Video: Metal band sacrifices “Sarah Palin” onstage

posted at 5:39 pm on November 30, 2010 by Allahpundit

Via Gateway Pundit, the outrage du jour. I couldn’t name you a single Gwar tune but I’ve known of the band for years for precisely this reason — their costumes and stagecraft are so famously ridiculous that the whole act operates as a sort of satire of death metal. In fact, the lead singer’s been known to turn up on “Red Eye” in full regalia to banter with Gutfeld and crew. Dumping on politicians during their shows is another regular feature of their act: See Wikipedia for a long list of targets, along with this charming photo of “George W. Bush.” Which is to say, I’m not so sure this is evidence of specific anti-Palin animus as much as it is just … Gwar being Gwar.

Any Gwar fans want to correct me on that? Bear in mind, this would require you to admit to being a Gwar fan first. As for everyone else, please observe your official strong content warning, as there’s both profanity here and over-the-top gross-out material (of course). Exit question: When did David Frum and Joe Scarborough join Gwar?

From his Red Eye appearances, Gwar’s lead “singer” strikes me as one of those lower case “l” libertarians who voted for Obama and thinks Bill Mahr actually is a Libertarian. I despise those kinds of posers, but he makes for funny appearances on Red Eye.

Neo on November 30, 2010 at 6:10 PM

Not so fast. I was in their audience in 1993, and I vote conservative regularly. People have changing tastes, and want a different experience sometimes.

I wasn’t impressed with their music, but they do know how to put on a stage show.

They don’t take themselves seriously either, which is an important factor in understanding what they’ve been doing. It’s all a big gag.

darwin on November 30, 2010 at 6:20 PM

If they did Joy they’d have to come up with a 35-minute song for how long it would take to chainsaw that big a paper mâché figure.

(I agree with a couple of the above posters that this is actually a bit of a compliment to Palin, in that she’s a big enough political figure now to earn a place on Gwar’s “attack and hack” list. I’m now hoping to see a “Red Eye” in 2011 with Sarah going after Odorus Urungus on-set with a meat cleaver.)

What’s interesting is that if you watch closely, when the intestines appears there is one “intestine” with something attached to it… er… that’s not an intestine, that’s an umbilical cord with a baby attached that she uses to hit the guy with the sword over the head…

Either way, Ozzie & Alice Cooper did this kind of stuff better…

angrywonk on November 30, 2010 at 6:36 PM

LOL. Saw Gwar once. CrAzY!

But really, what the hell has SP ever done to deserve this? I mean, the peeps who do this are more insane than SP could ever be. I can see animal-rights wackos (not to be confused with us who support animal rights) getting all agro about her, but really, WHAT THE HELL HAS SHE DONE?

This is just GWB Derangement syndrome redux. That energy had to go somewhere. At this point I’m almost looking for a reason to bitterly hate SP, but I just can’t even find a reason to dismiss her with indifference.

Really, this is getting sick and sad. Call me when there is a reason to hate her (have any of these freaks ever took a trip down Hillary Clinton lane? There is an empire of hate ready to to ignited there!!). This country has gone NUTS!!!

Surprise: Sarah Palin’s Ratings RiseNovember
305:48 PM 11/30/2010 by James Hibberd
shareComments 32Sarah Palin’s fortunes are improving on TLC.

Ratings for the politican’s Alaska-based reality show grew for her third episode, reversing course after dropping sharply last week.

Sarah Palin’s Alaska delivered 3.5 million viewers Sunday night, rising 17% at the conclusion of the holiday weekend.

Normally when ratings go down double digits for a second episode, the third outing generally falls at least a little, but not in this case. Palin may also have benefited from some weaker competition (ABC had the Country Music Awards the previous week). Even so, this is great news for TLC.

As the name indicates, I’m from Richmond. While they’re considered a “metal” band, Brockie and those guys came out of the city’s 80′s hardcore scene, which of course means ultra left-wing; however, there have never really been any sacred cows with GWAR. They’ve always seemed to understand on some level that all politicians are full of shit, even their own side’s. For that reason, I just can’t get all that worked up about this – this is just GWAR being GWAR.

I have a hard time being offended over this topic, as Gwar just seems to lampoon celebrities, political or otherwise. However, I can crap better music than they play.

Kini on November 30, 2010 at 5:49 PM

Or because it’s GWAR, it’s to be expected? And thus not really outrageous at all. The clip is hilarious, though.

It would be neat to see them do Mohammed… but they don’t want to have to cancel shows because of real-life bomb threats… or be killed themselves. They are just musicians, record & t-shirt merchants, after all.

I am surprised at the number of times they’ve done Obama. Looks like he’s what they use as a show-starter. Obama just gets decapitated. Palin got the Bishop treatment, which looks like a much more complicated effect.

