Video: Can-do billionaire technocrat not doing so well coping with snow

posted at 5:21 pm on December 28, 2010 by Allahpundit

Say what you will about him, at least the man makes the trains run on time. Or at least he did, until the blizzard hit and passengers started getting trapped on city subway trains for seven hours. I know most of our readers don’t care about NYC politics, but since Bloomberg-bashing is a treasured pastime at HA (especially by me), let’s take a moment to make snow angels in the cold white drifts of his agony. Compare and contrast: Here’s the scene outside Bloomy’s luxe Manhattan townhouse and here’s the scene in the outer boroughs according to angry residents:

“This is impossible,” one Bergen Beach, Brooklyn, resident told WCBS-TV. “I’ve lived on this street for 24 years and never, ever, ever were we not plowed. We’re really frustrated no one on the block, no one in the neighborhood could move.”

“In Brooklyn, we are stranded,” a Brownsville, Brooklyn, resident told WCBS-TV. “We can’t get to work. The buses aren’t running. The L (subway) train isn’t running, and the streets have not been cleaned, not been plowed at all.”

City Councilman Daniel Dromm shook his head and came short of stamping his feet on two feet of unplowed snow on 75th Street in Jackson Heights, Queens.

“The fact that there has been no plow in this neighborhood at all is a disaster,” Dromm told WCBS-TV. “It’s hard to understand why the city was so unprepared for this storm because we knew for a long time that it was coming.”

Bloomberg told reporters the city simply does not have enough tow trucks and crews to dig out the abandoned vehicles, and has been pleading with private companies to help out.

Says Dromm, “I think the mayor must be living in another world if he thinks that the response to this has been satisfactory.” Meanwhile, in Newark, Mayor Cory Booker (a Democrat, alas) is going around digging people’s cars out with his own shovel. Remember, though, Bloomberg’s supposedly the guy whom the media assures us is worth considering for president because, squish or not, he’s just too darned capable to ignore. And by way of background, this isn’t the first time he’s been accused of ignoring a crisis in the outer boroughs. The power went out in parts of Queens for nearly a full week in the summer of 2006 (I remember it only too well) and accusations flew that Mayor Nolabels never would have tolerated it had it happened in Manhattan instead. Some of that reaction is due to eternal outer-borough disgruntlement at being perceived as second-class citizens, but part of it’s also a reaction to Bloomy’s own wealth and privilege. A sneak preview, perhaps, of the national response if he tried to buy himself the White House in 2012 with unemployment near 10 percent.

And yet, and yet, despite it all, at the moment I’m inclined to give him a pass on this. For one thing, as someone who’s lived in the city for almost 30 years, I don’t remember the snow ever being this heavy. There were drifts five feet high in a neighbor’s yard yesterday; even today, some crosswalks are still impassable because the snow’s been piled to neck level in front of them. The snow in some streets is still so deep that I’m not sure a plow could get down them. Which is to say, this isn’t business as usual for NYC. Can’t expect perfection in coping with something that’s virtually unprecedented. The other reason I’m loath to beat up on him is that the left’s whining about Chris Christie being on vacation in Florida while New Jersey digs itself out of the snow — which helps explain gubernatorial aspirant Cory Booker’s quick action — and so hammering Bloomy kinda sorta requires hammering Christie. (Fun fact: Christie’s chief critic on this matter in the New Jersey legislature is himself in Florida right now.) Or does it? True to hackish form, I’ve been searching for reasons why Bloomberg’s response is bad but Christie’s is A-OK. Is it good enough that there haven’t been many complaints about Jersey’s handling of the storm, in stark contrast to the scene in NYC? How about the fact that snow removal is really a local matter, something a mayor is very much needed for but not so much a governor? Help me out here. All theories/excuses welcome.

Two clips for you, one of Bloomy fielding questions and the other of New York sanitation doing their best not to totally destroy an SUV while digging their way out of the snow. Click the first image to watch.

Update: Andy Levy fantasizes: “BREAKING: Mayor Bloomberg to go on ‘Morning Joe’ and blame NYC’s poor blizzard response on hyper-partisanship.”

The voters didn’t give Michael Bilandic a pass when they voted for Jane Byrne as mayor in a landslide in Chicago over the exact same thing.

There are some reasonable explanations why the clean-up is slow, like it was a Holiday weekend, so alternate side of the street parking was not in effect… But don’t look for anyone to give the tool any slack… He’s a TOOL…

phreshone on December 28, 2010 at 5:33 PM

He is toast (or his political career is now on ice, I suppose would be better).

I was living in a Chicago suburb the year Chicago Mayor Mike Bilandic didn’t get the streets of the city plowed, setting up his loss to Jane Byrne in the primary.

