Quotes of the day

posted at 9:00 pm on December 31, 2010 by Allahpundit

“Palin is by no means politically unnuanced. Quite the contrary, she is as politically savvy as they come, whether on the domestic or international front. Her speeches during the recent congressional elections were not only unteleprompted barnburners in the best populist tradition, but revealed a meticulous command of the domestic issues currently bedeviling the nation as well as a finely nuanced understanding of America’s pancreatic failures in international diplomacy. She displays a far more realistic perspective on the Middle East and has far more accurately taken the measure of America’s geopolitical competitors, particularly Russia and China, than anyone in the Democratic administration.

“But is Palin electable? The next two years will determine whether she will be able to counter the slanderous media campaign against her candidacy and her competence, and so convince enough people that she has the right stuff to lead the country in perhaps its most perilous historical moment since the Civil War. Clearly, she suffers more than her share of antagonists among the megabuck left and their myriad satellites, Ivy League academics, mainstream journalists, public intellectuals, union impresarios and henchmen, and the entitlement-addicted segment of the public. They are terrified of her. She even has the panjandrums in the Republican old guard shaking in their Guccis.

“As Victor Volsky writes in American Thinker, ‘in the eyes of the political/cultural aristocracy, [Palin] is the embodiment of its worst nightmare: the revolt of the masses against their masters.’ And she knows that the master class will mobilize its considerable reserves against her. The question is whether, by sheer force of character, will, and charisma, like an American version of Delacroix’s Marianne leading the charge at the electoral barricades, and by pursuing a tireless itinerary, she can prevail against overwhelming odds and bring to the American people authentic change and genuine hope for the future.”

***
“Yes, she did give at least a couple of Serious Policy Speeches, but I don’t get the sense that they got any traction at all, not with all of the tweets and the reality shows and the books stuff with platitudes. Her fans, of course, never needed convincing, but for the rest — and, here, I’m really focused on Republicans — is there anyone who wrote her off as a lightweight who is now giving her a new look because of her speech on the Fed? I very much doubt it. As for proving herself trustworthy to interest group leaders and Republican politicians, well, I haven’t seen any reporting that even hinted at that. She had some notable good calls in the 2010 contest, such as in the South Carolina gubernatorial race, but just as many bad, or just odd, endorsements. I can’t imagine that the Joe Miller fiasco helped, either.

“Mostly, she’s giving every indication that if she formally enters the race, she intends to run as a factional candidate by mobilizing her personal loyalists. That was a viable strategy in the 1970s, perhaps, at least on the Democratic side, but it’s highly unlikely that a factional candidate can win now in a coalition-style nominating process.

“It’s not too late for her, but it’s getting closer, I think.”

***
“DeMint backed Romney in the 2008 presidential primary — but said he’s got ‘an open mind’ about 2012…

“Palin, for one, has never talked to DeMint before, even though they hail from the same part of the ideological spectrum and are considered heroes of the tea party movement.

“‘We’ve never spoken, but she left me a nice message, and I believe she’s done more for the Republican Party than anyone since Ronald Reagan,’ he said.”

***
“On balance, these factors look somewhat less favorable to Ms. Palin than they did a year ago. In particular, it should be alarming to her how quickly some figures in the Republican establishment have turned against her. It is probably not a coincidence that these attacks began to escalate shortly after this November’s elections, in which Republicans were perceived as having sacrificed several Senate seats, like in Delaware and Nevada, because of having nominated unelectable candidates.

“Meanwhile — after an interim period in which she seemed to be playing the role of the happy warrior, endorsing and raising money for Republican candidates — Ms. Palin recently seems to have become less selective about the arguments that she is engaging in. Her choice to attack Ms. Obama’s anti-obesity initiatives, for instance, suggests that she is either not listening to advice or that her advisers are not highly competent. Instead, she should be erring on the side of turning the other cheek: one thing that has generally been true is that presidential candidates who project a sunnier, more optimistic disposition tend to outlast those that come across as angrier. This may be especially important for Ms. Palin, who is always a lightning-rod for criticism; she doesn’t need to instigate any conflicts that she isn’t already engaged in.

“Still, Ms. Palin has some unique strengths, like her ability to use new media to attract the political world’s attention virtually at her whim. It remains conceivable, also, that the attacks that Ms. Palin will receive from members of the Republican establishment — and those which she will eventually begin to receive from other Republican Presidential contenders — could be turned to her advantage if she manages them in the right way, considering the anti-establishment mood in some corners of the party.”

Does anyone know why Krauthammer keeps mentioning Palin’s name if he really feels the way he does?

I don’t understand why he would obssess over this woman every week.

Shouldn’t this idea of Palin for president have ended when he demanded that she leave the room?

How many times has he told us his feelings about Palin?

I will have to give Krauthammer credit for stealing the “half-term governor” reference form the Left.

The “half-term governor” description must be a DC cocktail party side splitter that draws many giggles from those in attendance.

So what candidate does everyone think Krauthammer will decide worthy enough to vote for in the primary.

