Poll of eight states: Romney trails other major presidential contenders among conservatives

posted at 6:51 pm on December 20, 2010 by Allahpundit

Actually, that’s overstating it slightly: He does okay in his pop’s home state of Michigan, and he manages to eke past Gingrich for third place in some metrics in Wisconsin, but in the other six — including bellwethers like Ohio, Missouri, and North Carolina — he’s fourth out of four. By a country mile, in some cases.

We’ve polled eight states, not including Massachusetts, since the 2010 election ended. Romney has the lowest favorability rating of the Republican top 4 with conservatives in every single one of those states except Michigan, where he probably benefits from his dad having been the Governor. And it’s not like Romney is just slightly less well liked than the others with conservatives- it’s a large gap, particularly when you compare him with Palin or Huckabee. Romney’s average favorability is 58%. Gingrich is next worst at 64%, followed by Huckabee at 73%, and Palin does best at 77%…

And because conservatives make up the lion’s share of Republican primary voters, it should come as no surprise that his issues with them are now leading to poor numbers for him overall in these early snapshots. Of the last eight states we’ve polled Romney has led in only one- Michigan- and even there he could only salvage a tie with Huckabee. Huckabee has led in four states overall with Palin ahead in three and Tim Pawlenty ahead in his home state. Romney’s average performance has been 15% with Gingrich at 16%, Palin at 20%, and Huckabee at 21%.

Palin leads the field among conservatives in all eight states, 22/21 over Huckabee, with Gingrich third at 15 percent and Romney fourth at 14 percent. Check out his numbers in Ohio, Virginia, and North Carolina, especially — bearing in mind that as Palin, Huck, and/or Newt start to fade earlier in the primaries, their conservative supporters are likely to consolidate behind whoever’s left in that group of three, making Romney’s task even more difficult.

He’ll look at those numbers and murmur to himself “McCain, McCain, McCain” as a reminder of how powerless grassroots conservatives can be to stop RINOs in a primary, but that analogy doesn’t hold. Partly because of his immigration stance and partly because of his media-friendly sanctimony towards the right, Maverick was even more widely despised by the base than Mitt is, I think, notwithstanding the latter’s health-care apostasy. But he was (more or less) acceptable anyway as a nominee given that (a) there were no conservative rock stars in the field to provide a clear contrast and (b) with Bush’s approval so low and Republicans in such disfavor, a centrist nominee could be sold as the last, best chance to hold the middle and keep the White House. In 2012, by contrast, you’ll have Palin running and (maybe) Pence and a Mike Huckabee who’s much more widely known and who’s spent two years framing himself as a hardline fiscal conservative. And you’ll have a Republican base that’s fresh off a midterm landslide and anxious to go on offense against a weakened Obama, which means they’ll be less willing to settle for a moderate deemed untrustworthy even by some centrists who might otherwise sympathize with him. The GOP hasn’t nominated a “true conservative” since Reagan (Dubya, avatar of “compassionate conservatism,” hardly qualifies despite the left’s demonization of him); many grassroots believers will be thinking, “if not now, when”? Why settle for Bob Dole when you might have a shot to nominate Goldwater?

All Mitt can do, I guess, is (a) hope that Palin’s negatives stay high and scare off GOP fencesitters on the electability question, (b) quietly lobby for GOP primaries in blue states to be winner-take-all instead of proportional, and (c) do whatever he can to make sure that states run closed primaries instead of open ones. I know that last part is counterintuitive — wouldn’t Romney benefit from centrist independents being able to vote for him? — but Democrats are so eager to face Palin in the general that I think PPP’s right about them perpetrating a little “Operation Chaos” of their own. There won’t be any Democratic contest to vote in, so if you’re a liberal who thinks Obama will walk all over Sarahcuda, why not cross over and vote for her in the GOP primary if you’re allowed?

tigerlily, you seem to be so upset about posters bringing up previous things. Why? Is there a law here against it? Ever since the beginning of this site that’s what posters do. If “X” poster acts like a “Paulbot” on one thread, he’s called that in the next, whether he’s there or not. Happens on both sides. Basilsbeast called me “hysterical” in one thread and the next time he saw me, called me that again. That’s what has always happened here. So what. How many threads here used to guess how long before Nutterboy would show up even before he did or guess what crr6 will say even before he’s posted? It’s how it goes.

