Somali-Born Teen Arrested After Attempting to Detonate a Car Bomb in Oregon

posted at 8:00 am on November 27, 2010 by Jimmie Bise, Jr

It’s not just high-profile targets that are at-risk, folks.

PORTLAND — A Corvallis teenager was arrested Friday in connection with a car bomb at a Christmas tree lighting event.

The bomb was inert and posed no danger, officials said.

Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Somalia and resident of Corvallis, was arrested on accusations of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction (explosives) in connection with a plot to detonate a vehicle bomb at an annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, the Justice Department announced.

According to the Reuters version of the story, Mohamud used a cell phone to detonate what he thought was van full of explosives. The target was the annual Christmas Tree lighting in the capitol of Portland, Oregon’s largest city (error corrected) during the evening of the busiest shopping day of the year. Mohamud was not aiming for a couple dozen victims, but hundreds and perhaps thousands and his motivation was “violent jihad”.

We shouldn’t fret, though. The authorities already know, scant hours after the arrest, that this was an isolated incident.

Dwight C. Holton, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, said, “This defendant’s chilling determination is a stark reminder that there are people — even here in Oregon — who are determined to kill Americans. The good work of law enforcement protected Oregonians in this case, and we have no reason to believe there is any continuing threat arising from this case.”

That’s all well and good, but do we have reason to believe there isn’t? Have the FBI and the Portland Police Bureau run down all of Mohamud’s friends and associates? Have they brought a few folks in for questioning? Far be it from me to criticize Dwight C. Holton, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, but I’m not confident in any police department’s ability to thoroughly investigate a suspect’s known associates in only a couple or three hours from the point of arrest. I realize this investigation has been ongoing for months, but perhaps the authorities could wait a few days before making the boilerplate “there’s nothing more to see here so move along” announcement, if for no other reason than to assure us that they’re diligently running down every possible lead.

Though the authorities were on top of this one, we should remember that they’re not going to catch every attempt. Mohamud chose Portland because it was an unlikely place for a terrorist strike and you can bet that if this occurred to a teenager on his first act of jihad, then it’s occurred to the seasoned veterans. I have no doubt that, even now, jihadists are looking at places where we gather as good places to strike and the police can’t be everywhere no matter how they may try to reassure us that they’re on top of things.

As we saw recently in Times Square, the most effective anti-terrorist tools are the eyes and ears of a vigilant citizenry. I made this point about airline security in the latest episode of my podcast, The Delivery, and it works outside the airport terminal, too. For every plot our law enforcement agencies foil, there are other plots they know nothing about. We still have to keep our eyes open, even in places where we think we should be safe, like a Christmas Tree lighting.

If you have not been overseas where this happens with regularity, you have no idea what this beginning in The States would mean to us. I’ve travel the US since I’ve been back and wonder what it would be like if we had to contend with roadside bombs like we did in OEF and OIF. This administration for one I’m sure would love a little Martial Law. And when you consider the reprisals that fringe elements would execute, Geez!

It’s really chilling. In a more sane world, people like would be made an example of. Swiftly. Before this gets out of hand.

This is hitting home…..I’ve got family in this area and they could have very well been at this Tree lighting.

In another article it says this “kid” thought he was in contact with people in Pakistan and the FBI has been involved in the investigation for quite a while:

According to a federal complaint, Mohamud was in regular email contact with the “unindicted associate’ in Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier starting in August 2009.

The complaint states that in December 2009 Mohamud and the “unindicted associate” used coded language in an email in which the FBI believes Mohamud discussed traveling to Pakistan to prepare for “violent jihad.”

At this point, I can only echo OmahaConservative’s post on November 27, 2010 at 8:10 AM, and thank the regional FBI for their vigilance.

If the FBI should of treated this like it was a real bomb and not fake. Do all the evacuations and get the bomb squad robot, do all the checks and hold the van in place or move it to a secure location all with the inside knowledge that it was fake. Have the media show it on TV live for 24 hours in loop. Even on the holiday because come Monday no one will know of it and go back to sleep.

When the cops do a sting they arrest the inside man or woman to make it look like the dealers or buyers where not doped by the cops themselves.

Because now every other cell that was in the stages of obtaining a bomb is now wondering if they are infiltrated. They will change their plans and may do it without the FBI contact and getting a real bomb. The info that he never had a real bomb should not have came out until weeks after the event and after it was so called studied and then the sting would also have been made public.

I’m off to paint more of the Hawk’s Nest but I’ll bet everyone here a steak dinner on a couple facts. The liberal media will play this off as the Obama Administration was on the ball. (And they might have been) But more importantly, that this is not a big deal because of the FBI intervention. They’ll purposely miss the point. The real story is that we have people living in The States now that are all too capable of bringing this kind of terror to our country and we’ll be more concerned in the press about insulting Islam.

hawkdriver on November 27, 2010 at 9:06 AM

The target was the annual Christmas Tree lighting in the capitol of Portland,

I’m not quite sure what the writer is trying to say here. Portland is not the capitol of Oregon. The area in question is called pioner square which is in the center of downtown portland if that is what he was trying to say.

Second, he didn’t chose Portland because it was an unlikely place for jihad. Portland is where he was raised and thus where it was easiest for him to do jihad.

I love this blog but for some reason this story was written at a lower standard than usual. I guess we all have our bad days.

This has become a sick joke.

Notice the innocuous headline: “Teen arrested…” He was 19. I imagine the newspaper was hugely relieved he came in under the wire.

