Angry Obama on tax cuts: GOP are “hostage takers,” liberals are “sanctimonious”; Update: Pelosi didn’t know deal would be announced?

posted at 4:14 pm on December 7, 2010 by Allahpundit

Ace’s co-blogger DrewM had the best take on this afternoon’s presser turned mini-meltdown: “Man, if Obama is Spock, he’s in the middle of the Pon Farr.” Two clips for you, the first of him snottily reprising Bob Menendez’s terrorist analogy by comparing Republicans to “hostage-takers” on taxes — and then using that to justify his decision to negotiate with them(!). Note to The One: Probably not a good idea for America’s top law enforcement officer and military commander-in-chief to broadcast the fact that he’ll come to the table only if you play rough enough with him.

The second clip’s the one to watch, though. He put his presidency on the line to grant the left its eternal wish of universal health care, and they’ve rewarded him ever since by … shrieking endlessly about the public option. His bitter annoyance at their perceived ingratitude is palpable, and with good reason: As Philip Klein notes, tax hikes come and tax hikes go but new welfare state entitlements are forever.

Liberals are enraged at Obama for caving into Republicans on the tax rates, but as a conservative, if I had to choose either one, I would have much preferred letting the tax rates expire to creating the massive new health care entitlement. Over the decades, tax rates have gone up and down, but politicians — not even Ronald Reagan — have made a dent in entitlement spending. National health care has long been a dream of liberals, and while they didn’t get all the way with this one piece of legislation, it does put us on the road to becoming a European-style welfare state. Its existence also makes it impossible to reform entitlements on market-friendly terms, given that health care is the key factor that’s driving up the cost of government.

People have spoke of Obama as the liberal Reagan. Well, if Reagan pursued a strategy of “starving the beast” to force spending cuts down the road, maybe Obama’s strategy is “feeding the beast,” knowing that if lawmakers don’t curb the growth in entitlements, then tax rates will go back up anyway.

I hope The One savored every second of finally getting to unload on them here because he did himself no favors in quelling the revolt among his base. The phone lines are reportedly melting down at the White House from liberals calling in to complain about the deal and even such stalwart allies as top union crony Richard Trumka are issuing angry statements vowing to oppose it. More than a dozen House Democrats have already signed a letter stating that they’ll vote no, in fact, raising the question of whether the votes are there to push the deal through. Presumably they are in the House: Paul Ryan says he’s happy enough with it and Blue Dogs (especially ones who were swept away last month) should enjoy flipping Pelosi and progressives the bird by voting yes. Are there 18 Democrats willing to vote for cloture in the Senate, though? Manchin, Nelson, Lieberman, Feingold, and Webb voted with the GOP on the show votes this past weekend, so presumably they’re in; McCaskill, Tester, Lincoln, Pryor, and Mark Warner are all probably easy pick-ups too. We need eight more Democrats on top of that to make it happen. Maybe lame ducks Dodd and Dorgan? Conrad and Durbin too?

Silver lining here for The One: By alienating both righties and lefties, he’s finally fulfilled the promise of post-partisanship from Campaign 2008. Great work, champ! Exit question: Aren’t you glad this deal wasn’t struck before Election Day? Can you imagine how amazingly the left would have demagogued it as an all-purpose explanation for the GOP landslide in the House? What a comforting lie that would have been, in lieu of the unpleasant truth. Click the images to watch.

Update: An ominous note: Harry Reid says the deal needs more work.

Update: I wonder if this is true or just Madam Speaker’s Minority Leader Pelosi’s way of distancing herself from the deal as the left freaks out:

“We have some unease,” Pelosi says of Obama plan & admits to being in the dark: “we didn’t realize…agreement was going to be announced.”

Why would The One push it out there before giving Nancy a heads up?

Well, not really. ObamaCare was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Our entitlements are unsustainable and the left knows it … that’s why some are screaming like mad to tax the “evil rich” even more, thinking that’ll keep’em afloat.