I’m really scratching my head here. Weren’t you the one that was upset because you had been unfairly attacked. You found the attacks unjust or something along those lines?

Now you justify the “usual bad behavior” because everyone does it?

This is not only not fair … it’s downright confusing. Come on and complain about people ganging up on you … but then point out that ganging up is normal and that’s just how this site works and if someone has a problem with it, they should just realize this is how it always is. Huh?

What I meant by it’s “what always happens here”, is that it’s usual for trolls like crr6 to be treated that way. Jenfidel, gary, etc. have acted like trolls and are being being called on it. No surprise.

What is unusual is Jen, gary, etc. calling fellow conservatives trolls. That’s what I complain about. Thankfully, most posters save that for the real ones.

A troll is a troll whether they call themselves “conservatives” or not.
A serious doubt exists as to whether or not you are an actual conservative.
IMO, there’s no one who can call themselves a genuine conservative who could pick at a real conservative who has walked the walk as well as talked the talk like Sarah Palin.
Criticize her for policy positions if you can and her record, and not the way she raises her kids or her hairdo or how her “awful” supporters turn you off to her, but you cannot.

I don’t think Mittens has a chance – but not because of these polls.

His numbers, my prediction here, will really tank when the debates begin and he’s forced to defend RomneyCare.

Palin’s numbers – well they won’t hold if she doesn’t do well in the debates. If she does, and I believe she will, she will walk away with the nomination.

Mitt Romney hasn’t been debating – nor has he been busy writing too many OpEds. I suppose his plan is to come charging out of the telephone booth with a red cape on at the very last minute – but I don’t think Mitt Romney is “Superman”.

However – “RomneyCare” is his “Kryptonite”.

I voted for Romney over McCain in the 2008 primary-not that it made a difference by the time the Illinois primaries hit-but I can’t pull the lever-primary wise-for him again.

He seems like a nice guy…a mensch-but Romney-care is toxic to me.
I also don’t want Newt, Huck, and definitely NOT RP.

annoyinglittletwerp on December 21, 2010 at 10:34 AM

Truth be told, if DeMint doesn’t run, my first pick will be SP, at the moment.

Having said that, I want to hear the sides and platforms of all Candidates during the debates.

In short, I want to hear Romney defend/deny/ask forgiveness his Romneycare. Then I will weigh in. RomneyCare will definitely be a big big minus to me, depending on how Romney will defend or absolve himself.

But to all Republicans: STOP SPEWING DIRTS ON EACH OTHER.

I took the time to thoughfully engage you on an adult, Catholic to Catholic level last night. From your defiant, even smug (“heh”, “welcome my fellow gangsters”) reaction, it appears that you have decided not to engage me in kind. Does your faith not apply on the internet? Unless you are trying to tell me that your behavior is appropriate, even holy and edifying to all who hear you. Tell me that, if you can.

I engaged you, altwerp, hoping that you would be mature and reflective enough to KNOCK IT OFF and be the one to influence the others to do likewise, for the sanity of everyone else you are subjecting your vendetta to. However, your replies and posts today indicate that you are not leading, just a following. knucklehead is alpha to your beta. But being alpha in a gang like yours really doesn’t count as true alpha, though, so, let’s not go overboard here.

And just before the Holy Night, I would like to Congratulate you for digging your heels in on your manufactured principle, consisting of hateful, holding-your-grudge-tight, unforgiving behavior. But you’ve got that covered because you have justified it with the old (or should I say very young, somewhere from three to thirteen years old) ,“they did it first, so they deserve the same thing; I can do what I condemn in others!” defense. Have I got that right? Hmmm. So, the behavior you condemn is the behavior (name calling, insults) that you can engage in? Hmmm. I wonder where that is taught. Maybe you can find it in the Gospels or the Catechism for me.

Yes, this kind of ugliness is really lovely, especially right before Christmas. Will you be celebrating the arrival of the Prince of Peace? Do you think He’ll be able to reign with you even here, on HA, or will you continue to throw down your gauntlet of war and retribution, claiming defense when you are initiating the insults. That makes you offensive, fyi. And you are actually proud of yourself for this, and claim that your behavior is “lady like”. Really.

