Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on January 12, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

I’ve heard of digging oneself into a hole. I’ve even heard of the First Rule of Holes, which is that when you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.  But I’ve never heard of anyone digging themselves out of a hole:

President Obama insisted America was ‘digging itself out of hole’ today as new figures offered a glimmer of hope for the country’s beleaguered economy.

103,000 new jobs were created last month and the unemployment rate dropped to 9.4 percent, its lowest level in 19 months, the Labor Department said.

But the job growth fell short of expectations and the drop in unemployment was mainly because people stopped looking for work. …

The trend is clear – the pace of hiring is beginning to pick up,’ he said as he toured a manufacturing plant in Maryland.

‘We’ve got a big hole that we’re digging ourselves out of.’

Digging one’s self out of a hole generally means getting mired deeper.  Perhaps President Obama was being uncharacteristically honest?

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

If we dig deep enough, we’ll end up in China. Which was probably his plan to begin wit.

Tommy_G on January 12, 2011 at 8:08 AM

First it was a ditch, now it is a hole. He should stop and consider than he is using the wrong shovel.

Beaglemom on January 12, 2011 at 8:10 AM

good point. One should be “climbing” out of a hole rather than digging whilst inside.

It’s pretty typical of the One, that he would be ignorant about the theory of holes. He probably failed in hole studies at Columbia, we’ll never know.

pablo5108 on January 12, 2011 at 8:22 AM

At the risk of being called pedantic, you CAN dig out of hole by taking dirt out of the side of the hole and piling it up on the floor of the hole. If you do this right, you’ll get a ramp you can walk out on.

But you will definitely need a few slurpees.

At least, on the positive side, Obama has moved on from the awful “drive the car in the ditch” metaphor.

but unless he plans on relocating to China, kinda hard to get out of a hole by digging! What a doofus. I’m so proud.

We need to immediately pass a new law forbidding the use of words like “reload” in case some psychos hear or see the words and are inspired to commit violent acts. Our national security depends upon it!

Now if everyone else would just stop looking for work, that unemployment rate could get back down to about 5% and the fed could find another segment of the economy to run into the ground.

Osis on January 12, 2011 at 11:22 AM

As poster said above he is digging his way to China as they own us now anyway, where he can show them the top of his head as he bows to the communists, who he greatly admires, and beg them to keep buying our worthless Treasury Bills as he and the tax cheat Geithner man the printing presses full speed ahead to further devalue the dollar and America.

This bumbling, fumbling, clown is gonna read a speech today that a far better man than him wrote and then Chris Matthews will piss down his leg at how great it is and how his messiah has returned from the dead!

And isn’t doctor prescribed leeches, sucking the life out of a sick Washington a good metaphor too?

Osis on January 12, 2011 at 11:24 AM

Actually the answer comes from seeing what Obama has done. When our economy went in the tank, Obama imploded his digging out of a hole philosophy.

He dug another hole, even deeper, thinking that he could tunnel under and then dig out – instead of just getting a ladder and climbing up.

katablog.com on January 12, 2011 at 11:30 AM

Perhaps President Obama was being uncharacteristically honest stupid?

With that minor correction, not uncharacteristic at all.

From Ed

But I’ve never heard of anyone digging themselves out of a hole

Just think, for a sec, will you?

What does it look like when you dig yourself out of a hole physically?

Yeah, that resulting mess will be worse than the original hole. And, yeah, that is Obama’s intent.

P.S. Oh yeah, and Obama is such a brilliant orator, a genius exponentially smarter than anyone on earth, a kind of God standing above us all, etc. etc./

lol

Sometimes Obama gives Biden a run for his “three-letter- word-jobs” money!

Alana on January 12, 2011 at 1:23 PM

But the job growth fell short of expectations and the drop in unemployment was mainly because people stopped looking for work. …

No, its mainly because people have used up all their UI and have been dropped from the rolls!

556,000#of people off the rolls per this report
103,000new jobs were created last month
meaning 453,000 people dropped from the rolls!
Once they are no longer on the rolls they are not counted as unemployed!

Obama miss-spoke when he says he’s digging us out.
More like he’s just shoveling it!

DSchoen on January 12, 2011 at 3:48 PM

Digging out of a hole means your digging a ditch, maybe that is why he keeps talking about one. Eventually that ditch runs into a place where there is a drop off. No need to dig after that since it is just down until you hit the bottom.
