Video: TSA investigating pilot for posting videos that show security flaws

posted at 10:17 pm on December 23, 2010 by Allahpundit

He’s not in trouble with the airline, but his status as an official federal Flight Deck Officer is in mortal peril.

Three days after he posted a series of six video clips recorded with a cell phone camera at San Francisco International Airport, four federal air marshals and two sheriff’s deputies arrived at his house to confiscate his federally-issued firearm. The pilot recorded that event as well and provided all the video to News10.

At the same time as the federal marshals took the pilot’s gun, a deputy sheriff asked him to surrender his state-issued permit to carry a concealed weapon…

According to the letter, the review was directly related to the discovery by TSA staff of the YouTube videos. “The content and subject of these videos may have violated regulations concerning disclosure of sensitive security information,” the letter said.

The gun was issued to him by the feds pursuant to his status as an FDO, so presumably they’re required to take it back when an investigation is pending. Meanwhile, Drudge is splashing this with a banner headline about Napolitano punishing the guy for merely being “critical of TSA,” but I don’t know how he can be so sure. It depends on what’s in the clips, which have since been made private on YouTube. If he violated the regs by putting something on film that might inadvertently show a bad guy how to get through, thereby creating a security risk, what are they supposed to do while they’re (hopefully) figuring out a way to eliminate that risk? Shrug it off and hope that no one with bad intentions finds the clip? It’s not clear here either whether this guy approached anyone at TSA with his concerns first or whether he took care to make sure there was nothing in the vids that might expose any security holes. It reminds me a bit of Wikileaks, actually. Which is not to say that Drudge isn’t right — maybe this really is all about TSA trying to protect its image by silencing a whistleblower — but I wouldn’t jump to conclusions just because the agency is usually (very) unsympathetic.

Update: I’ve got a feeling that even a cautious semi-defense of TSA won’t play well with readers, so I’ve added a second clip below to smooth things over. It’s seasonal, too!

You can’t help but feel Obama has his priorities screwed up.

If this had happened under Bush….liberals would be screaming “police state” from the top of their lungs and hollywood would incorporate this in TV and Movie dramas 24/7.

Barry likes to bully Americans through his minions and to publicly showcase how wingnuts (ordinary citizens) who defy his government will be punished. That’s priority number one.

To Barry, Ass-ange is this romantic European figure who’s only marginally annoying. Besides, Ass-ange made the US, and especially Hillary, look bad, which Barry really loved.

MeatHeadinCA on December 23, 2010 at 11:23 PM

I was replying to his point about the difference between the administration’s response to perceived threats ….not local air port security.

It has been pretty well documented that not only have the wiki-leaks disclosures caused many diplomatic problems….they have put many lives in danger, especially for our informants in Afghanistan.

Obama’s response to this could be compared to a wet noodle at best.

This pilot catches some video in a public airport and he receives a full court press from big Sis.

The Obama administration is sending some serious mixed messages which calls their motives into question.

Exactly.

This is why Obama can call his political opponents “the enemy” but can’t refer to an islamic radical as a terrorist.

It’s all about furthering his agenda.

We saw this same mentality when Napalataino issued her threat assessment in 09 that centered around “right wing extremist and anti-abortion protesters while ignoring the people who were actually engaging in violent acts like left-wing extremist. She had to withdraw the report it was so pathetic.

We had a reporter arrested in Colorado simply for taking pictures of people that attended a democratic planning and funding meeting in a public hotel.

We had a Justice official that was fired (I believe he was reinstated later on) because he was blowing the cover of an Obama ally in the Sacramento government(I think he was the mayor but not sure).

This corruption is nothing new for democrats.

Byron York wrote numerous columns on it. Gerald Walpin speaks: The inside story of the AmeriCorps firing Read more at the Washington Examiner:

Top executives at the Corporation, Walpin explained in an hour-long interview Saturday, were unhappy with his investigation into the misuse of AmeriCorps funds by Kevin Johnson, the former NBA star who is now mayor of Sacramento, California and a prominent supporter of President Obama.

Unfortunately, a judge dismissed Walpin’s wrongful termination lawsuit in June 2010.

Walpin defeat means president can fire IGs at will

Y’all keep your eyes peeled for any kind of breaking news out of south Louisiana. Something BIG just blew up 5 minutes ago away to the Southwest of Lafayette. Sounded like either a refinery or oil rig blew up or an airliner crashed.

Loud roar, much like the roar the last UPS jet of the night makes at 11 p.m. daily. Then a big double thud – concussive – slightly shook the house.

Went out back in the dark and most of the southern horizon was lit up 1/3 of the way to zenith with a bright orange glow. A loud rushing noise like a plane/train continued for 30 seconds. The light continued for 45 seconds then died.

This was quite a distance from my house near Lafayette.

I don’t know what it was, but that was a very large, sustained explosion just now.

I noted this at Boston Logan 6 years ago, called and spoke to both airport ans airline security about it.

At one checkpoint, everyone EXCEPT concession suppliers with large hand trucks had to go through the scanner. All the boxes on the truck were scanned, but the truck was not! Nor did they look UNDERNEATH the truck!!!

Handy place to hide stuff – underneath a large hand truck that doesn’t get looked at.

winston on December 24, 2010 at 4:27 AM

I had access to all of the videos but only looked at a couple.

The pilot was showing the TSA checkpoint, where pilots and flight attendants were standing in line waiting for their daily grope/scan.

He turns slowly around to show baggage handlers, mechanics, etc. walking along the wall and using their ID’s to swipe open the locked door that goes directly onto the airfield.

