Open thread: Obama’s speech in Arizona

posted at 7:43 pm on January 12, 2011 by Allahpundit

The memorial service should be underway at 8 p.m. ET, naturally airing live on all the cable news nets. I hope he does well; the victims deserve a thoughtful tribute. But I can’t say I’m cheered by the overt “branding,” replete with … souvenir t-shirts? It may not be the White House that’s behind it, but then, we no longer need facts to blame politicians for stuff they didn’t do.

Bryan Preston has the program for the service and wonders why Napolitano and Holder are speaking. She’s a former governor of Arizona and he’s technically the lead prosecutor, so I can understand if they’re there simply to express condolences. If they’re there because O decided there should be a “rhetoric” component to the evening and he wanted to stay above the fray by farming it out to underlings, well, let’s just say it’ll be a long night at the ol’ blog homestead later. (Bryan makes a good point about Napolitano, as head of DHS, possibly trying to frame this as an act of terrorism. Was Hinckley a terrorist too?) I’ve noted this before but Philip Klein puts it better than I did: Any possibility of a sincere debate on “rhetoric” became impossible when the left turned this from a national tragedy into a voodoo ritual. And if any of tonight’s speakers bring it up, inevitably that’s precisely how it’ll be seen.

I’ll leave you with this clip of Boehner and Pelosi honoring the victims with today’s House resolution. Giffords’s prognosis continues to be good, albeit obviously uncertain.

Blowback

I’ll tell ya right now what his staff is thinking …

“Damn, let’s hope this speech is better than Sarah Palins!”

… But it won’t be!

Well, Sarag sure set the bar for him. Let’s see if he can meet it.

I’m going to a memorial service Saturday, for a friend who committed suicide last week. I can promise you there will be no souvenir t-shirts.

rbj on January 12, 2011 at 7:48 PM

Look, even if Obama himself didn’t think up the branding idea for this event should not the President OF The United States or some of his staff perhaps[s stepped in and said: “Hey folks this isn’t a rally.”

Yet the truth is, it is a political rally.

Sharr on January 12, 2011 at 7:49 PM

But I can’t say I’m cheered by the overt “branding,” replete with … souvenir t-shirts? It may not be the White House that’s behind that here, but in any case, thank goodness we didn’t see it at Fort Hood.

Every funeral should distribute “I was there” T-shirts.

portlandon on January 12, 2011 at 7:51 PM

It’s a campaign rally for Barry. They’ll be handing out t-shirts, and they have a…logo. Seriously. Just let that sink in a bit. The Obama White House has created a logo and had t-shirts printed up to commemorate a mass murder.

Tacky doesn’t even to begin to describe…

Pelosi called this atrocity an ‘accident’. Unbelievable.

and the tshirts are de rigeur for the Obama crowd, it is ALL about the branding. That is how he became POTUS, he marketed himself to MSM and they in turn sold him to America like Pepsi.

The reason they dumped Deidre whoseywhats, the protocol lady who let the Salahis wander around the WH, was that in an in depth interview she discussed ‘the Obama Brand’ at length.

Apparently, we are supposed to be unaware of the branding theya re doing. Uh, good luck with that. Fool U.S. voters once, yada yada.

TCM has been running a Hal Roach film day today, showing films of Laurel and Hardy.

What a choice.

Watch Laurel and Hardy or watch Obama.

Both are staged and scripted. One is quite entertaining, the other not so much. One is honest in its presentation, the other quite the opposite.

As much as I am not a fan of Ted Turner, if the guys from Nielsen are checking, I’ll be watching TCM.

To most members of congress you and I and the majority of Americans are not worth even 3/5 of one of them. Probably not even 3/5,000 as much as one of them. People illegally in the U.S., primarily those from Mexico illegally in the U.S., kill thousand of Americans a year. In all likelihood dozens of Americans just since one member of congress was wounded. One is a national crisis and the other is ho-hum.

As for Hussein Louie, well he basically declared war on the State of Arizona some months ago.
