Video: The Nativity, digital-age style
posted at 10:24 am on December 25, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Via Fausta, how would the Nativity have unfolded in a digital age? ExcentricPT gives us a peek with this quick and funny look at the story of the birth of Jesus, managed through social media. In the end, though, the medium matters much less than the message. Enjoy, and don’t forget to play Nazareth Farmville.

Ed this is quite tasteless. I’d have expected it from Allahpundit.

I loved it! Avoid Romans — too funny!
John the Libertarian on December 25, 2010 at 10:31 AM
Oh Lighten up gh! It’s pretty funny, not a bit irreverent, and very inventive.
Merry Christmas All!
Markvike on December 25, 2010 at 10:32 AM
Nicely done. Jesus is in everything, so why not the digital era?
Very funny.
Merry Christmas Ed.

Ed, it’s not tasteless. I found it creative and amusing. Someone put a lot of thought into making this little video. I’m a pastor, and would have no problem showing this to the congregation. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, that was priceless!
scalleywag on December 25, 2010 at 10:42 AM
Ok. It was pretty funny. Still tasteless and still something I’d expect from Allah rather than Ed.
gh on December 25, 2010 at 10:47 AM
Not irreverent IMO, and very creative. Thx for posting. Suggestion for next time though – no spoilers on the Farmville joke — saw this a few days ago and that was LOLworthy.

Thanks, Ed, Merry Christmas!

Only criticism I have is that the Magi showed up 2 years later, but I was fantastic.
flytier on December 25, 2010 at 10:51 AM
That was cute & happy-go-lucky, but I like this 21st-century Nativity better because it captures some of the drama of the blessed occasion:

I thought it was cute and I didn’t find it tasteless at all.

I almost spit my coffee out at that one!
A much needed laugh on a hectic morning…and I don’t even have kids.
Cheers, Peace, and Merry Christmas Hot Air!

Carrying the message to millions via alternate media is a great idea and very well done! Watch closely and multiple times the details are easy to miss!

Like.
Also, isn’t entering human circumstances and culture, to bring God’s love tos us, kind of the whole Point of the Incarnation?
Merry Christmas!

Ed, Allah, and all your elves and helpers,
Thanks so much for all your good efforts and keen commentary this past year. I appreciate it very much.
Merry Christmas (Allah, I suspect you still enjoy the season) and Happy New Year to you both!

Loved it, not tasteless at all and posted on my FB page to keep in the spirit! The message of what’s (who is) important on Christmas was loud and clear. Someone must have drunk some bad eggnog last night…

I’ve often wondered why Joseph wasn’t mentioned in the Bible after the childhood of Jesus, and now I know why.
He was playing Farmville all the time.
ExUrbanKevin on December 25, 2010 at 12:54 PM
Ah, the digital age is a wonder.
But they forgot the part where an irresponsible son of a democrat congressman hacks Holy_mary’s email, posts the content online, almost derailing M & J’s engagement, while a host of kind, tolerant & inclusive Lefty blogs ridicule the poor Jewish girl as a tramp and hypocrite, the resultant firestorm requiring the Justice Department to sue Mary for cease and desist based on a complaint filed by the ACLU on behalf of the Freedom from Religion Coalition objecting to Mary offending them with her posts about “Holiness” concerning her flagrante delicto, right before an enraged Islamist, citing most any verse from his religion of perpetual outrage as justification for tracking down the sexually impure couple & bastard child to their tiny hovel in Nazareth, in order to strap on a bomb vest and murder them, because they are immoral.
Other than that, it’s not bad.

Merry Christmas to all – even grinches and trolls!

Don’t you have a Christmas goose to pick up? You’re supposed to be at the Cratchets!

Ahahahaha.
scalleywag on December 25, 2010 at 1:54 PM
Serious question, anyone here ever had goose?
I was thinking about making one this year but settled for chickens instead.

I LOVED both is version and the Facebook version linked to by commenters above. I laughed at the first one, and cried at the second- especially when Jospeh’s friends “unfriend” him when they find out Mary’s pregnant, and the line “He’s sleeping in a manger. It’s all we could find…” That choked me up.
I’ve heard and told this story hundreds of times, but these two updated versions keep the message fresh and relevant. Thanks for sharing it!
“Jesus humbled Himself. He went from commanding angels to sleeping in the straw. From holding stars to clutching Mary’s finger. The palm that held the Universe took the nail of a soldier. Why? Because that’s what love does.”
- Max Lucado
And to Ed, Allah, and all the Hot Air readers: today- may you find His grace amazing once more!

Mmmm hmmm… which is exactly why it happened 2,000 years ago.
It was still cute though.

Reminds me of an alternate-history book where Jesus was born in a sci-fi future. Food for thought.

Ed:
Thanks. While the traditional story vis Bible present the birth of Jesus in the proper historical context providing the difficulties faced by all who participated.
While this piece presents the same event as it very well may have been reported today via current technology. Examining the video in this context it is very thought provoking. Technology has increased the amount and accuracy (trusted sources) to report the same event, its emotion and importance are lost.
Therefore, we should always apply our capacity for critical thinking when viewing historical or other important events via the net, other electronic sources, or print, to assure nothing is lost in translation.
watch how we view historical events via the net and use critical thinking words O I can see that we have advanced could eesof the event s history and the situation

Where were the shepherds? I think they could have done a lot with the angelic announcement and some mobile devices.
Not that I’m a nitpicker or anything…
I lol’d at the Amazon shopping trip. Overall: nicely done!
