Dem senator: Negotiating with the GOP on taxes is almost like negotiating with terrorists

posted at 4:55 pm on December 3, 2010 by Allahpundit

Score one for Mark Halperin: They really are having a collective nervous breakdown over this. In fairness, Menendez isn’t making a moral comparison, just a dimwitted analogy about the perils of appeasing bad behavior (a Democratic first!), but since the media would duly soil itself over a Republican using the same rhetoric, I encourage you to grind his face in this in the comments. One lingering question: If the New Year’s deadline for extending the cuts is what’s creating this terrible “hostage” situation, why didn’t our heavily Democratic majority deal with it earlier this year? And if the answer to that is that those darned Republican terrorists in the Senate would have filibustered, well, we’ll see how much Democrats learn to appreciate “terrorist” tactics when they’re back in the minority come 2013.

Whether they’re being spurred on by poll numbers showing a majority opposed to extending tax cuts for the wealthy or simple crankiness due to their looming loss of power in the House, Dems sure are in a feisty mood today. Claire McCaskill mumbled something this morning about taking up pitchforks if all the tax cuts are extended, which would be cause for an official MSNBC domestic-terror incitement alert had it come from the GOP. And Chuck Schumer — well, just check this out. Via Guy Benson:

Schumer, who handily won re-election this year, acknowledged the anger vented by tea partyers and others during the election but insisted that didn’t extend to upper-income tax cuts.

Voters “did say ‘repeal health care,’ they did say ‘reduce the size of government.’ But not a single one of them from the tea party or anywhere said ‘give tax breaks to the wealthiest,’” Schumer said in a rare moment of candor.

So the midterms were a referendum on repealing ObamaCare, by the Democrats’ own admission? There’s your tax-cut compromise, then: Republicans will agree to let the cuts lapse for households earning over a quarter mil in return for the left agreeing to torpedo our new health-care boondoggle, per the voters’ wishes according to none other than Charles Schumer himself. Make the deal, McConnell!

Douchebag, he actually has the seeds to say that the majority has the responsibility to do what’s “right and good for the country, not something perverse”.

After shoving so much horrid legislation down our collective throats for the last two years, smack in the face of overwhelming public opposition. I hate these people.

Bishop on December 3, 2010 at 5:01 PM

The democrats aren’t negotiating, they’re demanding. They have a long list of demands, like convicts in a prison riot, they’re demanding, and their idea of negotiation is convincing the prison warden to accept something from their list of demands.

AubieJon on December 3, 2010 at 5:02 PM

The notion that these people’s attitudes are so twisted that they thing leaving the tax rates at the level they are now is akin to a “giveaway” to the taxpayers is revolting in the extreme.

They also think WE are the dumb ones.

if this Senator knew a thing, then he’d know that we don’t negotiate with terrorists. At least, we never used to. Even then, if we didn’t he’d probably be saying that we should and that the terrorists would have more virtues than dealing with republicans at least until he got his house blowed up and then he’d be back to saying how dealing with terrorists was like dealing with republicans (and he’d walk back the house being blown up bit).

They can’t get much more corrupt, they have already spent, (stolen) or appropriated hundreds of times more than what their tax increases would raise. The den of theives only exacerbate their thievery by greed and envy. I hope the republicans don’t cave in or compromise.

fourdeucer on December 3, 2010 at 5:22 PM

Just throw them all out! Every last freaking one of these Democrats and RINOs! No apologies. No explanations. No discussions. Let them call us whatever they want.
Just defeat them, kick them out on their rears and shut the door behind them and then get back to returning what is left of America to a Republic again.

I’ll tell you another thing, we need to clean out the media as well. I don’t know how it can be done. But just taking back this government may not be enough. The mainstream media needs to be cleaned out too. Either that, or we need more new media.

JavelinaBomb on December 3, 2010 at 5:28 PM

Well this is rich considering how the Democrats have behaved these last two years! And that’s quite the admission from Schumer.

If the general public understood Palin’ s post re Sowell they would get that not increasing everyone’s taxes like Obama wants would keep revenue where it is… Increasing them will make revenue drop and cutting further would make revenue increase.

But not a single one of them from the tea party or anywhere said ‘give tax breaks to the wealthiest,’” Schumer said in a rare moment of candor.

