Wikileaks tool: I’d love to expose Russia’s and China’s secrets too

posted at 9:39 pm on December 1, 2010 by Allahpundit

I’m starting to believe him, not because I think he’s genuinely indifferent to which country’s information it is that he’s freeing but because he seems like enough of an egomaniac to maybe develop a full-blown messianic complex from all this media attention. (Per the first link, he’s got the editor of Time magazine hanging breathlessly on his every word.) And would-be messiahs are apt to take risks that more rational sorts wouldn’t. Could a man who once started a site called IQ.org and churned out self-important pap like this convince himself that he’s the one who’ll lift the peoples of Russia and China out of oppression?

I’m thinking … yeah, quite possibly.

Asked if he wanted to expose the secret dealings of China and Russia the way WikiLeaks has done with the U.S., Assange said, “Yes, indeed. In fact, we believe it is the most closed societies that have the most reform potential.” He sounded heartened, if not overwhelmed, by the response to the megaleak so far. “The media scrutiny and the reaction are so tremendous that it actually eclipses our ability to understand it.” But he said he believed there was a shake-up going on, adding, “There is a tremendous rearrangement of viewings about many different countries.”

In a 36-minute interview with TIME (the full audio will be available soon on TIME.com), Assange explained that exposing abuses can lead to positive change in two ways. When abusive organizations are in the public spotlight, “they have one of two choices,” he said. The first, he continued, “is to reform in such a way that they can be proud of their endeavors, and proud to display them to the public.” The second choice, he said, “is to lock down internally and to balkanize, and as a result, of course, cease to be as efficient as they were. To me, that is a very good outcome, because organizations can either be efficient, open and honest, or they can be closed, conspiratorial and inefficient.” What he left unsaid but clearly implied was that organizations of the second type eventually fail.

There’s more where that came from, including a lament that in western countries it’s awfully tough to produce economic change due to “contractual obligations.” Bear that in mind the next time you hear libertarians celebrating Assange.

In fairness to him, he’s already revealed material that’s embarrassing to Russia and China in this current document dump, including a new cable published tonight in which a U.S. diplomat suggests that Putin ordered the hit on Alexander Litvinenko. The Chinese might already be trying to shut him down, in which case Assange may conclude that there’s little left to lose in airing whatever dirty laundry on him that he’s got. But where, oh where, can a man being hunted by Interpol, the CIA, and possible Russian and Chinese intelligence go to stay safe? Hmmmm.

Speaking of libertarians celebrating Assange, via the Right Scoop, here’s a fun clip of Fox News’s Truther of the week debating John Bolton about the wisdom of leaking the documents. Take two minutes to read this smart Ross Douthat post about Assange, too. The great champion of open systems and informational efficiency is likely to achieve the opposite as governments clamp down tighter on state secrets and as bad data that was never intended for public consumption starts to spread.

I wonder if the Russians would just outright kill him. If he did anything like this to Russia, I’d imagine if they could get hold of him, they’d want to know his sources.

In the end, if he was in Russian hands, I’d bet he’d beg to be waterboarded by Americans, or paraded around in his underwear.

All he needs is a politically correct neutered military that has to admit soldiers intent on causing harm to their country because they have been brain washed by liberal professors, to hate their country, and the government, and the military can’t even ask the question when they sign up for service, due to liberal legislation written to tie the hands of said military…

likely to achieve the opposite as governments clamp down tighter on state secrets

Wasn’t it you Allah, or Ed, who said the gov’t may start classifying fewer communications and intel as to limit exposure to the more sensitive information?

Douthat and every other rightwing blog who puts any thought into this, thinks this will lead to a more secretive state. But I can’t help but feel this is some kind of tribalist overreaction–because we got a black eye, rather than an honest discussion about all the stuff Uncle Sam is keeping from us.

Will Wilkinson has a point, but I’m sure he’ll be ignored because his argument can be attributed to a truther (Napolitano).

David2.0 on December 1, 2010 at 10:49 PM

I can’t believe Napolitano tried to get away with that at the end. Free speech doesn’t mean you can stand up in a theatre and yell “Fire!” without fear of consequences. The First Amendment doesn’t mean you can say whatever you like, whenever you like, nor does it mean that protected content is no longer protected and can be disseminated willy nilly.

Why do we need to know that Saudi Arabia is afraid of Iran? I mean, maybe we all have warmer hearts to-night at the thought, but nothing practical to the benefit of the US was gained by that leak. If someone got their hands on the President’s Daily Briefing from the intelligence orgs, would it be okay to publish that?

Personally, I find it distasteful that it took the Obama administration this document dump to get mad at Wikileaks. Their prior leak naming people who have co-operated with us in Iraq and Afghanistan was really damaging, this was for the most part, embarrassing. We all know it’s saving face that motivates Obama however, not other considerations.

He knows all it amounts to is massive publicity, a lot of anger from the governments but nothing else. Going after Russia and China however will be a different animal, one that doesn’t liked being poked at.

My thoughts on Assange.

YoungAmerican on December 2, 2010 at 4:04 AM

Assange has managed to put together an impressive network of information brokering and gathering, and then put it to use in the LEAST intelligent way possible.

A metaphor one might apply is that of someone with a crowbar who wants to move a boulder – Assange is banging away at the boulder and screaming at it. He may chip the boulder, he may injure passers-by, but the boulder is going nowhere and sooner or later he’s going to hurt himself.

It’s almost like he read 2-3 chapters into one of those Libertarian “genius takes on the world” novels, but then his ADD kicked in and he never got as far as the clever part of the plan.

Someone with genuine talent could have leveraged information into some kind of positive change, but instead all we have is the international equivalent of a 5-year-old who locked himself into the cabin of a crane with a wrecking ball on it.

We have bodies on the ground in the Middle East and relationships on the ground all over the world, and after Assange (and some others involved in this) end up on the ground because of their mad flailing, I sure hope no one else is stupid enough to follow that “business model.”

Not because what we have is “perfect” or even “good,” but just because it’s better than the swill these folks are offering. Every revolutionary thinks they have a better way, and history tells us 99% of them are dead wrong – and a lot of other people die finding that out.

Merovign on December 2, 2010 at 4:48 AM

I’d LOVE for him to steal deep Chinese and Russian secrets and put them out to the world. After benefiting from this, I’d also love to see a Russian or Chinese hit man put him down with a pinch of radioactive material in his food, or 2 to the chest and 1 in the head at point-blank range with a silenced 7.65mm Walther PPK. His level of stupidity is phenomenal.

For his part, broken down, once-and-former judge, Napolitano, is nothing more than a tool, and it says nothing good about the American justice system that this dumbass could ever have been a judge. He’s nothing more than one of these uneducated idiots that makes up things regarding the Constitution, such as claiming there has to be some kind of openness, in order to properly uphold one’s pledge to protect and defend the Constitution. When I was inducted into the Army, and even now, I would unhesitatingly lie, cheat, steal and kill to protect American national security, in my effort to protect and uphold the Constitution. There’s nothing stating you must not keep secrets or tell the truth to enemy scum (like liberals). Napolitano’s no smarter than Huffington.

Here’s a quote for Judge Truther:

“[a] strict observance of the written law is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to the written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the ends to the means.”

-Thomas Jefferson

jp on December 2, 2010 at 8:18 AM

If you want to know why Judge Truther is nuts, all you need to know is that he’s closely aligned with the Anarcho-Capitalist over at Lew Rockwell.com, checkout their blog on this very subject for example.

This is ron paul central, and one of many reasons why we shouldn’t play nice with the paulnut. They are NOT classical liberals, their idol rejected classical liberalism in favor of anarcho-capitalism.
