Supercop: “There’s no doubt in my mind” that Loughner was affected by rhetoric, although I have no evidence of it
posted at 8:19 pm on January 11, 2011 by Allahpundit
Skip ahead to 1:30 for Matthews’s question about “atmospherics,” followed by Dupnik casually asserting that Loughner must have been especially vulnerable to “anger, hate, paranoia, and so forth.” If he has proof of that, he conveniently forgot to mention it. Over to you, Arizona Republic:
Was Dupnik unnecessarily inflammatory? It seemed so. But it came mere hours following a horrific, bloody mass murder. If you weren’t on edge, you weren’t being human. But then, on Sunday, the venting continued anew. And a horrified nation began paying closer attention to the Pima County sheriff.
The world’s eyes, once again, focused on Arizona for the worst of reasons. And Dupnik stood before the cameras interpreting the shootings as politically motivated, despite an increasing weight of evidence depicting the shooting suspect, Jared Loughner, as a mentally ill young man who rambled incoherently about pervasive bad grammar and other apolitical obsessions. Even Dupnik has observed that Loughner had made death threats against others and that they had been investigated by police…
Dupnik took up his cause again on Monday. And, in response, we have to say at last . . . enough. Enough attacks, sheriff. Enough vitriol. It is well past time for the sheriff of Pima County to get a grip on his emotions and remember his duty.
Dupnik needs to recall that he is elected to be a lawman. With each additional comment, the Democratic sheriff of Pima County is revealing his agenda as partisan, and, as such, every bit as recklessly antagonistic as the talk-show hosts and politicians he chooses to decry.
Other county sheriffs in Arizona have now started grumbling about him, even as Dupnik goes around telling people like Olbermann that it’s basically his legal duty to float half-witted psychological theories about how Sarah Palin’s fundraising literature may or may not affect the mind of someone who’s seriously deranged. And after days of gratuitously inflaming an already highly inflamed situation, what does he get? Why, a thank-you call from the president. Of course.
If you’re looking for a thoughtful psychological profile of mass murderers, if only to cleanse your mental palate of what you’re about to see, Ronald Bailey has a piece at Reason that’s worth your time. Nutshell version: “[U]nmarried, childless, unemployed white male with no readily discernible political motivations who just experienced a major life failure.” To follow on that thought, I was wondering last night after writing this post about Loughner’s mental state, is there any actual scientific reason to believe that deranged people are more susceptible to being incited by heated political rhetoric? Intuitively, it makes sense: An already agitated mind is apt to turn in extreme, unpredictable directions under further agitation. But as I say, that’s intuition, not science. Maybe some agitated minds would find political bombast too intense to stand, like turning a sun lamp on someone whose skin is hypersensitive to light. Or maybe, even within the category of deranged people, there’s some room for personal tastes and preferences when it comes to persuasion. Maybe having Glenn Beck scream at Loughner about Woodrow Wilson would increase the risk of him killing someone — or maybe it would just really freak him out. Maybe, per Loughner’s bent towards math and pseudo-philosophy, he’d be more easily programmed to kill by calmly feeding him “logical” conclusions (e.g., “all liberals/conservatives are racist, society is better off without racists, ergo society is better off without liberals/conservatives”). It stands to reason that pathologically erratic personalities will respond to stimuli in unpredictable ways — and yet here we have Dupnik, blithely insisting that, no, surely, surely, Jesse Kelly’s campaign events played some role in this. It takes a Supercop to read minds in ways that not even psychiatrists are able to, my friends.
Be sure to watch the whole clip for Matthews’s assertion that when Mark Penn said a new Oklahoma City might help Obama out politically, he only meant that it would give O a chance to play peacemaker. That’s simply not true: You can watch the original clip at Mediaite, with Penn talking about Obama using a tragedy like OKC to “reconnect” with voters after the midterm landslide. Even lefty Tommy Christopher was horrified by it.
Update: Speaking of Loughner and deranged minds, cops have revealed the text of another letter found in the safe in his house alongside the ones reading “I planned ahead,” “My assassination,” and “Giffords.” The text: “Die, bitch.”

Sheriffs are Elected. Not “Appointed”. as are Police Chiefs, or “Hired”, as are most other law enforcement people. That means that they can get political all they want (see the Suffolk County Massachusetts Sheriff’s office)
But that’s all the Sheriff of Nottingham’s fault, I suppose!

Sorry, cesspoolpedalian, but I saw Chuck Norris waterboard a guy on a “Walker Texas Ranger” rerun last week. That scene was filmed and aired while Bill Clinton was President, and no one complained. even though it was a Texas Ranger “torturing” a detainee.
Thanks for playing!

