for its map with bullseyes on districts and helpful “Targeted Republicans” legend?

Just as I’m quite sure my new husband Hugh Jackman will be giving me a massage on the beach at Kona after I win Ironman this year, you betcha.

O’Reilly is a terrible interviewer. He doesn’t do research. He doesn’t prepare. He’s not sharp. He follows script rather than asking the obvious follow-up question. His over-riding concern will be to appear to be reasonable. He won’t lay a glove on Obama. He’s a teacher, not a lawyer. (Mind you Megyn Kelly let Dupnik off the hook this week, when she should have eviscerated him for his calumny.)

I stopped watchibng fox a long time ago. what got to me was their insane playing of the same video clip loop all freaking day. over and over and over again. then they devoted weeks, months to jackson, to anna nicole smith and to that teen in carribean. I thought you know there is much more important stuff going on so I turned to the web and got my news first hand so to speak. But the breaking point for me was after the 2008 elections when they allowed BOR and Carl cameron to trash Gov Palin with smear after smear until they understood the depth of Palin’s support then they dialed it back and hired her on. but by then they had lost me as a regular viewer. Now the only time I tune in is if Gov Palin is on and then only times I don’t want to want for the video to be posted on the web.

bigmike on January 16, 2011 at 12:01 AM

Submitted for your approval.

Here’s CNN deliberately setting the stage for a tragedy yet to come. By setting the narrative that responsible gun owners would commit such a crime. Instead, the warning signs of a deranged lunatic were not seen, because acting weird is not against the law.

What’s ironic is that it’s a debate between Dana Loesch and Ron Reagan. Notice how CNN and Rachel Maddow, um, spoiled brat Ronny Rayguns, provokes the thought of someone wanting to shoot someone at a Townhall meeting.

So, to give a shout out to the loony left, Mission Accomplished.

What if we chose a date and time, getting it out over all the interwebs and asking all the local TPer’s to coordinate gathering on their designated busiest intersections across the nation and linking arms to show solidarity and defense of Sarah Palin? And each gathering could video it and post a snippet of their gathering to one main website, so that the national impact can be seen.

Yes, I stuck a Rahm Emmanuel fork in Fox myself, quite a while ago. I dvd beck, o’reilly and hannity and then fast forward through them, giving beck the most benefit of the doubt as to how long I will watch. I can get through what I want to see on hannity and o’reilly in about 10 minutes, combined, unless Palin or Demint or Pence are on. Beck gets a little more leeway from me. Perrino, Rove, CK, that third stringer pro-abort margaret hoover and all the rest, (save Kimberly Guilfoyle and Perrino’s english partner, can’t think of his name now) are all so behind the curve of the fast moving pendulum that obama is riding that’s about to slice the nation in half that it’s unwatchable.

Has anyone else noticed that the Establishment Republican Pundits like Karl Rove, who have no problem popping up on cable TV 7 nights a week went completely MIA while the Tea Party, and Sarah Palin were being slammed by the Blood Libel Media?

I think Rove was hoping the Palin & the Tea Party would be damaged so terribly, he wouldn’t have to battle them in ’12.

Remember those who remained quiet during a time when Conservatism was under attack!

portlandon on January 15, 2011 at 9:44 PM

Let’s see…Rove strongly supported Angle in NV; criticized Murkowski for her antics in AK; called Rand Paul a good candidate; started supporting Rubio, over Crist, in October 2009! How exactly is he opposed to the Tea Party mentality when he backs people like that?

If you bring up his lack of enthusiasm for O’Donnell, I’ll bring up that it’s possible his dislike for her started when he looked at how she backstabbed the GOP, like Crist and Murkowski did, when she ran as a write-in in 2006 after losing in the DE GOP primary. Why should anyone on the Right trust her when considering that she’s never apologized for that stunt? Is the fact he’s not yet sold on Palin mean he will fight against her no matter what?

How is Rove an anti-Conservative RINO? Saying that makes as much sense as calling Lieberman a Conservative.

He’s my dark horse candidate pick should Palin choose not to run for some reason.

Sure…I’m uncomfortable that the Presidency would be his first elected office but each candidate or prospective candidate has pluses and minuses … and his lack of government experience can be spun as both a plus and a minus. Both are great ideas. However, your point was to create a message that not only Palin would hear, but all those that make the continuous contagion of hatred against a true American, rethink their prediction of Palin’s demise.

unseen’s idea to contribute to SarahPac is a good start.

