Rock bottom: Obama hits 42% approval in new McClatchy poll
posted at 7:24 pm on December 10, 2010 by Allahpundit
Something to chew on for the David Brooks fans of the world, who were duly informed this morning that The One’s new embrace of pragmatic Brooksian centrism means that “Obama and the Democrats have had an excellent week.” Check the Pollster.com scoreboard and you’ll see that his numbers were just as bad (or even a point worse) among some major pollsters in October, but that was because independents were gearing up for the big red wave on election day. This new downturn isn’t because indies are souring on him — his numbers among that group are static — but because, after the federal pay freeze and the heart-ache of the tax cuts deal, liberals are suddenly very chilly indeed about Hopenchange. Even if that’s just a blip rather than the start of a new ceiling for his numbers among the left, it’s worth flagging this as the first signpost on the road to finding out just how angry progressives will get at him for breaking his promise on taxes. Are we actually going to see him south of 40 percent next week?
The poll was taken from Dec. 2 through Wednesday, as the president proposed a two-year freeze on federal civilian workers’ pay and cut a deal with congressional Republicans to extend expiring tax cuts — even those for the wealthy, which he’d opposed.
Overall, just 42 percent of registered voters approve of how he’s doing his job, while 50 percent disapprove.
Obama’s standing among Democrats dropped from a month ago, with his approval rating falling to 74 percent from 83 percent, and his disapproval rating almost doubling, from 11 percent to 21 percent.
Among liberals, his approval rating dropped from 78 percent to 69 percent and his disapproval rating jumped from 14 percent to 22 percent.
In a hypothetical match-up with Huckabee, he leads by just four points, and against Romney he actually trails by two. (Against Palin, he leads by, er, 12.) And yes, it is depressing that even at a moment of terrible weakness for The One, the creme de la creme of Republican contenders aren’t way ahead of him in the polls. What’s it going to take for Mitt or Huck to bounce out to a five-point lead? Iranian nuke test? Federal default? Bizarre, tone-deaf White House press conference in which The One hands the mic to Bill Clinton so he can go drink eggnog with Michelle? What?
Don’t celebrate too hard, though. Charlie Cook, who was on the money in predicting a big GOP midterm landslide months before it happened, says independents are sure to smile on the tax cuts deal based on the focus groups he’s observed. Will they smile enough to offset the bleeding Obama’s going to do among lefties, though? Exit quotation from Cook’s piece, which I’m proposing as the official slogan for RINOcon if/when it happens: “The difference in attitude between those focus-group participants and the bloggers on the left and the right, not to mention the conservative and liberal combatants on the cable-news food-fight shows, is striking. Liberals and conservatives have passion. Moderates and independents have lives.”
Update: Yeah, I’m thinking we’re definitely going to crash 40 percent next week:
Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) criticized Obama’s plan to extend all tax rates for two years as following in the vein of “Reaganomics,” the free market-oriented policies sought by the GOP president when he was in office in the 1980s.
“If we recklessly cut taxes for the wealthiest 2 percent, then Obamanomics will look an awful lot like Reaganomics,” Jackson said in a statement…
“That was President Reagan’s strategy: a ‘starve the beast’ plan of lowered taxes and increased military spending that would force Congress to make deep cuts in programs for the most vulnerable,” the Chicago Democrat added.
Jesse Jackson Jr was national co-chair of Obama’s presidential campaign.

You’re wrong AP, Barry hit rock bottom this afternoon when he handed over the podium to Slick Willie to dash off to a party.

I think all it’ll take is for those GOP contenders to stand on the same stage as Barry at the 3 Presidential debates and offer a clear alternative for the American people. If they choose to go for another 4 years of this(not to mention the next 2), then God help us all.

A lot has changed since Obama’s candidacy, but one thing that has remained the same is that Obama himself — whether he’s urging people to expect more or schooling them on why they should be happy with less — is always the righteous one.

That bridge crossing Obama’s Rubicon may very well have been this week in toto – starting with the “framework to the tax compromise” thru turning the podium over to Clenis and telling the world:
That was jaw-dropping.

