Friday Palin op-ed in the Journal: I endorse Paul Ryan’s roadmap on entitlements
posted at 8:25 pm on December 9, 2010 by Allahpundit
It’s no secret that she’s a Ryan fan (see here and here for starters, as one Twitter pal reminded me) but as far as I know, this is the first time she’s explicitly endorsed his roadmap as her preferred blueprint for entitlement reform. Which, I think, is a big deal: Ryan’s problem all along has been that, for all the positive press he gets, he can’t get the Republican leadership to talk seriously about entitlements for fear that doing so will scare off seniors and other prized constituencies. (That’s why I was surprised by his no vote on the Deficit Commission; it would have been a good way to keep the conversation going.) Palin’s op-ed alone won’t force McConnell and Boehner to get serious, but it will give new currency to Ryan’s plan and to the project of long-term fiscal solvency generally among tea partiers and the conservative base, and they can conceivably force McConnell and Boehner to get serious. That was the whole point of this post from a few weeks ago, in fact — that there’s only one faction in American politics right now willing and able to exert pressure on Congress to deal with this overarching problem. And since she’s uniquely positioned to bring things to the attention of that faction — and, if she runs, to inject this subject into primary debates — this piece is all to the good.
The commission’s recommendations are a disappointment. That doesn’t mean, though, that the commission’s work was a wasted effort. For one thing, it has exposed the large and unsustainable deficits that the Obama administration has created through its reckless “spend now, tax later” policies.
It also establishes a clear bipartisan consensus on the need to fundamentally reform our entitlement programs. We need a better plan to build on these conclusions with common-sense reforms to tackle our long-term funding crisis in a sustainable way.In my view, a better plan is the Roadmap for America’s Future produced by Rep. Paul Ryan (R., Wisc.). The Roadmap offers a reliable path to long-term solvency for our entitlement programs, and it does so by encouraging personal responsibility and independence.
On health care, it would replace ObamaCare with a new system in which people are given greater control over their own health-care spending. It achieves this partly through creating medical savings accounts and a new health-care tax credit—the only tax credit that would be left in a radically simplified new income tax system that people can opt into if they wish.
The Roadmap would also replace our high and anticompetitive corporate income tax with a business consumption tax of just 8.5%. The overall tax burden would be limited to 19% of GDP (compared to 21% under the deficit commission’s proposals). Beyond that, Rep. Ryan proposes fundamental reform of Medicare for those under 55 by turning the current benefit into a voucher with which people can purchase their own care.
Follow the last link and read it all. One footnote via Philip Klein at AmSpec: Apparently, Paul Ryan told Ryan Ellis, the Tax Policy Director of Americans for Tax Reform, a few days ago that he’s phasing out the consumption tax on businesses (a.k.a. VAT) and replacing it with some as-yet-unannounced revenue-generator. That is to say, the roadmap is still a work in progress, which doesn’t mean Palin’s support will change but rather that you shouldn’t consider all of the provisions described in her op-ed as set in stone.
Two obvious exit questions here. One: Does this mean a Palin/Ryan ticket is officially on the table? And two: If she’s nominated, what’s going to happen to the all-important senior vote in the general election once Democrats start clubbing her over the head with this? I admire her guts in backing it, but it’s not a pure asset for a candidacy. Just ask McConnell and Boehner.
Update: Whoops, look like someone got their signals crossed. According to Klein, Ryan’s not dropping the consumption tax after all.
Update: The plot thickens: Ryan Ellis insists that Paul Ryan told him the consumption tax is out.

For any other candidate, it might hurt their candidacy to talk straight about this stuff, but for Palin, it’s a re-affirmation of everything she stands for.
joe_doufu on December 9, 2010 at 9:23 PM
It hurts the other ones because they do not believe in the policies they put out there. they are poll tested polices not polices arrived at from core convictions thus when they are attacked on them they waffle, hide, appear weak. thus to avoid that they take weak policy positions to avoid attack so they do nto have to defend those polices they do not believe in.
Palin comes at her polices from core convictions so when attacked she can defend her polices form her core convictions. a belief in small limted government, states rights, individual freedom

This is ridiculous. Ryan has been out there taking on all comers and critics defending his economic road map. He’s been leading the way on economic issues. Case in point:

Lets see Palin take on those same critics (in person) just once that Ryan does frequently.

Good for Sarah. Time and again, she’s proven she is no John Kerry…sticking her finger in the air to determine which way the wind is blowing today. She says what needs to be said and does what needs to be done because it’s right, not because it’s popular.

as we move thru this we have to remember that these people are the masters of the shell game. Their current trick is to elide SS/Medicare into the equation.
This is a lie. In 2010 the SS/Payroll tax receipts were about 950B…the outlays were about 1100B…ie about 150B deficit.
The total deficit was something like 1300B. OK? This is a shell game…distraction, deceit. Over the next 30 years does the SS system have to be fixed…sure…minor. Medicare is obviously another issue
But…the pea is under the other thimble. the rest, 1100B to 1200B, of the deficit is not part of SS/Medicare.

Because the Next-In-Line™ criteria, well-established since 1956, has been, in order:
- Sitting President
- Sitting Vice President
- Highest delegate-getter in the previous contested primary, provided that person won at least 2 states
- Ex-Vice President
- Relative of an ex-President (added in 2000 for George W. Bush)
I don’t see “Failed VP nominee” on that list.

