Palin rejects Tea Party Nation idea of running for RNC chair

posted at 5:43 pm on December 6, 2010 by Allahpundit

Didn’t really make sense for either side.

“I respect the desire to have someone in charge of the RNC who understands the wishes of the conservative grassroots and understands that power resides with the people and not the vested interests in D.C.,” Palin said in a statement provided to CNN. “However, the primary role of the RNC chair seems be that of fundraiser-in-chief, and there are others who would probably be much more comfortable asking people for money than I would be, and they would definitely enjoy it more.”…

Despite sporadic online chatter about drafting her for the job, the prospect of Palin serving as RNC chairman – with its day-to-day rigors of managing the committee’s 168 members – was never a workable one.

Though Palin has raised millions for her political action committee, most of it has come in through small donations via the internet. The job of the RNC’s next chairman, meanwhile, will be to spend countless hours on the phone raising money from the kind of high-dollar donors who stopped giving to the committee under the leadership of Michael Steele.

ABC has a copy of the letter to Palin from TPN leader Judson Phillips, whom you may remember as the guy who hired Palin to speak at the first tea party convention and/or the guy who recently praised the idea of voting being limited to property owners. Sample quote: “We need someone who will put conservatives in control of the party apparatus, not RINOs.” Granted, no one could get grassroots donors excited again about the RNC the way she could, and running a major party organization would polish her presidential credentials. But how exactly would she empower conservatives at the RNC? As the fundraiser-in-chief, she’d have to be extra cautious about alienating donors from either wing of the party; that means no jumping into races on the side of tea-party insurgent candidates, and it would oblige her to campaign on behalf of RINOs if/when they emerge as nominees. Beyond that, I’m not sure having Palin at the top would be a net gain for the RNC financially. She’d add a ton of small grassroots donors (as she’s been doing all year at SarahPAC), but the RNC’s wealthy contributors — or rather, the few wealthy contributors it has left — who don’t like her would bail out and donate instead to Rove’s group or to some other PAC. And of course she’d be blamed for that, even though having her as its spokesman would make the RNC instantly relevant again.

The other problem, needless to say, is that running for RNC chair now means not running for president in 2012. If she were inclined to wait until 2016, a few years at the RNC spent building bridges to candidates and state party leaders would make it easier to construct an organization for a presidential run later. (She’s been doing more of that at SarahPAC lately via donations.) But if she did a bang-up job at the RNC and helped elect a Republican president, she’d be locked out of running herself until 2020 at the earliest. And when she did eventually run, her “outsider” brand would be compromised by having led the most insider-y Republican organization in existence. Meanwhile, the RNC would be forced to defend every last Tweet and Facebook post, and after spinning for Steele over the past two years, I doubt they want to have to play defense for another chairman. Like I say, just doesn’t make sense for either side. What am I missing here?

What’s that supposed to mean? She’s not up to the day-to-day rigors of managing a committee?

If someone was interested in her fulfilling a position, why would they not approach her privately? Instead, they pull this public nonsense. I have no doubts that Palin knows what she wants to do and is not soliciting suggestions from organizations.

I took it to mean she would be tied down to an office in a semi-regular desk job with thankless administrative duties instead of being able to maneuver however she wishes. Also it would require her to pick up and move and I don’t see her doing that unless her new address is 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Sure she could do the job well.

If you are both right and I am wrong, why did she say no thanks?

She turned it down because that isn’t the type of position she wants to have. Remember all those comments about the “political machine in DC, both parties” ect, ect?

She does not want a position where you are elected by 168 DC bigshots, in order to spend all your time begging for money from other big shots.

What kind of a genuine “outsider” runs for RNC Chair?

I never thought she would want that job, or that they would want her. Now, this is the first time I’ve heard anything about it from Sarah herself. Confirms how I perceived it all along.

Brian1972 on December 6, 2010 at 6:16 PM

No you fool it wouldn’t be.

Here’s what’s required of the RNC chair:

http://chooseyourchairman.com/what-were-looking-for/

The Chair is not supposed to be a public figure. Not supposed to have policy positions. They aren’t supposed to be a leader insofar as a movement is concerned…they’re supposed to be the workhorse behind the scenes who keeps the party machine moving.

This would be a poor, POOR fit for someone like Palin.

powerpro on December 6, 2010 at 6:27 PM

Barbor requested Priebus run.Priebus helped turn Wi red in the last election and is a consertative. He also helped Steele become the RNC chair in 2008.

State GOP Chairman Reince Priebus says he will run for Michael Steele’s position.

I agree why should Sarah pack and leave Alaska to run a job for people who don’t beleive in her or her ideas. The RNC chair is controlled by the Rino in the party anyway. Why a consertative like Priebus or any consertative would run is foolish to me.

gary4205 on December 6, 2010 at 6:59 PM

President Obama noticed the election returns and is trying to appear more moderate, while radicals help by criticizing him a bit from the Left.