Do we even need a primary?

Maybe Lord Charles should pick the GOP nominee.

I find myself usually in agreement with Lord Krauthammer, but on this issue, this hillbilly thinks that His Royalness is a bit off the mark.

Myself, I think that the K-Hammer could use a little bit of vacation-time through the real America; the rest of America that he obviously never experiences, ever.

I’m not sold on SP. I’m not sold on anyone yet… but SP hasn’t been able to give me any sense of confidence in her ability to effectively communicate the conservative cause or effectively debate the issues with the left (beyond some one-liners).

I know she can debate the left, but I just see her choosing snark over substance too many times (see: The Hannity Disease). Reagan balance the two and every snark was dripping with effective truth.

mankai on December 31, 2010 at 10:53 PM

Oh goody, now the concernedly-concerned concern trolls are out!

Dude [ or dudette]you must be joking. NO ONE can articulate the solid principles of Conservatism as well as Sarah Palin.

I know it hurts you to see your fellow leftist travelers ripped to shreds by her “snark” [as you call it] but even that is in the grand tradition of Ronald Reagan who continually ragged on his opponents with jabs exactly like hers.

Let me just leave you with one of my favorite Reagan quotes you can take back to the club house and mull over with your buddies:

It’s not that our liberal friends are ignorant, it’s just they know so much that isn’t so.

Fits you to a tee.

I copied this from Wiki.
They’re good for a laugh…though if I could find the video they’d be funnier.

Due the melodramatic nature of the ads, they became ripe for Internet parody and found their way into the satire of popular culture…

Some of the more famous examples that were printed in the National Post were:

* “Stephen Harper has a dog. You know who else had a dog? Hitler. Adolf Hitler. That’s who. Did Stephen Harper train his dog to attack racial minorities on command? We don’t know. He’s not saying.”
* “Stephen Harper likes to wear black. You know who else wears black? Darth Vader. Do you really want Darth Vader running your country?”
* “In 1963, In Dallas, democratic president John F. Kennedy was shot and killed. Where was four year old Stephen Harper? We Don’t Know. He’s not saying. We didn’t make this up”
* “Stephen Harper wants to put a giant laser on the moon. He will use it to burn his initials into Greenland. We’re not making this up, We’re not allowed to make stuff up.”

And I agree more or less with Kraut. I like what Palin stands for – except the abortion stuff. I just don’t think she is electable. Like it or not the MSM destroyed her. She is a laughing stock to 1/2 the country. And you cannot win the presidency with that kind of baggage.

Sadly, my circle includes a lot of liberal Democrats who will vote for Obama again. The women say he looks good with his shirt off, etc. Same problem with Kennedy in 1960.

They don’t care or even believe that Obama is a socialist.

Palin is a populist who has crafted her rhetoric masterfully to match the rise of the Tea Party. As governor she couldn’t resist bashing big business, and did so in reality with the massive oil tax increase in ACES. But big oil wasn’t her only foil. It could be fish processors one week, or BP the next. If look at her statements during the 2008 campaign, bashing greed on Wall Street as the cause of the financial crisis, it fit in well with McCain’s whole progressive Republican approach (at least when it comes to regulating business).

Fiscally, I don’t think Palin is really half bad but she is no conservative in this area either. She cranked up state spending about 20% in her two years because oil prices were rising and revenues were bursting with the new ACES tax regime. Only in her last year, perhaps with an eye on running in 2012, did the budget offered come back down to spending levels in Frank Murkowski’s last year. Of course, the Bridge-to-Nowhere is simply being for the pork before you were against it. Why not say, hey it was a wasteful spending project and I was for it. At least it would be honest.

She rose to fame on anti-corruption and taking on the establishment Republican party. It was well timed with all the FBI indictments coming down at the time. But then as governor she lost all that “rule of law” credibility with the firing of the state chief of police, Walt Monegan, then ignoring the subpoenas from the legislature. She would never come clean and admit an abuse of power. It is always her enemies who are to blame, never her own misjudgments.

She has done a brilliant job of painting herself as the Joan of Arc who will save the Republic. But to do that you have to understand, be committed to, and practice the principles of limited government. I have no confidence she will do that. Sadly, years ago, I did.

AshleyTKing on December 31, 2010 at 11:10 PM

God you are such a big ass liar.

The only true thing you said is you run with a bunch of democrat-communists, and that’s because that’s what you are as well.

You come on here and lie about ACES every time you think you can get away with it.

You know DAMNED GOOD AND WELL that was NOT a tax.

Sarah Palin realized the Alaskan people were being ripped off because some corrupt REPUBLICAN politicians had made a sweetheart deal with Big Oil, and while the price of crude was going through the roof, the price the oil companies were paying Alaska for their oil had barely budged.

Sarah re-negotiated the PURCHASE AGREEMENT by force.

That’s not a tax you ignorant troll, that PRICE PAID for PRODUCT PURCHASED.

