National turkeys flee California for a red state

posted at 7:30 am on November 24, 2010 by Andrew Malcolm

President Obama is expected to pardon the national turkey today.

Actually, the ex-state senator from Illinois will also let the national turkey’s backup off scot-free as well.

Of course, every president does the same and has for 63 straight years now at the bipartisan day-before-Thanksgiving photo op. The outdoor White House ceremony allows the chief executive to wish the country a Happy Thanksgiving and spare the lives of a couple of puzzled birds while millions of others have been slaughtered and are thawing in kitchen sinks across the land.

This year’s two turkeys — Apple and Cider — were raised on Foster Farms Wellsford Ranch in California.  They fled their homestate with the imminent inauguration of another liberal Democrat, Jerry Brown, as governor.

Obama, however, would have no amnesty. He sentenced the fowl – Apple and Cider — to spend the rest of their natural lives behind wire at George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens in Virginia, which has a Republican governor.

Funny, I didn’t know Pelosi had been convicted of anything.

The only turkeys that need to flee California are named “Brown” and “Newsome”…

Khun Joe on November 24, 2010 at 7:40 AM

Does anyone think Christie would pardon the fowl?

I had the enjoyment of processing my own heritage White Holland the other day. He is going into a brine this morning.

What happened to the OOTD? It’s showing up on my Yahoo RSS feed, but I get a 404 when I click on it.

Mount Vernon’s a nice place to do time.

AZCoyote on November 24, 2010 at 7:45 AM

Why is it that the video of Sarah speaking to a reporter while turkeys were being fed into a feather machine come to mind?

There’s a place for ‘Apple’ and ‘Cider’ at my thanksgiving table – right next to the mashed potatoes!

President Obama is expected to pardon the national turkey today.

So Charlie gets off scot-free? Figures.

TheBigOldDog on November 24, 2010 at 7:50 AM

It would be great if those turkeys ended up at a food bank… Just sayin’.

First thing I did this morning was slip the Turkey into the sink:)

I like the tradition. Too bad that putz is doing it.

What I want to know is will Palin do another interview with turkeys getting their heads cut off in the background? That was classic.

Sign of the times. Turkeys sent to Mt Vernon animal park are the domesticated mutant sterile commercial mules instead of the real thing (wild).

Anyone want to take bets that he will bow to the bird first?

What did Biden do now?

Oh…

JetBoy on November 24, 2010 at 8:03 AM

The turkeys have come home to roost.

At the White House, every day is turkey day.

Will Obama bow at this ceremony?

Too funny!

President Obama is expected to pardon the national turkey today.

He is going to pardon himself?

Is that constitutional?

percysunshine on November 24, 2010 at 8:24 AM

I’m surprised they are still allowed to raise turkeys commercially in California.

They are “free range” and they range as far as the California legislature.

Actually, that’s an insult to fowl. Birds would do a far better job than Democrats.

Next, a reindeer will replace Axelrod.

Actually, B.O.B. (Benzoate Ostylezene Bicarbonate) could replace Axelrod. Hell, he could replace Obama and every member of his cabinet and I’d feel much safer than I do now.

National Turkey – is that Charlie Rangel?

disa on November 24, 2010 at 10:41 AM

This is absolutely the stupidest tradition going. Stuff those suckers already.

Rocks on November 24, 2010 at 10:43 AM

Will Obama bow at this ceremony?

Depends. Is the turkey a foreigner? A Muslim? A despot? If so, then Barry will certainly bow.

If it’s a regular American turkey, then no.

AZCoyote on November 24, 2010 at 10:45 AM

lol…That made me think of this for some reason…
