Boehner to Obama: If you’re serious about earmarks, veto the new spending bill; Update: Dissect the bill yourself

posted at 7:02 pm on December 14, 2010 by Allahpundit

My friends, it’s bluff-calling time.

If President Obama is truly serious about ending earmarks, he should oppose Senate Democrats’ pork-laden omnibus spending bill and announce he will veto it if necessary. This bill represents exactly what the American people have rejected: more spending, more earmarks, and more big government. Republicans strongly oppose this last-ditch spending spree, a smack in the face to taxpayers at a time when we’re borrowing 40 cents of every dollar we spend. Senate Democrats even go so far as to plow more than $1 billion into implementing ObamaCare, despite a growing national revolt against this job-killing health care law.

The need to stop Washington’s job-killing spending binge may be lost on Senate Democrats, but it will be a top priority for the new Republican majority in the House. We have already banned earmarks and made a pledge to America to end the practice of omnibus bills like this disgrace and cut spending to pre-‘stimulus,’ pre-bailout levels. Instead of making reckless spending decisions in the waning days of the lame-duck session, Senate Democrats should stand down so we can get to work on cleaning up Washington’s fiscal mess.

There’s not a chance in hell that he’ll do it given the left’s ongoing tax-deal-inspired freakout about “triangulation,” but I’m really keen to see how The One justifies not vetoing it. Will he fall back on ye olde “earmarks are a very small part of the budget” argument? In case so, be sure to watch the clip below of his recent weekly address on earmarks; he deals with, and dismisses, that argument specifically. Maybe instead he’ll pull a tu quoque and argue that the GOP is still plenty sweet on earmarks itself, in which case they have no right to lecture him. The problem there is that while some caucus members might have cold feet about banning earmarks, the GOP leadership has remained united against them, with even McConnell (grudgingly) voting in favor of DeMint’s ban in the Senate caucus. My guess, then: The One will try to finesse the definition of “earmark” by claiming that it’s not pork per se that’s bothersome, merely the process of congressmen inserting pork into the bill after it’s emerged from the Appropriations Committee. Think the public will buy that legalistic definition? Me neither. Think they’ll find this a worthy enough cause to risk shutting down the government for, though? I’m … less certain.

Update: James Richardson at Red State e-mails to say that they’ve got a full copy of the bill posted and that readers are picking through it to find the most egregiously porky provisions. According to McCain’s office, which is doing the same thing, there are just shy of 6,500 earmarks in all totaling $8.3 billion in all — a pittance compared to the $1.1 trillion overall appropriated in the bill, but a damn fine peg for stumping against it in light of last month’s elections.

Blowback

No you’re not.

If you’re concerned that the Democrats would rather shut down the government than to give up corruption, take it up with them.

FloatingRock on December 14, 2010 at 8:45 PM

The Democrats who were originally angry about his handling of the tax cuts will go absolutely wild with bloodlust if he were to veto the spending bill, and would most likely begin impeachments proceedings immediately.

Meanwhile, the Republicans would just stand back, watch the show and just let things play out.

pilamaye on December 14, 2010 at 8:46 PM

Pathetic. They are not fit to lead. Obama will have no problem getting elected with these losers as the opposition. Even Rep Ryan is turning out to be a fraud of sorts with his BS plan that cuts spending by the year 2070. Christ almighty, we’ll all be dead by then.
patrick neid on December 14, 2010 at 8:05 PM

It will never come from congress. Any hope put there is misplaced. Just forget the next two years unless you feel a desperate masochistic hunger for disappointment. Repeal Obamacare? They can’t even resist festooning earmarks on bills three weeks after pledging to ban them. No, the only hope is executive leadership. The only hope for this country is inspiring and uncompromising leadership in the presidency that gives purpose and demonstrates possibility to this feckless, lost-sheep party. That is what leaders do, and what our leader in 2012 must do. I’ve seen the right executive do remarkable things in what seemed like hopeless conditions with people who were demoralized, seemingly incapable and/or rudderless.

We can burn the phone lines and send messages in the meantime, and perhaps save ourselves from the worst, but we will never get brave, fearless, proactive conservative leadership from these people. It just isn’t in them. They need to be led, must be led.

Wethal on December 14, 2010 at 7:17 PM

Exactly. They are going to do as much crap as is humanly or maybe inhumanly possible before Jan. 5. Today Dingy threatened to keep the Lame Duck in session till Jan 5 if they don’t get done what he wants done. I’m not sure how that works exactly, since they all are supposedly being sworn in retroactively to Jan 3 on the 5th. But, either way, they plan to use every second of their big majorities to do as much damage as possible.

