Poll: What was the Obamateurism of the Week?

posted at 9:00 am on December 12, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

This isn’t the poll of the moment — it’s the poll you have to take right now.  Time to choose the Obamateurism of the Week, and our motto here is to make sure you get a chance to choose one of the five.  Er, six.  There would have been only five, but you hostage-takers out there would have insisted on adding yesterday’s into the mix.  I would have fought to limit it to five, but you know I have a Christmas party to attend and my wife would get annoyed at me defending myself … so I’ll just let you guys vote on your own.

Previous 2010 “winners”:

Got an  Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Unprecedented!

Finally, using that word in it’s correct context, I would like to officially note that this is the first week I can recall that there has been just one, obvious choice.

Mutnodjmet on December 12, 2010 at 10:21 AM

Well, *of course* I went with the obvious: abdicating. BUT, “hostage takers” was a close, close, close second!

I nominate abdicate-gate as the OOTY.

It’s a shame really that the ‘politics of the moment’ quip happened in the same week as the Christmas party.

ElectricPhase on December 12, 2010 at 10:22 AM

I can just imagine the behind-the-scenes action that preceded this lil episode. Obama probably whined that he only had a few minutes and Bill agreed but silently thought “imma show this amateur how its done…’

perfect.

Due to the strong field of pathetic behaviors we have to choose from this week, I shall have to have another coffee before I make a decision. Way to go, President Jackass, on making this week’s poll such a doozy.

While this week’s winner is obvious, there are a LOT of good choices. Any of the other entrys would be winners in a different week. Bammy and Bubba not only win this week, but this is now my favotrite to win the award for 2010. It just doesn’t get any worse…

Agree with what others have said, this week’s choice was easy, but the contenders would have been potential winners in other weeks. My choice for runner up: not being politics of the moment but what we can get done now. Does this crown not listen to what they are saying? I’ve heard politicians contradict themselves, but they usually do it in different speeches, not in the same sentence.

AZfederalist on December 12, 2010 at 10:35 AM

But exiting a presser to go party and leaving a former president to do your job makes you look incredibly weak, foolish and generally purposeless.

Heck…just the act of calling on a former president in the first place to do your job while you stand there like a prop makes you look incredibly weak, foolish and generally purposeless.

Obama didn’t need to bring in the “big dog” to make himself look incredibly weak, foolish, and generally purposeless . . . he’s mastered those skills quite nicely all by himself. Maybe if he can just talk Clinton into doing all his campaigning for him, he’ll have a little time to work on his short game, shoot some hoops, and still not make the little lady wait impatiently . . .

tpitman on December 12, 2010 at 10:36 AM

TXMomof3 on December 12, 2010 at 10:37 AM

OK, I chose leaving the podium to Slick Willie by a nose over ditching the Boooosh tax cuts in 2 years and the GOP hostage takers. What the hell was he thinking? Why didn’t he get Beltway Bob to take over in his absence? Leaving the presidential podium to a Clinton? Good Lord, how far has Nobama fallen?

And to top it off, he made a mockery of Michelle Antoinette in the process. You left your post as leader of this nation to the fox who would raid the chicken coop because you fear the wrath of your spouse? Too weak for words. Guess who wears the designer slacks in the White House.

This is a GOP campaign commercial moment if they can spin it right. You don’t want to cheese off anyone’s wife in the process, or you’re in deep kimchee, GOP. Just ask President Jackass.

i think many, many libs & moderates & maybe even some conservatives thought when Clinton came to the podium: “whew, now we have someone that we can talk to; who we can reason with; who knows that compromise is the only way to achieve anything.”

though I do agree that it looked weak. especially after his world apology tour & Wikileaks has exposed him & his administration for having NO CLUE on foreign policy.

kelley in virginia on December 12, 2010 at 11:01 AM

Obama leaving Clinton to handle the presser is actually a two-fer. Not only did he make himself look weak(er) by turning over his responsibilities to someone not even involved in the subject matter, he also showed his back to a Clinton.

This little episode reminds me of one of the debates between GWB and John Kerry. They walked out onto the stage and shook hands, and Kerry held GWBs hand just a fraction of a second longer and when GWB tried to walk to his podium, Kerry still had hold of his hand. There was tremendous wailing and gnashing of teeth (from both sides) about how this made GWB look weak, and just that little instance made it look like Kerry was in charge.

That was nothing compared to this embarrassment.

Turn over the keys to the nuclear football to someone else. This guy might have to keep an engagement on his social calendar when armageddon approaches. But don’t give them to Michelle – she is easily irked by tardiness, apparently.

Obama’s very excuse for leaving, the act of leaving, and the photos even that the NYT ran, for goodness sake, all constitute an absolutely unforgettable moment that will forever be associated with his presidency.

Still, I voted for “hostage takers” as a sympathy vote. I can only compare this week’s poll to the 1939 Oscar nominations. They’re all so very worthy.

Drained Brain on December 12, 2010 at 11:26 AM

Letting Clinton alone at his podium was dumb, but describing the Republicans – who he purportedly wants to work with- as “hostage takers” was amateurishly malicious and nakedly indicative of his “post-partisanb.s.

