The Palin Fish Massacre of Aught Ten
posted at 10:00 am on November 25, 2010 by Jazz Shaw
As any long time reader will tell you, I’ve never been one of the adoring fans of the Wasilla Wildcat. In fact, I wouldn’t even qualify as a foot soldier in the Palinista Army. But when I awoke on Thanksgiving morning and began flipping through the news, I found myself having a Jon Stewart moment.
Stop making me feel sorry for the Palins!
The story which caught my attention had one of the more provocative titles I’d seen all week. Sarah Palin clubs to death a fish on reality show labelled ‘a snuff video’ by animal rights group. (And really, guys, couldn’t you spell check the title?)
Sarah Palin is under fire for clubbing a fish to death on her new reality TV show.
The Tea Party darling and her daughter Bristol, 20, were shown on a halibut fishing trip filmed for her new programme, Sarah Palin’s Alaska.
After catching a fish, Sarah is seen beating it with a club and Bristol later holds its still-beating heart in her hand, a sight Sarah called ‘weird’.
Now, first of all, I’ve been a volunteer and worker in animal welfare groups for most of my adult life. (Please note that I prefer the term “animal welfare” to “animal rights.” The entire concept of “rights” is a creation of humans which applies to us. Animals have no inherent rights other than those we choose to assign to them.)
But even with that background, I have zero use for PETA, ELF and the rest of their ilk, apparently including In Defense of Animals, (IDA) the group raising a stink over this non-story.
The language used in this report, rather than being alarming, actually set me to laughing. “Clubbed a fish to death?” And particularly, “holds its still-beating heart in her hands?” Is this a fishing trip or a mockumentary on Mayan Sun God sacrifice rituals.
Please, people. It’s a fish. Humans used their brains and technology to achieve apex predator status on this planet and the fish, well… they came in a bit further down on the food pyramid. We eat them. Get over it.
I’ve been a fisherman since childhood and have made a fair number of trips out to sea for the bigger species. One of the last times we went out we didn’t use a club on the large fish. We used a gaffing hook to drag them into the boat and gutted them while they were still moving. The fact is, you don’t want to eat a fish that died of “natural causes.” And with apologies to the IDA, the fish in question is destined for the dinner table, so lethal injection simply isn’t an option.
And so, for this fabulous bit of reporting and fauxrage, the Daily Mail and the IDA share joint honors in my Thanksgiving Turkey of the Week award. As for the rest of you, try to squeeze in a serving of fish along with your turkey today in honor of this supreme piece of journalistic tripe.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Palin grows on you Jazz. Just when you think there is no way you could support her, she goes and endears herself to you by clubbing a fish – what’s not to love?
If I can hold my nose and vote for two Bushes, a Dole and a McCain, surely RINOs can give us conservatives a break with a Palin. You gotta admit she is a lot more entertaining than all of them put together.
You go Sarah – keep clubbing those fish and liberals into submission!

I like Sarah Palin and I am pro life.
I am also someone that does not hunt and I often rescue injured animals, both wild and domestic. And after spending summers in the Bahama’s Marlin fishing with friends-I stopped going due to the fact I did not enjoy watching animals/fish die, it stressed me out. You guessed it- I am one of these weird vegetarians…
So I turned off Palin’s show Sunday night, because I did not enjoy watching fish getting clubbed to death.
And I was left with the feeling that the Palin’s reality show was a mistake…I think Karl Rove was right.
But, that’s just me.

I guess the animal rights folks never bothered to watch Swamp People… any sort of fishing done with a rifle has got to be one of the best sorts of fishing around. And if you don’t do it right you can get a live and quite nasty gator in your boat.

And agriculture isn’t quite a war because the forests and wetlands and prairies, the rain, the soil, the air, can’t fight back. Agriculture is really more like ethnic cleansing, wiping out the indigenous dwellers so the invaders can take the land. It’s biotic cleansing, biocide. … It is not non-violent. It is not sustainable. And every bite of food is laden with death.
There is no place left for the buffalo to roam. There’s only corn, wheat, and soy. About the only animals that escaped the biotic cleansing of the agriculturalists are small animals like mice and rabbits, and billions of them are killed by the harvesting equipment every year. Unless you’re out there with a scythe, don’t forget to add them to the death toll of your vegetarian meal. They count, and they died for your dinner…
Soil, species, rivers. That’s the death in your food. Agriculture is carnivorous: what it eats is ecosystems, and it swallows them whole.
Happy Thanksgiving!