He got his hat handed to him by SP in their debate, and him up against PR would be like a replay of the Cheney/Edwards debate but with the young guy making the old guy look like a fool.
The greatest asset Ryan has is he makes all this esoteric governmental & economic stuff – though economics itself isn’t complicated but too many don’t understand it and so much crap is fed to the public – but he makes it all very easy to understand. Which I think is a major asset of his, since he’s trying to sell the public on a resetting of the social contract of the country. I actually think he might have been able to sell W’s Social Security plan, he could have explained it in small understandable bites.

It was agood article. i think Gov Palin may get the best of all fields here as we move into 2011. The line is that Gov Palin would be the best candidate to get Obama re-elected. It’s hogwash but some stupid liberals and RIno’s believe it. so Gov Palin will I think start getting better and better press form the MSM who thinks it helps Obama. the problem for them is the more people see of Palin the more they like her. She will have the right and the far left pulling for her in the nomination process.
what the left fails to understand is that the only reason Palin’s numbers are where they ar eis because of the 2 years of negative press. If she is given respect and the same stage as Mitt and others she wins the general in a landslide. The press will be unable to walk it back. I see a perfect storm forming to drive Gov Palin into the WH in 2013.

After Reagan debated Carter the press (for what it’s worth) spent a lot of time talking about how Reagan’s being on the same stage as the sitting President gave his candidacy a boost, because people began to compare the two on an equal footing. Kinda condescending they way they put it IIRC, but there is something to it.

I don’t know. I think it means that the liberals have decided that the only way to get Obama elected is to have Palin nominated and therefore will play the two step. Have the MSM give her a fair and balanced press while having the left pundits and blogs tear her down.
I think they are wrong and basing a press statergy two years out based on a couple polls is bubble thinking but I’m not going to turn away the good press.
I also think that the left is so far gone they think their polices and ideas represent the majority of the USa now and that giving Palin a stage will show that she is of the minority.
Again I think they are wrong and Palin is the only caniddate that I know the more you see of her the more you like her……

According to my figures, Romney came in third in delegates behind Huckabee. As to the total of win-place-show in primaries, Huckabee outperformed Romney.
But most revealing perhaps, since businesslike efficiency and frugality seems one of Romney’s claims to fame, Romney massively outspent both Huckabee and McCain for disproportionately meager results. According to NY Times, Romney paid a whopping $654,000 per delegate. Huckabee, who scraped along on a fraction of Romney’s finances, paid $45,000 per delegate. Romney spent upwards of $90 million for his paltry delegate total. McCain spent around $39 million to win the show.

I’ve seen this speculated several places, but to me it doesn’t make sense for him. He’s about to take the gavel of the House Budget Committee, where budges begin, he’ll have enormous influence. He’s one of the top two or three in line for Dave Camp’s gavel when his tenure as Ways & Means Chair is up, and Ryan’s said that’s the committee he really wants, as probably does just about everyone, but he has a real shot. Having the gavel of either of those two committees is the prime spot to do the type of work he’s trying to do, maybe Energy & Commerce. If he moves to the Senate he’s got to get to the back of the line seniority wise on the Finance, Budget or HELP Committees.
Since I regard him as a serious guy that wants to affect real change and do important work then where he is makes more sense for him instead of being the low man on the totem pole as he would be in the Senate. Someone like Sean Duffy would be a good choice, he would give up nothing to try to run statewide. Or someone on Scott Walker’s team. I would think there are several good choices available now that the Republicans won everything in Wisconsin this cycle.

That’s the sort of lunacy that usually sees people committed to the crazy house.
Oh, and the only OTHER human being on the planet to have a socialist health care system named after him, communist Barack Obama, used RomneyCare as the blueprint for “success”
So, no only did this poor excuse for a governor destroy health care in the Bay State, he sowed the seeds for the destruction of the entire nation’s health care system, which was the best in the world.
Kings, Prime Ministers, world leaders of all kind come to America for treatment, because their own socialized health care, their version of RomneyCare, sucks so bad they are afraid to use it!
Oh, and this failed governor ran on creating jobs. How did “Mr Financial Whiz” do? After his first year Massachusetts was dead last, 50 out of 50 in job creation. Thankfully Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast, so no jobs were being created. This allowed Willard to skyrocket all of the way to 47th place by the time he abandoned his job to run for POTUS.
Romney is a political opportunist and a coward. Palin will be starting her second term before that loser weighs in on the subject at hand.
He’s not a leader. Hell, he’s not even a good follower.
The only real use for Romney is as a punchline.
I’ll give ya this though steveegg, at least you had the guts to put your candidate out there, even knowing he was one of the worst governors in the country.
That’s a lot more than can be said for the run of the mill HA troll.
One has to respect you for that, even if you are an idiot.

The “Pappy-John the Libertarian American Greatness Act of 2011″ should be submitted for consideration by the 112th Congress.

Good grief man!
I’m sure you could have made your point without all this.
Do you want conversations, or flamewars?
This sort of thing detracts from persuasiveness.
Rather than think about good things about Sarah Palin, people are thinking how angry you sound at Romney and anyone who doesn’t agree with you.
Just a suggestion. Heck I agree with you on substance most of the time, but damn son!

You don’t hang out here much, obviously.

No, I’ve been around for years.
Just thought I would take a chance and give it a shot. :)

I have some reservations with Ryan’s Entitlement proposal.
But since Palin endorses it and Sen. Demint is a kinda like it, then … I’ll support it then.
I only trust these people.