In his first Thanksgiving Proclamation, President Obama left out God. No surprise from a fellow who privately told supporters that economically challenged Americans cling to God (and guns) out of bitterness and leaves out a reference to “the Creator” when he mentions those “inalienable rights” proclaimed in America’s Declaration of Independence.

But, President Obama still wants to be re-elected after taking a shellacking in the 2010 election, so last month…GOD MADE A COMEBACK IN THE ANNUAL PRESIDENTIAL THANKSGIVING PROCLAMATION!

That’s not enough, of course. The Obama magic stopped working. Most Americans do — or soon will — realize that “progressives” like President Obama are secular extremists and, as such, are not representative of America.

So ACORN apologist Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, a failed Democrat gubernatorial candidate, just wrote an article for the Washington Post titled “Sarah Palin is wrong about John F. Kennedy, religion and politics” (www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/03/AR2010120303209_2.html?sid=ST2010120305853).

Team Obama is taking Palin seriously, and thus a female Kennedy is targeting Palin.

KKT waited until the second sentence to note that she is a niece of the late President John F. Kennedy and then proceeded to castigate Palin for sharing her views on JFK’s 1960 speech to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association.

Praise would be welcome, but not criticism.

In her latest book Palin praised Mitt Romney for his speech on government and religion during the last presidential campaign.

Palin and Romney believe that religious values properly inform public policy and freedom of religion is not freedom from religion.

They are right.

Palin had the temerity to blow the whistle on the public school indoctrination to which she was subjected on the JFK speech.

KKT put it this way: “Palin writes that when she was growing up, she was taught that Kennedy’s speech had ‘succeeded in the best possible way: It reconciled public service and religion without compromising either.’ Now, however, she says she has revisited the speech and changed her mind. She finds it ‘defensive . . . in tone and content’ and is upset that Kennedy, rather than presenting a reconciliation of his private faith and his public role, had instead offered an ‘unequivocal divorce of the two.’”

Palin is right. The Constitution was intended to provide for institutional separation of church and state, not to mandate governmental neutrality between religion and irreligion.

she did her job. she stopped the marxist from winning the seat. she exposed the lying sucking pond scum in the RINO establishment for all to see. I’m just sad she couldn’t stop both marxists in the end..

Palin shaped the narrative, defined the camapign, nationalized the midterms, traget and ousted dems, lead the opposition against Obama almost every day of 2010. deal with it.

Running for Prez would be such a grueling undertaking for her and especially for her family that I’d bet she won’t do it. If we were all appalled at how she was treated as McCain’s running mate and since, just imagine if she were to run for Prez. Still, she’s become stronger as a result, but has her family?

jeanie on December 6, 2010 at 6:59 PM

Can’t compare really. The McCain team of geniuses ran that campaign. They are some of the most inept human beings on the planet.

When she runs this time she’ll do it her way.

BTW, from what I understand she already has a green light from the family. They want her to be President.

Haha, if I’m a ‘nista, you’re a BoehnerHead.

How about no more Career Legislator candidates for President?

One of the things that really got me sad in 2008 was when it was McCain on our side, and Obama vs. Hillary on the other.

That meant a guaranteed Senator in the White House.

Governors are much better candidates.

18-20 dems she targeted lost. Before Palin resigned the GOp establishment was holding free pizz events with Jeb and mitt telling the GOp bas eit was time to move past Reagan and embrace the new reality. The Gop party was in hiding, no caniddates wanted to run up against the Obama “magic” most of the “best” candidate sdeclined to run. then Palin resigned in Jul 3rd 2009 and the world changed. she started to oppose Obama and his polices. at first the GOp establishment laughed her off, they dissed her at public dinners. Palin continued. she raised more money for candidates and her Pac than anyone else. She fought every Obama policy on principle. Her primary picks made the general more conservative. By Nov 2010 the GOp Dc elites where saying the samething Palin has been saying since day one. there was no more talk of moving beyonf Reagan. instead the GOp establishment was trying to say Reagan’s name as much as possible in their campaign ads.

Palin went to the Tea party and brought them to the GOp by use of the primaries. the Tea party candidates winning the primary allowed the TEA party to embrace the GOP.

Without Palin the GOp would be a small regional party of core social cons fighting a small holding battle in Ga somewhere.

Do y’all think Sarah’s heart is in it? Or would she be answering some kind of call to duty?

jeanie on December 6, 2010 at 7:14 PM

If Palin enters the race most of Huck’s grassroots funding will dry up.

EXACTLY. Without Palin the Tea Partyu would have run a bunch of third party candidates and it would have been a disaster of epic proportions.

It’s funny how some people live out in fantasy land and simply cannot accept reality.

Oh yeah. She’s already said if she gets in she will be in it to win it.

This is a chick who player her championship basketball game on a broken foot, and scored the winning shot.

You tell me!

She’ll be out for blood. I just hope she takes Becker’s rifle instead of Chuck’s!!!

Not so sure, but if she eventually runs I hope you’re right about her reasons. As you may have noticed, I find it hard to conclude that she and her family would joyfully accept the sacrifices a decision to run would entail…especially when other options are plentiful and tempting.
