Video: Servicemembers boo Griffin for attacking Bristol Palin

posted at 12:15 pm on December 6, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Here’s a little change of pace for a mid-day Monday, courtesy of TV Squad, which clipped a short segment of VH1′s tribute to America’s fighting men and women. Former Levi Johnston confidante Kathy Griffin decided to entertain them by taking potshots at the mother of Johnston’s child, Bristol Palin, by calling her fat. The audience took a few potshots at Griffin in return:

“We got two words,” Griffin continued. “BRISTOL … PALIN.” Ah. We see. Kathy was performing in front of a huge crowd of soldiers for ‘VH1 Divas: Salute the Troops.’ (Sun., 9PM ET on VH1). But as soon as she mentioned the dreaded words “Bristol Palin,” the boos started rolling in from the troops. Wait. What are we booing again? Bristol? Kathy’s sailor outfit? … Kathy’s comedy routine?

It turned out that the troops were jeering Ms. Griffin’s routine. “You’re gonna like this,” she continued gamely. “[Bristol is] the only contestant in the history of the show to actually gain weight. … She gained like 30 pounds a week. I swear to God, it was fantastic — she’s like the white ‘Precious.’”

As the cat-calls continued to escalate in volume, Kathy kept on going: “You can boo louder than that!” she said, cupping her hand to her ear. “War is hell,” she concluded. We don’t expect her to receive any sort of medal, but Griffin didn’t abandon her post — she boldly (or foolishly) stood there in the face of angry incoming attacks from the audience.

Well, if this is the best VH1 can find to entertain our troops, then they’re obviously having a problem attracting talent anyway. A Kathy Griffin appearance would be hell for most people anyway. Who ever found her entertaining in the first place? She may be the only person to gain notoriety by attaching herself to Johnston, rather than the other way around.

Anyway, kudos to our men and women in uniform who didn’t take the bait and showed a small measure of their courage in booing this disgraceful personal attack. Maybe Griffin could take a lesson from them.

In August 2010, Johnston announced that he will be running in the October 2011 election for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska.[1][2] Johnston stated: “Whether I win or not win, I want Tripp to look up to me and see what I’ve done and be proud of his dad.”[44]

The current mayor, Verne E. Rupright, responded to Johnston’s announcement: “Well, it is a little early to declare. Usually most wait until the year the seat is up. But since I am nearly old enough to be Levi’s grandfather I think it would be wise for him to get a high school diploma and keep his clothes on. The voters like that!”[45]

Can this be an open celebrity thread? I assume Griffin was placed here for traffic -

There’s a celebrity AIDS campaign where Kardashian and Usher and Gaga and others have gone “DEAD” until a million dollars has been raised. ONE million, not one hundred million. Well, they we all supposed to stop Facebooking and Twittering, etc. And this has been such a fail that after 4 days they’ve raised less that half and one or two have already broken the no-Twit rule.

This fugly biotch ought to know better.

I don’t like KG’s politics, but I find her very funny and frank. I have no use for BP, but KG mocking her like this is sad and desperate. KG has struggled with her weight, and she gets lots of ridicule for how naturally ugly she is.

How sad. She does not need to tear down BP for her weight. If she really wanted, there are other things to take her to task for, but this is just sad.

Gob on December 6, 2010 at 12:29 PM

The only work of her’s that I like was when she played Alice on the Dilbert animated series. But then she wrote none of it so.

KG: Yes, Keef, he’s a little fatty, fat, fatty, too, just like his “big” sister. (Get it, Keef? “Big” sister…as in Bristol is a fatty, fat, fatty, fat, fatty.)

they are winning the hearts and minds of america. Palin’s politcal outreach to the pop culture is paying massive dividends. 2 years ago there would have been no booing. In fact it would have been “uncool” to like the Palin’s now it is becomign “uncool” to bash them…..a really amazing turn around and most of it due to Gov Palin’s ability to “retail” politic at the mass media level.

Trying to remember back when I was in the Air Force and trying to imagine what it was like in my brain in those days, would I have cheered for a ”Snooki”? (I doubt it) Who was the Gulf War version of her? Was there one? What I wanted to see was PRETTY girls, women who could actually DO something, like maybe sing? I remember Whitney Houston was big for that. I was also hoping Damn Yankees would do a military base tour, considering they were very supportive of us.

tigerinexile on December 6, 2010 at 12:53 PM

Kathy Griffin has always about as funny as a broomstick with a smile painted on it, and is just as wooden.

The fact that she kept up the attacks on Bristol despite that it sounded like the troops were getting ready to give her an up close and personal demonstration of what they have leveling at the Taliban these days proves she is also a complete numbskull.

Why VH-1 chose to bring her on this show is a complete mystery. But in the event she is ever invited to entertain the troops again anytime in the near future (though I highly doubt she ever will be after this fiasco),she may want to look at a couple of Bob Hope USO Tour videos first, just to see how something like that is done right.

pilamaye on December 6, 2010 at 12:53 PM

As the cat-calls continued to escalate in volume, Kathy kept on going: “You can boo louder than that!” she said, cupping her hand to her ear.

So her schtick is to say nasty things about people the audience likes, then taunt the audience for not booing loudly enough? Maybe that’s why I’ve barely even heard of this “comedienne.”

Right on! Sarah proves to be a better tactician than Rove. I have been impressed with the number of people, most of whom are not very engaged in the political struggles and are not too up on things, who have come away from watching her Alaska series shows with admiration for her. They are identifying with her and her family which means the more she is unfairly attacked, the more these people will bond with her. Result: Sarah wins again. Left vs Right is evolving into Good vs Evil.

IronDioPriest on December 6, 2010 at 12:46 PM

It has always been so. the left has just been able to hide their evil better. Porno, drugs, welfare, free sex, destruction of the family, class warfare etc is no different than

sloth=====welfare,2 years of unemployment benifits etc

envy=======class warfare
Gluttony====increased food stamps, school lunches, WIC etc
Greed=======higher taxes, increases in their power
Wrath/anger====anger directed at anyone that does not agree with them, hate of their country, their way of life, technology

Lust===premartial sex, free love, legalizattion of pimps and hoes. passing out condoms, birth control, abortion. teenage sex education, porno, etc

Pride====elitism we are better than you, we know bette rthan you

The left is text book evil. there is no debate on that. Sadly the GOP establishment is also anymore. And it explains why both hate flyover country.

Some comedienne mad a reference to Palin’s child with down’s syndrome at a Quentin Tarantion roast. The comedienne said something to the effect of, “Tarantino produces more retarded things than Sara Palin’s vagina”. Something to that effect.

76United on December 6, 2010 at 1:12 PM

Ah, please. Griffin gets off on this stuff. The audience would have done better to have sat there in stone silence until she was done, or not to have attended the event at all. As soon as Johnston stopped garnering press for her, she dropped him as a sidekick. She’ll just use the booing in her “act” in another venue.

Frankly, it’s disturbing what passes for comedy these days anyway. (hint: Kathy Griffin ain’t it.)

simon on December 6, 2010 at 1:13 PM

It should go without saying that whenever Sarah gets up in front of a group to speak after saying hello she always makes mention of our men and women in uniform – always. And she means it, too.

Anyone who is paying attention should have noticed that, plus the fact that her son is in the Army and that insulting the sister of a fellow soldier is just as bad as insulting your own sister.
