Drudge teaser: Wikileaks tool to be named Time’s “Person of the Year”
posted at 5:56 pm on December 7, 2010 by Allahpundit
Just a single line at the top of the page, but it’s all too plausible and Assange is, after all, leading Time’s online balloting. By a lot, in fact. In second place, trailing by more than 60,000 votes, is Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan; in third with less than half of Assange’s votes is, er, Lady Gaga. (Not the first time either that Turkish readers have freeped the hell out of a dopey Time poll.) That’s actually a perfect top three for our age. One’s an Islamist cretin, another’s a shameless fame whore pandering for media attention with bizarre hairstyles and transgressive stunts, and the third is Lady Gaga. Look in the mirror, world. Like what you see?
Assuming Drudge is right, the most awful part of choosing Assange isn’t, I think, that they’re rewarding an enemy of the U.S. — that’s no surprise — but that this guarantees an unbearably ponderous navel-gazing cover story about secrecy in the Internet age and state power against decentralized international actors and What It All Means to you. If they’re dead set on using Wikileaks as a peg for that, why don’t they make Wikileaks itself the “Organization of the Year” instead of singling out Assange? For that matter, why not make Bradley Manning “Person of the Year” instead? Answer, of course: Because Time doesn’t have the stones to do that given the backlash it would generate, and after all, Manning’s story as a lowly private who stole some documents isn’t nearly as gripping as a foreign-born super-hacker waging war on the U.S. government while on the run across Europe. In fact, watching the throng of photographers outside Assange’s bail hearing this morning, I wondered what would have happened if he had been released and the press were free to chase their new idol around, squealing ecstatically all the way. It would have been like the opening of “A Hard Day’s Night.”
I won’t bother suggesting that the tea party or one of its leaders, like Beck, should be “Person of the Year” since having to write that feature would seem too cruel a task to inflict on poor liberal Time writers. But there’s actually an excellent suggestion floating around in their online poll: “The Unemployed American.” Unemployment’s going to be a very big deal for a very long time (see Bernanke’s comments on “60 Minutes” recently for thoughts on that), and meanwhile, for all the bluster, no true bombshells have yet dropped from the Wikileaks docs. Maybe if the Unemployed American colored his hair white and started mumbling semi-coherently about “crushing bastards” in the U.S. government, that’d qualify him.
Now, take five minutes and read Michael Moynihan’s post about how far some Assange apologists are willing to go to defend him on those Swedish sex assault charges. And by “some apologists,” I mean Keith Olbermann.
Update: Olby does the right thing.

Have you read the charges AP? Have you read the news reports of the charges?
The two victims decided they were raped, days later, after they found out about each other. Rape is supposed to be defined as a man forcing himself, on a woman. It is not supposed to be defined as days later regrets from a one night stand.
The story if absolutely true, show that Assange is a shallow son of a B. But he’s not a rapist. The woman said wear a condom, he said no. She didn’t get out of bed. She didn’t say no raincoat, no playtime. She continued. The second woman claims he sabotaged the condom.
Now, days later, they discuss their individual episodes with the Rake, then they decide that they were raped. When they find out that they were not the only one night stand he had while in town.
That isn’t rape by my definition. AP, if it is your definition, you better hope all your old partners think fondly of you. If not, you could be facing criminal charges.
Now, why are you so desperate to get this guy that you’ll support a perversion of the criminal justice system? You’re worse than the juries of legend that assume that the black man had to be guilty of something. You don’t care if he’s guilty, you just want him punished for anything.
If this is the direction of the Conservative’s. I want off the train thanks. If we’re turning into the party of lynch the messenger, and rape is anger at the betrayal of cad, then I’ll go talk to the Libertarians. I find their pro drug positions less offensive than this.

You have to remember tho…Time’s “Man/Person/Persons of the Year” isn’t always meant to mean a good or great person…but the person who had the biggest impact of the year… good or bad.
If I remember correctly, 2001 went to Rudy, but Time had planned on making bin-Laden MotY. But they didn’t in the end, due to major protests against it.

They don’t want in the European Union anymore the last claim to the U.S.’s Turkish roots was when they claimed a Rev War Patriot named “Salem” was Muslim because of his name LOL!
Oh and they tried to claim that the Cherokee were descendants of Turks because of their head gear. Wrong again.

