Women finally get seats in the House

posted at 8:48 am on December 2, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

If a woman’s place is in the House, why then did it take until now for female Representatives to get the same access to bathroom facilities as men?  In one of John Boehner’s opening moves as the new Speaker of the House, he will order the conversion of the Parliamentarian’s office into a women’s restroom that will give the same access to facilities as the men have:

Incoming House Speaker John Boehner is tearing down the Parliamentarian’s office to build female members of Congress a restroom.

Currently, only male lawmakers are afforded the ability to walk steps from the House floor to use the restroom. Women must walk across Statuary Hall to the Lindy Claiborne Boggs room, but the 71 women who will serve in the 112th Congress will be able to walk out the Democratic side of the chamber straight to the bathroom.

Andrew Malcolm notes the irony of finally getting equal treatment as a result of having the first woman Speaker lose her position:

For some reason it took a male Speaker of the House to accomplish this:

The nearly six dozen female members of the incoming House of Representatives will have a new restroom just as close to the chamber’s floor as their male colleagues. A sometimes significant comfort, given legislators’ propensity to blather. …

Until now female members have had to traipse much farther than male colleagues to find restroom facilities, even during these past four years of leadership under the country’s first female speaker.

The contrast is certainly amusing, but the greater hypocrisy lies with the entire Congress.  Imagine how loudly Congress would shriek if it discovered a disparity in facility access that favored men in the private sector, or for that matter, even the public sector.  Why, members would thunder about equality and discrimination from the House floor, demanding respect for women and probably passing some bill that they might call the Potty Parity Act to enforce it.

Actually, don’t bother to imagine it.  That actually took place in March of this year:

Lawmakers concerned about a shortage of women’s restrooms in federal buildings introduced the “Potty Parity Act” on Thursday to ensure equal access for men and women in future federal buildings and in facilities leased by the government.

Democrats and Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hope to establish an equal number of toilets for men and women at government buildings. They note that some private employers have laid off women instead of expanding facilities.

Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.), the bill’s lead sponsor and the chairman of the oversight panel, said in a statement that he is concerned about “exasperating lines” and general restroom accommodations for women in government buildings. Part of the problem stems from buildings constructed decades ago, before women joined the federal workforce in large numbers, he said.

“Our nation’s history shows that the structure and accessibility of American public restrooms have served as manifestations of more deeply rooted problems of discrimination, among race, physical ability and gender,” Towns said in a statement. “In 2010, we must move the clock forward by finally addressing an overdue problem of unequal, inadequate and inaccessible public restrooms for women.”

Ah, Congress.  Always leading by example.  And so we come not to the conclusion that Nancy Pelosi’s term as the first woman Speaker didn’t really benefit women, but to the conclusion that Congress apparently considers itself above the same laws it passes and principles it espouses.  Perhaps that might improve under John Boehner, but perhaps it means that voters will have to repeatedly deliver the message that Representatives are public servants and not an American nobility.

“Potty Parity?” How pathetic.

My university switched from all-male to co-ed. They only had one bathroom per floor in many buildings.

The fix was simple. Alternate male and female restrooms on the floors. Sometimes the girls had to walk up a floor, sometimes the boys did. Big deal.

Breaking: Potty Parity Act Amended by John Boehner—Women Afforded Equality in “Copping a Squat”

(note: Speaking of amendments, Steny Hoyer and the Democrats will not allow any amendments to the House tax bill vote scheduled this morning:

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., called the move “political chicanery and a nonstarter.”

Cantor pointed out that many Democrats back extending the tax cuts to all income levels and called for a vote on such a plan.

The Democratic plan to only partially extend the cuts will put Republicans and dozens of moderate Democrats in a difficult position. If they vote for the bill, they will be giving up any leverage they have to pass one that includes all taxpayers. If they oppose it, they could be criticized for voting against a middle class tax cut.

Republicans’ best chance of defeating the Democratic bill would be to amend it on the floor so that it includes all taxpayers, but Hoyer said he would try to block such amendments.

