Congress presses Obama to act on attacks on Christians in Iraq
posted at 1:00 pm on December 27, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
The war in Iraq has mainly been an exercise in partisanship, at least since the presidential election campaign of 2004. Since Barack Obama took office, however, the issue has mainly faded to the background as Republicans and Democrats alike tacitly agreed to support the administration’s decision to abide by the status-of-forces agreement (SOFA) negotiated by George Bush and Nouri al-Maliki in 2008 that will see the bulk of US forces withdraw by the end of next year. However, that schedule has generated further bipartisan agreement that the White House needs to do more in the wake of al-Qaeda attacks on Christians in Iraq to get the Iraqi government to defend the right to freedom of worship:
Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill are fervently pressing the White House to stem mounting attacks on Christians in Iraq. …
Since 2004, 40 Christian churches and institutions have been bombed, according to the Chaldean Assyrian Syriac Council of America, seven alone on the eve of Orthodox Christmas in 2007.
In a recent letter to President Obama, the group warned that the current situation “promises more innocent Christian blood in Iraq, more turmoil in that country, and more shame for America.” …
Before the ouster of Saddam Hussein, there were about 1.4 million Christians in Iraq, comprising about 3 percent of the population, said Eshoo. Today, through a mass exodus and violence that has included a dozen clergy killed or kidnapped, about 400,000 remain.
“The numbers are stunning,” [Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA)] said. “We are really struggling to have the issue taken as seriously as it should be taken.”
The problem Congress sees is that of waning US influence in direct proportion to the withdrawal of troops. The White House has a rapidly-closing window in which to use its leverage to assist the Iraqi Christians; after next year, the US may have less influence than any time since the 1990 invasion of Kuwait to shape the direction of Iraq. Since the attacks, the House passed a resolution condemning the “bloodbath,” and sent letters to Hillary Clinton and the GAO to review funding and protection policies for the “indigenous religious communities” in Iraq, apparently to little avail.
Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA), the co-chair of Eshoo’s Religious Minorities in Iraq Caucus, scolded President Obama for a weak, politically-correct response to the terrorist attacks:
He also criticized the Obama administration for not mentioning “Christian” or “church” in condemning the attack, charging this downplayed the systemic targeting of the faithful.
“The United States strongly condemns this senseless act of hostage taking and violence by terrorists linked to al-Qaeda in Iraq that occurred Sunday in Baghdad killing so many innocent Iraqis,” White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said after the massacre.
“What you’re seeing is the eradication of the Christian community,” Wolf said. “The world has pretty much turned away.”
Wolf says that the White House rarely responds to the concerns of the RMI Caucus, and gets the impression that the issue is “not at the top of the list” with the administration at the moment. If so, Wolf and Eshoo are fighting the clock to get Obama to use what influence remains to stop the eradication of the Christian communities in Iraq. The bipartisan nature of these concerns should have the White House scrambling to get in front of the issue; instead, it appears that no one in the administration has the stomach to challenge Maliki and his government to act with more strength to protect religious freedom. That does not bode well for future management of the US-Iraq relationship.

Muslims attacking Christians? Obambi can’t even acknowledge or say it, much less do something about it.

The stories of the struggles of Iraqi Christians are heartbreaking.
Perhaps our State Department should be asking self-appointed “bridge builders” like Iman Rauf to speak out in solidarity with Iraqi Christians. Dittoes for Mayor Bloomberg and other liberal blowhards of his ilk.

‘Obama Has Underestimated the Frustration in the Country’
“Obama has underestimated the frustration in the country and the power of the Tea Party movement, which gives the prevailing disillusionment a platform and a voice. It is by far the most vibrant political force in America. Obama’s left-of-center coalition, which got young people and intellectuals involved and which appealed to a majority of women, blacks and Latinos, has evaporated into nothing.”
“The new right, though, is on the rise. It sets the agenda. America is facing a shift to the right. The Republicans have already marched in this direction of their own accord, regardless how many Tea Party reactionaries get a seat and a voice in Congress in November. The Democrats and the president have been put totally on the defensive. From now on they will only be able to react, rather than act.”

Obama has done nothing, nothing at all to earn respect here or abroad. There are those who simply refuse to see the man for what a dud he is. I do not know what causes this peculiar blindness but it’s there. Is it because he’s black? Because he’s in the highest office? Because some cannot admit their President is a failure? I just don’t get it. Make no pretense at bring terribly bright or insightful, at least I hope not. But I cannot grasp why, since all the evidence is there for the taking, his failings are not clear as glass to the whole country.