I have said that obama is not, as much as he tries to claims that is, not a leader, but a follower. The dems lead him around the first two years and the GOP will make him go bak to IL in the next 2. The problem is that he is not governing from the center or left, he’s just doesn’t know how to govern.
The GOP has been saying that Nov 2012 cannot come soon enough, now it’s funny that the leftists are saying the same thing now

ConservativePartyNow on December 7, 2010 at 4:30 PM

Oh wait I’m quite sure it will take the WOMEN of the GOP to do that the men have only the balls they were born with.

dhunter on December 7, 2010 at 4:30 PM

The key to making triangulation a success is to come across in the following 4 ways:

1-That you, as the President, came up with any compromise in the first place

2-That you, as the President, came up with the better end of the compromise

3-That you, as the President, understand, respect, and COMPASSIONATELY care about the reservations that are held by the people who oppose you

Those are 3 very simple principles that add “meat” to tringulation.

It is not enough to merely compromise… that is only half the battle (just ask Carter after the elections of 78, who attempted to compromise). The other half of the battle is salesmanship… that is what will truly rally your base, passify your opposition, and strengthen your support from the “middle.”

This tax deal should be a SLAM DUNK for President Obama in his attempt to gain Independent voters.

However…

Did you see the presser from both last night and today?

This is not a man who owns this tax deal or came up with it. And this is not man, by the admission of even Ezra Klein who supports this tax deal, who feels he got the better end of the stick.

However… what is most troubling is that this is not a man who is bleeds the concerns of those who opposes him and smiles with the warmth of a teddy bear when he is faced with mounting criticism.

Instead, this is a man who referred to his Republican opposition as “hostage takers,” and his OWN BASE as the hypocritcally rightgeous in labeling them “sanctimonious.”

YOU CANNOT TRIANGULATE THIS WAY!!!

This should be a political winner for Obama, but the rhetoric and near meltdown I saw 2 hours ago suggest he is about to nab defeat from the jaws of victory.

Wow.

Indy82 on December 7, 2010 at 4:30 PM

If the Dems kill this deal and there’s not enough time to strike up a new one before January 1, they’re gonna get rolled in 2012. Obama’s already gone public with the deal, so if they successfully block it, they’ll make him look weak and powerless and they’ll be the ones who are responsible for the middle class getting hit with a huge tax hike in 2011.

David in ATL on December 7, 2010 at 4:35 PM

This is so bizarre.

A few weeks ago, I and a colleague discussed what the President would do after the election — would he fight the Republicans over taxes, or would he bow to the inevitable, while smiling and taking credit for a bipartisan agreement.

Instead he went with the agreement — and then complained about it. Whaaaa. . . ? That possibility never occurred to us.

Politics 101 is that when something is going to happen, put the best possible face on it and sell the hell out of it. What are they thinking over there?

Frank Rich is the one who got this “hostage” narrative started. Does no one in the Democrat Party get how “WEAK” this makes the President of the United States look? Barack Obama is the Leader of the Free World. Not according to the Professional Left. Someone should check with Moochelle to see if sour grapes are good for Barry.

John Edwards with a fist pump and a furtive high five.

AP said:
More than a dozen House Democrats have already signed a letter stating that they’ll vote no, in fact, raising the question of whether the votes are there to push the deal through.

At first I thought we’d only get to see the Dems FAIL to pass a continuation of the tax rates, now we may get to see them actively vote against them? Awesomely AWESOME!

Thoughts and prayers out to the Edwards family.

WisRich on December 7, 2010 at 4:57 PM

Why would The One push it out there before giving Nancy a heads up?

I dunno, but this is as ugly as any of us have ever seen it…isn’t it?

ted c on December 7, 2010 at 4:58 PM

oh no. I’m sorry to hear Mrs. Edwards has passed away. My mother in law is, very unfortunately, waiting for a mastectomy scheduled in 1wk. This isn’t helpful.

Two clips for you, the first of him snottily reprising Bob Menendez’s terrorist analogy by comparing Republicans to “hostage-takers” on taxes — and then using that to justify his decision to negotiate with them(!).

One major difference: the Republicans were elected by voters in their districts!

To take the “hostage-taker” analogy a little further, the Iranian hostage-takers at the American Embassy suddenly caved and released the hostages the day Ronald Reagan was inaugurated in 1981, after they had strung Carter along for 444 days. Before the new sheriff comes to town, the bullies run for cover, like Obama. Remember “I won” and “The difference between 1994 and 2010 is now you have me”? The Dems are probably pining for Bill Clinton right now…

One major difference: hostage-takers demand money to give hostages freedom. Republicans in Congress want to give people freedom and demand LESS money.