Bulimic Obamanomics? After all that binge-The left is yowling about the purge?
canditaylor68 on December 10, 2010 at 8:24 PM
Romney and the Huckster may be the creme de la creme of Republican likely challengers in terms of todays polls only. There’s plenty of time for the new crop of candidates to make their mark.
slickwillie2001 on December 10, 2010 at 8:44 PM
My prediction is if he keeps sliding in the polls and double-crossing his own party and alienating his base, somebody’s going to leak something they’ve been holding onto in order to protect him, that will force him to not run for reelection. Something like the LA Times Khalidi tapes, his actual college transcripts, his college application where he applied as a foreign student or listed his religion as Muslim, will suddenly appear. Like dealing with the Mafia, he messed with the wrong people.
PatMac on December 10, 2010 at 9:07 PM
This poll also compares head to head results of Obama vs Palin. Let me show you how they compare to the 2010 midterm results and then I’ll show why these numbers are completely out of whack.
2010 House exit polls McClatchey BO VS SP
OVERALL 45/52 52/40
DEMS 91/7 85/11
GOP 5/94 12/78
INDIES 37/56 52/35
LIBS 90/8 83/13
MODER 55/42 68/26
CONSERV 13/84 26/64
<$50000 54/43 57/37
$50,000+ 42/55 50/42
WHITES 37/60 43/46
MEN 41/55 53/40
WOMEN 48/49 50/39
COMMENTS AND CONCLUSIONS:
1)So we're supposed to believe that someone whose job approval/disapproval number is now 42/50 and someone who several polls proclaim that only about 40% of the electorate deserves to be re-elected, but because he is running against Sarah Palin in 2012, thus will become less hated and despised by our side, is not as socialistic as we first thought, who suddenly does not incur the wrath of the opponents of Obamacare, who the angry white man is not angry at anymore, with millions of women flocking to re-elect Obama because of white guilt, at the same time millions of folks are still unemployed and the economy is in the tank but more than willing to give Obama 4 more years, and conservatives apparently vote twice the rate in 2012 for Obama (26% to 13%)because Palin doesn't represent their conservative values or whatever. Now if you buy that I have several lakefront properties to sell you in the hurricane zone.
2)Let me tell you there is no way that Sarah Palin is only going to get 46% of the WHITE vote in any election against Obama. Did you see Obama's job approval/disapproval with WHITE folks is at 33/59.
3)And 87% of Republicans disapprove of Obama but only 78% of Republicans would vote for Palin. Yea sure. 89% of Republicans voted for McCain and he wasn't the most beloved Republican around, was he?
4)One of the key reasons why McCain lost in 2008 was millions of conservatives stayed home and did not vote. Do you really think again that 26% of conservatives are going to vote for Obama, a socialist, when only 13% of them voted for the Dems in 2010, and many of these conservatives voted for Blue Dog Democrats and not for Obama. And do you think these conservatives who stayed home in 2008 are going to do so in 2012 when a Reagan conservative is running for POTUS? Not on your life. All you need is some common sense. Conservatives vote for Reagan conservatives running on a conservative platform. They do NOT vote for Marxists or socialists given a choice between the two candidates.
5)Several hundred more polls will be produced to show Palin is not viable against Obama, but bottom line-can Palin convince 60% of the WHITE vote to vote for her and the GOP in 2012 as they did in 2010? The simple answer: Yes she can. Why am I convinced? She did it in 2010 in orchestrating the huge GOP landslide victory a month ago. And Obama will have two more years to be even become more despised than he is now.

Obama is still a credible candidate for re-election. In a crap economy and even with all the mistakes and amateurisms he has pulled off his popularity is almost at break even. If the economy is perceived as definitely and slowly improving (even if slightly) and he comes across (albeit superficially) as trying to work with Republicans, his odds of re-election actually improve quite a bit. Let us not deceive ourselves, Obama will be a formidable opponent in 2012.

Mitt will have to give up on Romney Care and Huck will have to give up on religion and learn economics.