What bothers me most about the frickin fiasco is the narrative of “tax breaks”. Nobody is asking for a “tax break” for those above $250k. We’re asking they simply be left the he** alone, status quo. It won’t add 2 cents to the deficit because it’s money we don’t have, like an acct receivable. You can’t “lose” what you don’t have. Using their logic, we are losing $30 trillion because we aren’t charging a 90% tax rate.

Lyin thievin’ b*stards.

Liberal/Progressives believe they’re entitled to spend as much money as they want, as fast as they can.

And, they believe the taxpayer/consumer is required to pay for it.

Key West Reader on December 3, 2010 at 5:59 PM

Hey Schumer, schumck you.

These are not tax breaks, we are preventing tax increases of almost 8%. I’ll type slowly so you can u n d e r s t a n d.

A federal tax rate of 36.9% increased to 39.9% is an 8% increase.

You combine this 8% tax rate increase with proposals for elimination of the home mortgage deduction, no tax deductions period. Combined with increased heating bills, electric bills, gasoline taxes, higher food costs and you’ll soon afford another Obowma trip to Spain or South American villa.

Key West Reader on December 3, 2010 at 6:02 PM

1. the Left is in hysterics
2. the Left will be happy to let the AMT and all other taxes go up
3. the Left will be happy if the stock market tanks because of the tax increases
4. the Left likes knives and guns and whatever to win their point

4. Rs will cave in a week…people making a million per year will have a tax increase next year.
5. the subisdies to low income people will continue
6. the extended unemployment will go for a year…which sets up the Left to whine next Christmas about the horrid, greedy, racist, Rs.

r keller on December 3, 2010 at 6:10 PM

There’s your tax-cut compromise

I’d take it. The tax cut wasn’t that huge anyway, and ObamaCare is likely more harmful to the economy than a tax increase.

JohnJ on December 3, 2010 at 5:35 PM

Menendez is probably referring to the Schumer amendment, which is supposed to be a sop compromise.

The Dems have counted their chickens before they are hatched, thinking that increased taxes “on the rich” will pay for their out-of-control “appropriations” for their growing welfare state. They have already “spent” what they had assumed was a new revenue source.

Turn the lights off on them, and adjorn. Let them know, they have nothing to say.

Obama cannot raise taxes, (even though he already has), so they will cave.

This will probably last until the 2nd week in January, when the people get their first withholding shock.

Truly popcorn worthy.

Allahpundit misses the point yet again.

Position before Jan 2007:

Tax cuts in place, no Obamacare.

Position after 2009:

Tax cuts in place, Obamacare.

Democrats proposed position after 2010:

Fewer tax cuts in place, no Obamacare.

Who wins?

Democrats.

How does one deal with terrorists?

Army Brat on December 3, 2010 at 10:39 PM

Dem senator: Negotiating with the GOP on taxes is almost like negotiating with terrorists

Let’s consider who the “terrorists” are:
- The ones trying to transform America into a socialist state.
- The ones trying to subvert the Constitution.
- The ones trying to subvert the will of the people by ramming unpopular legislation down our throats.
- The ones who call everyday patriotic Americans “extremists”.
-The ones who coddle our enemies and chastise our friends.
- The ones who rewrite history to obscure our roots and values.
- The ones trying to spend us into oblivion and destroy the economy.
Don’t think that describes many Republicans — some but not many.

Allah, What a novel idea, actually getting something in return for a legislative compromise.

That’s rich allah! Seal the deal by shaking hands with the Dems then count your fingers.
I remember the deal Bush I made with the Dems: for every $1 in tax increases the Dems would cut spending by $2. Well, Mr. Read My Lips got tagged for raising taxes alright. Total amount of spending cuts: $0.00. How’d that deal work out for you Mr. RML?
My read: “We won. You deal with us. Same rules as when you were the majority party. Thanks for playing and we have some wonderful parting gifts for you.”

O.k… he is saying that if you don’t tax a rich person that you are taking money from poorer people. How is that? The poorer people don’t have any rights whatsoever to the richer person’s money. It’s an insane line of reasoning.

It is simple: Just stop spending so much money! Spend half as much and you won’t have to raise a dime in taxes- heck you could cut them!