They’re taking over down here. Even if I can’t buy bullets I can kill these damn pigs and feed my family if necessary. I plenty of reloading supplies for my .303 enfield.

Thank you for your opinion. Not everyone can view the harvesting of animals. It is a messy business, and as a lover of animals I respect that. I can tell from your comment that you are also respectful of those who do hunt and harvest food.

Halibut are the liberals of fish. Bottom feeders, both eyes on the left side of their head and when caught flop around like mad.
Clubbing this the most humane way to deal with their flopping. It keeps them from hurting themselves or someone else.
Just to be clear, I’m referring to halibut…
DrDeano on November 25, 2010 at 3:27 PM
One might get the impression if she clubs helpless fish on the head then she lacks compassion. We know she has a humble, self-deprecating side, a good sense of humor, and cares for her family. She’s more about getting the job done first, then compassion second. That might turn some independents off.

This fish are HUGE. You don’t kill it with the club, you simply stun it, and then stick a knife in it’s gills and let it bleed out.
They gut the fish on board ship, then throw them in the hold, where they are packed in ice. They fill the gut with ice to keep it fresh.
At the processing plant they have a big guillotine to lop the heads off. Does it nicely.
gary4205 on November 25, 2010 at 4:22 PM
You mean……………
………….. you killed a halibut for the hellofit?
Shy Guy on November 25, 2010 at 4:33 PM
I’ve clubbed halibut many a time. Sturgeon too but not as much as they’re protected by size and weight and most get tossed back. Back in the days when I lived in Seattle and Astoria, Oregon. No need to club salmon as they’re a quick fillet job right after capture. Fantastic fishing in the Northwest. I miss it so.
You have to render them deceased once they’re reeled in or they’ll flail about for quite a long time and cause injury to people or even damage to your boat. They’re generally too big and strong for a live-tank if your boat is so equipped.
Much ado about nothing at all… except that it is Sarah Palin.
FlatFoot on November 25, 2010 at 4:41 PM
Now there is a reality show. And a really good one. I want to try me some gator huntin’! I’ve caught some big and toothy fish, but a 12 foot gator on hook and line, slamming up against the boat? Now that looks like some fun!

Most of us have a blog and something to share and inspire us; right now I am working very hard with my writing, since I haven’t written any stuff on my own; I know the basics of it. From my stats, the highest day I had almost 500 people; now depending on posts and news, I can go up to 250/day.
I am in WordPress which is not my favorite venue, but Google Blogger screwed me up. C4P is moving to WordPress (I believe they’ve reached a peak that Blogger can’t sustain any longer). I hope it stays pretty much the same.
To write that HotAir is boring because different bloggers get posted here it would deny the opportunity to be read by thousands that deserve the same chance as Cubachi has, or that I may have one day. To single out only one blogger as “HotAir worthy” makes no sense in my world. I love Cubachi, and I am very happy to see her evolution as a blogger to what she’s accomplished today; my hat’s off to her.

OK, the premise of this book is that man’s diet has evolved faster than we have. Much of the poor health and obesity are a result of eating foods our bodies aren’t well equipped to assimilate. The diet advocates giving up grains and milk products and increasing intake of fruits and vegetables. It stresses meat, eggs, and fish are essential for health in limited quantities.
Can you live with that? Even if they are really down on Twinkies and Doritos?

I’d suggest more than you think. I think a greater number still have the tools readily at hand to do so if they required.
Personally, I hunt and fish every chance I get, but that’s not the point, we have economies of scale that can do it for us more efficiently and complaining about commercial fishing or commercial ranching is stupid. Especially since it’s commercial fishing and ranching that allow us the free time to even discuss the issue.
If the libtards that complained about food production had to take care of it themselves, they’d starve. . . after they’d tried to steal all they could from those who actually had the tools and skills.

Right. That was my point. And the Daily Mail, where the quoted article appeared, is a British paper and, as such, spelled it correctly. Evidently it is not all that uncommon for halibut hearts to keep beating for a while after the fish is dead. As I recall, it was a minor plot point in one of the Kate Shugak novels by Dana Stabenow.
