Quotes of the day

posted at 10:40 pm on December 20, 2010 by Allahpundit

“Advocates are advising military gays to stay in the closet for now, as the Pentagon begins months of scene-setting to make sure removing the ban does not hurt combat readiness.

“Once President Obama signs the gay-ban repeal, passed by Congress last week, it will trigger a new phase that will see the Pentagon dictate to commanders how to prepare troops for the historic social change…

“‘The bottom line, for now, gay, lesbian and bisexual service members must remain cautiously closeted,’ said Trevor Thomas, spokesman for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, a leader in the campaign to end the ban. ‘Even with this historic vote, service members must continue to serve in silence until repeal is final.’”

***
“As gay people around the country reveled on Sunday in the historic Senate vote to repeal ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’ a liberal media watchdog group said it planned to announce on Monday that it was setting up a “communications war room for gay equality” in an effort to win the movement’s next and biggest battle: for a right to same-sex marriage.

“The new group, Equality Matters, grew out of Media Matters, an organization backed by wealthy liberal donors — including prominent gay philanthropists — that has staked its claim in Washington punditry with aggressive attacks on Fox News and conservative commentators like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck…

“For the gay rights movement, the right to marry is the holy grail, because so many other benefits — including Social Security and health benefits for gay partners, adoption rights, tax benefits and others — flow from it…

“I think the lesson we have learned over the last two years is that you’ve got to be tough,’ Mr. Mixner said, ‘and you’ve got to keep people’s feet to the fire.’”

***
Polls show the public is broadly supportive of equal rights for gay men and lesbians on several issues — with the exception of the right to marry. The vast majority of Americans, nearly 90 percent, favor equality of opportunity in the workplace. More than 60 percent favored overturning ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ — a figure that has stood steady at least since 2005, according to the Gallup Organization, which tracks public sentiment on gay rights…

“‘There have been enormous and important shifts in public attitudes, and those are a hopeful sign,’ said Tobias B. Wolff, a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania who advises the Obama White House on gay rights issues. But Mr. Wolff speaks of a ‘political gay panic,’ saying, ‘Even when the public is so strongly behind equality, so strongly behind the right thing, politicians are hyper-cautious.’…

“Conservatives are dismayed.

“‘The other side is winning the war on words and the rhetoric,’ said Tom McClusky, senior vice president of Family Research Council Action, the legislative arm of the conservative advocacy group. ‘Generationally, this is an uphill battle for us, and we realize that.’”

***
“As President Obama and his speechwriters prepare for his upcoming State of the Union address, here’s a modest suggestion:

“When you take the victory lap you are entitled to for ending the prohibition on gays serving openly in the military, follow up with a call to end the remaining discrimination faced by members of our military—the second-class status of Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) cadets on some of our leading college campuses…

“Jimmy LaSalvia, executive director of the gay conservative organization GOProud, puts it this way: ‘Throughout the debate over Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, advocates of repeal like President Obama often and rightfully pointed out that repeal was in the best interest of our military and our national security. If President Obama and liberals in Congress are serious about a commitment to ending policies that damage our military, now is the time for them to ensure that ROTC is welcomed back to campus—and that its cadets enjoy all the rights and privileges of any other student organization.’”

Interesting that Progressives aren’t to happy
with their own,on DADT!
========================

DADT Repeal, Senator Manchin, and the Misguided “No Labels” Approach

The problem is that this approach has little grounding in reality. And Senator Manchin’s no-show performance on the historic Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repeal is a perfect example of what is wrong with the “No Labels” concept. In particular, the problem is that many policy questions – such as whether to keep or repeal DADT – have a right answer and a wrong answer. Yet No Labels does not offer any answer, as Senator Manchin showed. In fact, the group admits as much, stating on their website that they are leaving social issues “to a separate debate.” But what good is an approach to politics and policy that cannot offer a position on critical issues of fairness and equality? No Labels might want to leave things like DADT repeal to a “separate debate” (perhaps occuring at Senator Manchin’s family holiday party?) but LGBT Americans in the military cannot afford to do so.

Put the Labels Aside. Do What’s Best for America.
We are Democrats, Republicans, and Independents who are united in the belief that we do not have to give up our labels, merely put them aside to do what’s best for America.

The UN is irrelevant.