No grope for them.

Knucklehead on December 23, 2010 at 10:39 PM

Sounds to me like a clear and blatant violation of the Whistleblower Protection Act of 1989.

Of course, laws are for the little civilian people, not for our federal Overlords. They cannot violate the law, they ARE the law (like Judge Dred).

Hey, thats a nice pilots’ license you got there…be a shame if something should happen to it.

Jackboots. But that’s the only boot that ever fits the Left.

I’m curious how the sheriff justified revoking the pilot’s concealed carry permit. Has he committed a crime? Permits are not a privilege to be granted or revoked at the whim of the authorities, and his disfavor with the TSA doesn’t seem like it has anything to do with his concealed carry status.

And even if he was filming in areas out of public view, his point was that essentially anybody can have nearly unrestricted access to those very same areas already. You can’t let unscreened baggage handlers and ground crew wander around at will while claiming that these same areas are too “sensitive” to ever be seen by the public.

GalosGann on December 24, 2010 at 11:34 AM

Cheezit crackers, Allahpundit.

The guy filmed, from all reports, security “holes” that are already public knowledge. The only possible hook to hang “divulging secrets” is showing exact locations within planes and airports of these knows things.

He showed checkpoints, to be sure. He showed people needing nothing but a card to enter specific checkpoints.

He showed the terrible weapon (axe) and where it is located in the cockpit.

I have read no reports of this, but he might have commented on statistics of “contraband” getting through security and easy ways to accomplish it.

Also, no big state secret to anyone but TSA, whose money and importance – its reason to exist in its present form – very much depends on them sustaining the illusion that their procedures are sufficiently necessary and effective at stopping terror attacks.

Instead, the pilot reveals, for all to see, harsh criticism backed with “look at this with your own eyes” evidence, and this is what has TSA pulling out whatever stops they can to discipline him and make sure no one else criticises them in similar fashion.

Yes he showed checkpoints and the backdoor workarounds – the card wipes, etc. that put the lie to any illusion of TSA measures being an hard hurdle for determined terrorists.

If that is your idea of a “security breach” – destroying illusions – then I WANT THAT SECURITY BREACH.

I want TSA replaced with people that can make sense and think.

Please, by all means, make the case that this makes a terrorists job easier.
Then I will laugh heartily.

Found out what the big explosion was last night, south of Lafayette, Louisiana:

http://www.katc.com/news/breaking-news-this-morning-major-explosion-in-youngsville/

Dang, that was freaky! A big compressor at a gas company blew up – blew the roof off the building – fire in the sky – a hairy night for locals!!!

Video at the above link – doesn’t do it justice. Reading the comments, I agree – thought maybe the world was coming to an end!~

Ap- not sure if anyone mentioned it in the comments, but have you seen the response from the pilot? It doesn’t seem to jive with the idea that he posted some serious flaw that the TSA would have preferred not be exposed- since the news report has described it in pretty plain language.

Also, why would resigning his FFDO close the case if this was a serious breech of -whatever- on the part of the pilot? It looks like a clear case of punishment to me.

This is the typical reaction of the incompetent — when shown to be in error or screwing up, they ATTACK the person who exposed them. They will spend all their energy protecting themselves as opposed to doing their job…because they CAN’T DO THEIR JOB!!

“The content and subject of these videos may have violated regulations concerning disclosure of sensitive security information,” the letter said.

May.

Meaning “we don’t know if a crime or any violation has actually been committed, nor have we charged or found the pilot guilty of any offense. But we will be ignoring the concept of due process and the presumption of innocence, and begin executing the penalties right away, for the children and to create jobs.”

New TSA rule: No audio/video recording devices will be allowed anywhere TSA performs its functions. Since TSA has national obligations, all video/audio devices are hereby outlawed and must be turned over to law enforcement by COB Dec 25, 2010. Penalty for non-compliance will result in in-definite detention at your nearest GITMO center.

BobMbx on December 24, 2010 at 1:12 PM

Ap- I missed the second link in your post- obviously you did see the pilot’s response. And yet you’re still on the fence about Drudge’s angle?

Meanwhile………………………..

“Yes, that’s a burka, yes that’s a real TSA agent, (I saw her badge when I passed her and made a U-turn to snap a pic)… They’re not just stripping us of our freedoms, they’re rubbing our noses in it along the way.”

Dude! Heluva pic! I wonder why it didn’t get disseminated by the Mainstream Media? *crickets*

On a serious note, because of your TSA-Thug-In-A-Burkha Pic, if I wuz you I would go back and delete anything online that indicates who you are and where you live.

Dollars to donuts you’re door is going to be kicked in @ 3am by jackbooted Gummint thugs bellowing “We’re from the Gummint and we’re here to help!”, as they shoot your vicious, snarling miniature dachshund in self-defense.

This whole card-swiping thing reminds me of a great Christmas Eve joke:

One time, a Christian, a Jew and a Muslim working for an airline as a baggage handler were at a ti**y bar on Christmas Eve. This gorgeous stripper comes over and starts shaking her booty in their faces. The Christian says, “wow, she’s gorgeous!” and licks a twenty dollar bill and slaps it on her left cheek. Not to be outdone, the Jew licks a twenty dollar bill, yells “oh my, isn’t she lovely!” and slaps his bill on her right butt cheek. The Muslim baggage handler looks to his right, looks to his left, yells “Allahu akhbar! Death to infidels!”, swipes his baggage handler ID card down her buttcrack and takes both twenties!

Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas!