By LAW the Alaskan people own the oil, Like ANY stockholder, they get yearly dividends.

Corrupt politicians conspired with Big Oil to rip-off the Alaskan people. As the state’s Chief Executive Officer, Sarah stepped in and said “Bullsh!t! Not on MY watch”

As for Walt Monegan Sarah didn’t fire him, the corrupt bastard QUIT.

Monegan was called on the carpet on numerous occasions because he REFUSED to make the budget cuts Sarah demanded. In fact, he was so determined to keep wasting money, he made an end run around her, went to DC and begged the Alaska congressional caucus to override Palin.

Still, rather than fire the corrupt bastard for insubordination, Palin was going to re-assign him to a position where he could do no harm, and still keep his pension and seniority. It was far more than he deserved, but pissed off, he quit.

Now we all know you are a liar deluxe, but the fact is, Monegan was an AT WILL employee. An appointed position. Sarah could fire him for anything, or nothing at all. He served at the PLEASURE of the Governor. As soon as that crapweasel no longer pleased her, he was done.

Palin needed NO REASON WHATSOEVER to run his ass off!

What other lies do you wanna spread troll? We got the truth to knock it down.

unclesmrgol on January 1, 2011 at 12:25 AM

You are right. She is not sounding as nativist as the Know Nothings. She wins points with me there. I was thinking more of the populist element in that temporary tempest.

I hope the Tea Party focuses on the big domestic threats: creeping socialism, out of control spending, regulation. It is always too easy to take out current frustrations on immigrants, legal or illegal. And the Dems today are all to eager to use them to add to the legions of welfare (Democratic) dependents.

A century and a half ago the Dems were the party for immigrants because they promised basically to leave them alone.

More lies, which is par for you.

You know as well as I do that the Branchflower Report was bullsh!t, and itself was investigated by the real convening authority, the Alaska Personnel Board.

Timothy Petumenos, an independent investigator found Obama’s boys Kim Elton and “Gunny” French even used the WRONG STATUTE to base their with hunt on!

I say Obama’s boys because [as reported at the time by CNN] Obama actually called the state troopers union and offered “assistance” in the matter.

Of course, after the election, Obama paid Kim Elton for a “job well done” by giving him a make work job at the Department of Interior.

Petumenos investigated the entire situation, declared Branchflower wrong. Also, after reviewing all communications, as well as conduction EXTENSIVE interviews,it was determined that Sarah Palin NEVER asked Monegan, or anyone else to fire her brother-in-law, even though the alcoholic POS tazered her sister’s son [his step son] was caught poaching [a SERIOUS offense in Alaska] as well as driving his patrol car drunk on numerous occasions.

Oh, and of course he threatened to kill Sarah’s sister, her dad, and Sarah herself. The dipsh!t is lucky Sarah didn’t end him herself.

BTW, this POS is STILL a state trooper.

One more lie you’ve told that has been thoroughly debunked by Alaska officials.

Oh, and before you whine that Petumenos was “in Sarah’s pocket, he was ALSO the one who took over the Defense Fund BS complaint after it was discovered the first so-called “independent investigator” was employed by Barack Obama’s personal law firm, Perkins-Coie, and had broken the law by releasing fraudulent information about the case.

Remember the big “FBI about to indict Palin” BS, the one the FBI intermediately went public and DENIED, something they NEVER do? Yeah, that’s was Obama’s boy.

Petumenos was the picky bastard who said her trust fund, which was set up by the same people who set up Bill Clinton’s legal fund, violated Alaska law because it had the word “official” in it.

As for ACES, how the hell is it bad to force Big Oil to pay MARKET value for a barrel of oil? Not a tax troll, but market price paid for product purchased.

Give it up liar, you aren’t going to win here.

They weren’t unelectable what we really saw was Goldwater Redux. About 20% of Republicans decided to vote for the other side regardless of the consequences. So we got a communist on the east coast and Reid back in Nevada. Tell me again why I should vote for leftist Republicans when leftist Republicans won’t vote for conservatives. The leftist/statist Republicans screwed the hooch and the party with their snit. GOP RIP.

Yes. All my suspicions have been confirmed about the GOP. I agree with hawkdriver on this. This reality is a biotch. It stems from the simple axiom that bureaucracies by nature can’t help but devolve into and organism which protects its self interests at the system level. Basically when the two opposing sides agree on any matter we are screwed. That is why I much rather prefer grid lock as opposed to the divide and conquer strategies they deploy against us; the proles.

Major blunder on his part. I tough I understood Chuck. I read his views. He writes with a lot of clarity. He seemed solid to me, principle wise–and then he backed Huck.

Lost all his street cred in the process. Yet he is one of a handful of celebs that dare stray from pack in regard to the hollyweird mindset.

Thank You. You are a kind and decent person. We can be civil and disagree. But when the time comes we must unite and–to use Obama’s words; “punish our enemies”.

Its a game of psychological warfare and we must bring decention among their ranks so they will give up all hope and submit to our will. The will of the people.