And if you actually believe what you write, that you never pull out the insults first, you’re the only one that believes it. It is memorialized in writing. You regularly, either directly to your targets, or indirectly among yourselves, engage your little gang, vomiting your endless needling, insulting and spoiling for a fight, long before your intended targets have engaged you, or even shown up on a thread, or have left the thread. You had better go back and read your own posts, starting with the one from two or three nights back where the thread was so decimated by you all that all that was left were you and your boss; you offering to bring brownies to your boss and your boss telling you to forget, she’s on a diet. A flame war and then that bracing dialogue. Not what the majority of folks come here for.

And I’m not making empty threats. If you keep thinking you’re going to “flame mob” these threads, I am saving them. I’ll talk to Ed and Allah, send them the evidence and alert them to listen in and monitor when it starts again. I’m perfectly happy in having them handle the situation. And don’t worry about gary and jen. If they decide that your weeks long, thread hopping, gang flame wars are worth their time, then a pox on both your houses. But the fact is, I have seen an effort from gary and jen to pull back from name calling, even in the face of your baiting. I have seen he and jen try to ignore your constant spoiling for a fight. For example, he made an effort to answer you thoughtfully and civilly last night re: your post on Gov. Jindal, even though he held a differing opinion. His intellectual firepower is formidible and his posts, sans name calling, are challenging and interesting, imo. However, you conveniently ignored him. Why couldn’t you engage back civilly? Are you determined to be only hostile? And again, why don’t you engage jen and gary and try to work out your problems; why not try to forge a new and better path?????

tigerlily on December 21, 2010 at 4:42 PM

tigerlily, your threats are empty not beause I don’t think you will alert Ed and Allah, but because I’m not the least worried that Ed or Allah will ban anyone of this supposed “gang”. I would love to see your “evidence” of what you must think ban-worthy behaviour. From re-reading this whole thread early this morning every one of the “gang” (that exists only in your mind) was polite throughout. This thread was no where near as heated as other recent ones.

Also, you seem so upset about past things being brought up in current threads, but that’s exactly what you did by ranting about past threads where you claim thread-jacking was done by this supposed “gang”. Again, past things do get brought up (even pg 1 here by portlandon where he joked about Chudi). Big deal. But to complain about it and then do it yourself is odd. I’m really interested in your “evidence” though which you must believe is “miserable” “disgusting” and “sickening” because I’ve not seen it. You’ve really jumped the shark here.

One last thing: you need to read more about Aslan since it doesn’t look like you know Him very well. Aslan is very much about defending Himself (you see what He Himself does to the White Witch after His resurrection?) and encourages His armies to defend themselves, too.

You either miss the point completely because you want to or you don’t get it. I can’t be any clearer, but you continue to manufacture straw men. My complaint is not about this thread specifically, the insults were here but could have been worse, as you admit you all have been in other threads.

The problem is, as I have written ad infinitum, your constant, (pre, during and after your targets leave a thread), harping, insulting, denigrating and carrying on until my stomach turns. Obviously, this behavior is normal to you. Well, to mature adults, it is not.

Just because you just don’t like certain people you think we all have to be subjected to your hating and “defending yourself” which is really offensive baiting and fight picking. No we don’t. We don’t have to be subjected to your crap which spreads itself over time and threads.

And I don’t wish to see anyone banned. I wish to see some semblance of civility, forbearance, forgiveness, self-control (a fruit of the Spirit) and practice of Christian virtue by those who claim they follow Him.

Do you know the Scripture passage, I think it’s St. Paul, “Let nothing evil pass your lips, say only the good things that lift others up…” I don’t recall he said to get nasty and insulting and keep it up as long as you want because others have insulted you and you should pay them back, but good. In fact, Jesus taught that there was no grace or growth or favor in His eyes when you treat others well who treat you well, because that’s easy, “even the tax collectors can do that”, it’s only tough to be Christian to those who don’t treat you well. I’m not saying not to tell someone that their speech is offensive, I am saying it’s how you do it, and it is NOT the gang-up, safety in numbers, keep it going forever, offend them whenever possible, method you have chosen.

As far as knowing what Aslan did to the White Witch, no, I can’t say I remember, having read those books long ago. And I hope you don’t base your actions and beliefs on Aslan or what he might do in the land of Narnia. You should consider that C.S. Lewis wrote those books as an allegory; an imaginative, well written Christian allegory, yes, but not to be taken literally as an instruction on how to live a Christian life, nor to encourage people to think of Aslan as in parity with Jesus Christ or Scriptural instruction. I don’t think about Aslan at all, to tell you the truth. I think about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. When I asked you what Aslan would say in a previous post, you may not have realized I was asking you to go past a fictional book character and go to Christ.