Hillary’s Troubling Silence
November 13, 2010
——————-
Iraq’s 2,000-year-old Christian community is on the brink of extinction, its members targeted by al Qaeda attacks and fleeing abroad. But Hillary Clinton, the one person who could force the Iraq government to act, is keeping her mouth shut.
On Wednesday, al Qaeda militants launch a synchronized bombing attack on 11 Christian communities throughout Iraq, killing six and wounding more than 30. That attack followed on the heels of the ghastly assault last month on Christian worshippers attending a service at Our Lady of Salvation church in Baghdad, in which 58 people were brutally murdered and another 60 wounded.
That is not nearly enough to get the attention of the Iraqi government. What is needed is a firm condemnation by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reacting specifically to al Qaeda’s explicit plans to rid Iraq of its Christian communities and warning the Iraqi government that there will be dire consequences to its continuing inaction on this urgent matter. A number of online petitions have sprung up on the Internet urging Clinton to do just that, but so far there has been no official statement by the U.S. government.

Wow. Lot a folks blaming Obama for this.
Might want to google “Iraq Constitution” and look at the date it was implemented.
It was George, I’ll go skipping hand in hand with the king of Saud, Bush who let the Iraqi’s write a constitution where Islam is the law of the land … Christians be damned.
BowHuntingTexas on December 27, 2010 at 2:07 PM
Not blaming him for this happening, just pointing out that he will not now nor will he ever have, the guts to do anything about it. Well, maybe a strongly worded letter or two, a stirring speech on some media outlet where he will call Muslims ‘the people of Iraq’. He’s one scarey dude that guy!!!
jeanie on December 27, 2010 at 2:13 PM
Every President since FDR has gone skipping hand in hand with the Saudi’s. Plus, unless their constitution specified that it’s ok to slaughter Christians, I’m not sure what your point is.
darwin on December 27, 2010 at 2:21 PM
Don’t disagree with that and I thought it was a bad idea when he let it happen. However, the problem is that the person now in charge is letting this persecution happen without even writing a harshly worded letter.
AZfederalist on December 27, 2010 at 2:26 PM
The only thing scarey about obama(and it’s very scarey)is that he’s willing to break the law, lie through his teeth, bribe anyone with his perks and threats, go behind the back of the American people, manipulate by any means to get what he wants and not get blamed or caught out. I think the word might be ‘crooked’ if one were looking to summarize.
jeanie on December 27, 2010 at 2:36 PM
I guarantee that any efforts to protect Christians in Iraq will be temporary at best. Iraq is at the very least a low-grade theocracy and Christians don’t stand a chance.
Ortzinator on December 27, 2010 at 2:50 PM
Funny how the race is mentioned with crimes against people of dark skin, or religion with Muslims or even sometimes Jews, but concern about whites or Christians … fuggetaboutit.
Paul-Cincy on December 27, 2010 at 2:56 PM
The Left, and this Administration in particular, have gone out of their way as to not offend the “religion of peace” so much so that they won’t even acknowledge that there is a Moslem threat here in the US and across the world.
A few more Christians murdered in Iraq, or Indonesia, or anywhere else by Moslems is not a big deal to the Left. After all, Christians have been murdered since the earliest days of the Current Era, and any Harvard-educated elite will tell you that Christians have apparently murdered “millions upon millions” as they sought to conquer the world over the centuries.
Moslems? Merely misunderstood, frustrated that they’ve so little self-esteem, downtrodden because the West won’t let them establish their caliphate and force Shariah on the rest of the world…
Sure, Obama will make some inane comment, like “We deplore the violence” and that will be that…nothing more.
Did you expect more?
Not from this Administration nor from too many, far too many people who live in fear of offending Moslems.
[Isn't that fear of offending Moslems an indication that Islam is not at all a "religion of peace?"]
coldwarrior on December 27, 2010 at 3:40 PM
A lot of kneejerk, ODS, piling on Obama. Under BUSH’s watch Christians shrunk from 1.4 million to 400,000. What did Bush do (or say) about that specific issue?
What EXACTLY do we propose Obama do? MORE failed Bush-style nation building? Sweet! Let’s hear all the armchair military/political strategists put together their proposal and BUDGET. Let’s hear some solutions, instead of what not to do.
nottakingsides on December 27, 2010 at 4:56 PM
So what, exactly, do they think Obama’s going to do? What do they think Mr. “I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.” (page 261, paperback edition of “The Audacity of Hope.”) will do? The man attacks Christendom, himself, with his speeches, with his legislation. His own words and associations have made it crystal clear that not only is he not a believer in Jesus Christ, but he HATES him, and HATES His Jews. Without a doubt, the biggest enemy of Christendom to occupy the White House since Carter, and they think letters are going to motivate him to do something other than lavish more hatred on Christians and Jews. This is an utterly useless, pointless exercise, and he will not cooperate, as he does not even care about American Christians, much less foreign ones.

Why would we expect Obama to stand up for the Christian community? Even here at HotAir, the silence is almost deafening. 48 comments, yet the post on Obama’s call on Michael Vick has over 100? *sigh* And it isn’t just the Iraqi Christians who are being martyred and persecuted. It is happening all over the world. Of course, after seeing so many self described Christians ignore the plight of the Palestinian Christians in defense of the Secular Israeli State, it should be no surprise.
