Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on January 7, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Sometimes, further commentary is unnecessary, except to say … can you imagine the laughter if George Bush was photographed walking with his family dressed like this?

And I fully expect someone to e-mail me a picture of Bush having the same problem buttoning his coat within the next few hours.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Illustrations by Chris Muir of Day by Day. Be sure to read the adventures of Sam, Zed, Damon, and Jan every day!

I suppose a couple years ago, all the fashion conscious young men would start buttoning up their jackets wrong to emulate their super cool POTUS. Maybe not so much lately.

So his Research/Protocol Department handles buttons/button holes also? If he can keep his Obamateurisms combined to this and yesterday’s, reelection is assured.

OT: Ok, now I’m confused. Drudge has the unemployment rate dropping from 9.8% to 9.4% which is pretty damn impressive. But then he also has December showing the net job growth being 113,000 which frankly is underwhelming for the holiday season.

So what gives? How does the rate drop that much when we barely added over 100,000 jobs?

Doughboy on January 7, 2011 at 8:36 AM

The big story in that picture was the God-awful ugly tight pants MO had on. Good grief, one of her thighs is equal to three of Barry’s!

Is the severe drop in the unemployment rate tied to the 99′ers as they call them finally exhausting their benefits? Either that or people just flat out giving up looking for work. I can’t think of any other logical explanation for a plunge to 9.4% without a huge amount of jobs added.

resentment is an ugly thing, folks.

sesquipedalian on January 7, 2011 at 8:46 AM

Ed, you should swap at least one of those photos out for the one of the whole family—it’s a lot easier to see how his jacket is buttoned if you can see the flaps of it flying off at horrendously skewed angles.

And yeah. This is one of those things that I’m personally willing to write off as, “Well, it happens to all of us.” But if any Republican president did this, we would never hear the end of it. I think we need to take the high ground here most of the time, but that King of the Photo Op doesn’t know to look in a mirror—or at least ask his wife and/or kids, “Do I look okay?”—before going out for pictures like this (and no way is it natural), I say he deserves some ribbing.

Thank you, Ed!! I thought only MOTUS would report this!

But, you didn’t show what his wife was wearing! It’s a sight to behold (printed leggings, no make-up, no wig, oversized jacket… quite the sight even for her!). To fully appreciate his idiocy in mis-buttoning his jacket, one has to see MO and even little MO (with her lumberjack jacket and blue shirt, poor thing!). Maybe Ed thinks the site would melt if the pic in all its glory was posted ;)

I’ve always understood that OOTD was sometimes going to be a bit silly, a bit ‘what if Bush did it’. We have the hard-hitting stuff and then we have the fun. No one, not even Obama, is going to make a catastrophic move every single day.

And that picture is hilarious. And if there’s one of W like that somewhere, I’d laugh about it too. The difference is that W would probably laugh with me.

lonesome_pine on January 7, 2011 at 9:32 AM

Hey Ed, why did you cut Michelle my belle out of the picture. It tells the complete story. Neither know or care how they dress.

Actually, we are all RACCCCCCCCISSSSST. This photo was purposely taken to show the unemployed what they are doing wrong when dressing for job interviews. Remember, jobs is Obama’s priority.

I pity the poor photographer and wonder where his next job will be.

Doughboy on January 7, 2011 at 8:36 AM

The business guy on Fox and friends explained it.

it is the unemployed dropping off the rolls so the total count goes down as more are dropping off than signing up. This is December numbers, the peak of holiday retail hiring season, just wait for the Jan.- Feb numbers and watch the mother – n – media try to spin those.
Also the time for staying on unemployment welfare is now 32 weeks way up from like 18.

I cut dinglenuts a pass on this one (I’ll bet his pants were sharply creased and he had a tingle running up his leg, however). I once showed up at a function wearing two different shoes, so am not in a strong position to criticize. That being said, nobody ever slobbered over how urbane, suave and debonair I am, either, so this is more an amateurism on the part of those embarrassing goofballs who think O’Boingo is some kind of (fashion) god. Of course, they’re the same idiots who compare Mudfence Michelle O’Boingo to Jackie O.