P.S. have you read the Srewtape Letters? That’s more descriptive of what’s going on around here.

tigerlily on December 21, 2010 at 6:18 PM

P.S. I think my suspicion that you have taken your Aslan thing a little too far is born out in the fact that when you use the personal prounoun when referring to Aslan, you capitalize it as you did here:

One last thing: you need to read more about Aslan since it doesn’t look like you know Him very well. Aslan is very much about defending Himself (you see what He Himself does to the White Witch after His resurrection?) and encourages His armies to defend themselves, too.

Aslans Girl on December 21, 2010 at 5:37 PM

The only time caps are to be used with the pronoun “him” is in reference to the Father, Son or Holy Spirit. It seems that you have decided that Aslan and his exploits are interchageable/one and the same with the Person and life of Jesus Christ. Now I think I have fallen down the rabbit hole.

Jenfidel didn’t hijack the thread with one comment. She has made it known that she doesn’t care for Mormonism. It’s a free country and I thought pc wasn’t welcome around here. I don’t necessarily agree with jen, but I don’t feel I need to post about it. If you disagree, and feel strongly enough to post about it, why don’t tell her you disagree and then forget it.

btw, are you Mormon or just indignantly indignant that another religion is disliked? Because there have been entire threads overflowing with anti-Catholic hate, and I don’t recall you going on a crusade to stop it, or to suggest that the anti-Catholic bigots who have ranted on HA with truly vile, disgusting slanders and almost pornographic hate should be banned. If I’m wrong about that, please show me. And as a Catholic, when I see this anti-Catholic hate being posted, I usually ignore it. Completely. Not worth my time. Maybe if you feel the same way you should ignore jen.

But you know, you sly little thing you, I think that you’re pretending to be indignant and sanctimonious about Mormonism just so you can add it to your growing list of reasons to hate jenfidel and strike out whenever you can. Anti-Mormonism is a good one, huh? Bet you thought no one would ever be able to stop you from going on the attack with the old, “I’m going after a bigot cover” working for you. But you see, you left your rump exposed. In order to cover it, I’ll expect from you a very vigorous prosecution of the anti-Catholic bigots when they get going on this site. I’ll be looking for that rock solid defense, buy danish, cause that’s just me.

I really like this one where Gary equates some of us as possible murderers.

I could look for the link where “unseen” equates us so called “haters” with possibly having something to do with the burning down of Sara Palin’s church, but this should keep you busy for a while.

I saw that and it’s tame compared to what that turd has called me and anyone else who doesn’t agree with everything he says. The subtle accusations by both the sicko4205 and “unseen” the other night with regards to death threats and the possibility that some of us so called “Palin haters” could have been the possible arsonist at her church were over the top. I believe those comments are in one of the links I posted for our new HA Police Lady.

Oh yeah, and “unseens” announcement that Sara Palin is smarter than Lincoln was another real hoot.

I didn’t say she “hijacked the thread”. But her comment was a slur the way it is when people say that those money-lending Jooos run the world and so forth. Sorry you can’t tell the difference.

No dear, I’m a lapsed Episcopalian. For all your piety you are a hypocrite of the first order. I have never, ever said a thing about anyone else’s religion, but I have defended plenty of people from attacks by others. I’m funny that way.

I’ll be back to deal with the rest of your obnoxious commentary later. I’ll just say for now that it’s up to YOU to find where I have ever said anything negative about Catholics. It’s not my job to disprove a negative – you know, the old “when did you stop beating your wife” trick.

kuncklehead,

You must be kidding. I was on the Herman Cain thread from the start, not that it matters, because your insults, baiting, spoiling for a fight, and not stopping until you got one is there in black and white. Your mob initiated the problem. Anyone starting at page one can see the genesis and lay it directly at your feet.

The other members of your mob admit to that, they just say that it’s well deserved payback; their form of self defense. I say you and the others have no right to make HA threads your own private toilet, with all of you girls on ex lax. You mentioned something about a 60th birthday, don’t know if it was yours. If so, I’m flabbergasted by your behavior.