People won’t dig out their cars, because they’re entitled to the city workers doing it for them.

City workers won’t do the job, until they recieve quadruple time and a half, because their unions say they’re entitled to it.

And Bloomberg sits on his brain, wondering what else he can tax to pay for it all.

As much as I like bashing ubernanny Bloomie, I can’t do it this time. I think they’re doing all they can.

I live on a county road down at the Jersey shore, and it’s a mess. Is my county inept?

I walked down to a store a few blocks away, and all of the local roads are unplowed. Is the town incompetent too?

There was too much snow and too much wind to get a big jump on the storm… every plowed road needed replowing within the hour. Sometimes Mother Nature wins.

stevieray on December 28, 2010 at 5:40 PM

Allah,

I’ve been living in Queens since since 1982 and I can remember plenty of storms to rival this one. I don’t see what makes this one “unprecedented” in a way that would justify streets not being plowed.

Go ask Ed if they’d even cancel 1 day of school for a storm like this in Minnesota. I doubt it. And it’s not like this is Atlanta, where they don’t get much snow. There’s no excuse for this whatsoever.

We had moved away from the NW suburbs about three years before that Chicago snowfall, but we followed the news accounts. It was a fiasco.

Exit question: Do New Yorkers have the stones to throw out a mayor who doesn’t do what he should be doing? Bloomberg prancing around with his no labels nonsense and this and that bans. Remove the snow.

New Yorkers need to find “the Rent’s too damn high” guy and get him on TV to say that “the snow’s too damn deep!”

The term “RINO” is thrown around haphazardly…now Bloomy, he’s a RINO, using that acronym correctly.

The city is usually very good at getting the snow plowed, etc. Try living in the DC area/city. This same snow fall, side streets would take about a week to get plowed out. So in essence, up here were just so used to efficient removal. And bloomy’s refusal to declare a “Snow Emergency” didn’t help.

For some reason tho, this storm…far from the worst we’ve ever seen…seemed tougher to deal with than it should. Maybe it was the wind involved, creating very deep snow banks as well.

As for those stuck on the trains for hours, with no heat, food, water…there is no excuse. Again, there WAS something different about this snow storm…Metro North trains, for one, were all suspended for most of the next day. I’m sure many others from upstate, LI to Jersey had the same.

I don’t know. I’m in Texas, and this definitely feels like a local thing that I wouldn’t care about if you weren’t in New York. But you are criticizing (albeit lightly) Bloomberg instead of Gov. Paterson. At the very least, it’s consistent.

Up…the morning after, the snow wasn’t totally wet, nor dry and fluffy. Kinda right in the middle, which IS the worst to try to drive on, even with chains on the tires. We’re used to all types of snow, wet and heavy included, unlike…say…out West like Colorado Rockies, where it’s nice and powdery (Cannot wait until I go out again skiing!!).

Totally agreed on the abandoned buses and stalled trains. There is no excuse. The only thing, is that it seemed a lost harder to drive, much less shovel the car out, i this storm. Plus, the plows went all night long, but with the heavy amounts plus those wind gusts all evening, whatever got plowed or shoveled an hour ago, was all filled back in.

So there was no “keeping up” with it.

As for your recalling of the 06 blakout, Bloomie publicly defended ConEds incompetence and no one thought to have the NYPD provide ConEd with info as to which nabes had no power. What happened to NYC? It used to be the home of the tough urban dwellers. Now it’s a friggin nanny state populated with beta-males and self-loathing tools that worship at the Alter of Saint Bloomy. What a bunch of weenies.

BINGO. You nailed it. It used to count for something to live here. It used to be a rough and tumble town. People were actually afraid to come here. Now it’s a city full of transplant metro-sexual pussies. Blows.

make snow angels in the cold white drifts of his agony.

First, that right there is hilarious. Second, my little burg in central VA got hammered not once, not twice, but 3 different times last winter with several feet of snow on each one of them. The city was out sanding before it hit, and out plowing immediately after it hit. Was I stranded? For a time, but I live on a cul-de-sac on the outskirts of town, but still I was able to get out within 24 hours or so. So no, I don’t feel real bad for Bloomy taking some heat. Plus his attitude stinks, it’s almost as if he’s calling people crybabies when they just wanted to be able to get to work.

That’s nothing. I once lost control of my car in a parking lot and hit a parked car. Unfortunately, it was the only car in the parking lot.

Not my finest winter driving moment.

Heh…you can’t escape Murphy’s Law.

Speaking of Bloomy:

NY Post:Gun stash mystery is solved

he was carrying “anti-Bloomberg paraphernalia”

So much for free speech, huh?

Five years ago, durig a big storm, A Dept. of Sanitation plow took of the drivers side of my car, and 5 cars down the block. The City’s response: “Tough”.