Have to go with that.

ya2daup on December 12, 2010 at 12:03 PM

I turned on the TV for the first time that day right around 6:03pm, and the first image I saw was of Bill standing at that podium, grinning and carrying on like it was 1996. My brain actually froze up for a few seconds as it struggled to process what I was seeing (were I a dog, I’m sure my head would’ve been cocking from side to side). It’s rare that you run into something so weird that it actually reminds you why the phrase “mind boggling” was coined.

Blacklake on December 12, 2010 at 12:04 PM

This used to be easy. Now there are so many worthy choices, picking one is almost impossible.

brtex on December 12, 2010 at 12:06 PM

Of course there is only one choice! As brilliant as Tingle legs Matthews delusional hallucinations may make it seem to him abdicating the Presidential Seal and podium to a former IMPEACHED, disbarred and disgraced President to bring an eggnog and cookies to his overbearing better is the height of stupidity and a big ef u to the American People.

I had no idea about the cost guard or the “E Pluribus unim” idiocy!

The weekly list reveals in stark clarity that this supposed Constitutional Scholar is a colossal fraud perpetrated upon the American People by a corrupt Party concerned only with their complete power over their minions.
No wonder our constitution is in tatters and the American people are suffocating under the dictates of a Federal Govt Gone Wild.

SHARPTOOTH on December 12, 2010 at 12:11 PM

I went with the “hostage taker” remark, because there was actually a sliver of logic in having Clinton at the podium — if the idea was to make moderate swing voters orgasm with delight over the idea of seeing Bubba back at the White House again, as part of a new Obama triangulation strategy. The leg thrills of people like David Brooks and John Avalon show they just eat crap like this up.

If the PR stunt was only targeted at them, then it makes sense. On the other hand, if you’re trying to prove you’ve gotten the message of the swing voters that they want compromises, making a deal with Republicans and then going in front of the cameras and basically saying you hate the deal, you hate the people you made the deal with and you hate your own supporters from not being competent enough to get your agenda through and forcing the president to make the deal, you really haven’t convinced the swing voters you’re committed to this “moving to the center” strategerie.

jon1979 on December 12, 2010 at 12:11 PM

Wow! Obama was really in top form this week. Mr. Morrissey, if you are compiling these for a book, it would be a unfortunate to leave any of these out.

Cindy Munford on December 12, 2010 at 12:16 PM

I don’t know how anyone didn’t vote for that press conference. It was amateurism defined and would be a firing offense in any private organization. Of all the wacky things I’ve seen bad executives do in my 30+ years in business, that one took the cake. It was as if Obama and Clinton were doing a satirical skit.

This is how “Community Organizers” operate. He fully intends to make the next election about the lazy slackers and govt check takers against the working men and women. If he gets all the non-taxpayers he wins and by framing the debate as greedy rich guys keepin the poor down he firmly believes he wins…and he may very well be right, sadly!

This is by design to grow the govt payrolls and welfare checks to make people beholden to guys like this Marxist!

I had read that it was a party for the WH staff. They are graced with his royal presence nearly every day (except when he is vacationing of jetting around the world for photo ops). So the excuse was another weak-sister throwaway line by the Fresh Prince of Bill Ayers.

I think it had far more to do with martinis flowing, cigarettes at the avail. (among other things) than it did with Obama keeping Michelle or “staff” at the wait.

In 2009, an analysis showed a White House party run rate of two a week, with only a minor increase for the holiday season. I wonder what the final tally will be for Bammie this year?

This little episode reminds me of one of the debates between GWB and John Kerry. They walked out onto the stage and shook hands, and Kerry held GWBs hand just a fraction of a second longer and when GWB tried to walk to his podium, Kerry still had hold of his hand. There was tremendous wailing and gnashing of teeth (from both sides) about how this made GWB look weak, and just that little instance made it look like Kerry was in charge.

That was nothing compared to this embarrassment.

What I thought from that little episode was that Kerry looked needy and weak, not GW. GW was getting on with things (assuming leadership) with that move and Kerry was standing there, needy and grabby. Thought Kerry just looked like a needy wuss with that hand-grab of his.

I read not too long ago that Obama claims he’s stopped having those Wednesday night “cocktail parties” at the White House but I think we all know that’s hardly the truth. Likely they’re now called the Thursday Evening Martini Fests or something similar.

Obama’s Walkie last week just proved that the partying is still going on.

An updated version of the “Change” photoshop I posted last night. Details… I’m a stickler for details.

BHO proves he’s a Jack Wagon by leaving his own press conference to head off to Namby Pamby Land…

Bill Clinton: Obama’s new President Czar

Carl on December 13, 2010 at 9:51 AM

Everything you need to know about Obama was on display at that press conference. What he did was expedient to him, everything else be damned. He did not want to be there so he left, Clinton provided his escape hatch. This is Obama’s life to date in a few moments.

Bartleby the Scrivener had nothing on Obama.

/i would prefer not to