It certainly is NOT up to me to find where you have said anything negative about Catholics, because I never said you did. What is wrong with you? Do you actually think that I am going to defend myself against a non-existant figment of your imagination? When you come back, make sure to reprint my posts in their entirety and answer/comment on what I actually say and ask, not the smear you are trying to create by accusing me of saying that you said anything anti-Catholic. P.S. You also start talking about JOOOs when responding to jenfidel’s mormon/romney reference, using the JOOOOs device to make the pointed implication that she hated them and called them JOOOs. Where do you get the right to smear like that? You call jenfidel a hypocrite, yet you have smeared me by accusing me of saying something I never did, and you smear her with your JOOOs trick, trying to make everyone think she hates the Jewish people. You smear us both while pointing the finger at her for a smear, and then you call her the hypocrite??? HOW RICH. You’re a real little corker, aren’t you?

What’s really at issue here and on other threads is when commenters offer ideas that are in contradistinction to what a very specific segment of the HA community like, there is an eruption of aspersions, blatant hypocrisy, and eventually, threats.

This sanctimonious double-standard includes all manner of attacks dismissed or ignored when the offending parties are supporters in that certain camp, but everyone else is ridiculed for having the temerity to protect themselves.
After numerous assaults and provocations, defending oneself becomes necessary.

Twisting the facts to suit the members of that certain camp’s purposes and shifting the blame onto non-supporters is both dishonest and reprehensible.

Jesus would be ashamed of the contemptible behavior demonstrated by Christian hypocrites who deliberately make false statements against other Christians in his name.

Actually, from what I understand, Armageddon, or the series of events foretold in the Book of Revelation which include Armageddon, are very much part of God’s plan for the unfolding and culmination of salvation history before the Second Coming.

Unpleasant, to understate it, as Armageddon is, it will be a result of man’s own free decisions to bring about his own wars and tragedies as a result of wiping God from human the course of human events.

As the Crucifixion of our Lord, actual Deicide, was ordained by God from all eternity to accomplish His plan for our salvation, so too is Armaggedon part of the plan of God, allowing events to mysteriously be controlled through our own free will, and at the same time He excercising His power to bring a greater good out of our actions.

So in this sense, Jesus will not be “on a vendetta” to end Armaggedon. All of the Scripture must be fulfilled before Gabriel blows his horn.

annoyinglittletwerp on December 21, 2010 at 9:27 PM

I may be wrong, but I don’t recall where, if anywhere in Scripture, Christ was described by others or described himself as bearing a sword; or actually did bear a sword. Peter bore a sword and cut off the high priest’s servant’s ear, but Christ restored the servant and admonished Peter to put the sword away, telling him that those who live by the sword will also die by it.

I always thought Jesus came to us as a baby in a manger. Something about this time of year makes me think so even more.

tigerlily on December 21, 2010 at 10:43 PM

“Vendetta” simply means a quarrel of long-standing, and I’d say it’ll be His mission to put an end to the one He’s had with the devil.

-Aslan’s Girl

Aslans Girl on December 21, 2010 at 10:45 PM

@Aslan’s Girl, to clarify,

The term vendetta is an old Italian one. It doesn’t mean “mission” it means, from Webster’s:

“an often prolonged series of retaliatory, vengeful, or hostile acts or exchange of such acts”

Origin of VENDETTA
Italian, literally, revenge, from Latin vindicta — more at vindictive

Actually, in old Italy, one was truly successful in one’s vendetta if one could get the ultimate revenge which was to kill one’s opponent while said opponent was committing a serious sin, thereby hoping to not only take the opponent’s physical life, but to deprive him of eternal life. Good times, no? /

I understand the conservative commenters who are of the opinion that Sara Palin can’t win in a general election. There is a case to be made for that. Of course, that is all it is, a case. And, there are certainly strong arguments to make for and against that case. As I’m sure has been repeated a thousand times, many conservatives (or at least republicans) said the same thing about Reagan. But the electability argument can only ever be resolved at the ballot box.

Sure, Sara has a long road ahead of her to either win the nomination or win the general election. Neither is a done deal. It is not even certain she will run.

What I don’t understand is the anger and vitriol some conservatives have toward Sara and anyone who claims to prefer her to other potential candidates. I think it is counter-productive. If the reason is an attempt to get people not to vote for Sara in the primary b/c you don’t think she can win the general, such behaviour is counter-productive. Beating up on Palinistas is just going to make them dig in deeper.