I can pretty much guarantee no one in that audience has ever voted, or will vote, in any election.

People who have no stake in anything don’t care enough to do anything, like voting.

Instead they whine online and in video game chat about how awful everything is, how their “rights” are taken away and how they will rise up and… get another microwave burrito their mom bought them at WALMART.

Considering how long GWAR has been around, I’m willing to bet good money that quite a few of their fans are productive adults and indeed, do vote…and I only bet on sure things. Yes, I know GWAR fans. Some work and pay taxes. Some vote. And yet, believe it or not, some of them are conservative.

But, GWAR still sucks. I don’t argue against that point.

ynot4tony2 on November 30, 2010 at 7:53 PM

Bad schtick, bad music, bad costumes, bad lighting, just plain bad. People actually pay to see this sh!t?

unseen on November 30, 2010 at 7:55 PM

rvastar on November 30, 2010 at 7:35 PM

Keep in mind that they are, after all, businessmen who work in a niche market. They sell tickets, records, and t-shirts – and as small businessmen, they probably aren’t wishing for confiscatory taxes, health care mandates that will hurt their business financially (as well as physically), or any type of free speech restrictions/hate speech codes/FCC regulations/morality codes/Fairness Doctrine.

Their stock and trade just happens to be over-the-top shows, costumes, and they’re in the black when they’re in the red… with BLOOD!

CPL 310 on November 30, 2010 at 8:04 PM

And for the people criticizing GWAR for not burning a Koran, or Muhammad in effigy, I’m just wondering…did GWAR ever desecrate a Bible or defile a representation of Christ?

Not that you’re aware of, you say? Then what the hell are you whining about? Seems their targets are American celebrities, so why the knee-jerk demand that they attack a religion out of the blue?

Just sayin’…

As someone who’s booked them in both their incarnations (Gwar is just one “form” for this band) and sat and had beers with them before and after shows. . .

This is just Gwar being Gwar.

I can almost guarantee that each member of the band would rather Palin over Obama. They just realize that they won’t get the same reaction from their fans w/Obama. They also would probably pass on Obama to avoid the obligatory cries of “racist” that would follow.

Jason Coleman on November 30, 2010 at 10:52 PM

Sarah Palin, the female Jesus the Christ of the year 2010.

The powers that be are so obsessed with her, and don’t know how to act toward her, but, for safety sake, choose to hate her, berate her, fabricate and lie about her, and exaggerate outrage over her.

I won’t be surprised if we wake up one day and find she was taken out and tortured, crucified, and burned alive, just because they think they must.

If I had a nickel for everyone who claims to be a peace loving, spiritual person, always preaching love, peace, tolerance, understanding, and quoting Rinpoche, the Dalai Lama, the Buddha, etc., then turn around and post giddy, gleeful, misogynistic, irrational, unfounded, factless, lies and hate speech against Sarah Palin, along with similar attacks targeting Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Conservatives, the Tea Party (They insult them with false charges of “racist!” and “haters!” and “violent!” and they use the term “teabaggers” so much for loving, compassionate, enlightented spirtual people), etc., I’d be fairly wealthy.

Sarah Palin isn’t Marilyn vos Savant, but neither is Barack Hussein Obama, Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama, William Jefferson Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Janeane Garofalo, Nancy Pelosi, Joy Bihar, John F. Kerry, Al Gore, Barbara Boxer, etc.

William2006 on November 30, 2010 at 10:57 PM

Seeing above that they did do Obama, I’m impressed. When I booked them (this is back in the 90′s mind ya) they had a fear that people would try to read too much into what they did and claim some sort of GWAR philosophy (sorta the same problem that’s currently hounding the ICP). They just wanted to be entertainers to entertain, not offer genuine social commentary.

Props for doing Obama guys and double for for Islamic pedophile.

I saw them countless times in my younger days – the whole thing is a goof. No one actually thinks their songs are any good, it’s all a prop for the loony stage show. As far as politics go, I think Dave Brockie’s always been a sort of libertarian anarchist, but I don’t think he takes politics much more seriously than he takes his music.

Definitely just Gwar being Gwar.

I’ve seen GWAR a couple times actually and I’ve seen them sacrifice all sorts of people. Including the Hilary and Obama in the last concert. I don’t have video of this but it did happen. On that note, anything that GWAR does is hardly news worthy.

“There is no Christ, only doo doo.” – GWAR as they sacraficed the Pope.

That should be all you need to know about this band.

Awesome band. No I mean awesome. Everybody should see GWAR and Slayer at least once before they die. Hell I wouldn’t mind being ‘beheaded’ at a GWAR show. It means, my friends, that you have ARRIVED!

I haven’t been able to find a video for what I once saw at a GWAR show: Michael Jackson back from the dead to molest an alien baby. I laughed so hard I puked. Might have been all of the vodka though…