“We don’t want to muddle our message and we think we won’t muddle our message,” Hoyer said. (emphasis mine)

In the last days of a failed House of Representatives, Steny Hoyer and the remaining lame duck Democrats will continue with the Pelosi ploy of shutting out any Republican amendments or work “together” to keep anyone from getting a tax increase. Mr. Hoyer’s “message” is NOT MUDDLED. Americans understand perfectly that Hoyer and House Democrats did not get the message on Nov. 2nd. Sadly, for now, it’s “business as usual”* for the Democrats. (* a little toilet humor)

Update: As Dana Perino just put it……”these aren’t the Bush Tax Cuts, this is “The Obama Tax Hikes”

mizflame98 on December 2, 2010 at 9:38 AM

I gotta say. Really?!

God forbid, they not waste a million dollars to rennovate a a bathroom and keep walking through Statuary Hall. Or give them the men’s room and let the guys take a walk.

Why not just have lift up seats right there on the House floor. Then, they’d never even have to leave the floor. (And they could then crap on the American people more efficiently, both literally and metaphorically.)

This is dumb. I’m all for equality, but c’mon. Our Constitution is in flames and we’re worried about having to take a 10 second walk across the hall.

simon on December 2, 2010 at 9:39 AM

Sounds like an unnecessary waste of money. So women have to currently walk all the way across the hall to their bathroom? This will put the bathroom, what, a few dozen feet closer. In the meantime, have to lay in new pipes, tear down the Parliamentarian’s office, rip out the old bathroom fixtures, install the new bathroom fixtures in the new bathroom, and build an office over the old bathroom.

It will cost millions of dollars I’m sure. Very valuable feet of walking saved, there…

If you think this is a gotcha moment in which those hypocritical Dems have now been exposed with their pants down around their ankles (and no toilet paper on the roll), you don’t know Dems.

They will simply brush this whole business aside by pointing out that the only reason Boehner has issued the order to build accommodations for the ladies is because there will now be many more Republican ladies in need of accommodations than during Pelosi’s stint as speaker.

Had Boehner been speaker during the time when Democrat women were more numerous in the House, he would have shown no interest at all in conveniencing them this way, our Dem foes will argue.

Of course, it won’t derail their argument in the least by pointing out that Boehner would not have been speaker during the time when there were more Dem women in the House. As far as they are concerned, what you and I see as Boehner’s act of kindness is to them nothing more than irrefutable evidence of blatant Republican hypocracy and anti-woman attitudes.

Moral of the story: You can never persuade a Dem of your humanity, your deceny and your love of fair play, so don’t even bother trying.

aengus on December 2, 2010 at 9:06 AM

It just might be Boehner’s effort to save time.

Up to now, the existing women’s facility is down some hall across some range from where the Chamber is, while the men’s is adjacent to the Chamber (where they discuss, debate, do the work).

So maybe Boehner’s just trying to make things more efficient, time-wise. Females need MORE bathroom breaks more often than men (fact) and with a close-in facility for women, the House can now not have to delay debates, etc., quite as much while the women go off on safari across the building.

Fortunata on December 2, 2010 at 4:26 PM

We, my wife and I, plus our children, make six (6) sharing one bathroom in a small ranch house built in the late 1950s, beginning of 1960s.

At the diagonally opposite corner of our street, a family/friends of ours are 10, with the two parents and the 8 children. They also shared one bathroom for the entire family in a similar small ranch house.

It is funny that there are more women in Congress after the 2010 elections due to a high number of women being elected and reelected to congress, most of them conservatives and republicans.

Nevertheless, how could self absorbed politicians not have realized two decades ago, when more and more stadiums ensured that they built more ample facilities from female fans, and when the left claimed to so “pro-woman?”

They aren’t really pro-woman. They hate new human beings and love to butcher them, denying them their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, unalienable rights which our founders stated were endowed by our Creator.

Oops! There is no Creator, so we must ignore that part of the statement, as our Savior, the Messiah, has done so frequently.

I look forward to the day when our nation’s congress is devoid of any more leftist, elitist, snobbish, misogynists masquerading as people who care about women.
