Harry Reid: The tea party will disappear as soon as the economy recovers
posted at 8:23 pm on January 7, 2011 by Allahpundit
He’s kidding himself, but it’s hard to fault him for being cynical given the track record of populist movements. After all, the Perotistas were a force for a few years in the early 90s, but they eventually went away. Or … did they? One of the points to ponder from yesterday’s Gallup data about independents dominating in party ID is how much continuity there might be between Perot voters and modern-day tea partiers. Not all indies are fiscally conservative, granted, but I’d bet that a heavy majority are; the “tea party” label might dry up, but the people to whom it applies will still be there. And in an age where conservative media is around to champion them and the Internet is available to make organizing easier than it’s ever been, there’s really no reason to think they’ll fade. Even if Reid’s right that the economy is driving people into the tea-party camp who might not otherwise be there, we’re looking at four to five years, at least, of poor unemployment to come. Plenty long enough for a grassroots movement to get its sea legs and develop into a sustainable lobby, I’d think.
That’s the first clip; the second clip is of Reid noting that the media thinks repealing ObamaCare is a waste of time. Really, Harry? The media?

If the Tea Party is going away when the economy recovers, it’s unlikely the Senator From Harrah’s will be around to see it.
Heck, given the performance of Osama Obama and Congress, we probably won’t be around to see the economy recover.

I don’t think the Tea Party is going away. As long as there is a Harry Reid or a Nancy Pelosi or a Barrack Obama, or a Liberal anywhere, the Tea Party will be on them like ants on a sugar cube.
BetseyRoss on January 7, 2011 at 8:45 PM
Perot in 1992, Tsongas and Rudman’s Concord Coalition, the 1994 Contract with America, the 2010 Tea Party, they’re all related. If we could just get it together and get some momentum. Bush II in 2000 and 2004 certainly slowed us down. He was a big government guy. Spending, prescription drugs, amnesty. The small govt people are assembled. We’re waiting for our small govt guy to get in there. It could be Palin. Or Romney? Or a player to be named later. We’ve been waiting for 20 years now. It wasn’t “read my lips” Bush I.
Paul-Cincy on January 7, 2011 at 8:45 PM
The “TEA Party” was born out of Obowma, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi shoving ObowmaCare down our throats, as the last straw to their Marxist/Socialist agenda…
… In other terms, American Citizens who still remember that these clowns in Washington, D.C. actually work for us.
WE are not going anywhere…
… Instead of just going to work everyday, raising our families, and trusting that those elected will do the right thing, all of that has changed.
Thanks to Harry Reid, et al, we will still work, raise our families, and be members of our communities…
… But the days of not taking our eyes off of our elected officials in Local, State, and Federal Office anymore is the “New World Order”.
Why, you ask? Because we are American Citizens, suffering from being raped…
… and we will NEVER let it happen again!

Big difference between Tea Party people and Peroites.
The Tea Party has no leader, but does have a common message.
Pero was a crazy old man who was living under somebody’s stairwell with a incoherent message. peppered with shouts of, “are you ganna let me finsih?“, “are ya?“, “well are ya?“

rihar on January 7, 2011 at 8:48 PM
Stupid Harry. The TEA party did not originate because of job losses. It began as a backlash to out-of-control federal spending with all of its waste, fraud, and power-grabbing. It stands for Taxed Enough Already. The American people are fed up with paying taxes for programs that it neither wants nor needs.
We are a nation of independent, liberty-loving people. We do not want the government to “take care of us.” We want to be left alone in order to pursue our own happiness as we individually define it and to enjoy the fruits of our labors. We are more than happy to share our bounty with others when we make that decision for ourselves.
Watch Harry’s blinkering eyes every time that he tells a talking point whopper.

Some could look at how the Perot movement flamed out in the 90s as the economy boomed and believe that the Tea Party is going to go the same way. There are differences. The fiscal situation at all levels of government is far worse now and there is no new industry on the horizon that is going to fuel the economy as the tech industry did in the 90s.

The Tea Party is more about an idea than it is about taxes. It is the idea of individual empowerment and responsibility vs government control.
I could accept higher taxes tomorrow. For that to be true though, government would have to be slashed in all areas, laws and regulations would have to be severely pared, freebies would have to eliminated for all but the most helpless, and the increase would have to go directly to reducing the debt.
If all those things were done though, the debt would probably decline on its own as the real problem is not lack of revenues.
It is lack of governmental responsibility.

Harry Reid became a state Senator with a personal wealth of approximately 100K… Today dingy Harry is worth over a hundred million, all on a Senator’s salary…
This is what the Tea Party is all about Harry. We are going to find out how you (and all others) became so wealthy. We are going to investigate the entire machinery that controls our political establishment Harry. We have much work to do Harry, and we realize that this work will be a two phase effort. First we will investigate, prosecute, and replace. Second we will keep a very close eye on the newly formed establishment, never again taking our eyes off the political process.
As Miss Carpenter sang so eloquently; we have only just begun…

petefrt on January 8, 2011 at 9:47 AM
You’re also looking at a situation where the question will have to be asked; did the “Tea Party” fade because the economy got better, or did the economy get better because of the “Tea Party” and it’s impact upon governance, and faded because it was no longer needed (or something to that affect).
The squeaky wheel gets the grease; Reid sees that as merely silencing the squeaky wheel, when in reality it’s more than that – the entire vehicle operates more efficiently and better in my feeble borrowing of this metaphor.

Eventually the Flower Children of the 1960s grew up and left Woodstock too–but not without changing the national landscape for decades to come.
I consider the Tea Party Movement to be nearly as influential as the peace movement of that time. Even if the protests end, the full effects of the Tea Party movement will continue to reverberate as the newly elected Congressmen and women come to power.

The Tea Party ISN’T going away! American’s are PISSED OFF.
Last night I went to a “Town Hall” that our State Rep. put on at the library. STANDING ROOM ONLY, 200 seats filled, lines outside the door.
YES, the Tea Party was WELL represented, along with a few hippys; “Un-Documented Americans”; and attorneys.
The purpose of the “Town Hall”. To discuss this representatives Arizona style immigration bill (Rep. William Snyder, R, Dist 82). Amazingly, 4 different news crews and 4 different newspapers showed up. They, based on their questions of both sides that I heard, seemed to be looking at it fairly (surprise, surprise). We’ll see what’s in the paper later today.

It’s looking like it will be. We’re at an historic crossroads, and the TPM may be what gets us safely through it.
These lefties would have us think that the TPM is new and transitory. What they don’t want to acknowledge is that the Movement flows from the Reagan Revolution, or even from Goldwater. It’s a deep, strong current within mainstream America that sometimes needs crisis to spring to the surface and make itself heard.