There’s something that’s just not right about the way this guy simply refuses to shut up (I mean, aside from the obvious fact that it’s incredibly unprofessional, inappropriate, and obnoxious.) I’m thinking of something more along the lines of “Me thinks thou doth protest too much” – kind of stuff.

There is another clip of Sheriff Looney Tunes which is being overlooked and which puts his meanderings into even more stark profile. It’s from the Megyn Kelly interview but I don’t see it quoted.
In his meandering tirade, at one point, he was going off on the usual suspects but he took a little detour. Perhaps somebody can find it.
He speaks of these people who merely stand in the way of a party that’s trying to do something to help the nation. In other words (sorry if the paraphrasing is off — I’ll go trying to find the exact language), he’s talking about (the Democrat talking point) REPUBLICANs (supposedly) blocking the DEMOCRATs from doing all the good things they’ve been trying to do.
This is beyond opinion, generally, about the effect of rhetoric. I was stunned when I heard it. It’s a big, fat, Democrat Party talking point. And, it has even less to do with the tragedy in AZ than the other nonsense he was spouting off.
Please, find that clip and reproduce it.
It shines a big, bright spotlight onto this (supposed) law enforcement officer’s true motivation. Wholly political. Wholly personal.
In my opinion (since he’s so fond of opinions), he has violated his oath of office. Not to mention disrespecting the tens of thousands of law enforcement officers out there every day, doing their jobs, by the book.
He should be… (oh, wait, don’t want to play that game)…
Spanked?

Back when I practiced law representing taxpayers all over the country, I’d always end my closing argument to the juries thus, something that rings true even today: “Ladies and Gentlemen, as citizens in this great country, we really don’t expect too much. But we do want our preachers moral, our sherrifs honest, and our government fair.”

Every year, thousands of young black men are shot dead in the ghetto for reasons as pointless as wearing the wrong color beads or brushing shoulders in the street. I take it liberals will next be addressing the question of whether or not the violent rhetoric in rap music contributes to this mass slaughter, and will be urging rappers to tone it down.
Or would that be anti freedom of expression or racist or something.

When does he come up for re-election? That’s when Republicans will be intentionally engaging if inflamed political rhetoric, and he’ll be in the cross hairs.
What a chump! He has done his friend, Rep. Giffords, a huge disservice by trying to make this a political issue instead of a uniting moment for mourning. I hope he gets booted out of office. He’s too lame for his office. The Democrats should encourage someone to run against him in the primary.

Imagine if this had been Obama. It would have been plastered on news 24/7 and Republicans would have been tripping over each other to condemn it.
This is why Republicans lose these arguments. As soon as this “art” came on the scene, every time a Republican got in front of a camera, he should have had a copy of the left’s portrayal of their version of the “Patriot Act.” They should have shoved this down the throats of every leftwing political group and forced them to confront and denounce it. Liberals ALWAYS get a pass on this crap.
If it weren’t for double standards, liberals would have no standards at all!

The really rich part, of course, is that all the points people are making are true even if he was influenced by “the violent atmosphere.”
In the real world, the overwhelming likelihood is that he either doesn’t know the Tea Party and Sarah Palin exist or, if he does, he has the same opinion of them as other 22 year old anarchists.
And few have addressed the real issue: that the “violent rhetoric” itself is entirely imaginary. All I’ve heard are the same two examples – “second amendment remedies” and some PG rated web graphic that Loughner never saw. The “blind rage” mainstream columnists have been decrying for a solid year has been nothing but political obstinance in the face of the Obama agenda.

Liberalism is a progressive mental disorder. This loon reinforces that fact. It seems the leftwing nutjobs are racheting up the rhetoric to make up for their butt kicking in November. So, if it’s the rhetoric, then lay off the “It’s-teh-rhetoric” rhetoric, or else step down, since you’re spewing rhetoric, which is what you say sets the unstable off.
That would be the most obvious epiphany he could have. Is there a recall campaign yet in Pima County? Barring that, call your local radio station and dedicate David Bowie Cat People to him.

See, this sheriff is so smart and knows so much about psychology and the mentally unstable. He knew there was a nut case in his jurisdiction making threats against people. He knew there was a congresswoman having open town hall meetings. He had to have known since he’s a sheriff.. that this nutcase might be able to get a gun someday and he knew… as he is telling everybody.. that the air waves are filled with hate and inflammatory rhetoric that might set off some nut to commit a horrible act of violence….. and yet he did nothing to stop it. Nothing!?
A thought occurred to me this morning. The found letters in a safe belonging to Loughner. I am wondering…. what are the odds Loughner made threats through the mail? What are the odds there is a letter or two in the sheriffs office that they had either received prior to this .. that Lougher had sent to the congresswoman and she turned over to the sheriff or a letter Loughner sent to the sheriff or even possibly.. a letter that Loughner had sent to someone within the community containing threats of violence?
Loughner liked to threaten. He had a history of doing so. He kept letters in his safe. It is very logical to assume he has sent a few letters to people and those letters exist and that the sheriff is aware of the,… maybe from years past.. last month or even the day before!
A letter would be a very damaging thing to the sheriff. Who knows what it might contain. I would bet a lot Loughner has sent people letters. It fits perfectly with the kind of nut he was. Especially since he loved televising his actions. He did it on his myspace. he did it through youtube.. he did it over the phone and he had to have done it through the mail a time or two!
Someone needs to ask this sheriff if he’s aware of any letters Loughner has sent to anyone threatening violence.