Good point, Kini. We need to make a statement that everyone ccan see. I wonder what the best way or who the best person would be to float the idea and see if it picks up steam?

The McCarthyism of Gov. Sarah Palin, by the American Socialist Democratic Party.

A legacy of hatred beyond the reason of sense.

Kini on January 16, 2011 at 1:03 AM

The effort to drag down Sarah Palin for using the term “blood libel” has backfired.

The criticism had to do with wanting to restrict the term to its specific original context, a longstanding vicious lie about the Jewish people. The result of the criticism is that now when someone searches the term “blood libel,” they see Sarah Palin, Sarah Palin, Sarah Palin. If the intent of the criticism was to preserve the purity of the reference, it’s had the opposite effect. (If the intent of the criticism was to take advantage of a perceived opportunity to take another shot at Sarah Palin, the hypocrisy is too nauseating to describe.)

unseen on January 16, 2011 at 1:05 AM

Glenn Reynolds on the left’s twitching, frothing obsession with Sarah Palin:

“But here’s what’s going on in the dance between Palin and what she calls the ‘lamestream’ media: Every time they attack her, they wind up doing something that hurts them worse than it hurts her. She may not become President, and she may not even want to be President — though, regardless, it’s in her interest to keep everyone guessing as long as possible — but with little more than an Internet connection and Facebook she’s done more lasting harm to their position than anybody else. Last night Barack Obama threw them under the bus over the whole ‘rhetoric’ question, just hours after she had managed to work them into a snarling frenzy with an Internet video. Even though it’s hurting them, they can’t — and I mean, literally, psychologically can’t — leave her alone. And she’s getting rich the whole time.

“So I don’t know about ‘Presidential,’ but who’s dumb, here?”

Yeah, but who else would be mad at us?

Kini on January 16, 2011 at 12:29 AM

From the metaphorical point of view, Palin’s use of the term was properly apt.

The knives were out, and the blood was let. The Socialist Democrats feasted upon the blood of the innocent, and lit the fires of hatred.

They made victims beyond the range of a deranged shooter.

Kini on January 16, 2011 at 1:03 AM

Yes, and the double irony is that McCarthy was right about the communist infiltration. It always works that way.
The Left has to smear decent folks people (obama’s overuse and whistling “esses” has ruined that word for me) who are onto them and by killing them, literally or figuratively and then rewriting history. They’ve managed to zip right out of their 20th century, 100 million person murder spree, and into the 21st century WH. The rest of us better start doing something right real soon…

=====================

The theme of the event was “An American Conversation Continued” –

the idea being to continue the conversation that a madman’s brutal rampage had interrupted. So it was inevitable that the conversation would eventually turn to politics. It did, toward the end, with Amanpour leading a discussion on a very touchy but obvious topic: gun control.

That’s where the atmosphere turned tense. When Tucson Tea Party founder Trent Humphries rose to suggest that any conversation about gun control should be put off until after the funerals for all the victims, witnesses say Fuller became agitated. Two told KGUN9 News that finally, Fuller took a picture of Humphries, and said, “You’re dead.”

When State Rep. Terri Proud (R-Tucson) rose to explain and clarify current and proposed gun legislation in the state, several people groaned or booed her. One of those booing, according to several witnesses, was Fuller. Witnesses sitting near Fuller told KGUN9 News that Fuller was making them feel very uncomfortable.

The event wrapped up a short time later. Deputies then escorted Fuller from the room. As he was being led off, Fuller shouted loudly to the room at large. Several witnesses said that what they thought they heard him shout was,

“You’re all whores!”

Fuller, age 63, is a political operative who specializes in gathering petitions for ballot initiatives. Before the program began, he passed out business cards to people sitting around him that read:
“Signatures
“Expediting Initiatives since 2006
“J. Eric Fuller
“Political Circulator.”

A Pima County Sheriff’s spokesman told KGUN9 News that the department has charged Fuller with one count of threats and intimidation, and said they plan to charge him with at least one count of disorderly conduct. Humphries told KGUN9 News that he does plan to press those charges.