It’s a waste of money and talk. It has done more harm than good and it doesn’t promote the greater good of humanity.
Immoral and corrupt, the UN is nothing more than a wimpish shake-down artist. Just like Al and Jessie!

If we were to just stop funding them, and tell them all to take a hike, then maybe we’d see some rational thinking.

United Numbnuts, is an apt name.

What’s interesting is the timing of “No Labels”.

Conservatives win big in the last election, and now we’re being told that we have to “get along”, we have to “compromise”, we have to “see the larger picture”, as specified by the liberal standards. They lost, WE WON!

To coin a phrase.

Bullied and shamed into thinking we are not socially responsible to their standards, we are told. It’s like listening to Charles Krauthammer telling me he’s in charge and I should eat at the kids table and not with the adults.

That’s Right Charles, “Obama’s the Come Back Kid“, thanks for the help jerk.

I’m really tempted to rant on a episode of the Eastenders, but that’s for another time. I just like your blog and screen name.

Gay’s have served our country. Honorably! There’s no doubt about that.

Your question intrigues me also. If the desire is to serve your country, then why make your sexuality an issue?

It has been said, particularly by liberals, that the Military is a Socialist organization. That’s True!

However, discipline among the ranks must be consistent, otherwise, you have a military draft to fill the quota, and then you lose cohesiveness. That neither benefits the militia, nor the country.

It only leads to decline.

I just hate the idea of using the military as some sort of social science lab experiment. What are they going to do if it turns out that this does adversely affect military effectiveness? Reinstate DADT? It’ll never happen. I can’t wait for 2012!

Cindy Munford on December 21, 2010 at 7:10 AM

Excerpt from an article I saw that made an important point:

A special Defense Department working group appointed by Defense Secretary Robert Gates has recommended that the military should “expressly prohibit” heterosexuals from using separate showers, bathrooms and bunking facilities from homosexuals when the repeal of the law banning homosexuals from the military goes into effect.

The working group also has recommended that commanding officers be left with the authority to exempt individuals from using the same showers, bathrooms and living facilities as homosexuals, but only on a “case-by-case” basis. These are the kinds of issues that military officers will now have to spend their time and energy dealing with, thanks to the Democratic Party and eight Republican senators.

Who knew that Bill Clinton was such a huge bigot to put these gays in the closet. What is wrong with sharing a gas mask with someone with aides?

This is from an old article by Robert Reilly in National Review:

According to Jeffrey Levi, former executive director for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, “We (homosexuals)_ are no longer seeking just a right to privacy and a right to protection from wrong. We have a right – as heterosexuals have already – to see government and society affirm our lives.” Since only the act of sodomy differentiates an active homosexual from a heterosexual, homosexuals want “government and society” to affirm that sodomy is morally equivalent to the marital act. “Coming out of the closet” can only mean an assent on the level of moral principle to what would otherwise be considered morally disordered.
And so it must be. If you are going to center your public life on the private act of sodomy, you had better transform sodomy into a highly moral act. If sodomy is a moral disorder, it cannot be legitimately advanced on the legal or civil level. On the other hand, if it is a highly moral act, it should serve as the basis for marriage, family (adoption), and community. As a moral act, sodomy should be normative. If it is normative, it should be taught in our schools as a standard. In fact, homosexuality should be hieratic: active homosexuals should be ordained as priests. All of this is happening. It was predictable. The homosexual cause moved naturally from a plea for tolerance to cultural conquest. How successful that conquest has been can be seen in the poverty of the rhetoric of its opponents. In supporting the Defense of Marriage Act, the best one congressman could do was to say, “America is not yet ready for homosexual marriage,” as if we simply need a decent interval to adjust ourselves to its inevitable arrival.
The homosexual rationalization is so successful that even the campaign against AIDS is part of it, with its message that “everyone is at risk.” If everyone is at risk, the disease cannot be related to specific behavior. Yet homosexual acts are the single greatest risk factor in catching AIDS. This unpleasant fact invites unwelcome attention to the nature of homosexual acts, so it must be ignored.

If the Romans understood the importance of man woman marriage 2000 years ago, why can’t we?
Are we so vain as to think we’ve evolved past basic societal needs and morals?

The Romans also “understood the importance” of imperialism, crucifixion, public, celebrated torture, slavery, and gender inequality. I don’t want to go back to those things. Societies evolve. That is good news!