Ah yes, because Sarah Palin “targeted” Giffords’ district for a Republican victory in 2010, a paranoid schizophrenic with a fixation on Giffords began hatching a plan in 2007 to shoot Giffords, after she dissed him (or so he perceived) when she answered him in Spanish after he asked her one of his penetrating grammar questions.
Obviously Palin is responsible for Giffords’ injuries. The causal connection could not be any more clear — at least to those who possess the same type of keen intellect and razor-sharp reasoning skills of a Laughner or a sesquipedalian.
AZCoyote on January 12, 2011 at 8:17 AM

Then she needs to look at the DNC and DailyKOS for the same practice. Oh wait, they used real targets. Obama calls to ‘congratulate’ the sheriff?
We should be demanding to find out exactly what was the sheriff being ‘congratulated’ for? The true heroes in this scenario brought down the killer – not the sheriff or his department personnel – so it can’t be that. Was he congratulated for his insightful investigation (after the event)??? I mean, WTF!!!
MR. OBAMA, WHY IS THIS MAN BEING ‘CONGRATULATED’?????
BTW: Does anybody else have a sense of déjà vu on this matter, i.e. the Dems acting like ghouls during a time of national mourning in order to politicize an event.
Here’s Time magazines ‘take’ on the Paul Wellstone funeral, and the Dems mind-boggling behavior:
“Did the memorial service for Paul Wellstone cost Democrats the election? A backlash against the politically charged service almost certainly helped Norm Coleman beat Walter Mondale for Wellstone’s Minnesota Senate seat. And a private poll by Bill Clinton’s former pollster, Mark Penn, suggests the service backfired on Democrats nationally as well.
Penn found that 68% of voters knew about the servicea high awareness of an event broadcast live nationally only on C-SPAN. What’s more, 49% of voters said the service made them less likely to vote for a Democratand 67% of independents said they felt that way. One Democrat who quickly sensed that the service was a political disaster was Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, a possible 2004 presidential contender.
The next morning Kerry called Senate Republican Leader Trent Lott, who had been booed at the memorial, to tell him how bad he felt.

The people that hated her could probably dig a little deeper here and muster a bit more venom. Or not. This certainly isn’t going to turn around any people that admire her. I really think it’ll take a while but it’ll still backfire in liberal’s faces. I’m sure they thought they were moving political mountains during their Wellstone speeches. I’m sure they think this is a way to undo the losses in Nov.
hawkdriver on January 12, 2011 at 8:43 AM
Ahhh, the left. No lie disgusting enough not to like and embrace. No liar too disgussting to turn away – look at Obama embracing Dupnik. Why, he’s just speaking truth to power in claiming that engaging in political discourse is responsible for murder. That’s perfectly understandable and honorable. Reminds Obama of Reverand Wright’s sermons in fact. 9/11 was just the chickens coming home to roost. That’s all. America is bad and evil and republicans are the most evil americans. So, I’ll just call Dupnik and congratulate him on a job well done!! What a leader. What insight. What moral judgment. What a swell guy.
Why doesn’t it ever bother lefties that they must ALWAYS lie to get elected? They are never honest about their politics, policies or intentions during campaigns or after. In fact, during most campaigns you would think the democract candidate is a republican based on what they claim their politics are. No dem ever wants to be called “liberal” or even “progressive”. Why do then not want to be honest about their beliefs? I never see conservatives running away from the conservative label.
If you have to always lie, how can you claim you are right about anything?

Truth is not what the facts prove, but what he wants the truth to be. He is a hypocritical lying liberal, nothing more, nothing less.
volsense on January 12, 2011 at 9:15 AM
There’s no doubt in my mind that anyone picked up by the Sheriff’s office will use his statements to show that the office is led by someone who does not wait for evidence, prejudges incidents without having final results and then utilizes a biased viewpoint to push through his own agenda. And there is a lot better connection to him to those in the Sheriff’s office he directs than to whatever linkages the Left is trying to make with the Tea Party, Palin, Limbaugh, Beck, et. al.
That is not good for the justice system, to have someone like this who is willing to spout off before the evidence has been collected and bias an investigation by doing so. And you can bet there are a lot of sharp lawyers in AZ taking note of everything this guy says and getting nice time and date stamps for use in upcoming cases. Good way to ruin a justice system, by having someone like this leading it.