Nowhere in the lengthy article do they use the terms Muslim or Islam or any such identification — despite his quoted use of “violent jihad” and actually shouting “Allahu Ahkbar.” I guess the newspaper thought it was better for us to use our imaginations than to dig behind these two screamingly blatant advertisements for his political/religious affiliations. Did he belong to a mosque? Most jihadists do. Not relevant?

It’s helpful of violent Islamics to make things so easy for us understand by shouting their identity and intentions, but nonetheless this always seems to confound the media.

It reminds me of the riots in France several years ago. I sorted through a dozen web stories at the time. The rioting Islamics were referred to as “disenfranchised youths,” “disaffected youths,” “mostly teens,” “low-income immigrants”, etc. No mention of Muslim or Islamic.

As long as mainstream Islam continues to consider non-Muslims as second-class, even expendable, these kind of extremist acts will continue. It’s part of the core philosophy of Islam that fuels these acts. Christianity says, love your brother as yourself. Islam says, love your Muslim brother as yourself. Others, not so much! When you believe in a religion, it means something. It’s not like belonging to the National Geographic Society or Hair Club for Men. Why do these terrorist acts continue? Look at how mainstream Islam looks upon non-Muslims.

Paul-Cincy on November 27, 2010 at 9:44 AM

We have an advantage over even Israel since explosives are difficult to obtain in the US. However with the open borders, instead of marijuana, maybe C-4 could be brought into our country. I consider us lucky so far that publicly we have not been aware that active terrorists and explosives have been brought in via the southern border, but luck is not a substitute for actual security.

It is beyond my comprehension that Americans are treated to enhanced searches to board an aircraft, especially someone like me who has had a secret clearance, yet our borders are wide open.

Our government’s primary constitutional responsibility is defending American citizens from attacks from within and without. I firmly believe that if we are attacked by people who cross our borders, when no real effort has been made to close said borders, then this president can be impeached for refusing to defend America and others more directly responsible should be brought up on criminal charges. I would say the same thing against GWB had a terrorist attack been found to have originated from people crossing our borders illegally during his watch. There is no excuse for not closing our borders.

And as an aside, would so many of our Hispanic citizens be so concerned about the supposed rights of illegals if they were Irish instead about 79% people from Mexico and Central America based on the 2000 census. Just asking.

amr on November 27, 2010 at 9:45 AM

Well WMUR here in NH gave the details including the ‘Allahu Ahkbar’ shouting. Another, albeit failed, terrorist act on Obama’s watch. When the left uses the word ‘watch’ it appears they mean stand back and ‘watch’ it happen again, and again and…. You Know Who Forbid that we should look facts in the face and deal with them. However, does give some legitimacy to the airport body scans, like it or not!!

Notice the innocuous headline: “Teen arrested…” He was 19. I imagine the newspaper was hugely relieved he came in under the wire.

Nowhere in the lengthy article do they use the terms Muslim or Islam or any such identification — despite his quoted use of “violent jihad” and actually shouting “Allahu Ahkbar.”

Fwew! Good thing he wasn’t 20, or he could have been dangerous. But then again, NYT says those teens need to be excluded from 2nd amendment protections because they are inherently dangerous.

You know how we stop things like this from happening again? We stop having Christmas tree lighting events that’s how!

That or pat downs.

No.

A fair trial followed by a hanging, then leave his body there as sport for the crows.

And as a warning to any other ‘ultra-devout’ muzzies considering similar deeds.

No more fun’in around with these vermin.

Call him a “teen activist” and put him on Dancing With the Stars.

The bomb was inert and posed no danger, officials said.

Inert means non reactive which means there was no real car bomb. So at best we have a conspiracy to commit a terrorist act rather that an actual terrorist act.

Punk. The jerk tries to blow up a family gathering in my Portland. And Portland is pretty liberal: they don’t even call it a Christmas tree — that would be intolerant. It’s a holiday tree. I’d like to see if this shakes some people into recognizing the danger of radical Islam.

According to Islam, we have three choices: Convert to Islam, Submit to Islam’s rule, or Die.

There is a fourth choice, however: destroy the malignant deathcult’s ideological basis- by showing that the Koran is a cosmic fraud.

As any honest historical analysis of the sordid evolution of the “perfect Koran” demonstrates. Exposing its fraudulent claim of being “an unchanged revelation from the mouth of Allah“.

As the Yemeni Koran fragments and many unconsciously embarrassing quotes from the Hadiths prove.

Until Muslims grasp that they have been duped by power-mongering Arab liars, this monstrosity marches on.

And lays further waste to 1.2 billion minds.

And endangers all infidels.

Like CANCER!

I realize this investigation has been ongoing for months, but perhaps the authorities could wait a few days before making the boilerplate “there’s nothing more to see here so move along” announcement, if for no other reason than to assure us that they’re diligently running down every possible lead.

Seriously? Even though you acknowledge the FBI has been working on this case for months (18 to be exact), you want them to hold off saying they’ve concluded this case isn’t tied to any other ongoing terror plots in the US because… it would make you feel better if they did? WTF? This has to be one of the dumber criticisms I’ve read on this site.

So when are they shipping this ass back to Somalia? Seems a fitting punishment.

The good work of law enforcement protected Oregonians in this case, and we have no reason to believe there is any continuing threat arising from this case.”

Thats because no average Joe Citizen, non-government employee has provided any information that would give reason to believe.

How dare we expect our security apparatus to chase ghosts.