Kevin Rudd pledges Assange to get ‘proper’ consular help from Australia
December 08, 2010 9:59AM
===========================
AUSTRALIA will “absolutely” give consular support to arrested WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange despite heavy criticism of his actions from the Gillard government.
But Mr Rudd today stressed the government would “absolutely” be supporting Mr Assange and ensuring his legal rights were protected.
“I’m the Foreign Minister of Australia and I’m responsible for the consular wellbeing of all Australians and, therefore, I just want to make it absolutely clear that, first of all, Mr Assange has contacted the Australian Consul-General in London and asked for consular support.
“We have confirmed that we’ll provide that, as we’d do for all Australian citizens.
“We’ll be providing him with a letter soon which indicates we’ll be prepared to provide consular visits and any other level of consular support concerning his wellbeing and his legal rights. That is the proper thing to do for any Australian citizen.
“What we do with Australians in strife anywhere in the world is that we take the view that our responsibility is to ensure the consular rights and legal rights of all Australians abroad are protected. And that includes Mr Assange.”
While he dodged repeated questions on comments made by the Prime Minister about WikiLeaks’ legal status, Mr Rudd did say the Swedish charges went “to a different range of matters” from anything WikiLeaks had done.

Don’t shoot messenger for revealing uncomfortable truths
December 08, 2010 12:00AM
===========================
And Australians should observe with no pride the disgraceful pandering to these sentiments by Julia Gillard and her government. The powers of the Australian government appear to be fully at the disposal of the US as to whether to cancel my Australian passport, or to spy on or harass WikiLeaks supporters. The Australian Attorney-General is doing everything he can to help a US investigation clearly directed at framing Australian citizens and shipping them to the US.
Prime Minister Gillard and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have not had a word of criticism for the other media organisations. That is because The Guardian, The New York Times and Der Spiegel are old and large, while WikiLeaks is as yet young and small.
We are the underdogs. The Gillard government is trying to shoot the messenger because it doesn’t want the truth revealed, including information about its own diplomatic and political dealings.
Has there been any response from the Australian government to the numerous public threats of violence against me and other WikiLeaks personnel? One might have thought an Australian prime minister would be defending her citizens against such things, but there have only been wholly unsubstantiated claims of illegality. The Prime Minister and especially the Attorney-General are meant to carry out their duties with dignity and above the fray. Rest assured, these two mean to save their own skins. They will not.

What about Scott Brown?
His win in January set a lot of the narrative and was an indication how far things could go.
The fact people called him a RINO and his back/forth with Sarah Palin, get to the narrative of Republican divide.
He seems to capture the aspects so well. The Republican victory, the Republican turmoil, the Tea Party…
He might not be a perfect Senator, but in many ways he represents the story of the year, and becomes a great messenger for its events.
Wikileaks really isn’t that big a deal in terms of what has happened. If it led to wars or something, that would be something else. To often, I think people look to the end of the year to decide the big story. Sometimes the narrative is for the entire year.

And I’d rather see him fry for his real crimes.

I do think he should be persecuted to the full extent of the law for the terrible things he is doing. He should be charged with murder for every informant who’s identity he publicized, for instance.

WTF?!? Why not PFC Bradley Manning, that pathetic, miserable, sniveling little $hit ball of sub-human excrement, as MOTY? HE did far more damage to long term US interests than Julie-boy. I’d send BOTH of these vermin to the gallows … but only as a televised PPV event, with the proceeds going to reduce the deficit.

He must be an enemy of the U.S. after all the ruling class and their hanger-ons say he is, so it must be true.

On portlandon’s list of “honorees” he puts all the democrats except LBJ in bold letters because he obviously hates democrats but why not Johnson too ? After all, He’s the guy who started welfare !! And they call Obama a socialist !!Which he is, but what about LBJ and his “great society” programs ???

You really get the impression that Time Magazine, once a respected and reliable news magazine, is now hellbent for leather to totally discredit themselves into oblivion by even considering this schmuck Assange as a candidate for Person Of The Year.
If they go through with it, they will be finished once and for all. The only thing the pages of their magazine will be good for after that will be to either line the bottom of a bird cage or housebreak puppies.

Assange is, after all, leading Time’s online balloting. I put my vote for the turkish guy. I was going lady gaga but feel she is to far behind.

Well of course he will be. And don’t forget, the Swedish get to give this alleged rapist (in Sweeden) a Nobel Peace Prize too. Why? Because both of these entities (Time and The Nobel Committee) simply hate America worse than the jihadist do.

Does anyone read that rag anymore? Other than the obvious losers you mentioned of course.
I won’t even pick one up sitting in an office waiting for an appointment.