But in your deranged little mind, it is only “confrontational” if it opposes socialism.

Are you joking?
After all the hateful crud (yes, comparisons to blood libel are appropriate here) thrown at Palin, you’ve decided that what doesn’t help is her communique today????
Wake up. The majority of American’s know that this is a blood libel type situation and will applaud her for calling it out.
This fake rhetoric issue is only being embraced by extreme leftists. Overall, it’s really going to hurt your side.

I love how the left is trying to claim that saying anything to disagree with their policies or doing anything to oppose their policies is “confrontational politics”.
Closing republicans out of drafting major legislation – not confrontational.
“I won” – not confrontational.
If they bring a knife, we bring a gun” – not confrontational
“they are holding america hostage” by not agreeing to increase taxes – not confrontational.
Passing gov’t takeover of 1/6 of the economy while more than 50% of americans oppose it – very passionately – not confrontational.
Using the FCC to regulate the internet, even after teh courts said they couldn’t – not confrontational.
Using the unions to physically intemidate constituants during town hall meetings – not confrontational.
Calling bush “hitler” or “chimp” – not confronataional.
Stating one’s opposition to Obama’s policies? Beyond the pale. We should pass legislation to stop people from doing that. It is pure evil.

This whole debate demonstrates just how far the american left has moved to facism, which is always the end result of leftism, whether it be international communism or national socialism. They always seek ways to use gov’t power to regulate speech or activities of those they disagree with.
The left always reacts the same way to any tragedy – demonize their political opponents and hope it sticks so that they can use that to drown out opposition. there is no “right” or “wrong” in a leftist worldview. Only what helps the movement and what hinderst he movement. Thus, despicable tactics are never morally wrong when they engage in them. In other words, the end always justifies the means for a leftist.
the left hates freedom b/c it interferes with their plans to make a perfect world through gov’t regulation.

Dear media: You can stop trying to figure out who did it. They know who shot Gabby Giffords and murdered the others at the rally. It was Jared Lee Loughner. All by his crazy self.

Postcard Campaign – Protesting Sheriff Dupnik.
Mutnodjmet on January 12, 2011 at 10:57 AM
Except the evidence is pointing to Loughner’s having planned this out for a long long time results of search warrant and what was found in his safe a letter dated 30 August 2007 – his first contact with the Congresswoman. Way before Glenn Beck – Woodrow Wilson segments. Long before there was a Tea Party at least a year before Sarah Palin came on the political scene. I don’t know what conservative talk radio was discussing back in 30 August 2007 maybe the Sheriff Dupnik can inform us? Because I doubt anyone remembers if they even listen to conservative talk radio in the first place.
When will there be a CALL for an INVESTIGATION of Sheriff Dupnik, he’s doing everything to deflect and distract everyone that he FAILED to protect the citizen’s of Pima County Arizona. Loughner had been arrested many times before – what did the authorities do i.e. Dupnik? Last night on Hannity he mentioned the Sheriff’s department were checking their records to see if they had any contact with Loughner….remember his mother works for Pima County. We are supposed to believe that the FBI has been on the case since Saturday, and hasn’t looked at all this kid’s criminal record? Really? It’s reported that Loughner was arrested multiple times, but there are no records of his arrest available? How is that possible? This Smells and this sheriff thinks smearing media outlets, he doesn’t agree with will give him cover? No one will look into it closer. The FBI will just skip over that part of the investigation? After a Federal Judge was murdered? Really?
If the FBI doesn’t look into why a repeat offender had access to buying firearms maybe Darrell Edward Issa will? After all it would be Rep Issa’s purview, Rep Giffords a congressional colleague. Could the Arizona massacre have been prevented? Why isn’t anyone asking Dupnik HOW this happened on his watch?
The cover up is always worse than the original sin.

This clown has a point. His rhetoric sure is affecting me. Hell, liberal rhetoric affects me all the time. To vote, to talk to my kids, to talk to my friends…all about the sickness of liberalism.

Anyone want to give odds that this loon is reelected again?

You have no idea how surprised we were to read that editorial in the AZ Republic. Almost had to pinch ourselves to see if it was real. I’m curious how this will affect the defense, if at all.
Dupnik, in case you don’t know, has a history of making inflammatory remarks. The comments below are from August, 2010.
By the way, if you haven’t heard, the attorney appointed to defend Loughner is the Unabomber defense lawyer.

Earth to Dupnik… MECCA is the mecca of prejudice and bigotry.

Cart out the plastic lawn furniture.

THEN we can move on.

Curious, why aren’t they releasing the records?
The Sheriff sure is expending a lot of energy on a failed meme. So, why is he trying to divert attention towards others?