Now I live in Northern Westchester, where we get more snow, but the roads are totally passable within an hour or 2 after the storm passes. And these are windy-hilly nightmare roads. Not your nice city grid roads.

Bloomberg doesn’t give a rat’s ass about making the city run. That’s why crime is up, and everything’s going to the crapper.

Iblis on December 28, 2010 at 6:46 PM

Problem is all Governments bought the Global Warming scam.

Who needs to budget for or buy snow plows and all that snow and ice clearing equipment if Global Warming is here and there is no need to have any of that “snow and cold” stuff?

Very true, and as bad as it is NYC, reading EUReferendum about what’s going on in the Britain formerly known as Great is just sad.

jarodea on December 28, 2010 at 6:59 PM

This is worse then the power outage, that had an issue of residents living outside of zoning, with illegal sublets, which would drive the official numbers used for powering out of whack, creating a problem of supplying something for a place that has a larger then official problem.

Bloomberg wanted Broadway to be open. You would think that given what the stage hands make, that they would give a hand and get people to the stage, by cleaning that section. That way the people who work can commute.

The subways are run by a spin-off governmental organization that also runs the commuter trains and buses. What they have done in New York is atrocious, to the point that the entire organization should be disbanded and reformed.

The fact that there are 4 subway lines running to Coney Island and only ONE is currently open should be enough shame for the resignation of the head of the MTA. The fact that the LIRR is still running below schedule, should be reason for the head of the MTA to simply say they screwed up and are unfit for the job.

The layers of government in New York City have failed to function.

man I really cant stand Bloomie.

my family is still snowed in in Queens and the East End of L.I.

I remember being snowed in in Queens in ’77.

People ranted about Koch for years.

Bloomie, Mr Technocrat, cannot manage to do any better 33 yrs later.

The lost commerce will be a pretty big hit.

Those poor people trapped on the subway have my DEEPEST condolences. Good Gawd I cannot imagine, I would have lost my mind. Hell just the daily commute 2 buses, 3 trains, used to wear me down.

Luckily a REPORTER was trapped too so we will hear ALL about it :0>

PS the local township of the Hamptons where my mom is got the roads cleared right away, all those insane Suffolk County and township property taxes paid off in that area at least, but the schools are just stealing $$$ hand over fist IMO,

off topic I just found out reading a Randy Altschuler-R (who just lost to Bishop-Jackaxx, sadly) speech, about how ANY student in NYS who fails the Regents Exams now and therefore cannot get the Regents Diploma is AUTOMATICALLY officially labeled as ‘Special Ed’ and the city then funds the school or whomever for that student at like 250k or something similarly insane, to give them a General Degree as a disabled student.

When the hell did that happen? NYS used to have 3 tracks, Academic (Regents ) Degree, General (which is where those who fail a Regents exam should go and they certainly were not labeled and FUNDED as Special Ed!!), and the Technical one for trades and engineering and such

I bet this is more fallout from the AWFUL NCLB crxp that Dubyah and Teddy gave us. That is when schools became ALL about those who were failing and killed all gifted funding and started teaching DOWN to a test. pathetic.

Man no wonder NY is broke.

okay sorry, back to the Bloomie incompetence :0)

PS AP, Corey Booker D-NJ seems like a pretty good guy, he partnered up with Christie on the CAP thing and schools stuff no?

ginaswo on December 28, 2010 at 7:25 PM

The unfortunate part is there’s really not much anyone can do about/to Bloomberg, unless he decides to run for president and angry New Yorkers can tell people to run away, the way they did when Lindsay made his presidential bid in 1972. Bloomie’s just starting the second year of his four year term on Saturday, so this storm will be a distant memory come 2013. And Lindsay still won re-election in 1969, despite a snowstorm and botched city response that was every bit as bad as this in March of that year.

The MTA is different. It’s controlled by the governor, not the mayor, and Andrew Cuomo can win a few brownie points when he takes over from Patterson this weekend by dismissing MTA chief Jay Waller and a few other top officials, even if nothing actually changes in the agency’s subway, bus and commuter rail operations (and since the ones who want Waller fired the most right now are the transit union officials, Cuomo could actually use the boondoggle to put a more union-friendly suit in there for the upcoming labor contract negotiations).

A. No one outside of I-287 gives a rat’s a$$ about NY.
B. I got a label for the midget billionaire: Nitwit.

So why was there no snow in DC during the northeast blizzard? I blame the lame-duck Congress.

Why are the workers not working hard enough to get the street plowed?
Too-powerful unions.
Why did the clowns in the 2nd video not care even a little bit about destroying that car?
Too-powerful unions.
Why can’t NYC afford to hire enough workers?
Too-powerful unions.
