Fox poll shows Obama approval at new low, 40/51
posted at 12:15 pm on December 17, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
A new poll by Fox News and Opinion Dynamics shows the job approval rating for Barack Obama hitting a new low, 40%, while disapproval hits 51%, just one point below his previous record set in September. Approval among independents hit an even lower level of 37/48, virtually unchanged from October’s 37/49. Andrew Malcolm reports that almost two-thirds of respondents now don’t believe that Obama will win a second term:
“Your best guess, as of today do you think Barack Obama will be reelected president in 2012 or not?”
Mid-December 2010 Overall: 29% Yes, 64% No.
Mid-December 2009 Overall: 44% Yes, 46% No.
Tellingly, among Obama’s core Democrats, those who believe he’ll be reelected fell from 71% a year ago to a minority, 49%, now. Those Democrats who say he won’t be reelected increased from 19% to 42%.
Among independents, a crucial part of the Democrat’s winning 2008 coalition, those who think he’ll be reelected fell from 46% to 31%. Those who predict he won’t jumped from 44% to 63%.
This stands in stark contrast to the Washington Post/ABC poll released earlier this week. That showed Obama losing ground on Afghanistan, with a 45/46 rating, and tanking on the economy, 43/54, and the deficit, 38/55 — but maintaining a 49/47 approval rating. However, even after 4 days of publishing stories from the poll results, neither WaPo nor ABC has released any of the sample data from the survey. Given their predilection for oversampling Democrats, the lack of transparency should warn anyone about taking it seriously, especially since Marist found the same trend as Fox and almost the same numbers (42/50).
Another question asked respondents whether Obama deserved to be re-elected after his performance in the first two years of his term. Those figures were only marginally better, with 35% saying Obama deserved a second term and 53% wanting to take their chances with someone else. Among independents, those numbers dropped to 32/50, and only 67% of Democrats think Obama should get a second term. That’s not exactly an enthusiastic base. On the plus side, Obama beats George W. Bush in a head-to-head match … but only by eight points and without a majority, 48/40.
Unlike the Post and ABC, Fox released the party-affiliation composition of its survey. Republicans have a three-point edge, which at least gets the leadership right, but the poll oversamples both parties a bit at the expense of independents (38/35/27). Given that the Marist poll showed similar results with a seven-point Democratic edge in the sample, it seems as though the consensus is that Obama’s doing poorly, just as the midterms indicated.

I find these reults from Fox, Marist, and Zogby (39% overall approval) very interesting in the sense that he has either gotten no bounce among indy voters after the tax deal, or has actually LOST ground among them following the deal.

Obama in 2012: a 35% approval rating, a billion dollars to spend destroying his opponent, and a voter fraud operation unlike anything seen (or unseen) in history.
rrpjr on December 17, 2010 at 12:25 PM
He’s losing liberal because of the Bush tax cut extension deal with the GOP, but he’s not gaining moderates, because instead of pretending in Clintonesque fashion that he was all-in on the compromise, he basically told the swing voters he hated the deal and would run in 2012 against any further extension.

Yeah, but:
Carter, Reagan, and Clinton all had patterns like this through their first 2 terms in office – dropping from around 60 to around 40 after just under 2 years.
What happens in the next 2 years is what will dictate the 2012 election – nothing else.
Economy recovers, like Reagan? Four more years.
Economy stagnates, like Carter? He’s a one-termer.
The interesting case is Clinton. What did he have that Reagan had but not Carter?
Just asking. I don’t know.

The dot com bubble and Ross Perot as an independent. Clinton didn’t hit 50% in his relection because Perot took 8.4% from Dole’s 40.7%. Also Dole was not a stellar candidate.

The American people have given him the benefit of the doubt for his first two years. Let’s see what his approval rating is in January 2012. By then, we’ll know if he’s toast or not.

People dont care. He will get a free ride again ya know just cause he’s cool or whatever. Its all image no substance. If Oprah ran she would win in a landslide. Sad truth.

These polls are odd, in that they seem to indicate that certain of those polled change their view of this President on a weekly basis. Are they flawed in this way, or is anyone seriously that stupid and malleable?
Jaibones on December 17, 2010 at 2:13 PM
This is why the Right fails, it goes immediately to defeat and only takes victory, if it by chance falls into their lap. Also such a defeatist view, not a way to gain a broad range of support. A weird thing to say in a thread about dropping polls.
Sharr on December 17, 2010 at 2:13 PM
Fine, but it wasn’t the blockheads who gave him his margin of victory. He had huge support among independents and even disaffected moderate Republicans (my parents, lifelong Republicans, despised Bush, were cool to McCain and took a gamble on Obama!). But where is that support now? Look at the electoral map.
Obama will have to spend every dime of his billion dollars, squeeze every last fraudulent vote out of the system he can, and probably start a war to boot.
rrpjr on December 17, 2010 at 2:19 PM
I didnt say dont try. But too many people just dont care, or dont know the facts. Because if they did The Won would not have been elected in the first place.

mikeyboss on December 17, 2010 at 2:31 PM
Wow. The GOP is going to have a really hard time finding someone to lose to him in 2012. They might have to suck worse than McCain did.
So what are you moderates going to do to throw it this time? See if Mavericky Maverick McMaverick will run again, or are you going to get on hands and knees and beg Lindsey Grahamnesty to step up?
I mean, that’s still the GOP strategy right? No matter how bad the Democrat candidate is, we’ll nominate one that’s worse?
I’m not going to get excited about these poll numbers. I’m sure the GOP will find a way to f**k it up.

Triangulation, Dick Morris, and Ross Perot. We also need to find a stronger candidate than Bob Dole. Mitch McConnell need not apply.

IMO polls have that margin of error and are all based on probabilities. I read somewhere that something like one out of every five polls, even from good pollsters, is going to be just plain wrong.
alwaysfiredup on December 17, 2010 at 3:28 PM
Found it: A pollster with a 5 point MOE will have on average one out of 20 polls completely wrong.
alwaysfiredup on December 17, 2010 at 3:33 PM
Also part of which got Obama elected,he could be a blank slate upon which many idealists might paint any picture their hearts desired. Hope & Change are no longer magic words, at least as used by Obama, he no longer has such an advantage, and its really apparent.
