Video: A Thanksgiving tribute to property rights
posted at 12:00 pm on November 25, 2010 by Allahpundit
Holiday fun from Reason TV. Come for the silly Python-esque pronunciations of colonial English, stay for the history lesson about America’s very first experiment with socialism. Just one question: Is it true?
Historians say that the settlers in Plymouth, and their supporters in England, did indeed agree to hold their property in common — William Bradford, the governor, referred to it in his writings as the “common course.” But the plan was in the interest of realizing a profit sooner, and was only intended for the short term; historians say the Pilgrims were more like shareholders in an early corporation than subjects of socialism.
“It was directed ultimately to private profit,” said Richard Pickering, a historian of early America and the deputy director of Plimoth Plantation, a museum devoted to keeping the Pilgrims’ story alive.
The arrangement did not produce famine. If it had, Bradford would not have declared the three days of sport and feasting in 1621 that became known as the first Thanksgiving. “The celebration would never have happened if the harvest was going to be less than enough to get them by,” Mr. Pickering said. “They would have saved it and rationed it to get by.”
The competing versions of the story note Bradford’s writings about “confusion and discontent” and accusations of “laziness” among the colonists. But Mr. Pickering said this grumbling had more to do with the fact that the Plymouth colony was bringing together settlers from all over England, at a time when most people never moved more than 10 miles from home. They spoke different dialects and had different methods of farming, and looked upon each other with great wariness.
Squishy liberal E.J. Dionne tries to split the difference by conceding that, yes, capitalism worked for the Pilgrims, but that was only because it was backed by communitarian values and the promise of assistance to those in need. Which, I guess, means the real lesson of the first Thanksgiving is — what? Hooray for Medicare?
Two clips, the first from Reason and the other (via the Right Scoop) of Rush Limbaugh recounting this same story. It’s been a favorite of his for years. And for our three liberal readers who were hoping for something more their speed, no worries: Angelina Jolie’s got you covered.

Where there is absolutely no safety net, I’d agree. But just about every conservative I know is actually for a private social safety net. Because nuns and church ladies don’t unionize, and a voluntary arrangement between the aided and the aid givers turns out more successfully than one lubricated by entitlement.
The last 25 years or so has shown a big problem with the entire labor movement: It only seems to work when the industry in question has limited competition. This hyperattenuated sensitivity to labor exploitation doesn’t stop exploitation. It only exports it.

Yeah, when knowledge of the germ theory of disease came about 200 years later—but you know they did it in purpose. Ward Churchill told you so, right? /

Only in a pure capitalistic society can true equality of opportunity exist and only in a true capitalist economy where there is no safety net and were the stakes are you lose everything for misdeeds can real accountability, character and responsibility have its full and necessary effect.
Before anybody gets away with bashing capitalism, we should try it first. When bad actors crash and burn the others will learn to keep it between the fences and when employees have had enough they’ll become entrepreneurs, more business owners means more revenue, for everybody, if government is cut way back, like it should be.

Now who’s imagining things?
DrSteve on November 25, 2010 at 6:45 PM
Germ theory or no, there was definitely knowledge of infection. Some ‘gifts’ of blankets used by smallpox victims were used more than once to…pacify…certain tribes.
Unfortunately, bio-warfare is nothing new.

Jolie needs to chill and watch Northern Exposure’s Thanksgiving episode.
“It’s the same with white people — they cleared the forest, they dug up the land, and they gave us the flu. But they also brought power tools and penicillin and Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream.”

Actually, the Pilgrims might have known better, if they read their Bibles.
There, we have at least one clear description of the failure of Communism under optimal conditions. I refer, of course, to the Book of Acts, 4:32 – 5:11, Ananias and Sephira. NewLiving translation.
1. There is no doubt that they are practicing the economic system of communism:”All the believers were of one heart and mind, and they felt that what they owned was not their own; they shared everything they had…There was no poverty among them, because people who owned land or houses sold them, and brought the money to the apostles to give to others in need.” From each according to his means, to each according to his need — Marx would have been proud to call them brother.
2. They had as close to an incorruptible body of rulers as possible, who were proving their uprightness with miracles every day.
3. And they had pretty close to the ultimate Auditor; when Ananais and Sephira try to cheat the system, Peter knows about it instantly, and the punishment is swift and sure: the cheaters are struck dead on the spot.
And yet there were still cheaters, the apostles couldn’t hold it together for very long, and none of the other churches outside Jerusalem seem to have even tried it. If the 12 Apostles backed up by God couldn’t make communism work, how in the h*ll would any lesser mortals have a shot??

Are you serious? Conservatives are far outnumbered by liberals and squishy’s on this website (which is moderated by a liberal and a squishy). Saying you are a conservative does not mean you are a conservative otherwise frum, parker and brooks would be conservative leaders.

People give that guy a lot of flack, but the fact is he has just as much genetic knowledge about the plight of indigenous peoples as every one else does.
The problem is that he, and all the liberals who follow the same version of “history”, have absolutely no wisdom BEYOND what they were born with.
