Merry Christmas to America’s heroes, past and present

posted at 2:00 pm on December 24, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

No irony, no snark, no wittiness; just a Christmas salute to our men and women in uniform, past and present, wherever they may be. The Republican caucus of the House Oversight and Reform Committee launched this earlier in the week, but politics has nothing to do with it. This comes from all of us on the home front. Have a merry — and safe — Christmas.

Update: Rob Neppell reminds me that this is a good time to remember the work at Spirit of America, too, which lets us share in the work in some small measure of our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. If you’re still in a giving mood, start here.

Ed, thank you for the wonderful post. My father and his three brothers all served in WWII and all came home safely. My uncle received a purple heart from the Battle of the Bulge. They’re all gone now, but every day I’m grateful for the sacrifices that their generation made for me and mine.

Being a “Proud Army Mom” of 2 brave warriors, thank you for all your thoughts and prayers.

My late father spent Christmas 1942, ’43 and ’44 in the Marine Corps. 1943 was on Bougainville.

My brother spent Christmas 1969 at Quan-Tri, South Viet Nam serving in the Army.

To all who have worn the uniform, and all who do so today: Merry Christmas, and Thank You.

Terrye, I wonder if your father in law and my uncle’s paths crossed? He was in the 101st airborne and I remember the stories he told of their feet almost freezing. I so wished I had gotten his stories on video or tape before he passed away.

portlandon on December 24, 2010 at 2:05 PM

I can’t say it any better than that.

Just got my last second gifts bought, a fire in the fireplace, a turkey in the oven, and BIG ol’ glass of wine, sitting in front of my Christmas tree listening to tunes of the season.

And for that, and much, much more, I have those men and women in the war zones to thank. As far as I’m concerned, they are second only to God Himself in deserving the credit. They are in my thoughts and prayers this Christmas/holiday.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you HA-heads too. You make me smile, laugh, scream, facepalm. Love ya all. *raises glass* Cheers, and Peace to you and yours. God Bless!

If you’re reading this Michael, God bless you and keep you safe. We don’t yet know the name of your friend, the fine Marine who gave his life for us this week, but God bless him and his family and help them through this terrible time. Please get well soon and be extra careful until you can come home to us. Semper Fi son.

I see Obama says Merry Christmas and support the troops. He loathes the military and needed to learn how to salute before the election in November. Now he is sprinting toward the center after the election and the media is calling him the come-back kid. Disgusting.
