NFL week 13 open thread

posted at 10:30 am on December 5, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Today is the biggest game on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ schedule, even bigger than the upcoming game against the Jets.  For one thing, the Baltimore Ravens are their main divisional rival, but they’re also tied with the Ravens.  However, since the Ravens won the first game of the series this year — the last game of Ben Roethlisberger’s suspension — another loss would put the Steelers in danger of missing the playoffs.  They’re playing on the road in a marquee game, which usually brings out the best in the Steelers.  It should be a low-scoring game, and if the Steelers’ defense steps up, they should win 17-13.

Last Sunday I went 2-1 after nine straight correct predictions, which brings my season record to 44-29.  Let’s see if I can keep the momentum:

  • oBills at Vikings – The Vikes surprised me last week by beating the Redskins on the road.  They’re still not playing great, though, and the Bills play tougher than their 2-9 record.  If the Vikes ease up, the Bills could dump an unpleasant surprise on Minnesota at the Metrodome today.  I’d bet, though, that new head coach Leslie Frazier isn’t taking anything for granted.  I’ll pick Frazier to remain undefeated with the Vikes topping the Bills 26-13.
  • Redskins at Giants – The Giants have hit a tough patch, but the Redskins lost to the Vikes at home.  Expect the Giants to get well in a hurry in this rivalry, beating Washington 31-14.
  • Jaguars at Titans – This should be a good game, even though neither team will be going anywhere at the end of this season.  I think the Titans will find a way to win this, but it will be close.  27-24, Tennessee.
  • Rams at Cardinals – The Cardinals stunk it up last week at home, while the Rams don’t play well on the road.  However, the Rams are improving this year while Arizona clearly is not.  It will come down to the last drive, but the Rams will pull off a mild upset and get to .500 with a 21-17 win.
  • Jets at Patriots – This is the game of the week, and the biggest of the rivalry games this weekend.  Both teams are 9-2, both lead the AFC, and both will make it to the playoffs.  The Jets will get there as a wild card, though, because the Patriots will be too tough at home, 24-14.

Call this one the “Felon Bowl”

We’ve got a rapist in Rapistberger and a murderer in Ray Lewis on the other side. Should be an interesting game.

Capitalist Infidel on December 5, 2010 at 10:33 AM

With that broken foot and the injuries to the Steelers’ O-line, Big Ben better have his wheelchair moving around the field in a hurry if he wants to avoid the Ravens’ pass rush tonight.

I think you are giving the Steelers too much credit Ed. They have not played well of late almost losing to Buffalo. I think the Ravens will beat them (or should I say,I hope so) 20-17.

“The Felon Bowl”. Yeah you’re a funny guy. Neither one has a record yet you persist on telling tall tales. AS much as I dislike the Steelers, I wouldn’t go as far as you have.

JohnnyD on December 5, 2010 at 10:41 AM

I don’t have a clue why, but it seems that the Stillers have not played well in the night games this year. They certainly can beat the Ravens, but I can’t be optimistic that they will.

Amen brother, the SEC has been overrated the past two years. They clean up on poor out of conference games against scrub teams and the East Coast bias of ESPN promotion. TCU and Boise State last year were better than Alabama and Florida.

Couldn’t agree more Rovin.. That quarterback at Auburn is fun to watch and seems to be a very likable guy; however, Auburn will not stay in this game very long. This Oregon team has what might be the best College offense I have ever seen, and their defense is not bad either.

Are Florida International, Louisiana Tech, Devry and Tulane all SEC teams? The vaunted SEC plays these teams every year.

Your SEC homer response ususally is “because the SEC beats each other up in conference games” which is a cop out. the Pac-10 plays Arkansas, Notre Dame, Ohio State in OOC games.

Kaseem Osgood, a special teams star, left this year and really hurt the Chargers special teams units. They are ranked first in overall defense and offense and the special teams are improved, which explains 4 straight wins and todays predicted BEATDOWN of the hated Raiders.

CWforFreedom on December 5, 2010 at 10:49 AM

But has Ben ever had to start against them with a bum foot?

I’ve had the same type of foot injury-he better be real careful.

As for tomorrow night’s game, Brady and Belichick have been doing some of the finest cheating of their careers to get to 9-2, but their pass D is awfully suspect. If Sanchez starts passing, the Jets will likely win.

However, I think there is more pressure on the Jets, and not because it’s a road game. That could be an equalizer.

As for my beloved Saints, it should be interesting to see how they manage to play in a snow game-Cincy got dumped on Saturday and it’s snowing out there now.

It’ll also be the epic battle between the Who Dats and the Who Deys. Who Dats should previal.

Jock sniffers don’t like it when you say bad things about their heroes; even if it is painfully true.
Fact is, they probably agree with you but they’d rather not admit the truth; which is they don’t care if Rapistburger is guilty or not. As long as he plays ball and doesn’t get too obviously caught, they can have comfortable deniability.

Guy like Rottencheeseburger will get away with anything short of murder because of his money and fame. All we can hope is that one day his luck will run out, and he’ll pick the wrong woman to pin against the bathroom wall. It will catch up with him..

Hey cane, the Bungles’ Carson Palmer had a career day today, which is why they played the Saints so well. And New Orleans was without RB Pierre Thomas yet again. They definitely showed a lot of guts in not panicking.

More info on the Brownies win in Miami.

Chad Henne had a terrible day. His QB rating was 37.8. None of the Dolphins RBs exceeded 50 yards on the ground.

And for the Brownies, the game hero was Ben Watson, who had 10 catches for an even 100 yards receiving, and a TD. He’s a former New England Patriot, of course.

I think it’s about time for the NFL to expand the rosters by 2-3 players. It’s becoming a sub-standard product. We’re watching 2nd string guards try to play offensive tackle, a practice squad guy at guard, and half the Steelers playbook is in the trash because they have no tight ends. It’s a fiasco.

As a former Bengals receiver, he sure loves the Steelers. Collingsworth jumped the shark with his interview of Kobe Bryant a few years back, claiming American patriotism was over.

dthorny on December 6, 2010 at 12:29 PM

That was one heck of a game last night. Shame the Ravens couldn’t win. But I have to pay respects to Ben Roethlisberger. He’s as strong and as good as [biting lip] Johnny Unitas. No really, Johnny U was always banged up but kept playing. He had a great cadre of running backs and recievers to call on and got the job done.

Now don’t get me wrong, I still don’t like the Steelers just ‘cuz I don’t. But Big Ben? Well, I see him a little different now.

I think the Ravens will beat them (or should I say,I hope so) 20-17.
