Victory: Reid pulls earmark-packed omnibus spending bill

posted at 8:44 pm on December 16, 2010 by Allahpundit

No surprise, but still darned sweet.

Speaking now on the Senate floor, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) says he is “sorry and disappointed” to announce that he does not have the votes for the omnibus spending package. Instead, he will work with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) to draft a temporary continuing resolution to fund the government into early next year.

Reid says nine Republican senators approached him today to tell him that while they would like to see the bill passed, they could not vote for it. He did not reveal the names of the nine. A top Senate source tells National Review Online that “it looks like Harry Reid buckled under the threat of Republicans reading [the bill] aloud.”

The mood among conservatives on Twitter and inside the GOP caucus is sheer exultation, from McConnell declaring this a “victory for the country” to McCain calling it a “seminal moment” to Philip Klein at AmSpec pronouncing it a triumph — albeit an early and incomplete one — for the tea party. Remember, when the bill was first released a few days ago, there were reportedly at least four Republicans thinking of voting for it, including two retirees in Bennett and Voinovich. Having nothing to lose, they’re presumably still onboard, which means this must have crashed and burned because red-state Democrats got nervous about it. McCaskill was opposed early on, and I assume Tester, Nelson, and the usual suspects must have been jittery too. The question now: To make it up to Reid, did they promise to vote yes on another piece of legislation still to come in the lame duck? Like, say, the DREAM Act?

For your amusement, here are McCain and Mark Kirk taking a few moments on the Senate floor to grind Reid’s face in this failure. Click the image to watch.

Update: The gray lining in this silver cloud for most conservatives? With the spending bill off the agenda, Reid now has time to bring “don’t ask, don’t tell” to the floor for a vote. That bill and the DREAM Act are now slated to hit the floor on Saturday.

So will the devout Lieberman walk from Georgetown on the sabbath in a snowstorm again this year? DADT is his bill.

And I bet the Dem caucus isn’t too happy about being held in town into Christmas again this year.

Wethal on December 16, 2010 at 9:25 PM

I was listening earlier to FOX , not sure who it was but he was saying that the Dems added many of those earmarks themselves. In other words they were requests that have been hanging around by the GOP members for some time and they just included them into this Omnibus bill. I would not put it past them to do so to either embarrass the GOP and or hang that nice bribe in front of them, actually both!

bluemarlin on December 16, 2010 at 9:11 PM

I think they discussed this on Special Report. A panelist, Chris Stirewalt (sp?) of The Washington Times (I think) said that the Dems appropriations committee resurrected many historical GOP earmark requests to induce them or to blackmail them. What pieces of sh*t. And good for the GOPers that took grief ultimately did the right thing.

Now, torpedo Dream Act.

Stopped at Rachel Maddow’s show (without turning to stone) and watched her whine about how great Pelosi is to pass all this great stuff in the past two years only to see the stuff die in the Senate.

LOL. Maddow thinks she and Pelosi are mainstream America.

The implications on this are huge. Not only has a strong message been sent, but Harry has been knee capped and we also are relieved to know that the initial “funding” for ObamaCare has basically been obliterated.

If this bill had passed, it could have defeated all of the pending lawsuits against the ObamaCare boondoggle through a form of acceptance (waiver and estoppel) of the funding of the ObamaCare sh*t sammich.

It is going to be a very Merry Christmas and a Wonderful New Year!

I am a whole lot more worried about Iran and the NoKos than about Putin launching a nuke at us. Obama just needs a foreign policy victory of some sort, any sort. Obama has bollixed Israel, hasn’t deterred Iran, and North Korea is like the Mad Hatter of its part of the planet.

Maybe I just need to read more, but I bet I know as much as most of our dopey current senators. I just don’t think drawing down on our own capability makes any sense when Iran is racing at breakneck speed to arm up.

Iran reportedly has missiles in Venezuela now, and North Korea is working on long-range rockets that can carry nuclear warheads. Of course, the NoKo rockets tend to fall into the ocean, but they will keep trying, and will have Iranian help. Iran supposedly has rockets that can reach Europe.

I am disgusted with my Sen Scott Brown for committing to DADT. He should have stated that DADT should not be on the Sen calendar until the tax and spending issues were resolved. If he votes for cloture on the DREAM act he is toast in 2012. The good news is no way in hell Article 125 (sodomy)of the USCMJ, and the penalty imposed (hard time) will ever be changed. Dear Friends,

Last night, economic conservatives won with the collapse of the Omnibus appropriations spending bill. A growing number of Americans opposed it. Your voice was heard.

Senator Reid announced to the Senate that we would not move forward with a 1,924 page, $1.1 trillion bill containing 6,600 earmarks. Earlier in the day, I joined with 12 other newly-elected Senators in sending a letter to the Majority Leader urging him to halt this massive spending bill. Change is coming to Washington as Congress moves forward with a much less expensive and responsible short-term Continuing Resolution that will cost less, allowing essential government functions to continue until the newly elected Senators and Congressman take office January 5th.

The American people won.

This is why having Kirk is a good thing. He’s no Rand Paul, but this is Illinois.