My original comment stated that he has nothing to gain by doing it. This is partly because very few people will actually expect him to (its never been done), but also because anyone who stands to feel that signing would “ruin his reputation”, etc etc, already hates him. He has no reason whatsoever, political, to veto.

ernesto on December 14, 2010 at 8:51 PM

Boehner is right. It is as if the Democrats are just thumbing their noses at everyone. I think the tax cut bill should go through and the Republicans should cut spending in the new Congress, but this thing needs to be stopped right now.

Terrye on December 14, 2010 at 8:59 PM

Good that the Demrats demonstrate how to use power, how to even in defeat press on with their America savaging, Jobs killing, govt growing, tax and spending agenda.

It should be instructive to the Republican NEUTERATI on how to forge ahead in spite of opinion, to win at all costs, to step on the neck of the enemy rather than reach across the isle, it should be instructive would that there be a Republican Party capable of learninbg, believing in the vision and articulating it.

Sadly there are far too many RINO Good Old Boy DC insiders thinning the blood of the Patriots for real victory to ensue.
I hope we have time to send the in new troops, the new blood, to drive out the old, to save our country. And I am not talking about 2011. Boehner, MConnell, don’t have what it takes to return the ruthless behavior required to WIN, if the do they will prove it by SHUTTING DOWN THE GOVT, MAKING SURE NOTHING HAPPENS UNTIL JAN 6th.

dhunter on December 14, 2010 at 9:06 PM

Hmmm — perhaps the first project for the GOP House ought to be to defund all the pork in the lame duck session (if not also before then), then let the GOP LOSERSHIP Senate, Harry’s pals and WH suck on that for a while.

Step two, provide a clear path from unemployment to welfare after 6 months. This would include means testing unemployment so those families with one spouse gainfully funemployed wouldn’t be on the public dole unless that family qualified for welfare. This would effectively kill any future fiascos with unemployment insurance being extended.

Barack Obama is a selfish, self-centered, ego-obsessed infantile person. He can’t take constructive actions that benefit others if it jeopardizes his idea of what and who he is. Spending the money earned by U.S. taxpayers is some sort of mission of revenge he’s on and psychiatrists could devote entire careers to discovering why and they’d still have work to do.

I have one question or criterion now I bring to bear on every person I see in politics and every political intellectual I encounter, and which forms my basis for political worth: does this person understand the Left, and is he or she willing to fight it. Nothing else matters. It is the bottom line question of our time, from which hope rises, or at which dead ends are realized.

Even if you strip out the “earmarks” the spending does NOT change. That’s a different part of the bill, the appropriation, which anyone who has half a brain and has been paying attention already knew.

Killing $8.3 billion in earmarks does NOT save $8.3 billion, it merely gives the bureaucrats more discretion as to how to spend it instead of directing it to a specific project. It saves ZERO. Thanks for paying attention, and for all your hard work.

The very real travesty here is that for two years the Dems have controlled Congress…both houses…and the White House…and they could not get separate spending bills passed into law prior to this week?

Over a thousand pages of garbage, and they demand that more should be added to the bill?

The idea of a lame duck session of Congress should even be seated is something we all must take a very good and hard look at, and soon. This is their last chance at sticking it to the American people, and too many are more focused on whether to get an X-Box or a Wii for Christmas than they are concerned about how this bill, flawed severely, is going to make next Christmas a lot tougher than this one.

These are our employees…and as employers we really need to take a look at how low our standards have become to allow these employees to remain a drain on our dime, our productivity and our future.

$8 billion in earmarks? A $1.1 trillion budget?

There was a time when this amount was considered a lot of money.

Right after the new House is seated in January, we must insist on an overall paring back of government and a real reduction in real dollar expenses that have been foisted on our backs, and those of our kids and their kids as well.

Common sense seems to be the most elusive commodity out there lately.

Ok, so 2010 we have 3.55 trillion in spending, with 2.8 trillion in revenues. We need to cut 33% of spending to get back down to parity; more if we’re going to pay any debt down.

Our first fight… to cut 8/1100 from the spending bill.

Um, we need to cut 363/1100 from the spending bill don’t we? I mean maybe I’m not as good at math as I thought; but when we need to cut 1/3rd of the budget, you don’t start with less than a quarter of a percent and really get worked up over that, do you?

Sure I’m spending half again my income, but I switched to generic coffee… now instead of going $30,000 in debt this year I’ll go $29,998.37 in debt this year… look at how hard I’m working to solve my financial problem.

Plan to cut the damn thing? Fine. But lets try for meaningful cuts while we still have some momentum… or is that not worth bothering with if we can make pointless gestures?
