Senate Dems to Boehner: You shall not pass (ObamaCare repeal)!

posted at 2:15 pm on January 3, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Among the top priorities for the new Republican majority in the House will be the repeal of ObamaCare.  Speaker-to-be John Boehner has already scheduled a vote on a repeal bill, which is expected to pass handily, at the very least on party lines.  The leadership of the Senate Democratic Caucus has told Boehner not to bother:

Top Senate Democrats are warning House Speaker-elect John Boehner they’ll block any Republican effort to repeal President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.

Citing better Medicare prescription coverage and other changes in the new law, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his top lieutenants say the overhaul “is too important to be treated as collateral damage in a partisan mission to repeal health care.”

Well, perhaps Reid and his cohorts Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin, and Patty Murray should have considered making those changes incrementally rather than as part of a massive government reordering of the health-insurance industry. If those changes deserve support, then they could have received it without imposing mandates on states for coverage, mandates on insurance companies for enrollment, and mandates on individual citizens to carry insurance as a consequence of breathing.  Instead, they chose to pass it as a massive enterprise without much consideration of its consequences, which have been rolling out faster than even its staunchest critics predicted.

This is not an unexpected response, of course, but it’s a rather public dare.  By demanding that Boehner cease and desist, Reid is guaranteeing a fight over ObamaCare in the 112th session, which is probably unavoidable anyway.  That won’t play well for Democrats if it lasts through to 2012 and the next elections.  Democrats hope to have the GOP strangle itself in the difficult issues of budgeting and debt as a way to argue for their defense of 23 Senate seats in that election.  If Reid wants to make the next two years all about the same issue that dominated the last two years, Republicans might well end up with a filibuster-proof majority in 2013 as well as a stronger majority in the House.

Reid is poltically tone-deaf. He thinks a year-long fight over health care will help his party.

Of course, the media will hammer the GOP about being distracted from efforts to create jobs, even though they never bothered to point that out last year. But that won’t sway as many voters as it would have a few years ago.

percysunshine on January 3, 2011 at 2:26 PM

First off, if the House de-funds Obamacare there is nothing the Senate can do. Second off, passing a repeal of Obamacare in the House puts all of the 23 Democratic Senators up for re-election in 2012 in the cross-hairs. They have to take the credit or more probably the blame for stopping repeal. Now a whole chunk of these senators are from Red states and so they won’t appreciate the choices being forced on them and the ones from Blue states aren’t going to be helped by it. So it’s a head I win big, tails you break even situation.

The interesting question is how many Dems up for re-election in 2012 will oppose a repeal bill. Especially with GOP majorities in many state legislatures for redistricting, full bore support of Obamacare could come at a significant price.

Cindy Munford on January 3, 2011 at 2:34 PM

Perhaps Boehner ought to present the food in bite size portions rather than shoving all 16 courses into Congress’ mouth at once. Then, each Republican idea gets an individual airing, and the Democrats have to show why they think each idea is wrong, rather than finding the inevitable single element of the combined legislation which gives them a principled stand for saying no.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his top lieutenants say the overhaul “is too important to be treated as collateral damage in a partisan mission to repeal health care.”

The partisan play was passing it against the wishes of a substantial majority of the voters, not promising to repeal this tax and spend left-wing boondoggle.

Jaibones on January 3, 2011 at 2:37 PM

with no fed stimulas funds to bail out the states this year the grim reality of our national economy will hit home with voters in 2011 with much more impact than in 2010. just wait until state offices are closed more than open, parks go unkept and the layoffs and furloughs of state workers hit this spring.

cutting off the blood supply to obamacare and the epa will be much easier politically than the dems think.

I dunno. Considering McConnell is in the minority, and has several RINO Senators to deal with, I think he does a good job. He can’t help it if a third of his Senators are willing to make deals just to appear “moderate”. He does a nice job keeping lots of stuff from ever making it to the floor for a vote.

Democrats are reading their own press releases and calling them “the will of the people” again. I’ll bet that Reid won’t even bring a repeal up for debate in the senate because it would pass. They don’t want to force Obama to Veto an effort to repeal because they know how unpopular OBAMACARE is.

We know that they know simply because they are all condeming the word OBAMACARE as a “partisan attack”. They are afraid of tainting Obama by naming hated legislation (that they themselves crafted!) after him.

The posturing will be interesting. The GOP will expect an up/down vote on the repeal in the Senate, or at least a cloture vote — will all those Senate dems up for election in 2012 put their name down as blocking repeal? If Reid refuses to let the matter be voted on, the House can play that game too on Senate initiatives. The House will simply say, “We’ll schedule the vote right after the repeal bill gets an up & down vote in the Senate.”

Thank you Lord for giving us Sharron Angle without her we might not have Harry to kick around anymore. I love they way they are going to double down on stupid. This was the same campaign strategy they used when they lost the House and came within a whisper of taking the Senate.

There is one main reason for the GOP resurgence, Americans are Taxed Enough Already because the spending and debt are out of control! Obamacare exacerbates this problem tremendously. This is why We The People want it repealed and installed Republicans to do so.. Getvresl Harry, that’s why Boehner is now Speaker.

Any Nevadans out there? Or maybe afraid to admit it?

Be assured, I will indeed pass this time.

Hang the repeal bill on the debt ceiling bill.

Tell Reid that you can’t have one without the other.

GarandFan on January 3, 2011 at 6:15 PM

It does not surprise me in the least to see Big Dick Durbin part of this!

Durbin is the biggest disgrace Illinois has ever elected to the Senate, 2nd only to Carol Moseley Braun!

He could care less about his own constinuents! All he cares about is looking good to his own Democrat party!

He is nothing but a glorified butt-kisser!

pilamaye on January 3, 2011 at 2:25 PM

Actually He’s worse than Mostly-Fraud.
I was going to say that having Durbin as a senator makes me ashamed to be from Illinois…but I started being ashamed to be from Illinois before he went ‘national’.
*sigh*

I’ll bet that Reid won’t even bring a repeal up for debate in the senate because it would pass. They don’t want to force Obama to Veto an effort to repeal because they know how unpopular OBAMACARE is.

Mord on January 3, 2011 at 2:44 PM

The Senate has this lovely little convention called amendments, and they do not have to have ANYTHING to do with the bill and can be proposed by anyone. So all the GOP has to do is pick the bill the Dems like, and add an exact copy of the House repeal as an amendment. This will force a cloture vote and floor vote on the repeal. If it passes, and is attached to the bill and the bill passes, well – then the Pres either has to veto the whole shebang, or sign it. Aren’t Senate rules grand?

Don’t blame Nevada, blame the SEIU and the fearful unemployed. My young voting daughter told me everyone she spoke to on unemployment voted for the check. Scared to death of not paying the rent.

The SEIU, my Goodness, every “service” employee is a member, and Nevada is a desert with infamous service type industry. They ran TV ads AFTER the Health Care bill passed urging viewers to call Mr. Reid’s office to thank him.

Boggles my mind really.

Mr. Reid is like a skeleton holding on to his specter of Power. His time is passed. He really should be mocked and stripped of Senority, kind of like our friend in Alaska, and so on and so on.

We (conservative Americans) won.
And will continue repudiating the liberal views.
Now get in the corner, out of the way and shut the h3ll up Mr. Reid.
